Abstract: Jumonji-C (JmjC) ribosomal protein hydroxylases are an ancient class of oxygen- and Fe(II)-dependent oxygenases that spawned the wider JmjC family and Histone Lysine Demethylases (KDMs) in eukaryotes. Myc-induced Antigen (MINA) has been implicated in ribosome biogenesis and was assigned as a nucleolar-localized JmjC histidyl hydroxylase of the large ribosomal subunit protein RPL27A, consistent with reports that it supports cell growth and viability in a variety of tumor cell types. Reported roles in diverse aspects of disease biology may be consistent with additional MINA functions, although the molecular mechanisms involved remain unclear. Here, we describe an extra-nucleolar interaction of MINA with the Hinge domain of the membrane-associated guanylate kinase, MPP6. We show that MINA promotes the expression and membrane localization of MPP6 and that the MINA-MPP6 pathway is required for epithelial tight junction integrity and barrier function. The function of MINA in this novel pathway is suppressed by ribosomal RNA transcription and the nucleolar MINA interactome, which sequesters MINA in the nucleoli of growing cells. The XQR-30 Metal Absorber Catalog: 778 Absorption Systems Spanning 2 < z < 6 5 by Rebecca L. Davies et al. on Wednesday 30 November Intervening metal absorption lines in the spectra of z > 6 quasars are fundamental probes of the ionization state and chemical composition of circumgalactic and intergalactic gas near the end of the reionization epoch. Large absorber samples are required to robustly measure typical absorber properties and to refine models of the synthesis, transport, and ionization of metals in the early Universe. The "Ultimate XSHOOTER legacy survey of quasars at z~5.8-6.6" (XQR-30) has obtained high signal-to-noise spectra of 30 luminous quasars, nearly quadrupling the existing sample of 12 high quality z~6 quasar spectra. We use this unprecedented sample to construct a catalog of 778 systems showing absorption in one or more of MgII (360 systems), FeII (184), CII (46), CIV (479), SiIV (127), and NV (13) which span 2 < z < 6.5. This catalog significantly expands on existing samples of z > 5 absorbers, especially for CIV and SiIV which are important probes of the ionizing photon background at high redshift. The sample is 50% (90%) complete for rest-frame equivalent widths W > 0.03AA (0.09AA). We publicly release the absorber catalog along with completeness statistics and a Python script to compute the absorption search path for different ions and redshift ranges. The mid-infrared molecular inventory towards Orion IRc2 by Sarah Nickerson et al. on Wednesday 30 November We present the first high spectral resolution mid-infrared survey in the Orion BN/KL region, covering 7.2 to 28.3 micron. With SOFIA/EXES we target the enigmatic source Orion IRc2. While this is in the most prolifically studied massive star-forming region, longer wavelengths and molecular emission lines dominated previous spectral surveys. The mid-infrared observations in this work access different components and molecular species in unprecedented detail. We unambiguously identify two new kinematic components, both chemically rich with multiple molecular absorption lines. The "blue clump" has vLSR = -7.1 pm 0.7 km/s and the "red clump" 1.4 pm 0.5 km/s. While the blue and red clumps have similar temperatures and line widths, molecular species in the blue clump have higher column densities. They are both likely linked to pure rotational H2 emission also covered by this survey. This work provides evidence for the scenario that the blue and red clumps are distinct components unrelated to the classic components in the Orion BN/KL region. Comparison to spectroscopic surveys towards other infrared targets in the region show that the blue clump is clearly extended. We analyze, compare, and present in depth findings on the physical conditions of C2H2, 13CCH2, CH4, CS, H2O, HCN, H13CN, HNC, NH3, and SO2 absorption lines and an H2 emission line associated with the blue and red clumps. Multiple gas phases in supernova remnant IC 443: mapping shocked H 2 with VLT KMOS by Yunwei Deng et al. on Tuesday 29 November Supernovae and their remnants provide energetic feedback to the ambient interstellar medium (ISM), which is often distributed in multiple gas phases. Among them, warm molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) often dominates the cooling of the shocked molecular ISM, which has been observed with the H$_2$ emission lines at near-infrared