Think Out Loud
Oregon's largest Medicaid provider on gender-affirming care

Think Out Loud

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 11, 2025 16:41

Last month, President Trump signed an executive order directing federally run insurance programs, including Medicaid and TRICARE for military families, to drop coverage for gender-affirming care. Last week, Oregon’s attorney general joined a lawsuit with Washington State and Minnesota against the Trump administration over that order, which also seeks to cut off federal funding from institutions that provide hormone therapy, puberty blockers and surgical treatment for people under 19. The state’s largest Medicaid provider, CareOregon, covers medically-necessary, transition-related health care, which is currently required under state law. Eric Hunter, President and CEO of CareOregon, joins us to discuss how the health insurer is responding to the demands of the federal government.

In our latest "Meet the Board" podcast episode, Managed Healthcare Executive Editors caught up with board member, Eric Hunter, CEO of Care Oregon, to discuss a number of topics, with one including the merger that never closed with SCAN Health Plan due to local opposition from Oregonians, emphasizing the need for partnerships to meet scaling and capital requirements.  On the other hand, Hunter also praised Oregon's careful Medicaid redetermination, resulting in a smaller enrollment decline than expected.  He also highlighted a new preventive medicine residency program with Oregon Health and Science University to improve healthcare for populations most at need.  Before concluding the conversation with a question on what public official or figure of past or present he'd love to sit down over dinner with, Hunter briefly covered cybersecurity challenges and the potential impact of healthcare issues in the upcoming election.

The Backcourt starts at 1:00 Hoping Jaelin Llewellyn's length solves some of the guard defense because there's been a high floor for opponent possessions with the shorties. Don't know if he can translate into a point guard since he's always been more of an SG but makes good decisions and shares the ball for a #2 scorer on a good team. Won't have to be that here. Dug is a pest on defense, too small to hold up as a true freshman, but supposed to be quite the passer and can shoot. Kobe Bufkin is young and just gained a lot of poundage, is Caris-like but NOT Caris. Can shoot. At the three is Jett, and he can shoot too—defense might be a work in progress this year. Joey Baker can give you 15 minutes a game as a JAS. If Isaiah Barnes can play now he will play now. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. The Frontcourt starts at 31:08 The four is going to be Terrance Williams II and we all trip over ourselves to be the first to hint, then say he was outplaying Caleb Houstan last year. Like him at the four where his agility is not as big of a deal and he adds to the spacing. Backup is murky—will Youssef Khayat be big enough to assist here as a Franz-alike by later in the year? How about Jace Howard? Go small? Tschetter's defensive liabilities for his offensive prowess? With all these shooters Hunter Dickinson gets to feast. Won't have to stretch as much this year, will get more assists just because the guys he's passing to will make the shots. Best player in the league, better at drop coverage. Tarris Reed has treetrunk legs, gets to develop behind Hunter for a year. 3. How it Fits and Around the League starts at 58:02 Who is Juwan Howard's favorite son? The Big Ten is down as we cast about for contenders. Not buying Indiana's case of Xavier Johnson and TJD because what kind of case is that, except probably the best one in the B10 right now. Not State—they don't have a center save Mady Sissoko. Illinois? They lost as much as they brought in (lots). Purdue? No point, Brandon Newman and Zach Edey and Eric Hunter and Mason Gillis will certainly get them in the playoffs but scoring will be an issue even if Caleb Furst blows up like we think he will. Ohio State lost a ton, added transfers and freshmen—all slice and dicers save the JAS from WVU—to Zed Key and Justice Sueing. Iowa will be Iowa, replacing Keegan Murray with his literal clone Kris. Seth tries to sell us all on Rutgers because of continuity, but Geo Baker and Ron Harper Jr. are gone. Wisconsin…errrr….they'll probably have someone—not Tyler Wahl—emerge. Maryland takes a step back, will play small with Donta Scott at C as Kevin Willard takes a Year Zero. Penn State has a 6x transfer. Minnesota…isn't Nebraska. Pete Nance is gone from NWern—GO CHASE AUDIGE GO! 4. Hot Takes and Around the Big Ten With Jamie Mac starts at 1:27:45 Takes hotter than a four year old that just discovered a piece of carrot in her ramen. Despite Ohio State winning 54-10 against Iowa, there is a lot to unpack. CJ Stroud had a typical day but Ohio State's rushing offense struggled. Iowa turned the ball over six time. Ohio State only scored one touchdown in their first ten drives. Iowa was desperate enough to bring in Padilla and it was also a disaster. Are we actually seeing the unraveling of the Ferentz era (or will it still take three years for Iowa to finally let him go?). Iowa's offensive EPA was -51 points... NEGATIVE FIFTY ONE. Michigan might actually have a reasonable enough chance to slow down Ohio State's offense enough to... win. Penn State bounces back and holds Mo Ibrahim to only 102 yards (3.4 avg). Sean Clifford played a great game. Tanner Morgan was out with a concussion and backup Athan Kaliakmanis did not look as good. Jamie has discovered an interesting stat about Minnesota coaching regimes. No Taulia Tagovailoa for Maryland against Northwestern, Northwestern's quarterback is Some Guy. This is just a totally differeny Maryland team right now. Maryland's 330 lbs center got flagged for doing a cartwheel - worth it. Need Penn State and Maryland to keep winning to help Michigan's chances of making the CFP just in case Michigan loses to Ohio State and goes 11-1 - imagine if Michigan missed the CFP because they cancelled the UCLA game. Wisconsin scores 21 points against Purdue in the first quarter and then glide paths to the finish line. This was Wisconsin's 16th straight win against Purdue. Rutgers vs Indiana - confirmed, both teams are bad.  MUSIC: "Soul Flower"—Pharcyde "Leave It In My Dreams"—The Voidz "I Can't Explain"—David Bowie “Across 110th Street”

