Over the past few years, we've ALL noticed just how important mental health is. In today's episode of the Be Better podcast, our host Donald Kelly goes over 5 different ways YOU can improve your mental health going into 2023. The 80/20 Rule The 80/20 rule is a simple, but a POWERFUL rule to keep in mind and follow. The rule states: 80 percent of your success, whether that be income or something else, comes from only 20 percent of your effort. What this means for YOU as a seller is: Focus on that 20 percent. Whether that be networking, cold calls, finalizing deals, whatever it is, really HONE In on that in this new year. Maximize that 20 percent of your effort and you'll maximize your profits. Exercise You've undoubtedly heard how important exercise is for your physical health. But it's also VITAL for mental health. Working out improves your mood, increases self-confidence, and releases dopamine, among COUNTLESS other mental benefits. You don't have to do insane exercises to reap the benefits of physical activity. Something as simple as walking or doing a few push-ups is enough to start boosting your mood. Go lift some weights, go for a walk or run, ride a bike, or just do SOMETHING to elevate your heart rate. You'll thank yourself. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others One of the QUICKEST ways to drain your mental health is to endlessly compare yourself to others and what they post on social media. You have to keep in mind that what you see on social media isn't the COMPLETE story. Top-level influencers romanticize their lives to an insane degree, but they don't live like that 24/7. Think again of the 80/20 rule. You're not seeing the full picture. You also have to remember: EVERYONE has a different journey in life. We're all at different points in that journey. Why compare yourself to the CEO of some company who's been in the market for 5 years, when you just began yours? Schedule Me Time Another VITAL aspect of maintaining your mental health is ensuring you have proper breaks. Schedule some time within your day to just relax and focus on what you want to focus on. It could be something as simple as lying on the ground in the dark or going out for a walk. Do something to take yourself away from work and decompress. Have Someone to Talk to The final tip Donald has is to make SURE you have someone to talk to about your problems. Facing challenges and issues alone is never healthy and can make those issues worse. Whether it's a therapist, counselor, or just someone you trust, make sure you can talk to someone. It takes the edge off of situations and prevents you from just bottling up your emotions. Today's podcast is all about helping you to support yourself through the holidays and events in your life, while making sure you're able to take good care of YOU through them. This way you can feel good and enjoy these events and also recover easily when they are stressful. Studies show and we know from life experience that when we have these additional experiences or extras in our schedule (whether it's the holidays or events in your life like a wedding planning or having a baby or even planning a memorial in your family) we experience stress. This is because these are activities on top of everything else that's happening in our lives. We still must keep up with our everyday jobs, our careers, running our homes, paying our bills, etc. Even though holidays are something we look forward to and we enjoy as part of taking a break and spending time with our loved ones it's sometimes hard to enjoy them when we are feeling stressed. So how do we navigate through this? Well, we have to implement SelfC.A.R.E. (C for clean eating, A for adequate sleep, R for recovery activities and E for exercise). First, we need to sit down to think about our schedules and write them down. This way we will have a clear idea of what we are spending our time on every day. Then we can jot down our priorities list. We then can re-organize our time to make sure we are putting ourselves high on that list. If we are not taking good care of ourselves we are not going to be able to take care of anybody else. Here is where I like to use my SelfC.A.R.E. Notebook, where I keep track and write down the important things I wish to accomplish every day. Then follow up, look at what worked and what didn't, make some tweaks and then do it slightly different the next day. If you would like to start doing this you can get your own SelfC.A.R.E. notebook here: (https://doctordoni.com/product/drdoni-notebook/) Prioritizing ourselves takes time and practice. That's why I want to help you with some tips, so you are able to do this. In my book Master Your Stress Reset Your Health I give you examples of a SelfC.A.R.E. routine, from the minute you wake up. Hour by hour I show you what you can do to take good care of yourself every day. If you would like to find out more you can get a copy here: (https://doctordoni.com/master-your-stress/). - So how can we start implementing SelfC.A.R.E. in our lives? Let's talk through some examples. C for Clean Eating: This is different for everybody as everyone may have a different starting point. For example, is there too much sugar in your diet? Well, this is creating a blood sugar rollercoaster in your system. If this is the case, I encourage you to start reading the labels of what you eat and drink and look for sugar on them and try to start cutting down on these foods. I also like to focus on protein in my meals. Whenever you are eating something ask yourself where is the protein? You can also add some healthy carbs and fats like vegetables and nuts to give you the energy you need throughout the day. What I also like to do is if I have an event or a party, I eat a healthy small meal before going out so I know I am fed and then I will not be eating whatever there is available at the event. For some next steps you can check out my 7 day SelfC.A.R.E. Stress Reset here: (https://doctordoni.com/product/the-stress-reset/), where I give you more tips and show you how to integrate them into your life in a way that's doable and doesn't stress you more. My goal is always to support you through stress, not add more to your life. A for Adequate Sleep: We have to start by setting a time to go to bed every day and stick with it. We also need to think about our pre-bedtime routine like do the dishes, brush our teeth, do some meditation or journaling, etc. We have to figure out what are the things we need to do to tell our nervous system and our bodies it's time to wind down, relax and go to sleep so we can get at least 7.5 hours of quality sleep. If you're not sleeping well, you can find some resources here: (https://doctordoni.com/specialties/sleep-insomnia/) R for Recovery Activities: Sometimes when we are visiting family or loved ones, we lose track of our SelfC.A.R.E. routine. Here I encourage you to set out your schedule and even communicate it with your family and friends. For example, say “I would like to spend some time outside today and this is what I'm thinking about the timing, would you like to join me for a 20 min walk?” We all know how important it is for our health to spend time in nature and get some sunlight. This is really good for our circadian rhythm and resetting our stress response system. Also, things like journaling, meditation, mindfulness, singing, listening to music, playing instruments are all things that we can do in the company of others and that are good for reducing stress. E for Exercise: You can just start with just 5 minutes a day if you don't exercise at all. If you have an event later in the day you can schedule your exercise routine early in the morning so you get it done and out of the way. It could be any kind of physical activity like going for a walk, yoga, dancing, breathing, core strengthening, strength training or a short HIIT workout. The important thing is it needs to be something you like. In my book I show you how to tailor your exercise based on your stress type. If you don't know your stress type yet you can do my Stress Type Quiz here: (https://doctordoni.com/quiz/stress-quiz/) It will give you so much information on how to master your specific kind of stress and the supplements you need to take. It will also show you how to implement SelfC.A.R.E. based on your unique type of stress. - So, if you're getting ready to go to a holiday event I would recommend: Make sure to get that clean eating before heading out. Take a stress management supplement like GABA (https://doctordoni.com/product/gaba-support-60-capsules/) a natural non drowsy, non-addictive supplement based on nutrients that help buffer the stress. Take an immune support supplement (https://doctordoni.com/product/dr-doni-s-immune-support-60-capsules/) to avoid getting sick. If you do get a cold after the holidays you can find my cold and flu survival guide here: (https://doctordoni.com/ddpp/cold-flu-guide/). It will help you bounce back to your normal life as quickly as possible. If you choose to drink alcohol, make sure you drink plenty of water and take some NAC supplements to help you metabolize alcohol better. Also, probiotics have been shown to help counteract the effects of alcohol. You can find both here: (https://doctordoni.com/product/nac-sap-90-capsules/) (https://doctordoni.com/product/dr-doni-s-probiotic-support-60-vegetarian-capsules/) I am so glad you joined me here, please let me know if there is something you would like me to cover in more depth and make sure you join my newsletter and subscribe to the podcast. Louisa Nicola is a neurophysiologist, brain coach to elite athletes, and Founder of Neuro Athletics, a full-service neuroscience diagnostic testing company. Back in episode #436, Louisa Nicola gave us an introduction to the brain and nervous system, setting the foundation for us to understand how neuroscience can help us get more out of life. This week, Louisa is back to dive deeper into the science behind brain performance. In this discussion, Chase and Louisa talk about the three domains of peak brain performance: nutrition, physical exercise, and neurophysiology. Louisa breaks down how to utilize nutrients, exercise, and sleep, so you can better optimize your brain health. The pair also talk about keeping the blood-brain barrier strong, the benefits of using exogenous ketones, and why you need to be more mindful of maintaining your dopamine levels. Plus… Can our brain cells regenerate or are the connections just getting stronger? Stick around until the end to hear Louisa's shocking answer! Follow Louisa Nicola @louisanicola_ Learn more about NeuroAthletics Follow Chase on Instagram @chase_chewning Follow him on Twitter @chasechewning Key Highlights Sleep: “Sleep is probably the most underrated high performance tool we have,” Louisa says. If you're an athlete who doesn't get enough quality sleep, it affects almost every aspect of your performance and increases risk for injury. Louisa goes on to describe the impacts of sleep on brain health, brain disorders, and brain aging. Nutrition: “When it comes to the brain, there are certain things that the brain favors, especially as it relates to nutrition and supplementation,” Louisa says. Listen in to learn how stress, inflammation, and supplementation of key nutrients, like EPA and DHA, can play a role in longevity and cognitive performance. Plus, Louisa explains the benefits of going on a high fat diet immediately after a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or concussion). Hydration is a key indicator of brain functioning. If we are 2% dehydrated, we can have a decrease in our cognitive performance by 30%. Exercise: “You can grow the gray matter of your brain by physical activity alone,” Louisa says. She then recaps various research studies that show the relationship between exercise, particularly resistance training, and cognitive performance as well as how exercise can prevent Alzheimer's disease. Your brain loves quality time with other humans, loving relationships, social interactions, and of course, self-love. How will you know these practices are actually improving your brain health? Today's episode is all about how to be happy. We spend so much time focusing on comparison, approval, and not giving ourselves compassion. In this episode, I share my top tips for focusing on self-worth and happiness.
*** New Episode of The Pursuit of Excellence *** In this episode, Dave talks about happy moments and what he believes is the answer to achieving moments of happiness more frequently. Dave has a system that he follows as the foundation to achieve this. Ultimately it comes down to, 1. Sleep - We could spend an entire episode on sleep alone, but sleep is extremely important for your health and well-being. Make it a priority to get 7-8 hours a sleep - No exceptions! 2. Nutrition - For the vast majority of listeners you all know what you should and shouldn't be putting in your mouth. Eat more vegetables, consume more protein and more fruit, you know the drill. 3. Exercise - You need to find a way to elevate your heart rate for 150 minutes a week MINIMUM. This doesn't have to be in a gym, you just need to find a way to elevate your heart rate. 4. Vulnerability - Be vulnerable, try new things! Meet new people! We know this is hard to do during covid, but there are ways to do it safely. "Look after yourself, put yourself in vulnerable positions, try new things and you will find new moments of happiness and that is the pursuit of excellence. The pursuit of excellence is finding as many moments of happiness as you can." - Dave

For this story, Liam Bartlett has travelled to Hong Kong and Thailand to find out the likely cause of the disease, as well as the latest ongoing efforts to combat it. At all times he and his crew have followed medical advice and undertaken strict protocols to limit their exposure to potential danger.

Episode 013 – Bringing the Experience of YOU at Trade Shows! Special Interview with Robin Sacks and Angie Pohlman of GroundedInClarity.com It’s more than just experiencing your company – the key is the experience of you. · Are you more than just the brochures and stuff in your booth? · People buy from people – and they need to experience who you are. Robin’s favorite quote from Maya Angelou – “People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel.” Exercise – You and your team show up, but none of your stuff arrived. The only thing in your booth space is YOU. What do you do? If the boxes with your stuff didn’t show up, could you do what you needed to do? It’s about having the confidence to say to yourself, “I know my stuff. I know what I need to know about my company. I am going to embrace this situation, have fun, meet some people, and make them feel good that they actually stopped by this empty booth!” It’s easy for us to lean on our “stuff” as a crutch and fall back on old habits of just shoving a business card and literature into someone’s hands instead of starting a meaningful conversation. Move beyond transactional goals (# of leads, # of badges scanned, etc.) and toward meaningful conversations. When you do this, a magical thing happens. You don’t have to go looking for people as much – they will start looking for you! Whether your stuff shows up or not, your approach should be the same. Start with the thought of engaging with people and getting to conversations and relationship building. When figuring out what you and your staff should say, think about it from the viewpoint of the attendees. When you are an attendee, what draws you in? What makes you want to visit a booth and really dig into their offerings? · What makes you smile? What makes you feel good? And what makes you want to turn and run? · Don’t push your stuff on them. You want them wanting to take your brochures and business card because they enjoyed their experience with you. · This starts to talk about your Personal Brand Exercise – Three Little Words · First – describe yourself using only three words. · Next - Ask people who know you – If you had to describe me in only three words, what would those words be? · Many times something amazing happens because often people will use words that we would never use to describe ourselves. · There are one or two qualities we have which others see and value, but we don’t value them in ourselves. Often times we will even hide these qualities. · These words and qualities are your Super Powers! o If you are not bringing those Super Powers out all the time, you are probably missing out on opportunities on being authentically you TETRIS Game example: · The goal of TETRIS is to fit different shaped blocks to create complete rows. Once you complete a row, it disappears. · TETRIS taught me everything I need to know about life… o When you fit in, you disappear! · Your goal at Trade Shows is to NOT look like everyone else and fit in. · One great way of standing apart is to give people an experience, and that starts with YOU. If you are doing smaller or local shows that are just 1 day long and maybe just a few hours, you have a very limited opportunity to grab people’s...