wavelengths. Such studies, however, were either limited in narrow filter imaging or sparsely sampled mid-infrared spectroscopic observations with relatively poor angular resolutions. Here we present near-infrared ($H$- and $K$-band) spectroscopic mosaic observations towards the A, B, C, and G regions of the supernova remnant (SNR) IC 443, with the K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) onboard the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We detected 20 ro-vibrational transitions of H$_2$, one H line (Br$gamma$), and two [Fe II] lines, which dominate broadband images at both $H$- and $K$-band. The spatial distribution of H$_2$ lines at all regions are clumpy on scales from $sim 0.1$ pc down to $sim 0.008$ pc. The fitted excitation temperature of H$_2$ is between 1500 K and 2500 K, indicating warm shocked gas in these regions. The multi-gas-phase comparison shows stratified shock structures in all regions, which explains the co-existence of multiple types of shocks in the same regions. Last, we verify the candidates of young stellar objects previously identified in these regions with our spectroscopic data, and find none of them are associated with young stars. Multiple gas phases in supernova remnant IC 443: mapping shocked H 2 with VLT KMOS by Yunwei Deng et al. on Monday 28 November Supernovae and their remnants provide energetic feedback to the ambient interstellar medium (ISM), which is often distributed in multiple gas phases. Among them, warm molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) often dominates the cooling of the shocked molecular ISM, which has been observed with the H$_2$ emission lines at near-infrared wavelengths. Such studies, however, were either limited in narrow filter imaging or sparsely sampled mid-infrared spectroscopic observations with relatively poor angular resolutions. Here we present near-infrared ($H$- and $K$-band) spectroscopic mosaic observations towards the A, B, C, and G regions of the supernova remnant (SNR) IC 443, with the K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) onboard the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We detected 20 ro-vibrational transitions of H$_2$, one H line (Br$gamma$), and two [Fe II] lines, which dominate broadband images at both $H$- and $K$-band. The spatial distribution of H$_2$ lines at all regions are clumpy on scales from $sim 0.1$ pc down to $sim 0.008$ pc. The fitted excitation temperature of H$_2$ is between 1500 K and 2500 K, indicating warm shocked gas in these regions. The multi-gas-phase comparison shows stratified shock structures in all regions, which explains the co-existence of multiple types of shocks in the same regions. Last, we verify the candidates of young stellar objects previously identified in these regions with our spectroscopic data, and find none of them are associated with young stars. Proper motions for the brightest knots decrease from 350 to 100 km/s with increasing distance from the source. The [Fe II] and Pa$beta$ emission line intensity ratio gives a velocity jump through each knot of 40-50 km/s. We show a new [O I] 63 $rm mu$m spectrum taken with the German REciever for Astronomy at Terahertz frequencies (GREAT) instrument aboard Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), which give a low jet inclination. Proper motions and jump velocities then estimate total flow speed throughout the jet. We model knot positions and speeds with a precessing jet that decelerates within the host molecular cloud. The measurements are matched with a precession period of a few thousand years and half opening angle of 15$rmdeg$. The [Fe II] 1.26 $rm mu$m to 1.64 $rm mu$m line intensity ratio gives the extinction to each knot ranging from 5-30 mag. Relative to $sim$14 mag of extinction through the cloud from C$^{18}$O emission maps, the jet is well embedded at a fractional depth from 1/5 to 4/5, and can interact with the cloud. Our model suggests the jet is locally dissipated over 0.2 pc. This may be because knots sweep through a wide angle, giving the cloud time to fill in cavities opened by the jet. High-resolution cross-correlation spectroscopy allows for the unambiguous detection of molecules/atoms. It has also been used to map both atmospheric dynamics and longitudinal variations in the abundance of species across the morning and evening limbs. We present multiple VLT/ESPRESSO observations of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-121b, from which we constrain relative abundances of various neutral