Feeding ourselves and our families healthy, home-cooked meals can feel like a daunting task - especially when the planning and prepping revolve around caring for young children, too. But the reality is, you're going to still expend the time to make some kind of meal, anyway - it'll likely just feel stressful and end up less nourishing than you'd hoped for. In this episode, Dr. Morgan interviews Cassy Joy Garcia from Fed + Fit, and New York Times best-selling author of three different meal planning cookbooks, about her methods for preparing meals for her family with three young children - in a way that saves time and money, while also reducing food waste and building in the flexibility for something like a spontaneous pizza night. We feel WAY lighter and more inclined to take on a new habit like this, given the way Cassy outlines it, and we hope you feel the inspiration, as well. This episode is sponsored by:Redmond Salt >> Click here and use code HEALTHYMOTHER to save 15% on your order.Needed >> Click here and use code HEALTHYMOTHER to save 20% off your first order.Resources from this episode:Follow Cassy on InstagramLearn from her blog, Fed + FitPurchase her cookbooks:Cook Once, Eat All WeekCook Once Dinner FixFed & Fit: A 28-Day Food & Fitness Plan to Jump-Start Your Life with Over 175 Squeaky-Clean Paleo RecipesThe Four Tendencies by Gretchen RubinDr. Morgan's Immune Wellness While Pregnant and Breastfeeding courseStay Connected With Us:Healthy As A Mother: www.healthyasamother.comInstagram: @healthyasamotherpodcastDr. Leah: www.womanhoodwellness.comInstagram: @drleahgordonDr. Morgan: www.milkmedicine.comInstagram: @morganmacdermott

As a busy mom of two, Cassy Joy Garcia, the best-selling author of Cook Once, Eat All Week, has limited time to get food on the table. With this book, she shares a fresh approach to preparing dinner in a hurry. These 120 easy, delicious recipes are designed to use the leftovers from one recipe to quickly cook a completely different meal the next day. About Cassy Joy: When asked what she believes is her mission on this Earth, she replies, “I strive to empathize with people. I thrive when I connect with others in order to nurture them in a way that helps them feel that they are not alone in this world.” This is Cassy Joy Garcia. Optimistic. Determined. Encouraging. Author. Nutritionist. Self-Motivator. Cassy Joy Garcia is an inspiration to many and has quite a lot on her plate (pun intended). Between her first book, 'Fed & Fit', a weekly 30-minute Fed & Fit podcast, and her healthy lifestyle blog FedandFit.com, Cassy’s achievements didn’t rapidly appear out of thin air; they are a result of a tireless journey down windy roads with arduous speed bumps. Her personal journey has taken hard work, motivation and perseverance. This is her story. Cassy, a 30-year-old native San Antonian, grew up in a loving family with three sisters and caring parents who cooked home-cooked meals, which gave them strength and nourishment needed to fuel non-stop teenage girls. As she entered college and lived on her own, Cassy’s classes and social activities kept her so busy that she forgot to eat. She was becoming noticeably thinner and continued to eat less because her appearance mirrored a healthy lifestyle. Cassy was borderline anorexic and her family was getting concerned. When she turned 21, her weight yo-yoed and shot in the opposite direction. She was drinking beer, eating pizza and potato skins and just about anything a college student could muster to afford. Her weight gain contributed to a negative body image, and she could barely get through her classes without falling asleep. So Cassy started the crash diet circuit over the next few years, tackling Atkins, South Beach, Low Calorie, Low Fat. She even attempted Veganism. None of these techniques lasted long and she always found herself gaining weight a short time after each diet concluded. She was depressed and fatigued, and preferred the couch to the gym. It got to the point where Cassy felt like she was living in someone else’s body. She could barely recognize her physical and emotional self. She was finally ready for a change. When Cassy first attempted Paleo, it was to look skinnier - to fit in those smaller jeans tucked away in the corner of her closet. She was proud of herself for stepping out of her comfort zone, but it was hard and she wanted to throw in the towel countless times. It wasn’t until she was actually feeling better that made her realize the driving force behind her ultimate life change was a rejuvenation of her confidence, energy and self-esteem. That was more important. Once she started feeling better, her newfound Paleo lifestyle became easier, almost second nature. Her unhealthy body image washed away, she slept better, and she could drive a car without struggling to stay awake. Cassy took what she learned firsthand from her health challenges, put in years of research, and is now giving back to those who she hopes can realize that they can do it too. