This week's Open Mic guest is Mike Seyfert, President and CEO of the National Grain and Feed Association. Most in the ag industry were relieved that dockworkers were back on the job following an agreement on wages that allowed East Coast and Gulf ports to reopen last week. Seyfert says container shipments are an integral factor in meeting global customers demands for a number of U.S. agricultural products. Prior to his tenure at NGFA, Seyfert had an extensive career on Capitol Hill. He recognizes the challenges of  seeing a farm bill approved by the end of the year, but says the industry needs new policy now.

Am morgigen Freitag startet wieder eine zivile Rettungsmission im Mittelmeer, um Flüchtlingen in Seenot zu helfen. Die Mission wird durchgeführt von der Organisation RESQSHIP. Mit an Bord ist der Vorstandsvorsitzende von RESQSHIP, der Mainzer Jurist Stefen Seyfert, und er hat im SWR erklärt, wie der Einsatz im Seegebiet südlich von Lampedusa funktioniert: "Wir scannen zum Beispiel den Horizont mit Ferngläsern, aber wir haben auch Radar und es gibt den Notfunkkanal, über den andere Schiffe was melden können." Wie genau die Retter dann im Ernstfall vorgehen, hat Seyfert mit SWR Aktuell-Moderator Florian Rudolph besprochen.

La semaine dernière, la collaboration IceCube a publié des nouveaux résultats de détection de neutrinos astrophysiques, une publication annoncée bien en avance avec conférence de presse et tout le tintouin. Alors que je m'attendais à l'annonce de la découverte de nouvelles sources de neutrinos astrophysiques clairement identifiées, comme par exemple des galaxies de Seyfert, quelle ne fut pas ma surprise (et ma petite déception) en découvrant qu'il s'agissait en fait de la découverte de l'émission de neutrinos de notre propre galaxie, et plus exactement de son disque. Cette découverte est parue dans Science et mérite tout de même qu'on s'y arrête un instant.

The radio structure of the γ -ray narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy SDSS J211852 96 - 073227 5 by Xi Shao et al. on Wednesday 30 November The $gamma$-ray narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) can be considered to be the third class of $gamma$-ray active galactic nuclei possessing relativistic jets. In this paper, we present multi-band high resolution Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) images of the $gamma$-ray NLS1, SDSS J211852.96$-$073227.5 (J2118$-$0732, $z=0.26$). We find a core-jet radio morphology and significant flux density variations in the radio core. The high brightness temperature estimated from VLBA images and core variability demonstrate that it exhibits substantial relativistic beaming effects. From considering radio emission in several bands, we find that the source has an inverted spectrum above 1 GHz but a steep spectrum at low frequencies from 74 MHz to 1 GHz; these may arise from the present activity and the old diffuse/extended emission, respectively. The core-jet morphology, significant flux density variations, and beaming effect make J2118$-$0732 resemble a blazar. BASS XXXIX: Swift-BAT AGN with changing-look optical spectra by Matthew J. Temple et al. on Wednesday 30 November Changing-look (CL) AGN are unique probes of accretion onto supermassive black holes (SMBHs), especially when simultaneous observations in complementary wavebands allow investigations into the properties of their accretion flows. We present the results of a search for CL behaviour in 412 Swift-BAT detected AGN with multiple epochs of optical spectroscopy from the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS). 125 of these AGN also have 14-195 keV ultra-hard X-ray light-curves from Swift-BAT which are contemporaneous with the epochs of optical spectroscopy. Eight CL events are presented for the first time, where the appearance or disappearance of broad Balmer line emission leads to a change in the observed Seyfert type classification. Combining with known events from the literature, 21 AGN from BASS are now known to display CL behaviour. Nine CL events have 14-195 keV data available, and five of these CL events can be associated with significant changes in their 14-195 keV flux from BAT. The ultra-hard X-ray flux is less affected by obscuration and so these changes in the 14-195 keV band suggest that the majority of our CL events are not due to changes in line-of-sight obscuration. We derive a CL rate of 0.7-6.2 per cent on 10-25 year time-scales, and show that many transitions happen within at most a few years. An Analytical Fourier-Transformation Model for the Production of Hard and Soft X-Ray Time Lags in AGNs: Application to 1H 0707-495 by David C. Baughman et al. on Tuesday 29 November The variability of the X-ray emission from active galactic nuclei is often characterized using time lags observed between soft and hard energy bands in the detector. The time lags are usually computed using the complex cross spectrum, which is based on the Fourier transforms of the hard and soft time series data. It has been noted that some active galactic nuclei display soft X-ray time lags, in addition to the more ubiquitous hard lags. Hard time lags are thought to be produced via propagating fluctuations, spatial reverberation, or via the thermal Comptonization of soft seed photons injected into a hot electron cloud. The physical origin of the soft lags has been a subject of debate over the last decade. Currently, the reverberation interpretation is recognized as a leading theory. In this paper, we explore the alternative possibility that the soft X-ray time lags result partially from the thermal and bulk Comptonization of monochromatic seed photons, which in the case of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H 0707-495, may correlate with fluorescence of iron L-line emission. In our model, the seed photons are injected into a hot, quasi-spherical corona in the inner region of the accretion flow. We develop an exact, time-dependent analytical model for the thermal and bulk Comptonization of the seed photons based on a Fourier-transformed radiation transport equation, and we demonstrate that the model successfully reproduces both the hard and soft time lags observed from 1H 0707-495. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.14590v1

