In this episode, Eric sits down with talented and celebrated artist, illustrator and author… Kadir Nelson! They discuss how he first discovered his artistic inclination and how it had been fostered from an early age; having been mentored by artist and art teacher Michael Morris; his uncle. His educational journey in art — having received a scholarship to study art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and upon graduating with highest honors, how he was summoned by DreamWorks Pictures to create conceptual artwork for Steven Spielberg's Oscar® nominated feature, “Amistad” and the animated feature “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron”. They explore his artistic style and how it evolved through the years. From creating paintings and portraits, to illustration and sculpture! His distinct style of urban realism and how it's reminiscent of turn of the century American painters and historical subjects, often telling a story with his art and emphasizing the heroic. They discuss Nelson's process — what moves him and where he draws inspiration from.  How he's displayed his works at notable exhibitions and in the permanent collections of several esteemed institutions… including the United States House of Representatives, The National Baseball Hall of Fame, the World Trade Center, the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery, the National Museum of African American History and Culture and most recently, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. They delve into exciting stories about how Nelson was commissioned by a host of distinguished clients including music legend John McClain; creating works in honor of Marvin Gaye... painting the cover artwork for Michael Jackson's posthumously released album, “Michael” and recording artist Drake's multi-platinum selling album, “Nothing Was the Same”. His experience of creating cover artwork for the New Yorker magazine; that pay tribute to historical and contemporary American figures in New York City and abroad. How Nelson has authored and illustrated several award-winning New York Times Best Selling picture books including, “WE ARE THE SHIP: The Story of Negro League Baseball” and the great honor he had of becoming the recipient of the prestigious Caldecott Medal for illustration..! Guest Bio: Kadir Nelson (b. 1974) is an award-winning American author and artist based in Los Angeles, California. He is the recipient of multiple awards from the Society of Illustrators in New York, including the prestigious Hamilton King Award as well the 2020 recipient of the Caldecott Medal and Coretta Scott King Award for illustration. He adds this to multiple Caldecott Honors, Coretta Scott King Author and Illustrator Awards, New York Times Best Illustrated Book Awards, several NAACP Image Awards and an Olympic Art Bronze medal, among others. Mr. Nelson has also created artwork for a host of distinguished clients, including but not limited to National Geographic, HBO, Nike, Disney, Hennessy, and Sony Music, for whom he painted the cover artwork for Michael Jackson's posthumously released album, “Michael,” which was listed in the Guinness Book of Records® for the largest poster in the world. Nelson's artwork was also featured on the cover of recording artist Drake's multi-platinum selling album, “Nothing Was the Same”; over a dozen commemorative US postage stamps honoring American legends, such as Major League All-Stars Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio, NBA great Wilt Chamberlain, and most recently Motown's Prince of Soul Marvin Gaye, which altogether have sold several million stamps. Nelson's primarily figurative paintings and sculptures focus on historical narratives and heroic subjects in American culture and are often informed by the Old Masters like Ingres, Michelangelo, Hopper, and Tanner. His sumptuous settings and characters, rich palette, and realistic, yet painterly technique speaks to both modern urban realism and masterly works of turn-of-the century American painters.

Barry revealed that the first song in the end credits of a film is eligible for an Oscar nomination. The David Byrne song This Is a Life that we briefly discussed in Byrned-Again (David Byrne and Lincoln & South Brewing) was nominated based on its presence in the end credits of Every Everything Everywhere All at Once. Barry and Abigail discussed the tendency of Disney animators to recycle various scenes in multiple movies. Watch some examples! Don't Let Go reminded Abigail of the Xanadu soundtrack, particularly Suddenly. Listen to our discussion of Xanadu in our episode Can I Do (Xanadu Soundtrack and English Beers). Run Free reminded Abigail of Stampede, the song played over the wildebeest stampede scene in The Lion King (also composed by Hans Zimmer!). Barry saw zebras “in the wild” at Hearst Castle. [School of Movies 2022] Back at the turn of the century Dreamworks were going after Disney hard. The first lasting challenge to the mouse monopoly of animated cinema in the west involved a similar hand-drawn traditional style to match their 90s Renaissance. Notably that was a period of amazing achievement following mediocrity, thanks in no small part due to Dreamworks very own Lord Farquaad, Jeffrey Katzenberg.   The four films in this soon-abandoned endeavour were The Prince of Egypt, which did gangbusters, horse-botherer Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, the box office pirate shipwreck, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, and this one, released in 2000, about a pair of ne-er-do-well conmen finding the fabled lost Aztec city against the disturbing backdrop of the arrival in Mesoamerica of Francisco Cortes. But all of these were releasing at the dawn of the Shrek Age, and they themselves represent a now-fading culture conquered by merciless superior technology.   Guests: Mackenzie & Nathan Eastram  @KenziePhoenix @bertnerdtram of Rainbow Connection @MuppetsPod and Video Game: The Movie: The Podcast  @VGTMPodcast

In this episode of DreamMachine, Patricia and Arun discuss about the 2021 DreamWorks animated film Spirit Untamed, the sequel to the 2002 film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and an origin film of the 2017 Netflix animated series Spirit Riding Free. The plot focuses on a rambunctious young girl named Lucky Prescott moving with her father in a small Western town called Miradero after almost ruining her grandfather's political campaign. While riding a train to Miradero, Lucky meets up with a young Kiger Mustang she calls Spirit. Along the way, Lucky makes friends with two girls named Pru and Abigail as they go through numerous adventures and stopping a group of wranglers who want to steal Sprit and his herd to sell for money. Will the girls rescue Spirit in time? When the movie was released in theaters, it made $42 million dollars out of a $30 million budget. As of 2022, Spirit Untamed is the lowest grossing DreamWorks movie. It had received mixed to negative reviews from critics calling it a tame, underwhelming, and predictable film with cheap looking animation and a downgrade from its predecessor. What do Arun and Patricia think of the film? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

It covers topics that mainstream media is just barely getting to now. If you thought it was a movie for 8 year old horse girls, that's only because in 2002 the rest of the world couldn't handle it. We have some HOT TAKES for you this week! On top of that, Emily is having dreams about her exes, Charlotte is coming for Emily's job, and Elaina has tea about the worst man we've ever talked about on the podcast. But we get HEATED this week and there's no holding back! Do you start your week with church and birth control, or do you start with horrible choices? There's a lot of valid arguments for what day the week starts, but the answers will NEVER be Saturday or Wednesday… We learn that Charlotte's top sheet ritual is psychopathic and you hear a classic Babes' opinion - go into college single (you're probably gay anyway)! Plus, hear Charlotte get really worked up for the first time in Babes history. And coming soon: the Babes' threesome! Full of witty anecdotes from the front lines (and tricks of the trade from between the lines), Crash! Boom! Bang! promises an enjoyable and educational read for writers and students of all levels. Although bullets and bloodshed abound in cinema, the lessons within will benefit screenwriters of all kinds of movies.

For our long weekend extravaganza, we're tackling not just one or two movies, but all four of Dreamwork Studio's 2-D animated movies - The Prince of Egypt, The Road to El Dorado, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, and Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas. We talk about the big middle finger that led to the formation of the studio, which of the four deserved a lot more than they got, and the evolution of 2-D animation, both from big screen to silver screen, and from apparent death to welcome revival.

