Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Philosophical considerations relevant to valuing continued human survival: Conceptual Analysis, Population Axiology, and Decision Theory (Andreas Mogensen), published by Global Priorities Institute on November 1, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This paper was published as a GPI working paper in September 2023. Introduction Many think that human extinction would be a catastrophic tragedy, and that we ought to do more to reduce extinction risk. There is less agreement on exactly why. If some catastrophe were to kill everyone, that would obviously be horrific. Still, many think the deaths of billions of people don't exhaust what would be so terrible about extinction. After all, we can be confident that billions of people are going to die - many horribly and before their time - if humanity does not go extinct. The key difference seems to be that they will be survived by others. What's the importance of that? Some take the view that the special moral importance of preventing extinction is explained in terms of the value of increasing the number of flourishing lives that will ever be lived, since there could be so many people in the vast future available to us (see Kavka 1978; Sikora 1978; Parfit 1984; Bostrom 2003; Ord 2021: 43-49). Others emphasize the moral importance of conserving existing things of value and hold that humanity itself is an appropriate object of conservative valuing (see Cohen 2012; Frick 2017). Many other views are possible (see esp. Scheer 2013, 2018). However, not everyone is so sure that human extinction would be regrettable. In the final section of the last book published in his lifetime, Parfit (2011: 920-925) considers what can actually be said about the value of all future history. No doubt, people will continue to suffer and despair. They will also continue to experience love and joy. Will the good be sufficient to outweigh the bad? Will it all be worth it? Parfit's discussion is brief and inconclusive. He leans toward 'Yes,' writing that our "descendants might, I believe, make the future very good." (Parfit 2011: 923) But 'might' falls far short of 'will'. Others are confidently pessimistic. Some take the view that human lives are not worth starting because of the suffering they contain. Benatar (2006) adopts an extreme version of this view, which I discuss in section 3.3. He claims that "it would be better, all things considered, if there were no more people (and indeed no more conscious life)." (Benatar 2006: 146) Scepticism about the disvalue of human extinction is especially likely to arise among those concerned about our effects on non-human animals and the natural world. In his classic paper defending the view that all living things have moral status, Taylor (1981: 209) argues, in passing, that human extinction would "most likely be greeted with a hearty 'Good riddance!' " when viewed from the perspective of the biotic community as a whole. May (2018) argues similarly that because there "is just too much torment wreaked upon too many animals and too certain a prospect that this is going to continue and probably increase," we should take seriously the idea that human extinction would be morally desirable. Our abysmal treatment of non-human animals may also be thought to bode ill for our potential treatment of other kinds of minds with whom we might conceivably share the future and view primarily as tools: namely, minds that might arise from inorganic computational substrates, given suitable developments in the field of artificial intelligence (Saad and Bradley forthcoming). This paper takes up the question of whether and to what extent the continued existence of humanity is morally desirable. For the sake of brevity, I'll refer to this as the value of the future , leaving the assumption that we conditionalize on human survival impl...

As AI becomes more sophisticated, there is a growing fear that it may surpass human intelligence, leaving us questioning our place in the world and our purpose in life. One of the key challenges posed by AI is the potential for it to replace human labor in many industries, leading to widespread job displacement and economic inequality. This could cause people to feel disconnected from their work and the broader societal structures that give their lives meaning. Additionally, the rise of AI may challenge our understanding of what it means to be human, leading to feelings of existential angst and confusion. Our environment is lowering sperm rates which has brought about a rise in infertility rates and a precipitous drop in child births. The feminizing of men is a real thing. Age-independent testosterone levels have been consistently dropping since the 1970's based on the current epidemiological reports. Penis sizes are shrinking. The “woke” blame men for the world's transgressions. Some women claim the world would be a better place without men. Men predominate the roles as farmers, pilots, construction workers, sewer workers, aerospace engineers, firefighters, EMT jobs, police officers and law enforcement and soldiers. More men are institutionalized, addicted to drugs and alcohol, commit suicide than women. “Horseshoe Crabs: How 350-Million-Year-Old Sea Creatures are Vital to Human Survival” is a award winning short film that played at the Science & Nature Film Festival. With the worldwide race to develop and manufacture vaccines came renewed interest in horseshoe crabs. These sea creatures are over 350 million years old and their blue blood has been critical to the development of COVID-19 vaccines. Their epicenter is here in the northeast and they descend on our beaches every spring in the thousands. Although the bright blue blood played a vital role in helping to end the