Do you think that it's inevitable that the function of your brain will decline as you get older? Or, do you believe that there are simple things you can do each day to preserve, protect and enhance it? Today's guest is neurophysiologist and brain health researcher, Louisa Nicola. Louisa is founder of Neuro Athletics, where she works with high-performing individuals to optimise their cognitive function. Nine years ago, Louisa was training to go to the Olympics to represent Australia in the triathlon when she was hit by a car and suffered seemingly insurmountable injuries. Desperate to accelerate her recovery, she integrated brain training into her approach to physical health and made a near-miraculous recovery. Since then, she has helped many elite performers perform better, think faster and live longer by leveraging neuroscience, exercise physiology, sleep science and nutrition. In this conversation, we discuss: How our brain works as an intricate network - with 87 billion neurons making approximately 5000 connections each The latest research about Alzheimer's disease, including why it affects more women than men. Why a combination of regular aerobic exercise, high-intensity training, and resistance sessions can help protect brain function The importance of consistent, quality sleep to support your brain's natural cleaning processes And, how supplements like creatine monohydrate and omega-3 fatty acids can support brain health, alongside the right nutrition. One of the key themes in this conversation is that our daily habits compound over time to either protect or compromise the health of our brains - and, throughout, Louisa shares a variety of practical strategies we can all adopt - suitable for every age and fitness level. Louisa's message is both urgent and hopeful: while our modern lifestyles may be contributing to rising rates of cognitive decline, we have more control over our brain health than we might think. Follow Louisa Nicola @louisanicola_ Follow Chase on Instagram @chase_chewning Follow him on Twitter @chasechewning Key Highlights To optimize your performance at work and consistently operate at your best, you need to think of yourself as an athlete. An athlete bases their life on the tactics of their sport (their job), the technical side, the sports psychology side, nutrition, and strength. “If you base your life on those pillars, the ROI is exponential,” Louisa says. What does neuroscience currently say about the benefits of exercise on brain health? Louisa explains the difference between exercise and physical activity, noting why resistance training is better for the brain than aerobics. She details a study that shows a reversal in mild cognitive impairment (pre-dementia) from just six months of exercise alone. You are in control of your brain health. Lifestyle interventions give you the control over developing/preventing stroke, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer's disease. Start to assess yourself. The #1 thing that is controllable, yet can collapse the capillaries in your brain, is consistent high blood pressure (hypertension), which can decrease brain function. Do you check your blood pressure regularly? Louisa shares why she's so intrigued by vascular health right now and the crucial role your veins play in brain health. That's what high performance is to me, the ability to adapt rapidly so you can achieve your potential. There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” - Dr. Erik Korem "Stress is your brain and body preparing you to do something effortful." Dr. Alex Auerbach “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming, you're a swimmer, if you're driving, you're a driver. If you're leading, you're by definition, a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to decide or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it's your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce "Attention is the currency of performance." - Dr. Peter Haberl “That's what I've discovered in the lives of brilliant, prolific, healthy creatives, is that they have networks of people they leverage in the course of their work. That they learn from, that they were challenged by, that they gave great insight and purview into their own life and work, in such a way that they were able to receive feedback that helped them get better at what they do.” - Todd Henry "Restful and fulfilling sleep enables you to grow, adapt, and thrive. It creates the conditions for adaptation, so you can pursue audacious goals and thrive in uncertainty." - Dr. Erik Korem "Most exercise programs fail, not because the reps and sets are poorly designed, but because the program doesn't adjust for how much stress your body can adapt to that day! That's why Dr. Chris Morris' research and practical application of fluid periodization is the key for unlocking your performance potential." - Dr. Erik KoremSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Louisa Nicola is a neurophysiologist, brain coach to elite athletes, and Founder of Neuro Athletics, a full-service neuroscience diagnostic testing company. Back in episode #436, Louisa Nicola gave us an introduction to the brain and nervous system, setting the foundation for us to understand how neuroscience can help us get more out of life. This week, Louisa is back to dive deeper into the science behind brain performance. In this discussion, Chase and Louisa talk about the three domains of peak brain performance: nutrition, physical exercise, and neurophysiology. Louisa breaks down how to utilize nutrients, exercise, and sleep, so you can better optimize your brain health. The pair also talk about keeping the blood-brain barrier strong, the benefits of using exogenous ketones, and why you need to be more mindful of maintaining your dopamine levels. Plus… Can our brain cells regenerate or are the connections just getting stronger? Stick around until the end to hear Louisa's shocking answer! Follow Louisa Nicola @louisanicola_ Learn more about NeuroAthletics Follow Chase on Instagram @chase_chewning Follow him on Twitter @chasechewning Key Highlights Sleep: “Sleep is probably the most underrated high performance tool we have,” Louisa says. If you're an athlete who doesn't get enough quality sleep, it affects almost every aspect of your performance and increases risk for injury. Louisa goes on to describe the impacts of sleep on brain health, brain disorders, and brain aging. Nutrition: “When it comes to the brain, there are certain things that the brain favors, especially as it relates to nutrition and supplementation,” Louisa says. Listen in to learn how stress, inflammation, and supplementation of key nutrients, like EPA and DHA, can play a role in longevity and cognitive performance. Plus, Louisa explains the benefits of going on a high fat diet immediately after a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or concussion). Hydration is a key indicator of brain functioning. If we are 2% dehydrated, we can have a decrease in our cognitive performance by 30%. Exercise: “You can grow the gray matter of your brain by physical activity alone,” Louisa says. She then recaps various research studies that show the relationship between exercise, particularly resistance training, and cognitive performance as well as how exercise can prevent Alzheimer's disease. Your brain loves quality time with other humans, loving relationships, social interactions, and of course, self-love. How will you know these practices are actually improving your brain health? As active women, we train our strength and our endurance. But we don't clean that barbell, we don't cross that finish line, we literally don't accomplish anything in life without first having the mental ability that comes from our brain. And as we age, our brains become vulnerable to decline. They physically change during the menopause transition, as our hormones fluctuate and taper off. But there is no point in time that we can't take concrete action to build a stronger, better functioning brain, which is where this week's guest, neurophysiologist Louisa Nicola comes in. We talk all about brain health, brain training, and how to maintain your mental acuity for life. Louisa is the founder, head performance advisor, and CEO of Neuro Athletics, a company designed to optimize mental performance and to help educate, train and unlock human performance through science and data. She consults with some of the biggest names in the NBA and MLB and sits on the scientific advisory board for Tonal. Have you ever heard the statement that we only use 10% of our brains? This concept is popular in popular culture and motivational speeches, but there's no scientific data to back it up. The human brain is dynamic and highly complex. The truth is, we use 100% of our brains all the time, even when we're sleeping. Although we can't tap into dormant parts of our brains to unlock our potential, we can optimize our brains and our biology to operate at peak performance. Today's guest is going to show you how. Louisa Nicola is a neurophysiologist and the founder of Neuro Athletics, a company that helps athletes and top investors achieve peak performance by taking a neurological approach to training. On this episode of The Model Health Show, she's sharing the fascinating science behind building an athletic brain. In this interview, we're diving into topics like neurophysiology, gray matter, dopamine, and long-term brain health. Louisa is bringing the data, her unmatched experience in the field of neurophysiology, and actionable steps you can use to achieve peak performance in any area of your life. So listen in, take good notes, and enjoy the show! In this episode you'll discover: What the field of neurophysiology entails. How an EEG is used to measure brain activity. What separates someone like Kobe Bryant from the average athlete. Why Louisa decided to do brain scans on NFL players. What Neuro Athletics is, and the two major industries they serve. The series of events that occur in the brain when you hit a ball. How juggling can grow the gray matter of the brain. Why adding variations to physical activity can train your brain. How the nervous system works. Three major theories about brain aging. What percentage of our brains that we actually use. The importance of sleeping for neuroplasticity. How to set goals that optimize your dopamine response. Why curating your social media feed is important for your brain. How physical activity can starve off Alzheimer's disease. What percentage of patients with Alzheimer's disease have a genetic form. The importance of cycling through sleep stages for brain health. How Ceylon cinnamon can impact insulin levels. The three domains for achieving peak performance. Items mentioned in this episode include: PiqueLife.com/model -- Use code MODEL at checkout for 10% off! This week's guest is neuroscientist + neurophysiologist, Louisa Nicola. If you're interested in discovering the root of human potential + how you can optimize yours from the perspective of Neuroscience, then this is going to be an EPIC one for you. At the young age of 15, Louisa became a competitive swimmer who went on to win her first triathlon at the age of 17. Recognizing her innate gift of athleticism + love for competitive sports, she became immersed in the science behind physical optimization. In 2011, Louisa was tragically hit by a car, forcing her to forfeit her title. Like the resilient woman that she is, she got back up + turned her incredible challenge into her passion + life's work. When her coach profoundly said to her, “if you want to get back on the bike, it's going to be through the brain,” Louisa instantly realized how significant the brain was for human potential + athleticism. Today, she shares her extensive research as the founder of Neuro Athletics + host of one of the top 100 podcasts dedicated to neuroscience, neurology, and longevity, The Neuro Experience (one of my personal favorites). Louisa works with elite-level athletes + sports organizations around the world. She is a trusted source in the world of sport, on learning the ways at which one can turn their BEST into BETTER by leaning into the optimization of brain health + performance. Some of the topics discussed in our talk are: The essential pillars of longevity + healthspan Cognitive aging and the onset of Alzheimer's, how it develops, and how to prevent it. Sleep quality and its importance for ultimate brain health. REM vs. non-REM sleep, the difference, and the responsibility of each. The correlation between neuroinflammation + depression. AND much more Check out Louisa's Instagram @thediamondboss_ for more incredible insights as well as her podcast, The Neuro Experience + her incredibly insightful newsletter. All details are below. Today's guest is Louisa Nicola. She is a trained clinical neuroscientist, the founder of Neuro Athletics and works one on one with professional NBA, MLS and NFL players to enhance peak brain performance. I am not sure which is more inspiring: her wealth of knowledge and expertise or her incredible story. Louisa grew up training competitively as a triathlete in Australia. One day while she was on her bike training for the triathlon world championship, a car struck her leaving her knee ruptured and shattering her dreams of competing. She was told by a doctor that she would never walk again. But that didn't stop her from making a comeback. Louisa ended up crossing paths with a special mentor that taught her the importance of the mind-body connection. This ultimately changed her life and gave her the superpower to not only walk again, but to compete again. We go in depth about this extraordinary accomplishment and how it set the tone for the work she does today as a neuroscientist. Louisa and I have a detailed conversation on managing emotions, fear, stress and the entire nervous system. What you will learn is that the biggest trick to coping with all of these things is optimizing how you sleep. She shares some shocking information on the negative impacts of poor sleep including how it affects your memory, emotions, immune system, and genetics. It can even alter your brain. But don't worry, she also shares practical tips that you can do to improve your sleep as well as some innovative ways to train your mind, thrive under pressure and much more! Topics discussed: Louisa's incredible backstory and how she survived a near death accident How she recovered and was able to compete at triathlon world championship Managing stress, emotions and nervous system Embracing fear Why sleep is so important for physical, mental and emotional health What qualifies as good sleep? The dangers of poor sleep How to optimize and improve sleep Innovative ways to train the mind Connect with Louisa: Website: https://www.neuroathletics.com.au/founder-bio Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thediamondboss_/?hl=en Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/louisanicola/ Connect with Doug: Instagram: www.instagram.com/dougbopst Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dougbopst Website: www.dougbopst.com/ Private Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/690686891674188 More on Earth Echo Foods/Cacao Bliss: www.earthechofoods.com/dougbopst Use Promo code "Doug" at checkout to receive 15% off your order
