My guest for the latest Creative Spirits Unleashed Podcast episode is Lisa Calder. I met Lisa at the Equus Film Festival in December. When I watched her work in the round pen, I was immediately intrigued by her leadership style with horses. She has the precise balance of connection and direction that creates a seemingly effortless dance together, the kind of balance I call Dancing the Tightrope. This was one of the most unforgettable conversations I've ever had. Early on, Lisa shared some of her darkest days with a story that took my breath away. Literally, as she told it, I had to remind myself to breathe. Her story is a powerful reminder of our inner strength if we can get out of our own way to let it rise to the surface. She also shared her experience with burnout and how she finally learned how to say no and to walk with her spine and open heart. You have to hear how she described what this looks and feels like, because it is yet another balancing act. Many times during this conversation, I realized that Lisa was giving all of us a master class in self-awareness. Lisa Calder is the creator of Mindful Horsemanship. Her one-of-a-kind approach to horsemanship combines personal development and a unique way of using the breath while working with the horse, creating an unbreakable bond of true connection. Lisa believes if we are only working on our horse, we are missing the art of horsemanship. One must change their unconscious behaviors from within in order to create lasting change in their relationships. Explore 15 years at The Art of Storytelling Inc. helping businesses find and tell their stories. Video and photography productionCommunicationsUser generated contentAOS Content Cloud AppThe future of storytellingInsights from AOS' foundersFeaturing: Miranda O'Connor, James O'ConnorHosted by: Julianne NealWe've kind of settled on this niche because we know that this is what gives us our greatest joy is helping people to discover their stories, and I think a lot of video production companies trust that the client actually knows what their story really is and is able to verbalize it and explain it. But I do find that a lot of people rely on us to help them to discover what is it that they actually want to say, and what is it that makes them special.Welcome all to the first episode of Video Storytelling for Community Engagement. A brand new podcast from the folks at AOS – the Art of Storytelling – which is run by my friends Miranda and James O'Connor. They are responsible for several award winning documentaries exploring such themes as youth development through sports and music, climate change, and equine therapy… but also for hundreds of videos for brands who want to leverage their story to make a greater impact. It's been three years since they affectively moved their business and their lives from the Caribbean to Canada, six years since we last met at the Equus Film Festival in Camden, South Carolina, and an amazing 15 year journey for these two entrepreneurs, which I can't wait to share with you right now.You know we started this business on my mother's dining room table many many years ago and we didn't start off doing video stories. We started doing graphic design and then we started to do web design and we were doing web hosting at a point… so we really have done quite a lot of different things before we got to where we are today and what started as as photography then went into video. I do remember you know, the first time that we decided to invest in a digital camera. This is when digital cameras were becoming more available and it was so expensive we had to go to the bank and get a loan. And in those days we didn't have any money we didn't really know what we were doing and we kind of just like had faith that it was going to work and we went and borrowed money. We bought our first digital camera and I think it was like 3 or maybe 2 mega pixels like something ridiculous, you know and it cost it cost a huge amount of money in those days and I told him… I said, you know you, you better learn how to use this camera and make back this money. And he did, you know? And it just kind of went from there. But you know, coming up to the point where we met you and Bruce, we were doing a lot of business videos, business stories, we were doing some social responsibility videos for some of the bigger companies. We had started doing a lot of oil and gas and financial work and government work. But you know, the business stories are kind of where it evolved from. That's like that's what we draw on mostly. A lot of it is in the editing, but a lot of it is also in who we bring into these stories. Who are the stakeholders that we bring in to interview to form a really good narrative about the brand.People might take that for granted, but I wanted to say that a lot of the times we're doing it in real time. So yes, we do put a lot of effort into the pre production side of it to make sure that we're going to nail all of the objectives and everything. But because it's a very organic process where… You don't know what stakeholders are going to say. Ultimately, you don't know what the what response you are going to get, and that's what makes it so exciting and engaging because you're literally discovering something as this thing unfolds, and so you you have to be on your toes. You have to be dynamic and you have to kind o
