This week actor and comedian Eugene Mirman discusses his incredible body of comedic work and his documentary It Started As A Joke which chronicles the 10 years of the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, an independent festival started on a lark by the Bob's Burgers' alum. As explained by comics like Kumail Nanjiani and Kristen Schaal, Mirman is essentially a founding father of the Brooklyn comedy scene (he's been called the original “influencer”), and the festival's success is a testament to his impact. But, true to its title, there's a bit more on the documentary's mind; we're also introduced to Mirman's wife, Katie Westfall Tharp, and learn how the two fell in love, had a son, moved to Cape Cod, and fought through Tharp's cancer diagnosis and later recurrence. Tragically, Tharp died almost a year after It Started As A Joke premiered at SXSW. In its depiction of her kind spirit, the film now doubles as a bittersweet tribute to a loved one gone too soon. Ultimately, this is a candid conversation about doing work that makes you happy, pushing through the inevitable hardships and learning curves that follow, and having the courage to love with everything you have despite the pain of loss. It Started As A Joke is available on Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, FandangoNow, Sony, and Microsoft Xbox. A regular performer in comedy clubs, casinos and theaters all over the country, Pat has been a choice opener for Sebastian Maniscalco, Tom Segura and Dan Cummins. Back in 2016, aka a zillion horror-movie lifetimes ago, my friend Eugene and I had a late-night conversation about fame, comedy, having a newborn baby boy, and much much more. I re-edited it to put it back out here on the occasion of the streaming release of the wonderful documentary "It Started as a Joke," which follows the decade long run of the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival along with the parallel story of Eugene and his wife Katie's battle with her cancer. That may sound like a rough juxtaposition, but it's extremely well done. You'll laugh, you'll cry - see it, it's not like you don't have any free time right now.http://prettygoodfriends.com/it-started-as-a-jokeBest to all in these strange, tough times.-j See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Eugene Mirman is perhaps best known for voicing Gene Belcher on ‘Bob’s Burgers.’ But as his new documentary ‘It Started as a Joke’ proves, he is also one of the most innovative and influential stand-up comics of his generation. In this episode, we check in with Eugene via Zoom from his home on Cape Cod before sharing the longer interview we taped with him before the coronavirus pandemic forced us all indoors. He talks about starting the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival “as a joke,” learning to get more personal in his comedy and of course, ‘Bob’s Burgers.’Twitter: @EugeneMirman and @mattwilstein | Instagram: @eugenemirman and @lastlaughpodStream ‘It Started as a Joke’ on Amazon Prime Video.Highlights from this episode and others at The Daily Beast.Go to ratethispodcast.com/laugh to leave us a rating and review. I am obsessed with the creative process which led me to becoming a fan of Jim Tews's podcast "Quitting Comedy." http://www.jimtews.com/podcast.html He has great comedians talk about their career and process by starting with the premise : Have you ever thought of quitting comedy? Comedian Jim Tews learned a lot about discipline from his years in the Coast Guard which turned out instrumental in helping his personal development and managing his creativity productively. In this session with Jim, we learn about his less-than-typical, comedy career journey from being brought up in a blue collar family from Allentown, Pa. and being told by his guidance counselor in high school that he wasn't “college material” to enlisting in the Coast Guard and making a successful comedy career for himself. It turns out being yelled at constantly is good for any creative career really. More about Jim here: http://www.jimtews.com/ and here: Jim Tews made his stand-up television debut on Last Comic Standing and was featured in an episode of Louie in 2014. Previously he was one of 2011's New Faces at Just for Laughs Montreal and has performed in the Bridgetown Comedy Festival, the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, and SF Sketchfest. He recently created/cowrote and starred in The Undone Sweaters web series about a sociophobic Weezer cover band, which was featured on Funny or Die and Nerdist.com. He also created the HBO Labs's web series The Opener and recently directed a feature length documentary about Cleveland's independent comedy scene called Make Fun. Felines of New York is his first book, and perhaps his greatest achievement to date.