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree, and is a nutrition consultant and an expert in the kitchen with over 400 nutritious recipes in her arsenal. She created her website FedandFit.com to empower healthy lifestyle transformations through clear nutrition science and delicious Paleo-friendly foods. It brings Cassy joy to interact with others that face the same struggles that she too endured. Cassy calls her site “home”. Cassy‘s first book 'Fed & Fit: A 28-Day Food & Fitness Plan to Jumpstart Your Life With Over 175 Squeaky-Clean Paleo Recipes', published Summer 2016 (Victory Belt). 'Fed & Fit' features 190 of her grain-free, dairy-free and artificial-ingredient-free recipes spanning every meal of the day, from frittatas, salads and casseroles to slower cooker favorites. Cassy wanted 'Fed & Fit' to transcend the traditional cookbook and offer readers a roadmap to wellness. She opens the book with a discussion of her "Four Pillars of Health" (Mindset, Sleep/Hydration, Food and Fitness) and goes on to offer tips on portion control and meal prep with an actionable 28-day food and fitness plan for getting healthy. Cassy even enlisted New York Times bestselling author and fitness coach Juli Bauer to contribute workouts to the plan.

Remember to check back every Monday for a new episode and be sure to subscribe on iTunes! Find us HERE on iTunes and be sure to "subscribe." I would LOVE some feedback, so feel free to leave a review in iTunes, comment below, or even give us a shout on social media! Ep. 58: Stay Fed+Fit at a Sporting Event Today we’re going to talk about some Fed and Fit behind the scenes updates, and also some good, better, best food and beverage options that you can find at sporting events. Cassy Joy: Good morning everybody! I hope you guys had an awesome weekend, and you’re getting ready for another great week. So to start off on today’s show, I want to once again apologize for sound quality. If you hear some background noise, it’s because there is some background noise. {laughs} I am in the car commuting right now, and it just seemed like a really great time to go ahead and record this show. The thoughts for today’s show are fresh at the top of my mind, plus I am, as you guys know, very richly scheduled at the moment so it’s nice when I’m able to multitask. So thank you for sticking with me. And to fill you in, if you are unaware of what’s going on over in this Fed and Fit world; I am; let’s see, we are coming into the middle of March and in the middle of July my first book will be coming out. It is part cookbook, part complete overview of really my personal philosophy of food and fitness. So I will have a sample of my 28-day food and fitness program in the book, the Fed and Fit Project if you’re familiar with it. That thing that I offered online; that thing. {laughs} That program that I offered online starting last fall, and we have since taken it down, offline while I was writing the book and also rebuilding the online format. So there’s a whole bunch of stuff in the works. And if you guys are seeing less of me on social media, if I’m not as available as much, I promise I’m still working for you, it’s just kind of the behind the scenes stage of my business right now. I feel like Oz behind the curtain, pulling all kinds of pulleys and triggers, and getting things set up for a really great show. That will all really, really kick off this summer. So in the meantime, although I'm not posting weekly recipes on my blog right now. I’ll be able to pick those up as soon as I’m over this next big hump of the book, the work, but I am still committed to these podcasts on a weekly basis. So I'm at least able to touch in, provide some new content, say hello, and just serve as a reminder that I’m still here for you guys. So if you ever do want to hear more from me, please come find me on social media. Of course on Instagram, but I recently really started to get into one of the new social media platforms; new to me at least, called SnapChat. And if you are not already familiar with SnapChat, I highly recommend you look into it. To be completely honest, my youngest sister, Samantha, who has joined me on the podcast before for that Fed and Fit college student miniseries, Samantha is 5 years my junior, and she’s kind of my anchor as far as what the young, hip kids are up to, and she’s been trying to convince me to get on SnapChat for years now, and I have resisted because I thought; I don’t know I kind of had some preconceived notions about that platform. So I decided, no I’m good with my Instagram and from what little I understand about Facebook. But I finally jumped in with both feet, and you guys, it is such a fun platform. If you follow me on there, you know how much I’m enjoying it because I post all the time. So SnapChat, you would have to look me up by my username, @FedandFit, just like I am across all the other platforms. And really what I post there, it’s completely unedited, really just glimpsed into what I'm up to. So if you want to know what the heck am I up to,