The original Biker Cross was built as a dual slalom course, however in recent years the surrounding vegetation has had more of a singletrack route in mind. The rebuild has focused on bringing the course back to its former glory in this regard, now plenty wide allowing slower riders to take the lower route and more advanced riders to tackle the high line packed with bermy jibs on this flowing roller coaster of a trail. Every berm is being rebuilt with playful, springy transitions, and jumps through the flats have been torn down to make room for creative new features with multiple line options to switch up your descent.   Silver Star, BC Silver Star Mountain Resort, located in Vernon, British Columbia, recently announced that it plans to add 25 kilometers of new cross country mountain bike trails this year, with more in the works for 2015. When complete, the expansion's estimated cost will equal more than $250,000 and will provide riders of all abilities a more diverse selection of trail options. Silver Star began its expansion in 2013 to introduce a new XC, all-mountain riding component to the resort.   Silver Star has expanded its downhill trail network to provide riders with the option of riding a new intermediate trail from the summit to the mountain base. Jedi Mind Trick, a blue trail that runs from the base of the mountain to half-way up is being extended to the summit and the double black diamond trail Pro-Star – Walk the Line, that runs from the summit to half way down the mountain will be extended to the bottom. The trail network that will link existing trails with new trails are currently in their final stages of construction.   Mammoth Bike Park, CA: Mammoth will be opening the gondola this weekend, which is one week earlier than originally planned. MTBparks.com friend Eric Hunter tells MTBparks that trails at Mammoth Bike Park are in amazing shape right now.   Snow Summit, CA The Snow Summit Bike Park at Big Bear flips the schedule to daily operations next week. This week the Snow Summit Trail Crew made their way over to Miracle Mile to put in some work! The Down-Flat-Up Bridge on Lower Miracle has been shortened and the mandatory-left when airing off the bridge will now line up better and take you into a new jump! Basically this section of trail is going to be faster and better. They hauled in tons of pavers to make the section ride faster.   China Peak, CA There's still time to register for the VP Components EnduroFest coming up June 21 & 22. Running at high elevation, this event features a course that puts the “endure” into enduro, with three arduous transfer climbs plus three technically demanding timed downhill stages on loose, rocky and dusty terrain. The winner in each category is based on the fastest total time in the three special stages. The eleven categories include beginner, sport, expert and pro riders. $4,000 goes to the top 20 Pro/Open men; with $1,000 split between the top ten Pro/Open women. Awards go three deep in all other categories.   Park City Mountain Resort, UT Summer arrived in Park City last week as the resort fired up the Town Lift for mountain bikes on June 6. The Crescent Lift is scheduled to open June 21, which will provide more than 70 miles of lift-accessed terrain on the town’s centralized resort.   Upcoming Events:   Blue Mtn PA - PA State Championship - June 22   Sun Valley, ID: June 27-29, 2014Part of the North American Enduro Tour This two day race featuring an evening prologue on the 27th promises to be one of the longest and most grueling enduro races riders will find anywhere in North America.   British Columbia June 28-July 5, 2014 BC Bike Race, all competitors start each day together in a mass start, working their way against the clock and through the course to the daily finish line. Several years ago in Denver, one of Hunter’s LDS colleagues noticed during General Conference that President Hinckley’s voice would crack in a predictable way based on new understanding of speech production. This sparked Hunter's curiosity. Using recordings from the BYU speeches database, Hunter and some of his students tested this hypothesis and have been able to analyze changes in President Hinckley's voice as he aged. “If the voice mechanism is changing, so is swallowing, lung usage and related pulmonary function,” Hunter said. “If some of these characteristics that we've measured can be tracked over time, we can look for changes that might reflect changes in such vital life functions as breathing and swallowing.” The methodology Hunter and his team have developed can be adapted so recordings from BYU and the Church's archives can be used in a wide range of other research paths. His work will be significant across a variety of fields, including communications sciences, medicine, speech therapy, linguistics, biomechanics and physics. Hunter will be speaking on Wednesday September 21, 2011 at 4 p.m. in room C215 of the Eyring Science Center. Students and professors from all colleges and departments are invited to attend. —Erik Westesen, College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences
