Welcome to our 100th episode of the Food Freedom and Fertility podcast. We celebrate this episode with the one and only Cassy Joy Garcia who is a recipe developer. Cassy Joy Garcia, a New York Times best-selling author, of Cook Once Dinner Fix, Cook Once Eat All Week, and Fed and Fit as well as the creative force behind the popular food blog Fed & Fit. Eager to share her healthy living secrets with the world, she started Fed & Fit in 2011. Since then, she became a holistic nutrition consultant and transitioned her personal blog into a tremendously supportive and nimble online wellness editorial, backed by a small but mighty team of writers, researchers, and editors. After realizing that her own struggles to get a healthy homemade dinner on the table overlapped with the same struggles experienced by her readers, she decided that there must be a better way. The Cook Once method was born and it has revolutionized how people cook. Cassy currently resides in San Antonio, TX with her husband and three children. During this episode Cassy describes the difference from her earlier books and her most current but she also shares with us some of her helpful tips in the kitchen. Some tips such as how to make a budget go further in the grocery store and how to store your foods so they last longer. She also helps you understand the difference between batch cooking vs meal prepping and breaks it down so that it is palatable for the novice at home cook. Cassy shares numerous resources to help you figure out how to shop once and eat all week. Cassy shares that a quick and easy win in the kitchen when you just don't feel like you aren't doing enough is KEEP IT SIMPLE. You do not have to dive into the most difficult recipe, keep it exciting, fun and easy… making it doable for you is the most important part.   Majority of Cassy's at home cooking is doing with the stove and oven, however a lot of her recipes on her site and in her book explain how to use other kitchen gadgets such as an air fryer or toaster oven. She also shares some special fridge hacks on how to not let food go to waste. Cassy and Caitlin emphasize during this episode how important it is to stay true to yourself and acknowledge what you are capable of so that you do not get stressed trying to do too much all at once in the kitchen. For those of you currently TTC or you are pregnant (yay) Cassy shares that eating a colorful meal was her goal during that time in her life and even now as she helps create nutritious meals for her cookbooks, website and her own children. Cassy Joy wants to make putting a healthy, budget-friendly meal on the table as simple as possible. With experience throwing herself into different diets that never quite seemed to work, Cassy Joy started to sift through the noise of diet culture and realized there wasn’t much out there that made sense for her. Feeding Yourself With Food, Nutrition, & Happiness While pregnant with her daughter, Cassy Joy created the Cook Once Eat All Week Method and put it into the universe in hopes of helping some women who were struggling like she was. What happened next was an explosion of the theory that has now been embraced by countless women to save time, money and energy. Providing prep day instructions, nutrition information and meal planning strategies, the Cook Once Eat All Week method puts a new spin on eating leftovers that will leave you excited rather than bored and fill you and your family with the nutrients necessary to thrive. A good friend of mine who is unapologetically herself in every way, Cassy Joy is all about finding a sense of community and comradery with your fellow humans through food, nutrition, and happiness. Episode 197 transcript Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. And today we’re back. It’s been a while since we’ve done one of these, but this was a really wonderful opportunity to chat with a lovely listener and reader. I would love to introduce you to Katie. She hails from Indianapolis; I almost said Minneapolis. Katie: Indianapolis. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Indianapolis. And we’re going to do a reverse interview. So the way that these interviews work is Katie has written in with a wonderful question, or set of questions, and instead of politely answering her via email, {laughs} I asked her if she would come on the podcast and we could have a conversation because I really think that what we might talk about today would resonate with a lot of folks. So welcome to the show, Katie. Katie: Thank you for having me! I’m so excited to be here. Cassy Joy: Thank you so much for making the time to come on. I know you’ve got a lot going on right now. So we will cut into it. Do you mind sharing a little bit more about yourself with all of our listeners? And then we can get into the discussion and maybe some questions you’ve got. Katie: Sure. I’m a 34-year-old first time mom. I have a son named Clay who is about 10.5-months old. I live in Indianapolis with my husband of 2.5 years, Chris. And our two dogs; our two puppy children. I worked for Target Headquarters up in Minneapolis for about 7 years out of college, and I moved back to Indi, where I’m from, to work for a small digital marketing start up for the last four to five years. And after having my baby, I transitioned to working part time. And I definitely wrote in with a question that I thought could, like you said, resonate with some of your other listeners. But after having my baby, essentially I’m struggling with what I think is a weight loss plateau. But along with that, some body image and confidence issues. I do definitely want to start with this is not the world’s biggest problem. And I totally recognize that. I feel beyond blessed in my life. But this has been kind of a mental struggle for me. Being tired postpartum, period. I know a lot of people are dealing with a lot more serious things going on, or possibly even infertility, or other issues like that. So I don’t want to downplay any of those with nutrition or weight loss conversation. But it’s definitely been something that I’ve struggled mentally with that I wanted to reach out and see if you had any advice on. Cassy Joy: I’m glad you reached out. And I’m glad you kind of started the conversation by addressing that. Because I think that folks who are blessed with healthy babies, healthy pregnancies, it’s an incredible blessing. And that also doesn’t make your experiences less than. Or less worthy than. In whatever state you're in. So I think that’s really wonderful, and I’m glad that we are having this conversation. Tell me a little bit more about yourself, your pregnancy, your journey in the last 10 months. Are you still breastfeeding? Or if not, did you? Just kind of some of those things that might play into our conversation. Katie: Yeah.