I have always enjoyed talking with her and connecting with her, and you know, we’ve just kind of stayed in touch over the years. I thought she would be an awesome person to bring onto the show to give you her own perspective on this paleo industry, how it’s really helped her and shaped her future, whether it’s a profession or a hobby right now, time will tell, but she’s really good at it regardless of what she wants to do. Macy, it’s an honor to have you on the show; thank you so much for joining me! Macy Diulus: Thanks for having me, it’s such a sweet intro. Cassy Joy: Oh yeah! Of course. It really is an honor. I love talking with you, I always walk away inspired and wanting to stay in touch because I just know you’re going to blow the worlds’ socks off, and I want to be there for it! Well, I would love for you to tell some of our listeners a little bit about you, about your story, and really what led you to following a paleo lifestyle. Macy Diulus: Sure. Caroline Potter: I love it. I love it. {laughs} 1. Introducing our guest, Caroline Potter [1:12] Cassy Joy: Well good. Just to give you guys a brief overview, if you’re not familiar with Caroline yet; she is an NTP and authored the cookbook All American Paleo Table, and she’s also the brains and beauty behind the blog Colorful Eats. She has an awesome newsletter, I recommend you sign up for, that goes out pretty regularly. Caroline lives on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii with her husband, Steven, and they’re super adorable golden retriever, Libby, which you can see pictures of her on Instagram. Caroline loves all things outdoors; hot cappuccinos, and grilling on the weekends, which is probably why we are such natural friends. {laughs} Caroline Potter: {laughs} I really do love all those things. Cassy Joy: You do? That’s so nice. I like all those things too. Those are good ones. Well, I’m thrilled to have you on today. I wanted to bring Caroline on because; well, I really just like introducing you guys to other really great people in the industry, people that I really look up to for a bunch of different reasons. But Caroline is definitely among that. She came out this year, like I said, with her debut cookbook and it is absolutely stunning. If you haven’t grabbed a copy yet, I highly recommend it. She really took a bunch of; if you can flip through the calendar of American holidays, she really took some of those classic family favorites and revitalized them with some really great nutrition thinking {laughs} is that the best description you’ve ever heard of your book, ever? {laughing} Caroline Potter: Pretty great. Pretty great Cassy. {Laughs} Cassy Joy: Some really great nutrition thinking went on in that book {laughs}. Caroline Potter: I’m going to use that one from now on. Cassy Joy: You should. That should be printed somewhere. {laughs} Anyways, it’s absolutely stunning, and she did an awesome job. I’ve made several things from it so far; the biscuits were awesome, the burger was awesome. That bacon jam, Miss Caroline; Mrs. Caroline, has changed my world. Caroline Potter: Um, yeah,
The Fed+Fit Podcast | Nurturing a Healthy Mindset for a Healthy Lifestyle We're back with our 45th episode of the Fed+Fit Podcast! Remember to check back every Monday for a new episode and be sure to subscribe on iTunes! Find us HERE on iTunes and be sure to "subscribe." Episode 45 Topics: FitStar I would LOVE some feedback, so feel free to leave a review in iTunes, comment below, or even give us a shout on social media! Ep. 45: Fed+Fit Travel Tips Today we’re going to talk about how to stay Fed, Fit, and Healthy while you’re traveling for work, for fun, or for visiting family this holiday season. Topics: 1. Traveling tips to staying healthy [2:38] 2. What to pack; luggage and carry-on [8:48] 3. What to buy when you get there [15:49] 4. Staying fit on the road [22:30] 5. Recommendations for jet lag [26:48] Cassy Joy: Good morning everybody! I hope this finds you well and warm on this lovely December morning that we’re having. Today’s podcast is a little bit unique, because instead of cozying myself up in my home office/studio to make sure we’ve got really great sound quality, I am working in my kitchen, trying to make sure that I’m staying on top of a deadline that I’m working towards for a big project. So I apologize if you hear all kinds of background noises or anything like that; or maybe Gus barking