Coming Up Thursday August 27th on Equestrian Legacy Radio... We welcome to the CAMPFIRE CAFE singer/songwriter, producer K.r. Wood! Lisa Diersen founder of EQUUS Film Festival is our special guest on this week's SADDLE UP AMERICA! The fun all begins LIVE at NOON CST with host Gary Holt and cohost Bobbi Jean Bell or catch the Archived Podcast at Equestrianlegacy.net
In this episode, Lisa and Julianne take a quick break from the series, Conversations with the EQUUS Herd, to speak with Gretchen Lida, contributing writer for Horse Network. Gretchen is an essayist and an equestrian, with work appearing in The Washington Post, Brevity, The Rumpus, The Washington Independent Review of Books, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Plaid Horse Magazine, Horse Nation and many others. She teaches composition in Illinois, lives in Wisconsin, sometimes lives on Nantucket Island and is still a Colorado Native.Gretchen brings a sense of normalcy for "horse people" in this time of uncertainty through her series of articles for Horse Network. From articles on the "less than half-truths" behind the familiar t-shirt saying, "My Horse is My Therapist" to the joys of riding an opinionated mare, her writing draws the reader into a world where being a horse girl and knowing a horse girl is something to be proud of. As she states regarding the benefits of the positive side of the stereotypes involved, "Power. Or, better yet, empowerment. So, to those who quake at the thought of a horse girl, I say, “Good. Be scared.” That’s right. Beware the horse girl. The word beware comes from an old English term that referred to prudence, being wary, or a sense of vigilance. It meant to watch carefully, and with caution. And it is true horse girls are a thing to watch, a thing to be careful of, and a thing to fill you with awe.We Horse Girls are fierce."In this Zoom call, the conversation between Gretchen, Lisa and Julianne includes flashbacks to the EQUUS Film Festival in December, favorite films from the fest, reviews of some of the films on The EQUUS Channel, and personal stories of favorite "horsey memories." They also stray into the current hot topic of how to cope with isolation during the pandemic. In a personal essay for Horse Network, Gretchen sums it up. “Still, the need for quiet and ceremony is deeply human. For me, that need for ritual and contemplation is fulfilled in another building. One that smells more like timothy than incense and that requires a different brand of footwear finery. I am a member of the church of Equus.”To find more about Gretchen Lida, visit https://gretchenlida.com.Twitter: @GC_LidaTo learn more about podcast host Julianne and her partner Bruce Anderson, tune in to "Whinny Tales: Horse Stories, Pony Legends and Unicorn Yarns," the official podcast of Nature's View and The Marley Project, their equine and arts-based 501 (c)(3). In this episode, Lisa and Julianne introduce listeners to artist Cindy Galloway and filmmaker Cindy Erkel, along with the Billy and Blaze team. The conversation with Cindy Galloway and the panel-style interview with Cindy Erkle were both recorded during the EQUUS Film and Arts Fest at the Kentucky Horse Park in December. The panel with the Billy and Blaze team was recorded at Breyerfest at the Kentucky Horse Park in July of 2019. About Cindy Galloway:My love for equines & animals in general began as a young girl, swimming in the creek behind our house and catching carp & tadpoles (my mom had to ask me to return the living aquatic beasts frequently to the creek - I had them in a bucket next to my bed). I consider all living things to have the same importance as humans - I really hate to even kill flies in our horse barn although my horses certainly don’t agree here. On to the equine history....My equestrian activities began with riding english, dabbling in local shows & riding in the Wayne-Dupage Hunt (a drag pack - not fox hunting) club. After some pretty bad wrecks & injuries to match I have jumped ship to enjoy western dressage & moseying’ on the trails with my husband Steve. I am a classically trained oil painter & photographer (I still think in ‘film’ setting) I love to meld different animals & subjects into what could be perceived as a ‘traditional setting’. My brain works akin to Dr. Seuss - designing & creating in my mind a very free, no rules, no box sort of outcome - quirky & eccentric?, perhaps. Painting furniture, decorative yet functional items, signs, event posters & just about anything I please is what I do.https://www.cindygalloway.comAbout