Fictional superhero appearing in comic books published by Marvel Comics

Alan Davis is one of the most consistent artists in the business. More than five decades into his career, the English cartoonist has worked with some of the biggest names in comics, among them Alan Moore and Chris Claremont, and drawn some of the most beloved characters, from Batman to the X-Men. Radio Rackham's Matthias Wivel caught up with him at the Copenhagen Comics Festival for a chat about his work and career. We discuss his beginnings on the British comics scene, notably his work with Moore and others on Captain Britain (1981-85), Dr & Quinch and Marvelman (1982-83). Davis brings to life that heady, innovative time of youthful enthusiasm and describes how much of it descended into ‘farce' because of personality clashes. Among the highlights of Davis's career in the United States, we have the story of how an editorial mandate over how to drawn Batman's gun caused him to quit the lucrative Batman: Year 2 (1986) after one issue. We hear how Claremont is “the most creative person” Davis ever worked with and he is mystified by our report that their joint work,Excalibur (1988-93), has become a something of a cult classic for its queer undertones and general horniness. We also discuss series such as ClanDestine (1994-95) , JLA: The Nail (1998) and Fantastic Four: The End (2007), all high points in Davis's career as a writer-artist. Overall, it is a portrait of a jobbing artist in the old school tradition, proud of his speed and ability to deliver on time, meek and drily humorous.

Warning: this is gonna get confusing. We discuss the long history of Marvelman/Miracleman/totally not Captain Marvel. Even Jon is lost by the end...
Read More ...

Dream of Flying with Alex, Jmike, and Case! They're taking a look at the incredibly influential early 80's story, whether they call it Marvelman or Miracleman! So whisper “Kimota” and join the Red Kings in Olympus!
For the first time ever, Chris and Reggie's three-part Marvelman/Miracleman Weird Comics History deep-dive (originally featured in episodes 27-29 of that series), compiled in one over-stuffed episode! Part One: You ever have a Dream of Flying? Join Chris and Reggie as they dive deep into the world of Marvelman. From his humble beginnings as a British replacement for a certain Big Red Cheese, to the stories people actually care about (ie. those written by Alan Moore, err... we mean "The Original Writer". We will be sharing this crazy story over the next three installments. This time around you will be introduced to the reasons behind Marvelman's creation, we'll introduce you to his creator Mick Anglo... and discuss the move from Silver Age silliness to cynical 80's grittiness (including a purposely brief synopsis of the WARRIOR Magazine run... because we really don't want to "spoil" that for our dear listeners). It's a fun-filled hour of chatter... and we don't even get to the lawsuit yet! The... other lawsuit... the other, other lawsuit. Part Two: There comes a time when everybody has to leave home... and that's no different for our new friend Marvelman, who, during this episode makes the trek across the Atlantic, and starts getting published stateside by Eclipse Comics. Not before a little tweak in his title though. For their middle installment of Exploring the Mysteries of MarveREDACTED... let's try that again. Exploring the Mysteries of MarREDACTED. Hmm... okay, we'll do it their way... For this installment of Exploring the Mysteries of Miracleman, Chris and Reggie discuss more growing pains than a house full of Seavers when they continue their long-form look at our Kimota-shouting hero. This week they will set the stage for the domestic (if you live in the United States) arrival (and sorta-kinda revival) of Miracleman... and briefly discuss the remaining Alan Moore run as well as the still unfinished Neil Gaiman run. Then... they start getting into the nitty-gritty, and really the "meat and potatoes" of any real Miracleman discussion... the rights! Welcome to the story, Mr. McFarlane... hope you survive the experience! Part Three: Order in the court! (Ham and Cheese) For the final installment of "Exploring the Mysteries of Miracleman", your favorite legal eagles Chris and Reggie don their long robes and powdered wigs and do their darnedest to figure out just who owns Marvelman! They will discuss the wheelings and dealings of one Spawny fellow... and spend far too much time discussing the characters of Angela, Cogliostro, and Medieval Spawn... but they promise it all (mostly) fits the story. Overall, it's an hour and change of audio likely to make you even more curious and confused about Marvelman, and just how his story finally "shook out". -- https://www.patreon.com/xlapsed X-Lapsed Voicemail: 623-396-5375 (or, 623-396-JERK) Twitter: @acecomics / Instagram: @90sxmen weirdcomicshistory@gmail.com chrisandreggie.podbean.com The All-New, All-Different chrisisoninfiniteearths.com facebook.com/groups/90sxmen

Marvelman originated as a Captain Marvel knockoff (Billy, not Carol) and had a whole bunch of cheerful childlike adventures. Then legendary writer Alan Moore had a go at the character, and nothing was ever the same again. Chandler Klang Smith, author of The Sky Is Yours, drops in to offer her two cents on the subversion of common superhero tropes and how Marvelman often feels like an early exploration of themes Moore developed more completely in Watchmen.