in the background or knocking on the door to come in. That’s what’s going on today, so thank you for bearing with me. If you do follow me on Instagram, and you keep up with my blog, you have heard these ramblings of this project that I’ve been working on, and I really cannot wait to tell you guys about it. I’m writing it for you, and my love language, one of them at least and the way I give love is to give gifts. And this is really playing to that part of my personality. I’m viewing this huge project that I’m working on as, I don’t know, it’s like a great big awesome thing, gift that I’m working towards. I just hope and know at the same time that you’re going to love it. So a proper announcement about what that actually is, if you haven’t already guessed it, will be coming soon so keep your eyes peeled. But what it’s got me doing is pretty much cooking day in and day out in my kitchen, and I absolutely love it. I love and live for really full days, so it works out great. Here we go, here’s Gus, speak of the devil. Hi puppy! Come on in. He doesn’t want to come in. He wants me to stand here with the door open. {laughs} Ok. So it’s been great though, so thank you for bearing with me. My team has been awesome to get stuff out. We’ve got recipes written for the blog, so it will come up, we’ll be publishing at least one a week throughout this holiday season while I’m working, so keep your eyes peeled for that. I’m going to make this podcast work; I promised you a podcast every week and that’s what we’re going to do. 1. Traveling tips to staying healthy [2:38] So, ok let’s get to it! As you guys know, I got married in October, and then my husband and I went on our honeymoon to New Zealand. We were there for 2 weeks, and it was an awesome trip. And if you have been there before, you know what I’m talking about. The entire countryside is just enchanting. It’s really, really beautiful. Austin and I aren’t exactly beachy people; we’re pretty restless. If you can’t tell, I like to work and be doing things {laughs}. As does Austin, my husband. So, trying to relax on a beach we could probably do it for half a day and then we’re ready to get up and go do something. So New Zealand was perfect for us because we were able to really schedule a bunch of adventures. We went skydiving, we swam with dolphins in really, really cold water. And that was actually my idea, swimming with the dolphins {laughs} and I needed some pep talking to actually get in the water at that point. I’ll tell you this really quick story; we get to this dolphin swim place,
The Fed+Fit Podcast | Nurturing a Healthy Mindset for a Healthy Lifestyle We're back with our 34th episode of the Fed+Fit Podcast! Remember to check back every Monday for a new episode and be sure to subscribe on iTunes! Find us HERE on iTunes and be sure to "subscribe." Episode 34 Topics: Cassy’s News Real [3:32] Hydration and water [10:12] Alcohol [25:21] Caffeine [31:06] Berkey Water Filter Swell Water Bottles We would LOVE some feedback, so feel free to leave a review in iTunes, comment below, or even give us a shout on social media! Ep. 34: The Fed+Fit College Student: Part 2 This is the Fed and Fit podcast starting your week off with motivational thoughts on real food and fun fitness activities with Cassy Joy Garcia and co-host, Charissa Talbot. Remember our disclaimer; the information and opinions shared in this podcast are solely those of any given individual, and not a substitute for medical advice. Here are the ladies. Today we’re going to talk about the Fed and Fit college student hydration plan, tips to navigating the alcohol scene, and how to have a healthy relationship with caffeine. Cassy Joy: And we’re back! Today I’m joined once again by my lovely sister, Samantha Garcia. Hey Sam! Samantha Garcia: Hello! Cassy Joy: {laughs} I think today we might have a little bit better audio quality. Sam and I are working out some kinks, but we’re getting there. Samantha Garcia: Ye-haw! Cassy Joy: Ye-haw! So we’re excited about today’s episode. If you caught last weeks’ episode, which was number 33 of the Fed and Fit podcast, we launched a series called the Fed and Fit college student. And this is going to be a mini-series, 5-6 episodes that we’re doing that, while it’s directed at providing the information that will empower somebody that is either entering college or somebody that is going through any kind of a big transition in their life. Providing them with the information that they might need to make it as seamless and healthy as possible. So we’ve broke all of that out; we’ve got some fun facts and fun information for you guys, and I hope, even if you may not be going to college, or you don’t have someone near and dear to you that is in that part of their life, you are able to get something out of today’s episode. Sam and I, while