metals consistently across all observations, whilst accounting for the distortion of the exoplanet's signal caused by traditional data processing techniques. We also constrain planetary orbital velocities and $T$-$P$ profiles. We compare our abundance constraints with previous constraints using VLT/UVES transmission spectroscopy of WASP-121b, and find our results to be consistent between observations, and also in agreement with stellar values for species previously detected in the atmosphere of WASP-121b. Our retrieval framework can also be used to identify potential exospheric species, resulting in extended absorption features beyond the transit equivalent Roche limit of WASP-121b ($R_{rm eqRL}$ $sim$ 1.3 $R_{rm p}$). H$alpha$, Fe II, and Ca II were found to extend to high altitudes ($1.54pm0.04$ $R_{rm p}$, $1.17pm0.01$ $R_{rm p}$, and $2.52pm0.34$ $R_{rm p}$, respectively), which are broadly consistent with literature values. A First Look at the Abundance Pattern -- O H, C O, and Ne O -- in z>7 Galaxies with JWST NIRSpec by Karla Z. Arellano-Córdova et al. on Wednesday 12 October We analyze the rest-frame near-UV and optical nebular spectra of three $z > 7$ galaxies from the Early Release Observations taken with the Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). These three high-z galaxies show the detection of several strong-emission nebular lines, including the temperature-sensitive [O III] $lambda$4363 line, allowing us to directly determine the nebular conditions and abundances for O/H, C/O, and Ne/O. We derive O/H abundances and ionization parameters that are generally consistent with other recent analyses. We analyze the mass-metallicity relationship (i.e., slope) and its redshift evolution by comparing between the three z > 7 galaxies and local star-forming galaxies. We also detect the C III] $lambdalambda$1907,1909 emission in a z > 8 galaxy from which we determine the most distant C/O abundance to date. This valuable detection of log(C/O) = $-0.83pm0.38$ provides the first test of C/O redshift evolution out to high-redshift. For neon, we use the high-ionization [Ne III] $lambda$3869 line to measure the first Ne/O abundances at z>7, finding no evolution in this $alpha$-element ratio. We explore the tentative detection of [Fe II] and [Fe III] lines in a z>8 galaxy, which would indicate a rapid build up of metals. The Obscured Nucleus and Shocked Environment of VV 114E Revealed by JWST MIRI Spectroscopy by F. R. Donnan et al. on Monday 10 October We present a spectroscopic analysis of the heavily obscured nucleus and the surrounding environment of the eastern region of the nearby ($z = 0.02007$) interacting galaxy VV 114 with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI). We model the spectrum from 4.9 - 28 $mu$m to extract Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission and the underlying obscured continuum. We find that the NE nucleus (A) is highly obscured where the low PAH equivalent width (EW) ratio, EW(12.7)/EW(11.3), reveals a dust enshrouded continuum source. This is confirmed by decomposing the continuum into nuclear and star-forming where the nuclear component is found to be typical of Compact Obscured Nuclei (CONs). The 11.3/6.2 PAH flux ratio is consistent with originating in star-forming regions rather than typical AGN. The second nucleus (B) is much less obscured, with PAH flux ratios also typical of star-forming regions. We do not detect any high ionisation lines such as [Ne V] or [Ne VI] which suggests that if an AGN is present it must be highly obscured. Additionally, we detect a shock front south of the secondary nucleus (B) in the [Fe II] (5.34 $mu$m) line and in warm molecular hydrogen. The 6.2 PAH emission does not spatially coincide with the low-J transitions of H$_2$ but rather appears strong at the shock front which may suggest destruction of the ionised PAHs in the post-shock gas behind the shock front. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.04647v1