At the tenth and final Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, a motley crew of daring storytellers boldly ventured onstage to have their stories cross-examined by the festival's very namesake. Michael Showalter reminisces about experiences touring with Eugene, Caroline Rhea remembers not being remembered by a comedy legend, and Ira Glass shares an unaired This American Life story. Titular, eponymous, and always curious: Eugene Mirman was present at his own festival to question these stories! In each episode of the Audible Comedy series Hold On, host Eugene Mirman (Bob's Burgers) pauses the funny stories of comedians and performers to get the skinny behind the story. Featured and future guests include: Jim Gaffigan, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Lisa Lampanelli, Mike Birbiglia, Reggie Watts, Kumail Nanjiani, Maria Bamford, David Cross, John Mulaney, and more! Elna Baker - writer, storyteller, performer, comedian and author of the 2010 memoir, “The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance.” You may have heard her tell stories on the Moth, TAL, among other places. On top of telling and producing stories for This American Life for six years, she’s also on the staff of the show. I’m not sure exactly what her title is, but it’s along the lines of producer, consultant, comedian. We talk about that a bit. We’ve met a few times through NYC comedy-world friends. Earlier this year we ended up having dinner with a group of friends after a show at the NY Podcast Festival. I found myself sitting across from Elna, and her This American Life boss, Ira Glass, and while Ira was uninterested, at best, when I found my way around to talking about my podcast - something to the effect of “Why would anyone want to listen to famous people talk about fame” - I clarified that it wasn’t just famous people talking about it, point is, Ira was clearly never going to be a listener, let alone a guest, Elna, perhaps out of politeness, seemed genuinely interested in the topic. And now, here she is. It’s especially gracious and trusting of Elna, of anyone involved with a show like TAL, to come on a show that’s all about lengthy, free-form conversations, because it’s pretty much the opposite of what they do over at TAL, which is to make beautiful, challenging, highly produced-polished little gems of thought and storytelling. We talked about some of her recurring themes in her work - family, sex, Mormonism and her leaving it, her 100-pound weight loss and the accompanying change in self-and-others-perception.We also ended up revisiting a live show Elna and colleagues put on six years ago at the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival that featured Ira Glass, Rachel Maddow, John Hodgman and a slew of others. That evening isn’t available on the internet, or anywhere, that lives on only in infamous legend, which I am proud to have a small part in keeping alive. It was called “The Drunk Show,” and … well, you’ll hear about it.We talked on the phone on a Friday evening in early October. Maeve Higgins has performed all over the world, including in Edinburgh, Melbourne and, most recently, Erbil. Now based in New York, she’s made a name for herself there too. In a good way! She co-hosts Neil deGrasse Tyson’s StarTalk on National Geographic and has appeared in Comedy Central’s Inside Amy Schumer. Maeve hosts a live show every month with author Jon Ronson and is a frequent guest at the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival. She is writing a book of funny essays for Penguin, due for publication in late 2017 (or perhaps a bit later). Maeve also makes great radio and is currently hosting a terrific(!) podcast about immigration called ‘Maeve In America’ for First Look Media. Born an anchor baby in London, Mehran single-handedly rescued his Iranian family from the Ayatollah Khomeini. Ever gracious, teenage Mehran evened the score in the United States by dropping out of college and taking up homosexuality. Honing his sharp sense of the absurd while working at Harvard University, Mehran's early experience navigating regime change came in handy when he personally escorted deposed president Larry Summers off the property. He would later go on to produce several successful shows with the University-affiliated Oberon Theater. A quick riser in the Boston comedy scene, Mehran was named Best Comedian in Boston by the Boston Phoenix, and was a two time finalist in the International Boston Comedy Festival. At Emerson College's Semel Theater, Mehran recorded a half hour of comedy for Die Laughing, produced by Friends co-creator, Kevin Bright. Mehran has opened for such acts as Maz Jobrani, Tom Green and Eugene Mirman. He works regularly with some of the hottest up-and-comers in comedy and has been in the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival for the last four years. He has played to crowds of thousands at leading venues, like the Wilbur Theater, the Berklee Performance Center, and the Lisner Auditorium and has toured extensively at colleges and universities. A leading MC in the emerging neo-burlesque scene, Mehran plays to an audience of 30,000 each December at the historic Somerville Theater. He recently moved to Manhattan, where he lives with his husband and his tiny idiot dog. We discuss his time working at Beth Israel and Harvard (Larry fucking Summers), his experience with the Iranian revolution, dogs, why medical science is bullshit (http://acsh.org/2015/05/science-publication-is-hopelessly-compromised-say-journal-editors/), marijuana dispensaries, transracial, being a gay iranian, Amanda Palmer, and magic. According to the Elders, it's time to celebrate 75 years of Captain Marvel! Yes, young Billy Batson has been screaming "Shazam!" and fighting crime (and Superman's lawyers) as Captain Marvel since 1940. This week we'll look at the comic books, the movie serials, the cartoons, and of course, the live action Saturday morning TV series from Filmation (from which we learned that driving around in a Winnebago looking for troubled teens is not NECESSARILY creepy). Along the way we'll meet Mary Marvel (Billy's surprise twin sister!), Captain Marvel Junior (who was a huge influence on Elvis Presley, believe it or not), a talking tiger, an evil worm, and maybe even Hoppy the Marvel Bunny. We'll learn about the weird 1960s version of Captain Marvel, who could separate his head and limbs from his torso. (Then again, everyone could probably do that, at least once.) We'll learn how to stop your city from being buried in strawberry Jell-O. (Folks, it's not a question of if it will happen, but when.) And we'll learn why we should get totally liquored up for the Shazam movie. (Just don't tell those pesky Elders.) Also: National Whatever Day, Super Megafest, and the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival. That should keep you busy until the evil Dr. Sivana destroys us all.

Don't miss this hilarious discussion of nurture, nutrition, and how to milk a bat. Hosted by Chris Duffy. Recorded at the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival in Brooklyn, NY. Technical direction by Kevin Brunswick.
On today's show I talk to stand-up and actor Eugene Mirman. Originally from the USSR, Eugene and his family emigrated when he was four, settling in Massachusetts. From an early age, Eugene was interested in comedy, and he even studied it in college. He began performing stand-up in 1992 and since then has become a veritable brand. He's had recurring roles on shows like Flight of the Conchords and Delocated, he currently voices Gene Belcher on Bob's Burgers, he created The Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, and he frequently co-hosts Neil deGrasse Tyson's science show, Star Talk Radio. And that barely captures even a centimeter of Eugene's bio!Check out the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, and follow me on Twitter!
On this bonus episode of Beginnings, we break our usual format and delve into the creative process by chatting with Caroline Creaghead about booking and producing a live comedy show. As the booker and producer for Big Terrific, Get It Out There: Comedy by BAM and IFC, The Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, her own weekly show at Union Hall, Creaghead and Company, as well as many others, Caroline has been responsible for putting together some of the best shows in New York City, and in 90 minutes, she walks me through the nuts and bolts of creating a successful live show, as well as discussing cynical networking and the morality of unpaid internships.Check out the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter, and come see a live taping of The Pete Holmes Show!