In this episode of DreamMachine, Patricia and Arun discuss about the 2nd last 2D DreamWorks animated film, the 2002 movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. The movie is about a wild stallion named Spirit who lives a perfect life with his mother and his herd in the Wild West during the 19th century. However, he's captured by the U.S. army to tame him to be used to conquer Native American territory. But he's too wild to be controlled and befriends a Native American boy named Little Creek. They both escape and Little Creek returns home to his tribe where Spirit meets another horse named Rain. Spirit goes through his ups and downs from falling in love with Rain, being captured again, escaping from a fire, and reuniting with Little Creek. Will Spirit return home to his mother and herd? Or will he live a completely different life not familiar to what he's accustomed to? When the movie premiered in theaters, it was a modest hit making $122 million dollars with an $80 million dollar budget receiving positive reviews. However, it wasn't a major hit compared to their previous DreamWorks films, so it was gently pushed to the side. It wouldn't be until May 5, 2017 that Spirit would get an animated series on Netflix focusing on a little girl named Lucky who befriends Spirit and Rain's foal whose also named Spirit.

Lisa Diersen is the Founder and Director of the EQUUS Film Festival, recognized as the largest showcase of equestrian film, art and literature in the world. An avid horsewoman and movie lover, Lisa believes in the power of telling stories through film. She founded the EQUUS Film Festival with the mission of showing the world how horses can bring everyone together regardless of race, age, gender, ability or disability.   The EQUUS Film Festival launched in 2013 at the Arcada Theater in Lisa’s hometown of St. Charles, Illinois. The main feature was “The Horse Boy,” a documentary film about Rowan Isaacson, a young boy with autism. Lisa was moved by how the movie displayed the ups and downs of living with autism, as well as the healing role played by the horse. She knew that this message of unity and hope, shared through film, was critical to share with a broader audience.   In 2014, the Festival moved to New York City, where it screened 100 movies from 20 countries. The next year, it moved to a larger venue at the Village East Cinema and began offering national and international tour stops throughout the year. In 2017, Lisa collaborated with documentary filmmaker Julianne Neal to create the Spotlight Rescue Series, now an annual feature at the Festival. The Spotlight Series tells the stories of cats, dogs, horses and humans in rescue situations, and the people who work tirelessly to save them.   The EQUUS Film Festival showcases films from around the world, featuring a complex cross-section of the equestrian community. Films are selected for their ability to share the wonder of horses, to help us better understand the horse’s influence on our history, and to appreciate the healing that horses offer.   Since its inception, the Festival has expanded to include works of literature and art which celebrate the Festival’s mission. In addition, organizers present the WINNIE Awards, which annually recognize excellence in equestrian film, writing and art.   The 2019 EQUUS Film Festival will be held Dec. 5-8 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. Festival films, documentaries, shorts and more can also be viewed on the EQUUS Film Festival ON DEMAND channel, offered in collaboration with Horse Network.     Topics of Discussion: [:25] About today’s episode with Lisa Diersen. [1:39] What it is about film and art, that, when combined with horses, is especially meaningful? [5:47] Lisa speaks about the early days of building the EQUUS Film Festival. [10:45] Lisa shares her thoughts on how the EQUUS Film Festival has given a platform to — and broadened the reach of — talented filmmakers, writers, photographers, and artists. [15:46] Lisa explains how the EQUUS Film Festival is more than a showcase, but also a platform for education. [24:00] What are some of the unexpected things Lisa has learned as the director and founder of the EQUUS Film Festival? [33:18] Lisa speaks about the upcoming movie based on the 1930s book series, Billy and Blaze, by C.W. Anderson. [38:00] What does Lisa hope the new reality TV show, Horse Rescue Heroes, accomplishes? In fact, the screenplay was originally meant to be a vehicle to complete the third film starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. The Highwaymen uncovers the untold story of a pair of police offers who were brought out of retirement to catch the outlaws, Bonnie and Clyde. In this exclusive conversation, we discuss priceless lessons from Fusco’s mentors Waldo Salt (Midnight Cowboy) and Ring Lardner Jr. (MASH), similarities between Westerns and Kung Fu films, how he made a movie for Jackie Chan and Jet Li, his conversations with Redford and Newman, and the importance of virtuous characters in cinema.