During this holiday, you might be exposed to lots of factors that could trigger illnesses and sicknesses. But you do not have to turn to flu shots or artificial precautions to keep your immune system strong. Yea! Your body already has an inherent ability to regulate and adapt to the physical and chemical changes that we face every day. All you need is to support your immune system with some natural measures- and that’s the essence of Chiropractic. At our Chiropractic office in Elizabeth City, NC, we have guided a lot of our patients to try simple natural methods to supercharge their immune system. I also want to help you stick to the natural and safer way. Without much ado, check out the natural tips to supercharge your immune system below: 1. Eat a Balanced Diet Your body needs the right amount of nutrients to combat diseases, common cold, flu, and allergies, which are common during this holiday season. Therefore you need to stick to eating a balanced diet with an adequate amount of protein, carbohydrate, and healthy fats. Hippocrates once said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” You don’t have to rely on over-the-counter drugs to boost your immune system. Just stick to a diet rich in whole foods and fiber; your immune system will thank you for the charge. 2. Exercise You can supercharge your immune system tremendously by exercising at least thirty minutes a day for five days every week. More so, you’ll enjoy a better night’s sleep and keep cold at bay by exercising regularly during this holiday season. Remember, you don’t necessarily have to work out outdoors. You can use a nearby gym or do at-home workouts. 3. Get Plenty of Rest Your body needs some time to rejuvenate after helping you accomplish many tasks, digest your food, and do your daily job. So, don’t make the mistake of stressing yourself or sleeping less. Stress has a chronic effect on the immune system and may increase your vulnerability to illness. The best way to help your cells repair themselves and regenerate is to get a good amount of sleep- which is why it is recommended to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night. Some people ask, “Dr. Jason, do I really need to sleep for up to 7 hours?” My response as an experienced chiropractor has always been, “Only if you want to keep your immune system strong.” More so, getting adequate sleep helps your body produce hormones such as serotonin, melatonin, prolactin, and growth hormones- all of which helps to keep your body functioning properly. 4. Drink Plenty of Water You need water to help your body perform many necessary functions like providing oxygen to your blood, clearing of toxins out of the body, circulating nutrients and white blood cells to your body tissue, and lots more. That’s why doctors recommend drinking at least eight glasses of water daily. So, if you’ve not been taking enough water, you can start this holiday to help supercharge the immune system and keep your body hydrated to perform basic functions optimally. 5. Get Plenty of Vitamin C Vitamin C helps with a lot of functions like preventing cold and allergies and helping your body to repair and regenerate tissues. More so, Vitamin C acts as a natural antioxidant, supporting a healthy immune system. You can get plenty of vitamin C from oranges, red and green peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, and red cabbage. 6. Eat Foods Rich in Zinc Zinc is an essential mineral for restoring and repairing cells, which keeps the immune system in good condition. Some foods like Brussels sprouts, legumes, green beans, berries, corn, and dates contain a fair amount of zinc per serving. Besides, the added fiber helps the digestive system. Also, zinc helps to block viruses from gaining full access to your cells. So ensure you eat foods rich in zinc this holiday season to supercharge your immune system to combat diseases, cold, and flu, and allergies. If you really want to enjoy your holidays, ensure you watch what you eat and drink. And don’t forget to exercise and get plenty of rest. Avoid using any medication or traditional treatment measure to boost your immune system to avoid the numerous side effects attached. Also, ensure you keep good hygiene. You can consult your Chiropractor for more tips to supercharge your immune system.
Phoebe and Eleni created a template for their Rooting Down, Expanding Out online course by accessing and translating symbols. They discuss symbols, how they appear to us and how to work with them. Length: 21:24 Notes Symbols appear to us as portals, vortices, sacred geometry, emitting light and a vibration. Phoebe and Eleni discuss their process of connecting with symbols to discover the template for their joint course. This process included: collaborating to create a symbol that held the energy of the course; connecting to the course’s symbol in a number of ways (including journeying into it; physically stepping into the symbol and embodying it). Symbols evolve and change like a living organism in this and other dimensions as different people relate with it and how they relate with it. When you intentionally sit with a personal symbol you may begin to feel the multidimensionality of life. Symbols may be or act as a hologram. Our dreams are symbols. When we dream we are astral traveling; we’re connecting to different dimensions to bring symbolic information into our bodies and consciousness to better understand who we are. Exercise: You’re invited to take 5 to 10 minutes to sit quietly with paper and pen with the intention to get clarity about something you want to birth. Sit feeling the desire to birth something or ask a question. Put marks or doodle on the paper. Doodling allows us to bypass the mind to get information from the core. Either post your paper on the wall and observe it daily or add to it daily. Remember connect the dots? When you’re finished you can connect the doodles to see what you’ve created from a different perspective. Links and References Rooting Down, Expanding Out online course details. Here’s Sandra Ingerman’s definition of a journey: “The shamanic journey is the art of using rhythm and intention to enter an altered state of consciousness in order to connect with the spiritual dimension of reality.” Tune in every Wednesday to catch another episode. Have you noticed any symbols showing up in your daily life? Sometimes they appear as synchronicities or repeating signs. Do you doodle? Today, in Episode #16, I want to talk about the five ways you can boost your metabolism. Many of us are struggling with the self-diagnosed “slow metabolism.” You may say to yourself: "My metabolism is getting slower. I keep gaining weight, especially around the belly