The Extreme Super-Eddington NLS1 RX J0134 2-4258 -- II A Weak-Line Seyfert Linking to the Weak-Line Quasar by Chichuan Jin et al. on Tuesday 29 November RX J0134.2-4258 is one of the most super-Eddington narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, on which we conducted a monitoring campaign from radio to X-rays. In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of its optical/UV spectra and broadband spectral energy distribution (SED). Our study shows that the preferred black hole mass of RX J0134.2-4258 is $M_{rm BH} sim 2 times 10^{7}~M_{odot}$, giving a mass accretion rate through the outer disc of $dot{m}_{rm out} sim 20$ (assuming zero spin), compared to the observed luminosity ratio $L_{rm bol}/L_{rm Edd} sim 6$. This reduction in radiative efficiency is expected for super-Eddington flows, as power can be lost via advection and/or disc winds. We find that the optical/UV lines of RX J0134.2-4258 resemble those from weak-like quasars (WLQs), as it has notably weak C IV and N V emission lines. It also has drastic X-ray variability, again similar to that recently observed in some other WLQs. However, WLQs have systematically higher masses ($gtrsim 10^8~M_{odot}$), and lower Eddington ratios ($dot{m}_{rm out} sim 1$) than RX J0134.2-4258. We compare instead to the most extreme NLS1s, with similarly large $dot{m}_{rm out}$ but smaller masses. These show similarly large reductions in radiative efficiency but their UV lines are not similarly wind-dominated. The Extreme Super-Eddington NLS1 RX J0134 2-4258 -- II A Weak-Line Seyfert Linking to the Weak-Line Quasar by Chichuan Jin et al. on Monday 28 November RX J0134.2-4258 is one of the most super-Eddington narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, on which we conducted a monitoring campaign from radio to X-rays. In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of its optical/UV spectra and broadband spectral energy distribution (SED). Our study shows that the preferred black hole mass of RX J0134.2-4258 is $M_{rm BH} sim 2 times 10^{7}~M_{odot}$, giving a mass accretion rate through the outer disc of $dot{m}_{rm out} sim 20$ (assuming zero spin), compared to the observed luminosity ratio $L_{rm bol}/L_{rm Edd} sim 6$. This reduction in radiative efficiency is expected for super-Eddington flows, as power can be lost via advection and/or disc winds. We find that the optical/UV lines of RX J0134.2-4258 resemble those from weak-like quasars (WLQs), as it has notably weak C IV and N V emission lines. It also has drastic X-ray variability, again similar to that recently observed in some other WLQs. However, WLQs have systematically higher masses ($gtrsim 10^8~M_{odot}$), and lower Eddington ratios ($dot{m}_{rm out} sim 1$) than RX J0134.2-4258. We compare instead to the most extreme NLS1s, with similarly large $dot{m}_{rm out}$ but smaller masses. These show similarly large reductions in radiative efficiency but their UV lines are not similarly wind-dominated. An Analytical Fourier-Transformation Model for the Production of Hard and Soft X-Ray Time Lags in AGNs: Application to 1H 0707-495 by David C. Baughman et al. on Monday 28 November The variability of the X-ray emission from active galactic nuclei is often characterized using time lags observed between soft and hard energy bands in the detector. The time lags are usually computed using the complex cross spectrum, which is based on the Fourier transforms of the hard and soft time series data. It has been noted that some active galactic nuclei display soft X-ray time lags, in addition to the more ubiquitous hard lags. Hard time lags are thought to be produced via propagating fluctuations, spatial reverberation, or via the thermal Comptonization of soft seed photons injected into a hot electron cloud. The physical origin of the soft lags has been a subject of debate over the last decade. Currently, the reverberation interpretation is recognized as a leading theory. In this paper, we explore the alternative possibility that the soft X-ray time lags result partially from the thermal and bulk Comptonization of monochromatic seed photons, which in the case of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H 0707-495, may correlate with fluorescence of iron L-line emission. In our model, the seed photons are injected into a hot, quasi-spherical corona in the inner region of the accretion flow. We develop an exact, time-dependent analytical model for the thermal and bulk Comptonization of the seed photons based on a Fourier-transformed radiation transport equation, and we demonstrate that the model successfully reproduces both the hard and soft time lags observed from 1H 0707-495. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.14590v1

