Joining us today is Michael Dehn Breault, CEO of Gibson & Dehn. In 2017, Michael launched the namesake home fragrance brand Gibson & Dehn, building on his family’s entrepreneurial history in the floral and design business. As a 5th generation business owner, Michael brings over 125 years of family experience in botanicals, scent development and business acumen to his role as CEO. In this episode: Michael tells us about a long line of entrepreneurs in his family starting with his great-great grandparents who emigrated from Europe in 1892 and opened one of the first flower shops in the country in Saratoga Springs, NY. From his early experience in the family business and up-bringing in rural NY to international corporate executive roles, Michael shares how he made the transition to Founder and CEO. He says that Entrepreneurially Thinking to him means the opportunity to make a difference in business and in peoples’ lives through commerce and he explains how his collaboration with two nuns making candles on Long Island lead him to locate his production facility in Clarksville, MO (population ~420) where he's created jobs and supply chain partnerships, while actively working to bridge the urban/rural divide and supporting survivors of human trafficking. Michael shares how his hands-on approach and focus on building business relationships at a human scale allow him to scale globally and create exceptional experiences for wholesale and retail customers through a distinctive home fragrance brand. From placing candle wicks alongside employees and scrambling to relocate operations up hill when the Mississippi flooded the production facility to finding local craftspeople to create wooden candle lids, Michael reflects on what it means to build a business with intention, with an eye on opportunity and a willingness to invest in people who are willing to experiment and quickly learn from mistakes. Few people get the chance to earn an MBA while doing a startup with their grandfather. Fewer still then move from a PhD program in Strategic Management into a faculty position at Lindenwood University in the same year! Today, Dr. Karl Kammerer is the Director of the Duree Center for Entrepreneurship at Lindenwood's Hammond Institute for Free Enterprise. Among other things, The Duree Center runs a program called Who Owns the Ice House? The program - based on the book of the same name - was created by the Entrepreneurial Learning Initiative and uses the inspiring real-life story of Clifton Taulbert and the lessons he learned from his Uncle Cleve - a black man in Jim Crow Mississippi - to explore eight life lessons from this unlikely entrepreneur. Like the Entrepreneurially Thinking podcast, the Who Owns the Ice House? program is focused on exploring and inspiring the mindset of the entrepreneur. Christy, Cheryl and Karl discuss the way entrepreneurs think and how that thinking can lead to inspiration and action. A deep belief in oneself, personal integrity and an innate sense of worth are among the traits in so many of us that are at the heart of successful entrepreneurial endeavors - not just for a chosen few, but for everyone and anyone who has the vision and passion to strive beyond their current circumstances. Karl earned an MBA in 2009 and a PhD in Management in 2016, both from the University of Kansas. During his PhD program, Kammerer was a fellow in the Madison and Lila Self Graduate Fellowship – a distinct honor among PhD students at KU as students are chosen for the fellowship because they “demonstrate the promise to make significant contributions to their fields of study and society as a whole.” Prior to entering the PhD program, Kammerer co-founded a small family business. The company, Professional Toxicology Services, Inc., continues its operations to this day providing products and services to organizations to ensure their compliance with state and federal laboratory testing regulations. http://www.lindenwood.edu/academics/centers-institutes/the-hammond-institute/duree-center-for-entrepreneurship/