pandemic, their numbers are in decline. We spoke with some "local heroes" who have been protecting them, and went out into the waters of Brooklyn with elementary students to monitor and tag them. Numerous species, including humans, depend on horseshoe crabs and it's up to us to help ensure their survival. Playing on the Film Festival Streaming service later this month. This is the 4th episode in a 5-part series on the Belong to You Habits and today we are talking about Eating to Thrive. If you missed the previous episodes in this series, I invite you to go back and start with Episode 41. The habits build on each other, and as such, it can be helpful to see them in relationship with the other habits. Eating to Thrive is simple, but not easy. We live in a culture that demonizes food, fosters a sense of confusion, shame, and disconnection from our bodies and ourselves, and then preys on that vulnerability by offering diets as a solution to our problems. Eating is necessary for survival and yet it's rife with politics, privilege, and cultural norms that complicate this basic need. We've been stripped of our connection with the land, with nature, with our ancestor's wisdom, with our cultural practices that center around food as celebration and reduced it to something we engage with out of obligation or fear. Based on our traumatic histories and the current culture, I know talking about food and eating habits is like walking into a minefield. And yet, I have experienced how powerful it can be to listen to authors and leaders who are speaking about food and politics, body positivity, body acceptance, and real solutions for feeding everyone. Food is fuel. It's also nourishment. It's sensual. It's ritual. You are sacred. Eating to Thrive can be a powerful way to honor your divinity, your inner connectivity with the earth, and with all beings. But not just any kind of water—water that's available at the right quantity, quality, place and time. When water falls outside of this Goldilocks zone, energy systems can unravel, sometimes in unexpected ways. Low water levels strain hydroelectric and thermal power production and restrict coal shipments by river. Extreme cold freezes water in natural gas infrastructure, causing blackouts. Examples abound. The irony is that the energy system fuels climate change, which in turn fuels water problems for the energy system.  So how do we address these vulnerabilities as we decarbonize? And how can we build a resilient water-energy system in an increasingly chaotic climate? In this episode, Shayle talks to Dr. Michael Webber, author of Thirst for Power: Energy, Water and Human Survival. Michael is a professor of energy resources at the University of Texas-Austin and chief technology officer at Energy Impact Partners, where Shayle is a partner.  They cover topics like: The surprising places we use water in energy, like extracting minerals and natural gas, growing crops for biofuels and sequestering carbon The ways energy improves the quantity and quality of water, allowing us to move water longer distances, reach deeper wells and desalinate water How to avoid exacerbating water problems as we decarbonize Whether cheap, abundant electricity from nuclear fusion will power wide-spread desalination Why the data on water systems is so scarce compared to energy systems How prescient the new Mad Max water-war movies are Resources: Yale University Press: Thirst for Power: Energy, Water and Human Survival The New York Times: Europe's Scorching Summer Puts Unexpected Strain on Energy Supply The New York Times: China's Record Drought Is Drying Rivers and Feeding Its Coal Habit   Catalyst is a co-production of Post Script Media and Canary Media. There is perhaps no one on the planet with a bigger-picture view on the impact of design—in all of its manifestations—than Paola Antonelli. As the Museum of Modern Art's senior curator of architecture and design as well as its director of R&D, Antonelli consistently expands notions and definitions of what might be considered “design,” and shows how, in no uncertain terms, design connects to practically everything we see, touch, hear, taste, smell, and do. With great passion and energy, she is the ultimate clear-eyed booster of this wide-ranging realm she holds dear. Antonelli's most recent output—the book Design Emergency: Building a Better Future (Phaidon)—is not only an outgrowth of her prolific 28-year career at MoMA (during which she has worked on related projects including the 2005 exhibition “Safe: Design Takes on Risk,” the 2015 book Design and Violence, and the 2019 Triennale di Milano exhibition “Broken Nature: Design Takes on Human Survival”), but also a result of the pandemic. During lockdown in spring 2020, Antonelli, together with the British design critic and writer Alice Rawsthorn, conceived and launched @designemergency on Instagram, a still-ongoing feed that highlights voices central to key global issues, all of them related to improving the world through design. The effort is yet another example of Antonelli's talent for synthesizing a vast array of provocative projects, designers, products, and ideas; bringing them to the forefront; and giving them much-needed attention. On this episode, Antonelli talks with Spencer about time as a frustration, the myth of speed, the importance of going with the flow, and the many design emergencies constantly taking place all around us.Special thanks to our Season 5 sponsor, L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Full transcript[04:15] Museum of Modern Art[04:15] @curiousoctopus[05:38] Objects of Design: From the Museum of Modern Art[06:09] “Machine Art”[12:54] “Humble Masterpieces”[15:44] “Mutant Materials in Contemporary Design”[17:42] “Design and the Elastic Mind”[25:14] “Neri Oxman: Material Ecology”[29:34] Design Emergency[29:34] Alice Rawsthorn[33:43] @design.emergency[45:18] “Items: Is Fashion Modern?”[47:02] The 3,000-Year History of the Hoodie[51:03] “Safe: Design Takes On Risk”[01:04:45] Design and Violence