Cindy Erkel and the Billy and Blaze project:One of those small bright spots of the late 1930’s was the first published work of C.W. Anderson, Billy and Blaze. This little book started Mr. Anderson on his prolific book publishing career and set the stage for many happy hours of reflection for children around the world. The hope and triumph of this gentle story contributed positively to the greater universal needs the times demanded. As such, the Billy and Blaze series has become a classic, cherished by those who grew up wishing the pictures of Billy and his bay pony, Blaze, could come to life. As a published children's book author, Cynthia Rogers Erkel took the opportunity to embellish the gentle story with the other people in Billy’s life whom must have existed somewhere between the lines. In order to make a film, the story needed to be expanded with dignity, staying as true to the spirit of the original as possible. The C. W. Anderson Estate, upon reading the script, endorsed it completely.https://www.billyandblazemovie.comTo learn more about Julianne and her partner Bruce Anderson, tune in to "Whinny Tales: Horse Stories, Pony Legends and Unicorn Yarns," the official podcast of Nature's View and The Marley Project. In this episode, Lisa and Julianne introduce listeners to artist Kody Bundy and filmmakers Karen Sailer and Charles Perry. The panel-style interview was recorded during the EQUUS Film and Arts Fest at the Kentucky Horse Park in December.Artist Kody Bundy creates her artwork with knives and brushes. According to Kody, "Growing up on the rolling prairie of my fathers farm, I had a deep appreciation for horses. When I wasn't spending time riding or just hanging out with them I was drawing them. After high school graduation I put away drawing and began my life working and training horses. During the Western Art Week in 2015 at Great Falls, MT I first observed a Scratchboard artist and was amazed by the detail she could achieve by using the tools she used to create her artwork. The panels I use are layered with white china clay and are airbrushed with either black India Ink or a choice of colored India Inks. Then the fun begins. I use razor blades/ X-acta knives, fiberglass brushes and nibs to remove the ink to engrave my image on the panel. Colored artwork is layered with ink using a paint brush. Imagine seeing a single blade of grass or a whisker in 3-D. Because that is what it is, etched in clay."www.kodybundy.comKaren Sailer, born in 1962, grew up in Germany and has lived in Ibiza, Spain since 1995. When asked when she was 14, what she wanted to be, she replied: veterinarian, textile designer, landscape architect, writer and filmmaker. She studied veterinary medicine, was chief designer of a carpet company in Nepal and then became Ibiza‘s most successful landscape architect. As a modern medicine woman, who has learned from the great wisdom keepers of our earth, she has cultivated her gift of turning deserts into paradises into soul-rejuvenating work with people and horses. Karen Sailer has often shed skin and, with the journey back to her past life as a warrior in 16th century France, opened a new chapter in her eventful life. The publication of a 12-minute short film in February 2019 about her experience with the old equestrian figure and the decision to openly and authentically share her magical journey on social media has suddenly made her a public person, which has been breathlessly followed by thousands of people.https://mmj.onesixdc.com/Producer, director, and cinematographer Charles Perry creates films that explore race relations, political issues, and interpersonal perspectives. His current film, ‘The Black Cowboy’ takes you into the world of African-American history and culture that is little known. Most of us know the cowboy as a gun toting white man like John Wayne. But the Hollywood portrayal of the Wild West is a whitewashed version of reality. It is thought that, on some Texas trails, about 25% of cowboys were black. The Black Cowboy is a look at a little known chapter in the history of the United States. It is a story that illuminates the often overlooked people who contributed to the building of the ideal that is the American dream.https://theblackcowboy.comTo learn more about Julianne and her partner Bruce Anderson, tune in to "Whinny Tales: Horse Stories, Pony Legends and Unicorn Yarns," the official podcast of Nature's View and The Marley Project. Bruce and Julianne have had a wonderful time for the past 4 years being a part of the EQUUS Film Festival. From sharing The Edge, a documentary filmed and directed by James O'Connor and Dylan Quesnel of The Art of Storytelling, to hosting the Camden SC Tour Stop for the festival, EQUUS has become a large part of the Nature's View experience. In this episode, Julianne and Lisa reminisce about past tour stops and discuss plans for the 2019 EQUUS Film and Arts Fest to be located at the Kentucky Horse Park.