Cospatial 21 cm and metal-line absorbers in the epoch of reionization -- I : Incidence and observability by Aniket Bhagwat et al. on Thursday 22 September Overdense, metal-rich regions, shielded from stellar radiation might remain neutral throughout reionization and produce metal as well as 21 cm absorption lines. Simultaneous absorption from metals and 21 cm can complement each other as probes of underlying gas properties. We use Aurora, a suite of high resolution radiation-hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation, to investigate the occurrence of such "aligned" absorbers. We calculate absorption spectra for 21 cm, OI, CII, SiII and FeII. We find velocity windows with absorption from at least one metal and 21 cm, and classify the aligned absorbers into two categories: 'aligned and cospatial absorbers' and 'aligned but not cospatial absorbers'. While 'aligned and cospatial absorbers' originate from overdense structures and can be used to trace gas properties, 'aligned but not cospatial absorbers' are due to peculiar velocity effects. The incidence of absorbers is redshift dependent, as it is dictated by the interplay between reionization and metal enrichment, and shows a peak at $z approx 8$ for the aligned and cospatial absorbers. While aligned but not cospatial absorbers disappear towards the end of reionization because of the lack of an ambient 21 cm forest, aligned and cospatial absorbers are associated with overdense pockets of neutral gas which can be found at lower redshift. We produce mock observations for a set of sightlines for the next generation of telescopes like the ELT and SKA1-LOW, finding that given a sufficiently bright background quasar, these telescopes will be able to detect both types of absorbers throughout reionization. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.10573v1

High Mass Flow Rate in a BAL Outflow of Quasar SDSS J1130+0411 by Andrew Walker et al. on Wednesday 21 September We present the analysis of the absorption troughs of six outflows observed in quasar SDSS J1130+0411 ($z approx 3.98$) with radial velocities ranging from $-2400$ to $-15,400$ km s$^{-1}$. These spectra were taken with the Very Large Telescope/Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph over the rest frame wavelength range of $1135-1890$ r{A}. In the main outflow system ($v approx -3200$ km s$^{-1}$), we identify Fe II and several Fe II* absorption troughs as well as Si II and Si II* troughs, which we use to determine the electron number density $log n_e = 2.6_{-0.7}^{+0.8}$ cm$^{-3}$. Using the column densities of these and other ions, we determine a photoionization solution with hydrogen column density $log N_H = 21.44_{-0.33}^{+0.24}$ cm$^{-2}$ and ionization parameter $log U_H = -1.75_{-0.45}^{+0.28}$. From these values we derive the distance $R = 16_{-11}^{+23}$ kpc, the average mass flow rate $dot{M} = 4100_{-2400}^{+6600}$ $M_{odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, and the kinetic luminosity $log dot{E}_k = 46.13_{-0.37}^{+0.41}$ erg s$^{-1}$. This $dot{E}_k$ is $1.4_{-0.8}^{+2.2}$% of the quasar's Eddington luminosity, and therefore contributes significantly to AGN feedback. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2208.09990v2
VLT UVES Observation of the SDSS J2357-0048 Outflow by Doyee Byun et al. on Thursday 15 September We found a broad absorption line (BAL) outflow in the VLT/UVES spectrum of the quasar SDSS J235702.54-004824.0, in which we identified four subcomponents. We measured the column densities of the ions in one of the subcomponents ($v$ = -1600 km s$^{-1}$), which include O I and Fe II. We found the kinetic luminosity of this component to be at most ~2.4% of the quasar's Eddington luminosity. This is near the amount required to contribute to AGN feedback. We also examined the time-variability of a C IV mini-BAL found at $v$ = -8700 km s$^{-1}$, which shows a shallower and narrower absorption feature attached to it in previous SDSS observations from 2000 and 2001, but not in the spectra from 2005 and onwards. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.06924v1
GOALS-JWST: Resolving the Circumnuclear Gas Dynamics in NGC 7469 in the Mid-Infrared by Vivian U et al. on Monday 05 September The nearby, luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) NGC 7469 hosts a Seyfert nucleus with a circumnuclear star-forming ring and is thus the ideal local laboratory for investigating the starburst--AGN connection in detail. We present integral-field observations of the central 1.3 kpc region in NGC 7469 obtained with the JWST Mid-InfraRed Instrument. Molecular and ionized gas distributions and kinematics at a resolution of {sim}100 pc over the 4.9 - 7.6{mu}m region are examined to study gas dynamics influenced by the central AGN. The low-ionization [Fe II] {lambda}5.34{mu}m and [Ar II] {lambda}6.99{mu}m lines are bright on the nucleus and in the starburst ring, as opposed to H2 S(5) {lambda}6.91{mu}m which is strongly peaked at the center and surrounding ISM. The high-ionization [Mg V] line is resolved