How things that may appear random are actually the result of our foundational building blocks as with any other animal, but the development of the human brain has confused us in regards to just how the survival mechanism too has evolved to the world we have created. The POWER Podcast

It's not unusual for species to go extinct; it happens all the time. In fact, scientists estimate that at least 99.9% of all species of plants and animals that have ever lived on Earth are now extinct. That's pretty amazing, considering how many species still exist—up to 8.7 million, according to some experts. Mass extinction events, however, are not so common. A mass extinction event is when more than half of all species living at a given time go extinct over a relatively short period. The American Museum of Natural History found five significant mass extinction events in the Earth's history that it thought were worth highlighting on the museum's website. The largest of these happened about 250 million years ago, when up to 95% of existing species died out. Another that people may find particularly noteworthy occurred 65 million years ago. That one took out the dinosaurs, marking a major turning point in history. What hasn't happened in the past is a mass extinction event caused by humans. However, Richard Heinberg, author of the soon-to-be-released book titled Power: Limits and Prospects for Human Survival, thinks that may be coming, and some of the reasons are detailed in his 416-page book. “The book is a ‘big picture' book, and I address three huge questions in it. One is: How did we—just one species—come to overpower the rest of nature to the point where we're changing the climate and triggering what looks like it may be a mass extinction event? The second question is: How have we come to oppress one another in so many and so brutal ways? And the third is: Is there any way we can come to terms with power in such a way as to turn things around?” Heinberg said as a guest on The POWER Podcast. Heinberg said people around the world must switch from fossil fuels to alternative energy sources to limit climate change, but he was pessimistic about the prospects for doing so quickly enough to make a difference in the long term. “It's going to be very, very difficult to do that in fact, and for a number of reasons,” said Heinberg. “One, of course, is just the fact that solar and wind, which are our main candidates for replacing fossil fuels, they produce electricity, but electricity is only about 20% of global energy usage. So, the other 80%, we use solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels for agriculture and transportation, and industrial processes like smelting metals, and making cement for concrete, and on, and on, and on—a lot of high-heat industrial processes. Those things are going to be hard to electrify.” The only way to “get to the other side,” according to Heinberg, is for people in industrial countries such as the U.S. to reduce their overall energy usage pretty substantially. “That sounds really daunting, but it certainly is possible to do,” he said. “Europeans use half the energy that Americans do, and yet their quality of life is quite acceptable by anybody's standards. So, we're going to have to find ways of providing basic human needs in ways that use the least amount of energy, and then supply renewable energy for those purposes.” “I speak frequently to experts, not just in climate science, but in other environmental fields and social fields and so on. And everyone that I talk to is really, really concerned about where all of this is headed. So, if you're worried, you're not alone, the experts are worried too. But, we really have to start talking honestly with each other about all of this and getting our heads out of the sand because it's just too easy to live in denial,” Heinberg said. “We're going to have to step up to the plate and really show that we're a species that deserves to survive.”

Professor Richard Falk taught at Princeton University Politics department for over 40 years and has published more than 50 books and many articles on global politics and international law. A self-described, “citizen pilgrim”, he decided early on that his career would combine academic work with an ethical obligation to speak out on questions of global and local justice. A prominent voice in the nuclear deproliferation movement, Professor Falk was chair of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation's Board of Directors until 2012. And in his most prominent role in recent years, in 2008 Professor Falk was appointed UN Special Rapporteur on Palestinian Human Rights by the UN Human Rights Council where he served until 2014. Perhaps less well known, Professor Falk was a key figure in scholarly political debates on world order and systems change through the 1960s and 70s, alongside scholars including Ken Waltz, Hedley Bull, Harold Lasswell and Immanuel Wallerstein. Professor Falk was also one of the first global political scholars to take seriously the ecological, demographic and biosocial aspects of the future of world order, as explored in his 1971 book ‘The Endangered Planet'. We discuss this rich intellectual heritage, what lessons we might excavate from these earlier debates for today, and how the shadow of history looms large over our current challenges, which, while formidable, also present opportunities for revitalising understandings of citizenship in our uniquely globalised civilisation. * We unfortunately experienced some technical problems with the sound in this episode.