and my motivation and energy are at an all-time low. I guess I'm getting older and that's just the way it is." Does that sound familiar? But we can change low energy, lack of motivation, and for sure, get rid of that stubborn belly fat. In fact, if you're willing to change a few habits, you can even turn back the clock and build a leaner, healthier body than you've ever had before. Let me show you how you can boost your metabolism today by changing a few habits. I also have a free downloadable cheat sheet for you. My freebie will help guide you through simple daily strategies to boost your metabolism. I will put a link in the show notes so you can get your hands on it. Are you ready to start? What is a metabolism and what does it do? Metabolism is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. During this very complicated biochemical process, calories in food and drink are combined with oxygen to release the energy your body needs to function. Although your metabolism influences your body's basic needs or your body's primary energy needs, how much you eat and drink along with how much you exercise will determine, ultimately, your weight and your energy levels. There are 4 factors that determine your individual basal metabolism (the number of calories your body burns just to function). Body size and composition Higher weight people burn more calories, but people with a higher muscle composition will also burn more calories, even at rest. Your sex Men typically store less fat, and more muscle than women do at the same age and weight. This means that men usually burn more calories than women. Your age As you age, you tend to decrease the amount of muscle in your body and increase the amount of fat. This slows down the number of calories you burn. Activity level Physically inactive people can lose 3-5% of their muscle mass each decade after the age of 30. Just not fair, right? After the age of 50, I started noticing that it was so much harder to keep myself in shape and I noticed that I had to work so much harder and be more committed. I couldn’t skip exercising, and drink or eat whatever I wanted. The weight started to creep up. My muscles looked softer and more flabby, and I had to rethink my strategies, saying, "All right. I need to do something different. My metabolism works against me, and I need to get in the game and change things: change the way I eat, change the way I exercise." And I have, just like everybody else, struggled with this. But I've gotten a good handle on how this whole metabolism thing works and how I can boost it, and that's what I want to share with you today. But, you know what? The big question always remains: "How do I increase my metabolism, so I don't gain weight and feel energized?" So let's get to it. The five simple steps to boost your metabolism that nobody talks about: #1 - Eat more protein Protein is essential when trying to lose weight and fat, and here is why. Protein helps you keep that all-important lean muscle mass. Protein significantly increases fullness, which means you feel fuller despite eating less, and eating more protein often causes people to eat less overall. So the question now becomes, "How do you calculate all of this?" Maintain your total calorie intake, but change your macronutrients. In my Seven Days to Ignite Your Spark Planner, I talk extensively about this process. So for today, what we want to do is increase protein to 30%, drop your carbs to 40%, reduce fat to 30%. Again, you can dial this in using “myFitnessPal” or another calorie and macro-tracking app. Now, what does the amount look like? For most active women, if you look at the palm of your hand and you say, "Okay, I can eat four to six palm sizes a day." That's how big a serving you can have of good sources of protein (such as fish, lean meats, beans, tofu, chicken, or whey protein). I will also put a link to my favorite protein shake. I just love it. And if I'm on the run and I need to get protein in, my protein shake is the way to go for me. So I'll put a link for you in the show notes. #2 - Skip processed carbs Eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables and healthy fats instead. Think of beautiful, colorful vegetables loaded with vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. Water and fiber (also in our fruits and vegetables) help us fill up during meals, stay full between meals, and help you recover faster from your workouts. Try to eat 4-6 fist-sized servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Then pick from all the fruits you want such as berries, bananas, pineapples, strawberries, and pick any vegetables such as red peppers, tomatoes, spinach, broccoli, mushrooms. And those are just the beginning! When you’re picking your carbohydrates, think of high quality, whole carbs. Again, 4-6 handfuls of quality carbs such as whole grains, potatoes, oatmeal, quinoa, squash, lentils. Finally, take into account your fats. Instead of 4-6 handfuls, we’re going to eat 4-6 thumb sizes worth. Think of eating avocados, olive oil, nuts, and seeds. Now, for our carbs, we look at the handful. So cup your hand in front of you. Use four to six handfuls of quality carbs. None of that processed stuff. So we're looking into whole grains, potatoes, white and sweet potatoes, oatmeal, quinoa, squash, lentils. So again, a beautiful, wide variety of grains and carbs for us. #3 - Exercise You need a mix of strength training and cardiovascular fitness. A combination will decrease your stress and lower your cortisol levels; a hormone responsible for weight gain, especially around the belly. Strength training helps you maintain and eventually gain muscle mass. And, as we heard before, it burns more calories, even at rest. That's a winner right there. So what counts as strength training? Lifting weights, using stretchy bands, Pilates. You may also want to check out my YouTube channel, Pursue Your Spark, and check out the 3 IN 3 = Fun series. I posted a link in the show notes so you can check out the little video series I started to help you get an idea of what kind of exercises you could do to boost your metabolism. Cardiovascular training like running, biking, and fast walking, all improve your heart health. The sky's the limit when it comes to cardiovascular training. You want to plan for about one hour a day of exercise. And remember, it doesn't always have to be hard and all out, but consistency is the key. One hour a day every day with consistent strength training and cardiovascular training, you will see the difference. #4 - Increase your N.E.A.T. NEAT is Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. This is the energy expended for everything we do that is not