and shows a broad, blueshifted component associated with the outflow. It has a nearly face-on geometry that is strongly peaked on the nucleus, where it reaches a maximum velocity of -650 km/s, and extends about 400 pc to the East. Regions of enhanced velocity dispersion in H2 and [Fe II] {sim}180 pc from the AGN that also show high L(H2)/L(PAH) and L([Fe II])/L(Pf{alpha}) ratios to the W and N of the nucleus pinpoint regions where the ionized outflow is depositing energy, via shocks, into the dense interstellar medium between the nucleus and the starburst ring. Abstract: How metabolic pathways emerged in early evolution remains largely unknown. Recently discovered chemical networks driven by iron and sulfur resemble reaction sequences found within glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, the oxidative and reductive Krebs cycle, the Wood Ljungdahl as well as the Sadenosylmethionine pathways, components of the core cellular metabolic network. These findings suggest that the evolution of central metabolism was primed by environmental chemical reactions, implying that non-enzymatic reaction networks served as a template in the evolution of enzymatic activities. We speculated that the turning point for this transition would depend on the catalytic properties of the simplest structural components of proteins, single amino acids. Here, we systematically combine constituents of Fe(II)-driven non-enzymatic reactions resembling glycolysis and pentose phosphate pathway (PPP), with single proteinogenic amino acids. Multiple reaction rates are enhanced by amino acids. In particular, cysteine is able to replace (and/or complement) the metal ion Fe(II) in driving the non-enzymatic formation of the RNA-backbone metabolite ribose 5-phosphate from 6-phosphogluconate, a rate-limiting reaction of the oxidative PPP. In the presence of both Fe(II) and cysteine, a complex is formed, enabling the non-enzymatic reaction to proceed at a wide range of temperatures. At mundane temperatures, this 'minimal enzyme-like complex' achieves a much higher specificity in the formation of ribose 5-phosphate than the Fe(II)-driven reaction at high temperatures. Hence, simple amino acids can accelerate key steps within metal-promoted metabolism-like chemical networks. Our results imply a stepwise scenario, in which environmental chemical networks served as primers in the early evolution of the metabolic network structure. Copy rights belong to original authors. The 2-oxoglutarate and Fe (II)-dependent ten-eleven translocation (TET) enzymes can oxidize 5-methylcytosine (5mC) to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC), 5-formylcytosine (5fC) and 5-carboxycytosine (5caC). Thus, it was hypothesized that this could be a pathway for active DNA demethylation. However, several studies have shown that 5hmC levels accumulate especially in neurons suggesting a role as an epigenetic mark. Nevertheless, the mechanism controlling TET activity and the role of 5hmC are poorly understood. In particular, it is not known how the neuronal TET3 isoform lacking a DNA binding domain is targeted to the DNA. In this study, the role of 5hmC during retinal maturation by genome-wide mapping of 5hmC in immature (postnatal week 2) and mature mouse retina (postnatal week 3) was studied and correlated with expression data. Furthermore, interaction partners of neu-ronal TET3, the main isoform in retinal neurons, were identified. 5hmC accumulates during retinal maturation especially in retinal and neuronal genes. Furthermore, the accumulation of 5hmC is associated with increased transcription. Among the identified proteins the transcriptional repressor REST was identified as a highly enriched TET3-specific interactor. Interestingly, REST was able to enhance TET3 hydroxylase activity. Furthermore, increased 5hmC levels were detected in REST target genes during retinal maturation and overexpression of TET3 activated transcription of REST-target genes. Moreover, NSD3 and two other histone methyltransferases were found to interact with TET3 that are able to mediate H3K36 trimethylation. Finally, it was shown that TET3 is able to enhance NSD3-mediated H3K36 trimethylation to pro-mote transcriptional activation. In conclusion, the data suggests that 5hmC is a stable epigenetic base in retinal neurons that is involved in transcriptional activation. Furthermore, it was shown that 5hmC is generated by TET3 that is recruited to the DNA by transcriptional regulators such as REST in a context-specific manner.