Lisa Diersen is the Founder and Director of the EQUUS Film Festival, recognized as the largest showcase of equestrian film, art and literature in the world. An avid horsewoman and movie lover, Lisa believes in the power of telling stories through film. She founded the EQUUS Film Festival with the mission of showing the world how horses can bring everyone together regardless of race, age, gender, ability or disability. The EQUUS Film Festival launched in 2013 at the Arcada Theater in Lisa’s hometown of St. Charles, Illinois. The main feature was “The Horse Boy,” a documentary film about Rowan Isaacson, a young boy with autism. Lisa was moved by how the movie displayed the ups and downs of living with autism, as well as the healing role played by the horse. She knew that this message of unity and hope, shared through film, was critical to share with a broader audience. In 2014, the Festival moved to New York City, where it screened 100 movies from 20 countries. The next year, it moved to a larger venue at the Village East Cinema and began offering national and international tour stops throughout the year. In 2017, Lisa collaborated with documentary filmmaker Julianne Neal to create the Spotlight Rescue Series, now an annual feature at the Festival. The Spotlight Series tells the stories of cats, dogs, horses and humans in rescue situations, and the people who work tirelessly to save them. The EQUUS Film Festival showcases films from around the world, featuring a complex cross-section of the equestrian community. Films are selected for their ability to share the wonder of horses, to help us better understand the horse’s influence on our history, and to appreciate the healing that horses offer. Since its inception, the Festival has expanded to include works of literature and art which celebrate the Festival’s mission. In addition, organizers present the WINNIE Awards, which annually recognize excellence in equestrian film, writing and art. The 2019 EQUUS Film Festival will be held Dec. 5-8 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. Festival films, documentaries, shorts and more can also be viewed on the EQUUS Film Festival ON DEMAND channel, offered in collaboration with Horse Network. "Desert Flight" is an award-winning film documentary that explores the horse-human bond through the world of show jumping. Filmmaker Samia Staehle’s goal was to capture the visceral way horses enrich our lives and our senses. The film provides an honest look at how much the sport of show jumping means to its participants through the perspectives of equestrians from different walks of life. Shot over three weeks during the climactic end of the HITS Thermal horse show circuit in California, "Desert Flight" is both visually stunning and artistically compelling. Samia, a former Associated Press news producer and amateur show jumper from Washington state, chose the Thermal show grounds for her work partially because the stunning beauty of the desert reminded her of her former home in India. "Desert Flight" includes interviews from such luminaries of the sport as Richard Spooner, Will Simpson, Mandy Porter and Richard Fellers, but also includes vignettes from lesser-known equestrians with big dreams. "Desert Flight" was filmed by Tell Studios, whose Detroit, Michigan, based crew had no experience with horses. Instead, they were told to “go out and find what drives these horse people to do what they do every day.” "Desert Flight" made its world premiere at the FEI World Equestrian Games in Tryon, North Carolina, September 2018. The 39-minute film was named Best of Festival and Best Documentary at the 2018 EQUUS Film Festival in New York City and is available to US Equestrian Federation members on the USEF Network. Topics of Discussion: [:24] About today’s episode with Samia Staehle. [1:39] What does Samia remember most from Desert Flight’s production? On this episode you will hear from Elaine Heney from Grey Pony Films.Elaine has grown up with horses in Ireland and is lucky that her Father has a gentle hand, however it was on her travels around the world that her horsemanship changed forever, when in New Zealand Elaine saw a horse being ridden bareback with a single rein. It’s the old saying you can’t be what you can’t see.Once Elaine’s eyes were opened to this new way of being there was no going back for her, she then travelled to Australia and once home in Ireland she travelled to the UK to find a new way to train her horses.Elaine is a natural go getter in the world. She doesn’t seem to believe in can’t, she sees an opportunity and says yes, or makes a suggestion herself, and then figures out what has to happen next.Elaine is also an entrepreneur, she is the CEO of her company Chocolate Lab Aps. She has written 4 books, 3 of them on horses and horsemanship, one is called Ozzie The Story of a young Horse, it’s about her grey pony that she named after her journey in Australia and learning from Australian trainers, I've just read it and it's a lovely journey of how to train a problem horse. You can find these books on Amazon. So it’s absolutely no surprise to me that after being involved with a Mark Rashid movie in the US, she decided to teach herself how to become a movie maker. The Mark Rashid movie, Out of the Wild, which Elaine was the Executive producer, won the Directors Choice Award at the 2016 EQUUS Film Festival in New York.Elaine then went on to make a short film about Steve Halfpenny from Light Hands Equitation in South Australia. This film has been selected for 10 international film festivals, and won 11 awards, including best director, best cinematography and best documentary. The next natural step for Elaine was to make a feature length film about Steve Halfpenny, this film called Steve Halfpenny, Light Hands Equitation has just been released. I watched the film and it is beautifully done. Steve is a gentle and kind man with horses and the movie gives you a real sense of the type of horsemanship he does and how he was worked long and hard to make the world a better place for horses. With this movie Elaine has done her mentor proud.Elaine has now decided to expand her film making skills to incorporate anyone who is working with horses in an extraordinary way. She is still taking applications, you will hear more about this in the interview so sit back and enjoy this incredible woman. To connect with Elaine you can go to her website or Facebook Page.
A-circuit rider Ransome Rombauer chats about heading to Southern Methodist University to ride for the team, being named Brooke Junior ambassador and her secret weapon to ace the Equitation pattern. Dr. Sue Cain shares her wins in the category Equine Educational Training (Human) at the Equus Film Festival, for the book Horse Sense for Leaders. Jamie Jennings reads from Ask Monty.