We confirm the low significance detection with eROSITA of a previously known, optically faint $z=6.56$ quasar from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) survey. We obtained a pointed follow-up observation of the source with the Chandra X-ray telescope in order to confirm the eROSITA detection. Using new near-infrared spectroscopy, we derived the physical properties of the super-massive black hole. Finally, we used this detection to infer a lower limit on the black hole accretion density rate at $z>6$. The Chandra observation confirms the eFEDS source as the most distant blind X-ray detection to date. The derived X-ray luminosity is high with respect to the rest-frame optical emission of the quasar. With a narrow MgII line, low derived black hole mass, and high Eddington ratio, as well as its steep photon index, the source shows properties that are similar to local narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, which are thought to be powered by young super-massive black holes. Kvasaarit ovat kaikkein kirkkaimpia aktiivisia galakseja ja maailmankaikkeuden tehokkaimpia energiantuottajia. Valtava kirkkaus syntyy, kun niiden supermassiiviseen mustaan aukkoon valuu ainetta niin sanotusta kertymäkiekosta. Mustan aukon ympäristössä materia kuumenee ja säteilee sen vuoksi paljon voimakkaammin kuin ympäröivä galaksi. Kvasaarit ovat kiehtova tutkimuskohde, koska niiden kaikkia yksityiskohtia ei vielä tarkkaan tiedetä. Ei esimerkiksi tiedetä, millä mekanismilla kvasaarin mustan aukon lähettyviltä sinkoutuu avaruuteen valtavia plasmasuihkuja lähes valon nopeudella. Kvasaareja syntyi suhteellisen varhaisessa maailmankaikkeudessa, kun universumi oli nykyistä tiheämpi ja ainetta oli tarjolla kvasaarin energiantuotantoon. Epätavallisen kirkkaita Seyfertin galakseja on ehdotettu niiden nykyiseksi vastineeksi. On saatu viitteitä siitä, että oma galaksimme Linnunratakin on saattanut olla aktiivinen historiansa aikana. Metsähovissa Kirkkonummella tutkitaan kvasaareja ja muita aktiivisia galakseja kuten Seyfert-galakseja. This week's Open Mic guest is Mike Seyfert, President and CEO of the National Grain and Feed Association. NFGA celebrates its 125th anniversary this week and maintains the same objectives and mission statement that brought the group together over a century ago. Seyfert says NGFA members celebrate House approval of the Infrastructure Bill and look forward to much needed improvements in the nation's roads, bridges and waterways. Seyfert says NGFA supports competition in the rail industry and continued service to local elevators even to the last mile of service. NGFA supports funding toward expansion of conservation practices on working lands but is concerned with programs that would idle additional acres. Seyfert echoes comments from legislators that congressional ag leaders should be responsible for amending farm programs. NGFA supports free trade and would welcome attempts to see the U.S. join the CPTPP.