Matériel : brumisateur, 2 grands béchers, pinceau, Erlenmeyer avec bouchon, papier absorbant, lunettes de sécurité, gants de protection Produits chimiques : Thiocyanate d'ammonium, chlorure de fer (III), hexacyanoferrate (II) de potassium, acide gallique, eau distillée Procédure expérimentale : 10 g de chlorure de fer (III) sont dissout dans l'eau distillé, dans l'Erlenmeyer. Cette solution est utilisée pour créer le texte ou dessin sur une grande feuille de papier absorbant, à l'aide d'un pinceau. Laisser sécher le papier la nuit. La toile est fixée sur un tableau, dont la taille dépend de l'auditoire. Si l'image est aspergée par une solution de NH4SCN (2 g dans 200 ml d'eau), une coloration rouge est obtenue. L'utilisation d'une solution de 5g K4[Fe(CN)6] x 3 H2O dans 200 ml d'eau provoquera une coloration bleue. L'acide gallique donne une couleur noire. L'intensité des couleurs peut être variée par les concentrations des solutions utilisées. Le même effet se produit si on imprègne auparavant la toile avec les solutions de thiocyanate, hexacyanoferrate ou l'acide gallique, et la solution de FeCl3 est appliquée avec le brumisateur. Explication : les thiocyanates forment avec le fer en solution aqueuse un complexe d'un rouge intense, tel que Fe(SCN)3 ou [Fe(SCN)(H2O)5]2+ . Avec l'hexacyanoferrate, le « bleu de Prusse » est formé, dont la couleur est due au transfert de charge entre Fe(II) et Fe(III) : Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3 x 14-16 H2O. This chemistry video podcast looks at the reactions of basic solutions (ie ammonia solution and hydroxide solutions) with solutions of metal salts (ie Mg, Al, FeII, FeIII, Cu, Zn, Ag, and Cr). As well as displaying the appearance of the resulting products, the chemical equations representing the reactions are shown. Demonstrated are the production of the complex ions aluminate, zincate and chromate from addition of excess hydroxide to solutions of the amphoteric metal salts of Al, Zn and Cr. The complex ions produced by addition of excess ammonia with Cu, Zn and Ag are also demonstrated.

Thermal decomposition in a thermobalance of Fe(CO)5 adsorbed on alkali-metal, hydrogen-Y, dealuminated Y, L and omega zeolites proceeds stepwise via slow decarbonylation at low and high temperatures, separated by a fast endothermic reaction. Average CO/Fe ratios have been determined after each step. From i.r. results the former intermediates are assigned to species bearing bridging CO, whereas reaction products with CO/Fe < 1 are associated with highly unsaturated carbonyl clusters in strong interaction with the zeolite.The thermal stability of zeolite/Fe(CO)5 adducts as well as of the intermediates increases with the electron-donor properties of the matrix and can be rationalized using the Sanderson electronegativity concept. Iron loadings ranging from 2.4 wt % in zeolite L up to 10 wt % with NaY and HY are obtained by decomposition in inert atmosphere. Under vacuum conditions loss of metal up to 50% is observed. Metallic iron clusters are the final decomposition products in alkali-metal zeolites, as probed by NO adsorption. In HY part of the metallic iron is oxidized to FeII ions, which are located at cation positions.