Sorry for the delay folks but we're finally back to wrap up *checks notes* Captain Marvel Part 3? Or is this Shazam? Yeah we waste no time in this episode addressing the elephant in the room: What the heck do we call this character? Kriss & Dpalm have varying opinions but one thing that is agreed upon is that this is all DC's fault. They destroyed Fawcett because the "Superman Clone" was more popular than Superman, then tried to resurrect the character 20 years later after the name had already been registered by Marvel. So we're covering the ups and downs of the "Original Captain Marvel". We cover the Whiz Comics years, the DC relaunch, Roy Thomas' interesting yet unfinished attempt at the character, Jerry Ordway's Power of Shazam and the struggle of DC trying to figure out what to do with the character that once outsold Superman Also...one of you asked for this so Dpalm also does a quick explanation of Marvelman. Just know it involves Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison. Buckle in folks. You're in for a ride. We’re going to spend the next month tackling one of the most convoluted and messy names in comics! Not Shazam, not Marvelman, but the one (of seven), the ONLY (of seven), CAPTAIN MARVEL! This episode focuses on the Kree warrior, Captain Mar-Vell! What a very different and original name! From his first appearance, through the […]
Strap in for one of the wildest stories in comics – on the creator and publisher side of things! Miracleman, originally known as Marvelman, has been through two hiatuses of 20+ years each and a battle over rights to the character, plus the previously-mentioned name change. And that’s not to mention the dark, dark turn … Continue reading #606 Marvelman, Miracleman, and Moore
This deconstruction of the superhero genre was mired in legal debacles and intellectual property battles for decades before we could get a chance to read it. We look at that convoluted history, in light of Alan Moore's attempt to reimagine and criticize the themes of superhero comics. Interested in the media we discussed this episode? Order in the court! (Ham and Cheese) For their final installment of "Exploring the Mysteries of Miracleman", your favorite legal eagles Chris (@acecomics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) don their long robes and powdered wigs and do their darnedest to figure out just who owns Marvelman! -- You can get a hold of us at weirdcomicshistory@gmail.com -- For our weekly writings check out www.weirdsciencedccomics.com For Chris' daily writings check out www.chrisisoninfiniteearths.com -- Check out www.weirdcomicshistory.blogspot.com for show notes! -- Visit us on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/CosmicTMillHistory and on Twitter @CosmicTMill -- We're also now on YouTube... just search "weirdcomicshistory" (all one word) and you ought to be able to find us! -- Subscribe to the show on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Play, iHeartRadio... wherever's most convenient! There comes a time when everybody has to leave home... and that's no different for our new friend Marvelman, who, during this episode makes the trek across the Atlantic, and starts getting published stateside by Eclipse Comics. Not before a little tweak in his title though. For their middle installment of Exploring the Mysteries of MarveREDACTED... let's try that again. Exploring the Mysteries of MarREDACTED. Hmm... okay, we'll do it their way... For this installment of Exploring the Mysteries of Miracleman, Chris (@acecomics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) discuss more growing pains than a house full of Seavers when they continue their long-form look at our Kimota-shouting hero. Next week we will do our best to "tie a bow" on Miracleman, his story, and the creative forces all vying for ownership! You ever have a Dream of Flying? Join Chris (@acecomics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) as they dive deep into the world of Marvelman. From his humble beginnings as a British replacement for a certain Big Red Cheese, to the stories people actually care about (ie. those written by Alan Moore, er we mean "The Original Writer". -- You can get a hold of us at weirdcomicshistory@gmail.com -- For our weekly writings check out www.weirdsciencedccomics.com For Chris' daily writings check out www.chrisisoninfiniteearths.com For our half-hearted blog/image depository check out www.weirdcomicshistory.blogspot.com - Currently featuring pictoral evidence of EVERY (to our knowledge) pre-Crisis appearance of the enigmatic Monitor! -- Visit us on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/CosmicTMillHistory and on Twitter @CosmicTMill -- Subscribe to the show on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, iHeartRadio, Spotify, YouTube... wherever's most convenient! Miracleman was originally just a substitute for Captain Marvel created by Mick Anglo for British audiences of the 1950's, but in 1982 Alan Moore re-invented the character for modern audiences. Originally known as Marvelman, Miracleman went from a second rate impostor to one of the greatest examples of modern comic book heroes in just 16 issues, before being handed off to the wonderful Neil Gaiman for a second re-invention that is reaching a whole new generation of comic readers via Marvel reprints (and hopefully some forthcoming new stories). According to the Elders, it's time to celebrate 75 years of Captain Marvel! Yes, young Billy Batson has been screaming "Shazam!" and fighting crime (and Superman's lawyers) as Captain Marvel since 1940. This week we'll look at the comic books, the movie serials, the cartoons, and of course, the live action Saturday morning TV series from Filmation (from which we learned that driving around in a Winnebago looking for troubled teens is not NECESSARILY creepy). Along the way we'll meet Mary Marvel (Billy's surprise twin sister!), Captain Marvel Junior (who was a huge influence on Elvis Presley, believe it or not), a talking tiger, an evil worm, and maybe even Hoppy the Marvel Bunny. We'll learn about the weird 1960s version of Captain Marvel, who could separate his head and limbs from his torso. (Then again, everyone could probably do that, at least once.) We'll learn how to stop your city from being buried in strawberry Jell-O. (Folks, it's not a question of if it will happen, but when.) And we'll learn why we should get totally liquored up for the Shazam movie. (Just don't tell those pesky Elders.) Also: National Whatever Day, Super Megafest, and the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival. That should keep you busy until the evil Dr. Sivana destroys us all.
