Interview begins @ 6:04 In this episode, comedian Pete Holmes meets theologian and former AC/DC road manager, Barry Taylor, for the first time, despite Pete having referenced a profound quote from Barry in his work for nearly a decade. The conversation kicks off with Pete diving into Barry's storied history with rock & roll, setting the stage for a deeper exploration into how both comedy and rock music act as catalysts for transformation, challenging societal norms and speaking truth to power during critical times. Together, they discuss the delicate dance between the sacred and the profane and how art masterfully navigates the lines of culture, taboo, transgression, and spirituality. As the digital age reshapes our world, creating divisions and highlighting polarization, Barry points out the unique role of the arts in cutting through these dynamics. Throughout the episode, the influence of Richard Rohr is evident, as all participants share their personal connections to his teachings and reflect on spiritual practice as an essential tool to combat the ego's pull. Beth's comedy journey began in Chicago, where she was named “Best Stand-up Comedian in Chicago” by The Chicago Reader in 2010. Soon after she was a “New Face” in Montreal's Just for Laughs Festival. Within her first year in L.A., Beth made her late night TV debut on Conan and released her debut album "Sweet Beth" via Rooftop Records. Beth soon after appeared on comedy programs such as @midnight, Chelsea Lately, The Pete Holmes Show, and Jimmy Kimmel Live. That year Beth filmed her Comedy Central “The Half Hour” stand-up special in Boston, and Vulture named it one of the "Best Stand-up Specials of 2015." In conjunction with her Comedy Central special, Stelling released her second comedy album "Simply the Beth." The Interrobang and Splitsider named it one of the top ten albums of 2015. Her second half hour stand-up special was filmed in L.A and is now streaming on Netflix as part of The Standups series (Episode 5 of season 1). Beth's first hour stand-up special Girl Daddy was produced by Conan O'Brien and Team Coco, and dropped August 20th 2020 on HBO Max. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/taquita-love/support

Ever wanted to know who Rick’s female comedy counterpart is? Well, she’s on the balcony today! It's phenomenal comedian, Beth Stelling. Days before releasing her hour-long special on HBO Max, “Girl Daddy”, she climbed over to the balcony to chat with Rick about all comedy and business. They naturally slip into some mustache bits and we get to know Beth and her process from filming her first special. Rick reveals his female body hair gripe and Beth details her 4 comedy-career rules, none of which she still keeps. The two discuss their issues with repeating jokes and why it’s been a struggle for them both. Is their struggle of needing to continuously write in fact part of their... "genius?" Beth battles feelings about self promotion whilst being extremely introspective. She talks about performing on the road with Sarah Silverman and gives her take on Bill Burr’s story about being groped by a female comedian, and the double standards of that reversed behavior being common place for a female comedian. It's a tit-slapping good time, goblins! BE SURE TO CHECK OUT BETH'S SPECIAL, "GIRL DADDY" ON HBO MAX THIS WEEK -- on AUGUST 20TH!! Today's episode is a little different from our usual episode as it's a re-release of an old 2014 episode with comedian, Pete Holmes.  Normally I wouldn't be a fan of re-releasing an old episode. But with some of the new changes going on with the podcast, going forward I am only going to be keeping the most recent 50 episodes available for download. This chat with Pete was a great talk and he gave some great advice in the episode that I didn't want new listeners to miss out on. I clearly had no idea what I was doing on this episode and the podcast has come a long way, but Pete's advice, lessons learned in comedy, and chat about Late Night TV is worth the listen.  Pete originally came on the podcast in 2014 as Episode 15 to promote his TBS late night show, "The Pete Holmes Show".  Of course since this episode Pete has gone on to make the incredible HBO series "Crashing", and recently released his book, "Comedy Sex God". Pete is also the host of the long running comedy podcast, "You Made It Weird", and has several comedy specials available through HBO and Comedy Central. Hopefully we will have Pete back on the podcast in a future episode.  Before we get to Pete, I also talked about 31 Days of Horror that started TODAY and some of the locations I'll be going to this month. I'm excited to be doing 31 Days of Horror again and I can't wait for you guys to see the new 1 minute videos.  Enjoy this re-release! All-new episode next week.

Our string of amazing guests continues with Pete Holmes!!!!  Pete is most notable for the Pete Holmes Show that followed Conan on TBS and was sadly cancelled recently, but he is still touring the country selling out theaters and clubs around the world. We were lucky enough to have Pete call into the Comedy, Food, Sports Podcast to talk about making peace with the cancellation, working on his new hour special, what's next for him and what people can expect from him this weekend at Helium Comedy Club here in Philly (two shows Friday & Saturday). The rest of the episode is filled with Shelton's QB hatred, randomness and more randomness.  Be sure to check out Pete this weekend at Helium and stayed tuned for what we have planned at the Philly Podfest in a couple of weeks. Also, Jay and Shelton sat in with the Black Tribbles to talk about the do's and don'ts of podcasting.  Search iTunes or Stitcher for Black Tribbles to check it out.

DeRosa also mistakenly trashes the band Poison and Machi defiantly jumps to their defense. This is a great talk on comedy, comedy philosophies and the current state of the scene. Susan Messing is an improv deity, and she was nice enough to come on the show and tackle some subjects she cannot stop reading about fueled by anger and curiosity. We focus more on the Scientology side of things than anything else, but the whole thing is fascinating and hilarious just like Susan. She's a big advocate of practicing what you preach when it comes to being improv teacher, so it makes a lot of sense that her frustrations with the topic lie mostly with misinformation and mistreatment of followers. Look forward to a couple of great cameos from Michael McCarthy, Susan's husband, to whom she got engaged while I was in her class at Annoyance. I'm pretty sure I said "bullshit" when she told us she got engaged since the last class. Don't call bullshit on Susan Messing, friends.  Notes: Susan's TEDx talk on Braving the Unknown Tony Ortega's piece in the Village Voice on "The Hole" as well as a comprehensive What is Scientology? article The 1991 Time Magazine cover story The Thriving Cult of Greed and Power Mark Headley's Blown for Good Leah Remini's departure from the church The death of Lisa McPherson Dan Telfer's Best Dinosaur bit on The Pete Holmes Show