sleeping, eating, or a sports-like activity. So what does it mean? These are activities like walking from your car to the office, performing yard work, or standing. Increasing your NEAT is easy - try using a standup desk, park your car further away, or walk to the park instead of driving. Think about what other things you can do that just a little bit increase your metabolism. #5 - Sleep Sleep is as important as nutrition and exercise when it comes to metabolism. Try to get 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. Some people make us believe that less is better. Do not believe them. It is not true that you become more productive and more energized if you sleep less. In my podcast #12 “How Do I Get More Sleep and Energy?” I share sleep strategies that work. So go check it out! So there you have it. These are the 5 simple steps to boost your metabolism. I know this can sound like a lot, but start with one item on the list and work on that habit until you feel comfortable with it. New things are always challenging, and it takes time to master them. But the truth is, doing things you love makes you weak. For me, I’m obsessed with Yelp. Every day, I spend a good 30 minutes scrolling through the “hot and new” restaurants that I want to try out — similar to how people on Tinder swipe through a list of candidates, hoping to find the ‘one.’ Any restaurant I bookmark, I end up eating there within that week.I just love the feeling of being the first to try out brand new restaurants and expand my taste buds (as many of you would too). But then this created a bigger dent in my wallet, a very uncomfortable feeling for someone struggling to make ends meet. And because I had one extra thing to worry about, that meant one less task I couldn’t bring myself to finish at work.Takeaway: The things you love doing can bring you instant gratification and make life worth living for. But in the long run, it may end up hurting you, especially if you go overboard.Eating fried foods. Smoking. Online shopping. Drinking booze. Playing computer or video games. Netflix binge-watching. Gambling. Sleeping in.It’s not until long before we become weak in our ability to control our temptations. The thing is, when we get too comfortable with our lives, we no longer have that fiery drive to be better.Which is why I honestly respect those who tell others to do things they hate. Because what truly makes us better, smarter, and stronger is simply building discipline — for both our bodies and our mind.Exercise: You look good. You feel good. There’s less problems you deal with when you become old.Eat vegetables: Those fibrous goodies you pushed to the side of your bowl, well, that’s the secret to slimming down and living longer.Go to school: All you need is a college degree that tells companies that you’re worth paying for. Plus, you get the opportunity to meet very smart people, who you never know might become the next Steve Jobs.Clean: Little would you know, cleaning is a huge stress reliever and can reduce depression. Not to mention, studies show that productivity shoots up when there’s fewer distractions in the room.Take medicine: It’s not tasty, but the sooner you take it, the sooner you can taste. Wake up early: One of the habits successful people do, and something you should do too. Because when you wake up early, you train your brain to stay on top of things.Write: Writing helps clears your mind like how yoga rejuvenates your body. It helps you focus better while talking, working, and thinking.Argue: If possible, we would avoid any argument. But actually, arguing helps us make better comebacks and expand our logic for reasoning. More importantly, it brings out our real voice.Work: How else are you going to pay the bills and live your dream if you don’t work?Words of AdviceYou might shut your mind to what I’m suggesting here, but let me tell you this. If you always avoid what you hate, you can never get better. And it’s not until long before everyone else transforms into someone you respect (more than yourself). So do yourself a favor and do the things you’ve always been avoiding that is good for you.In the beginning, you may feel stupid while learning a new skill or frustrated while sacrificing current pleasure for a future payoff, but when you make the choice to go through the pain early, you get to enjoy the benefit of delight later on.Be persistent. Be patient. Push your limits.Because once you’ve reached your greatest pain, it becomes your greatest strength. That’s when you’ll realize how much potential you have to be better, and that’s when you’ll look back at your old self and love yourself even more today.
How do you hold a vision for your relationship without being trapped by perfectionism when it doesn’t quite measure up to the ideal? How do you manage time in your relationship so that you have time to nurture and build your connection? What are some practical ways that you can learn to value your and your partner’s uniqueness, and what you each bring to the table? And just why is commitment SO important in your relationship’s development? As a healer, relationship coach, and the host of this show, It’s my goal to provide you with unique, actionable insight for how to do relationships amazingly well. And while most of the guests that you’ll hear on the show make perfect sense if you’re familiar with the relationship space, like Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt in episode 22 or Diana Richardson talking about her version of Tantra, which she calls “Slow Sex”, in episodes 2 and episode 10, there are some other less obvious sources of wisdom that I want you to know about. One of these is an organization called “Strategic Coach” - led by Dan Sullivan - which supports entrepreneurs in innovative, often counter-intuitive ways to grow their businesses and lead lives balanced between work and well - LIFE. The more familiar that I’ve become with their advice for entrepreneurs over the years, the more I saw that you could apply their wisdom not only in the business world, but also in the realm of love and relationships. As it turns out, they do have a program called the “Couples Connection” for people in relationship - but it’s only available to people in the strategic coach program. And today’s guest, Shannon Waller, has not only been part of the Strategic Coach Organization since 1991, she has been instrumental helping them do exactly what we’re talking about - gearing their strategies towards the health and growth of relationships. She’s currently Strategic Coach’s Entrepreneurial Team Strategist, and she has also been part of every single Couple’s Connection workshop since they started running them. I’m so excited