we’ve been writing the content out, we’ve been going through memories and having some self discovery, so I think we’ve got a good show ahead. So today we’re going to talk about, leading into part 2 of this mini-series, we’re going to talk about all the liquids. {laughs} Samantha Garcia: {laughs} Cassy Joy: We’re going to talk about, while part 1 we decided was priority number 1 in terms of the pillars of health is sleep, and that’s something that we talk about a lot in the Fed and Fit project. But priority number 1 being sleep, and we talked all about the reasons why, how to get better sleep, and what it can really do for you in your college career, in your professional career, in your life in general and your health overall. Today we’re turning our attention to water. We’re going to talk about hydration and what that really means. And because they’re so closely associated, we’re going to expand the water conversation and talk about a couple of other liquids to include caffeine and alcohol. And this is an especially interesting topic when you’re talking to college students, because caffeine and alcohol tend to be the focus more so than regular water. So we’re going to address those, and we’re going to talk briefly about them and just realistically sort of just lay out the facts for you, what caffeine really does to your body, what alcohol really does to your body, how to best prepare your body if you are going to enjoy some of those things, and then some more reasonable practices, so just some things to keep in mind. 1. Cassy’s News Real [3:32] But, before we get there,

Ep. 33: The Fed+Fit College Student: Part 1 This is the Fed and Fit podcast starting your week off with motivational thoughts on real food and fun fitness activities with Cassy Joy Garcia and co-host, Charissa Talbot. Remember our disclaimer; the information and opinions shared in this podcast are solely those of any given individual, and not a substitute for medical advice. Here are the ladies. Today, we’re introducing the Fed and Fit college student miniseries with our first topic, the importance of sleep. We’re sharing tips and tricks on how to negotiate with your roommate, how to time manage, how to set up your dorm room, and what to do when you’re sleep deprived. TOPICS: 1. Cassy’s announcements [3:04] 2. Introducing our guest, Samantha Garcia [5:14] 3. Fed and Fit college students [9:03] 4. First pillar of health: Sleep [15:35] 5. FOMO: the fear of missing out [20:18] 6. Napping [23:24] 7. Setting up your dorm room [25:45] 8. How to recover from sleep deprivation [30:48] Cassy Joy: And we’re back with another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast! Today is episode number 33, which I think; that’s a special number. Samantha Garcia: Yeah. Cassy Joy: Because it’s 11 times 3, and 11 is definitely a special number. {laughs} Samantha Garcia: {laughs} It is, any way you slice it. Cassy Joy: Oh goodness! Today, if you couldn’t tell, that is not the voice of Miss Charissa {laughs}. My other sister, Samantha Garcia, is joining me on the show today. Samantha Garcia: Hello! Cassy Joy: {laughs} And we hope you can hear us ok. We’re trying a slightly different audio system. I wanted to bring Samantha on for a number of reasons; I’ll get to those in a second. A little bit of housekeeping first. I wanted to let all of you guys know that if you are having trouble accessing the older podcast episodes, those are now available. I received an email from a listener saying they wanted to go back and listen, and I had no idea that not all of the previous episodes were still loaded on iTunes! So we’ve gotten that fixed, so you are more than welcome to scroll back and listen to all of those straight from your podcast app on your phone! So there’s that. Second piece of housekeeping, is that the enrollment in the September project is now open. I know a lot of you wanted to jump in in August, and it was a little bit late. So now is the time, you can log onto FedandFit.com, and go on the top menu bar, all the way to the right, there’s a tab called the project. Click on that, and it will take you right to the page with more information. We are accepting, once again like last time, there are 5 spots available with one on one coaching with your truly, I am doing the coaching for these first couple of ones. That means that you get me on the phone for 30 minutes once a week during the 4 weeks. So, anyways, that’s available. I would love to have you. And I think that’s about it. 1. Cassy’s announcements [3:04] Before we jump into the meat of today’s show, and I introduce Samantha a little bit better, I want to talk just briefly about what we’re up to right now. So, the podcast so far, what we’ve done is have come up with some topics that we believe are really important to talk about, they’re things that,