to have her here on the show to chat with us about some of these really practical, yet unconventional business strategies - and how you can apply them in your love life. In this conversation, Shannon Waller and I discuss various new ways to approach yourself and your relationship: Continually innovate- Whether you yourself own a business or not, there are some critical tips from successful entrepreneurship that translate well into relationships. For example, there is a need, in business, and in relationships, to continually innovate. Without change and cycles of innovation it is all too easy to get stuck in problems, complacent, or bored- and it isn’t long until minds and hearts start to wander. In order to have the relationships we really want, we must continually work to strengthen the container of the relationship so that it becomes a source of growth, energy, and vibrancy. Without this investment of energy, partners will lose heart connection and may begin to substitute other things, including work, so that they feel less empty. The “GAP”: The “Gap” is a key concept in helping us assess our sense of progress, and consequently our sense of competency. The “Gap” is that space between where we are now, and where our ideal is. We all hold ideals- ideals for our partner, our children, ourselves, the way the world should work, how our week should play out- and on and on. First, learn to distinguish helpful versus harmful ideals. A helpful ideal is one that is inspiring and makes you want to be a better person, it gives you energy and helps you set goals. A harmful ideal is one that is burdening, limiting, and leads to decreased energy, anxiety, and shame. All ideals however, can become burdening and limiting if we are not careful in how we relate to them. Think of ideals like the horizon- a mental construct to describe “where the earth meets the sky”, a definition that helps our brains come to grips with something that we can never actually experience or reach. Ideals are a similarly moving target. They are incredibly powerful and valuable in helping inspire and motivate us, and yet, we often misuse them. When we use our ideals to measure ourselves against, we run into problems. When we measure ourselves against this moving, amorphous, and inherently unattainable ideal, we can feel depressed, get frustrated, and often feel like a failure. There is an alternative! Instead of facing forward towards the future, turn around and take a look back at where you started from. Think of yourself standing on the front of a large boat staring at the looming horizon and wondering how long it will take, and how far you have gone, and now, imagine yourself walking to the stern of the boat and viewing the shore receding further and further away… When we measure ourselves against where we have come from, we gain a sense of progress, and begin to experience satisfaction, optimism, and loads of other great feelings. Going into the “Gap” is inevitable, but we always have a choice on how we measure ourselves and how long we stay stuck in there. STOP and CELEBRATE progress! We all have loads of ideals when it comes to our relationships- expectations for how our partner will act, what they will and won’t say, do, feel, how we will show up.... A lot of relationships get stuck in the Gap. It is important to refocus your attention together on progress that has been achieved. TRY THIS: List out 5 achievements you have experienced together, and celebrate these realizations! This positive focus will change how you feel on an everyday basis in your relationship. Find measurable goals in your relationship- Having ideals helps create a vision for what is possible in our relationships, and sets a direction to work towards. Remember however, to be careful in how you measure your relationship against these ideals. Along with looking backwards in order to move forwards, it is helpful to set measurable goals to track progress. We are all guilty of broad statements such as “I want our relationship to be better”, or something like “I want us to be having more sex”- but these are undefined and can quickly lead to guilt, shame, and/or disappointment. Instead, try to set mini and measurable goals- what can you do on date night? When can you set time aside for intimacy? How much time do you want to spend per week together without phones? Together discuss what is going to invigorate your relationship, and set measurable goals and intentions to follow through on. To help you create these measurable goals, it is helpful to ask yourself and your partner: “How will we know that we are in a better relationship?” This question points towards places that can be measured and tracked, which will then lead to that feeling of ‘better’. Maybe it is time for a new time paradigm: There is an entrepreneurial time system that can be applied to relationships, with great consequences. This system divides your time into 3 different types of days: Free Days: Free days are 24 hours (midnight-midnight) when you turn off, and tune in. You don’t check email, your phone, or do any work related activities. You spend this day rejuvenating and dedicating time to your personal life- you friends, your family, yourself, getting more sleep, getting more grounded…. Make them sacred- whatever this means to you. If you truly plan, protect, and follow through on these free days you will begin to breath again, and it will add oxygen to your relationships! Slipping relationships get solid again as you recenter into yourself. It is important that when planning your calendar, you pick these days FIRST. Buffer Days: This is the time to get your house in order, so to speak. Focus on all the details that are necessary to getting your life and work in order. Clean up your “messes”. The intention of buffer days is to do all that is necessary so that you can protect your free days and your focus days. Focus Days: Focus days are another 24 hours (midnight-midnight) in which you spend 80% of your time being productive and focusing on your money making ventures. These are your performance days. Your show days. Attend fully and without interruption. Network, be creative, use your expertise to solve problems and progress. Be creative in how this can be applied in YOUR relationship. How can you better manage your responsibilities and time so that you can enjoy dedicated and uninterrupted time with yourself and your loved one? Unique Ability- How much time do you spend thinking about ways you can be or get better? It is true that we all have ways we can be, do, feel better, however our assumption in our minds is that if we can always get better, than this must mean we aren’t very good right now. This ends up undercutting our own unique abilities. Our unique abilities are those qualities, skills, and gifts that are uniquely us. It is a combination of what you love to do (what is your passion? What fuels you?) and those things that you have superior skill at (what are you really good at?). This combination gives us an unending sense of that “I’m on fire” energy. Give yourself permission to not be perfect at everything and play to your strengths! We all have strengths and non-strengths, and the majority of our cultural conditioning has been based on finding what we are deficient at, and having a “fix what’s wrong” focus. We get this message that we need to work on our weaknesses, however if you work on your weaknesses for a very long time you get….very strong strong weaknesses! Invite yourself to start learning and discovering your strengths, and strengthening these! To do so, it is important to have some perspective, and humor around the expectation that you are supposed to be good at everything. Needless to say, it is not true, nor is it possible- we all have cards that we can play all the time, and other cards that we simply don’t have in our deck. Think of your life and all your responsibilities, roles, and activities, and now try to begin recategorizing these into the following categories: Competent activities- those activities in which you reach the minimum standard. You are okay at this. Excellent activities- these are the activities in which you have superior skill. Other people give you a lot of feedback on this, but inside you are sometimes bored… Unique ability activities- Then there are a small subset of activities in which you have fun, you have the most learning, and you have the most to contribute. This is hopefully connected to how you make money. It goes with you everywhere, and is core to what brings you fulfillment. These are natural to you, and ELF: easy, lucrative, and fun. Give yourself permission to use this unique ability! Return on energy is profoundly better when we invest in our strengths!! Exercise: You can do this alone, or in tandem with your partner. Take some time to get to know your strengths- either by complete a strengths finder assessment tool (see resource list) or by simply sitting down and making a list of what you are really good at. Assessment tools are helpful in that they identify what motivates you, and what your natural leanings are- without all the self-judgement that comes along with self-evaluating. Now make a full list of all that is required to maintain your life. If you are doing this with a partner- make your lists separately and then match them up. Once this is completed begin to look at what is required compared to what your strengths are. The gaps provide opportunities to become RESOURCEFUL. Prioritize what you enjoy doing, and set up the environment and the resources to do this. For those necessary activities and responsibilities that you are not as inclined towards, get creative- delegate, hire out, barter, etc. This requires that you give yourself permission to not do everything, to be okay with where you are at, and to have a sense of humor. NOTE: The Kolbe profile can be a major catalyst in helping clear out some stuck patterning in your relationship. It helps put language to that amorphous “us” by revealing your uniqueness. Use it to help you and your partner find out how you each problem solve, where you work together, and potential areas of conflict. In effect it helps you see what is happening backstage- all those dynamics that end up influencing how we show up in our lives and in our loves. 4 C’s Growth Formula: Intimacy can be scary. Exposing yourself can be scary. Sharing can be scary. The 4 C’s growth formula helps conceptualize the process of becoming confident BY becoming vulnerable. Intentional growth begins when we make a COMMITMENT. Once you are past the honeymoon stage, and ready to start creating a safe container where you can really experience the full potential for aliveness and growth-- you begin to shift towards learning to sustain an arc of growth and commitment. After you have made the commitment- that YES to someone, you enter into the COURAGE phase. This is when you have made a commitment to something that is bigger than you are, and often to something to which you are not totally prepared for. You throw yourself off a cliff and need to learn how to fly. The only way to get to that more comfortable sense of capability and confidence, you have to go through the courage phase. If someone is only half committed, the courage phase takes a really long time, and in truth you never really quite get there. But when you fully jump in and take the risk of committing, you learn, you innovate, you create, you build relationship muscles, and then you put into place the CAPABILITIES, and these lead to a whole new sense of CONFIDENCE. COMMITMENT ⇢ COURAGE ⇢ CAPABILITY⇢ CONFIDENCE ⇡ ⇠ ⇠ ⇠ ⇠ ⇠ ⇠ ⇠ ⇠ ⇠ ⇠ ⇠ ↵ We all know this cycle- and we go through it often. The more often we go through it the more capabilities we build, and therefore the more confidence we have, which then leads us to being able to make bigger and bolder commitments! You can’t just rest in capability in confidence- this leads to stagnation and stuckness. Instead be willing to make greater commitments as this will give you the determination necessary to enter into the courage phase in which we begin to become the people and the partners we want to be! Be self determining- The world can be challenging and powerful, and often there are many external pressures on our relationships that must be contended with. A strengths based approach is not blind to these, but rather requires a willingness and a strength to look directly at these difficulties. Find constructive language with your partner to share your fears, vulnerabilities, and worries in order to be conscious and intentional together about how you want to approach these challenges. This verbal acknowledgement and navigation does not have to be heavy handed- take the conversation with you on date night! Have fun, and find intimacy, in finding words together that will help you be more self-determining in how you lead your lives and your relationship. Lastly, KNOW THYSELF- Use assessment tools, inventories, strengths finders, conversation, introspection, reflection, creativity, or any other means to help you find your unique abilities and that idiosyncratic YOU. Then, find ways to actually honor who you are so that you can become more fully you. The best relationships involve a dynamic in which what makes one partner come to life, then brings their partner to life. This leads to mutual excitement, passion, and ever evolving growth.