So that’s kind of where the interior design aspect of my background started, was all through college and graduate school. And honestly, I was not interested in anything eco-friendly, environmental, because my whole drive behind design school was to graduate and start designing hotels. We’re speaking with Dr. Jess Peatross. Dr. Jess Peatross: Hi! Yeah, you got it. Cassy Joy: {laughs} I even asked her before we started the show how to say it, and then I immediately forgot. So, just I’ll tell you a little bit about her, and then I would love for Dr. Jess to share a little bit more about herself. Dr. Jess would love to help you heal on every level through inspiration, knowledge, movement, nutrition, and a multi-disciplinary approach. Which means, you are a bird of this feather, Dr. Jess, because that is definitely what we talk about a lot on this show. And the community here can really wrap their heads around it. So welcome to the show! Dr. Jess Peatross: Well thanks for having me. That’s a really warm welcome. And yeah, it sounds like we’re all on the same wavelength as far as healing, taking charge, and being proactive with our health. So that’s my audience, for sure. Thank you guys for having me. I would love if you could share a little bit about what you do; maybe expand on that a little bit. A little bit about your background, and then I have some questions for you. Dr. Jess Peatross: Sure. So, I’m a conventional medical trained doctor. I’m board certified in internal medicine, until next year. I have to take my boards again, which is a looming cloud. But other than that, when I got out of residency, which was in Louisville, Kentucky, I really started to see, as a hospitalist, that patients really never healed.

I’m going to read you a little bit about her bio, so I can briefly introduce her. She can do a much better job of it, of course, and then we’ll jump into some really fun Q&A. Nicole has been a practicing OB/GYN in Abilene, Texas since 2011. She graduated medical school in 2004 from the University of North Texas Health Science Center. The Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is now an adjust clinical assistant professor for the UNTHSC. That’s a lot of letters. Dr. Nicole Bullock: I know! {laughing} Cassy Joy: {laughs} And recently finished a graduate certificate in lifestyle medicine. Also through the same program. She is truly passionate about women’s health. Is an active leader in her community. And feels that it is a privilege to give back to her hometown. She’s also been interviewed multiple times with Refinery 29 and the Strategist of New York Magazine. She wrote a guest blog for Diva Cup blog back in 2014, which is one of the things we’re talking about today that’s really been the most requested topic. And it is her goal for her patients to think better, feel better, and live better. She became obsessed with the Diva Cup around 2008-2009, and first contacted them in 2010 when she did the Susan G. Komen 3-day breast cancer walk. She sent an email through their contact link on their website, explaining that she was a huge fan of Diva Cup, and asked if they would sponsor her OB/GYN office team. They said no; but, they sent a few cups to give to patients, and she continued to drop the occasional note just to tell them how much they loved their product. A few years later Sophie asked her to write the blog post about vaginal health, which is what we’re going to talk about today. And that’s how she started her relationship with Sophie Zivku; did I say that right? Dr. Nicole Bullock: I think so. Cassy Joy: OH my gosh. That’s incredible, I got that right. Diva International Communications manager. Fun facts about Nicole; she teaches yoga. She loves CrossFit. She’s a nutrition nerd by hobby. Paleo for 10 years. It’s like we’re sisters. And she married her high school sweetheart. I met mine when I was 18, so almost close to high school. I was close. Welcome! That was such a wonderful intro. Thank you so much for sending it over. Welcome to the show, Nicole! Dr. Nicole Bullock: Thank you, Cassy! This will be so much fun. Cassy Joy: Oh my goodness. I’m so tickled. I’m looking forward to this conversation for a long time. I did a pretty good job, I feel like, of covering the bases. But is there anything else you’d like to tell folks about your background and really what inspired your interests in promoting true women’s wellness in this way? Dr. Nicole Bullock: I think I grew up with parents who were just always interested in overall health. My parents didn’t just run to the doctor or give us antibiotics. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. And we are back with another reverse interview. Today is going to be a really interesting conversation. I have personally been really looking forward to it. We are joined today by Erin. Let me tell you a little bit about Erin. She is a Packer fan, born and raised in the great state of Minnesota. She puts her teaching degree to good use working in youth ministry, coaching at a gym, and very recently becoming a Beautycounter consultant. Woop! This January, Erin and her husband welcomed the lovely Emma Joy into the world after a longer than hoped for journey to parenthood. Erin is passionate about understand how treating our bodies well physically, nutritionally, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, can bring us into more harmony with who we are created to be. Ooh, I’m so excited to talk with you today, Erin! Welcome to the show! Erin: Thanks for having me. I’m excited to chat. Cassy Joy: Oh my gosh, me too! She’s been so patient with me. We’ve gone back and forth and had to reschedule a couple of times. So I really appreciate you carving out some time. Ok, let’s jump right into it! These reverse interviews, I like to just hand the baton over. You’ve got the reins for the show. I know that we’re going to chat about one thing in particular, but if you want to share anything more about yourself, or dive in with any other questions. It’s all yours, girl. Erin: Yeah! I’m excited to chat today. It’s funny. I’ve been listening to this podcast, the Fed and Fit podcast for a while. And kind of seeing your stuff on Instagram. And I remember it was like the picture; your pregnancy announcement of Gus and the little bun in the actual oven. It was probably pretty soon after that I realized I was pregnant. And I was like; oh my gosh! This woman is very similar to me, only in Texas instead of Minnesota. So it’s been cool just to hear about and kind of follow along as we had this pregnancy journey on a very similar timeline. And actually, there was a reverse interview a couple of weeks ago where you talked about how you have some allegiance to the Packers, or whatever. And I was like; oh my gosh. That’s why we can be friends. Because the Packers are the best. Cassy Joy: {laughs} They are the best. Erin: Yeah. It’s funny, my 94-year-old grandmother; or she’s 95. I can’t remember. Is the reason I’m a Packers fan. So I’m technically, on my mom’s side, a first-generation Minnesotan. My mom was born in Wisconsin, my grandma is from Wisconsin. And my husband likes to say that she was a very good brain washer. So she got me on the Packers side young. Cassy Joy: That is so fun. I don’t know if you heard this in that show, but we don’t actually have any ties geographically. Erin: Right. But didn’t you say your dad bought shares for Christmas presents or something? Cassy Joy: Yes. Erin: Or did I make that up? Cassy Joy: Nope. You nailed it. That’s exactly it. In case y’all haven’t heard the story, my dad was blessed with three daughters. And he is just the perfect dad for three strong women. Because we still tossed the football. But I remember me and my sisters, we love college football. We’re all Texas A&M Aggies, and I can really get into some college football.

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. And I am especially excited about today’s episode. I’m chatting with dear friend, Liz Wolfe, about preconception best practices. I’m going to quickly introduce you to her, and then I’ll pass the baton off to Liz. Because she can talk about herself better than I can! {laughs} Liz Wolfe: {laughs} Cassy Joy: She is an author, podcaster, parent, and nutritional therapy practitioner who is passionate about real food, safe beauty, and healthy families. She’s the author of the Wallstreet Journal bestseller Eat the Yolks, The Purely Primal Skincare Guide, and she’s currently working, three years in, on a comprehensive program called Baby Making and Beyond. Which will give parents and parents to be everything they need to know how to thrive through fertility, pregnancy, and parenthood. Welcome to the show, Liz! Liz Wolfe: Thanks for having me! I’m glad we finally got this on the books and it’s working out beautifully so far. Cassy Joy: It is! I’m so excited. I think I probably started chatting with Liz about wanting to come on the show, and pick her brain on these topics, way before I conceived. {laughs} Liz Wolfe: {laughs} Cassy Joy: And now, we’re recording this podcast in advance so I’m not quite sure when it will air. But there’s a really good change we’ve got a little nugget on the ground by the time this is on the airwaves. Liz Wolfe: Oh my gosh. I can’t wait. I’m sure you can’t wait. Oh, did I tell you I put a little something-something special in the mail for you yesterday? Cassy Joy: You did?! Liz Wolfe: I did. I’m so excited for you to get it. Cassy Joy: Aww, that’s so nice. You're the best. Liz Wolfe: Well, it’s not really for you. It’s for the baby. Cassy Joy: It’s for the baby. Liz Wolfe: Yeah. Cassy Joy: That’s even better. I’m at that point now; so this is the week before Christmas. And my mom was asking, “What can I get you for Christmas?” I’m like, “Anything for the baby.” {laughs} Liz Wolfe: Yep. Yep. Cassy Joy: It’s like, I guess I’m officially a parent! Liz Wolfe: You are officially a parent. You do not matter anymore. And I mean that in the best way possible! {laughs} Cassy Joy: {laughs} I love it. I love it. Oh man. Ok.

Her name is Lauren, and she’s got a really wonderful story that I would love to share. It’s kind of like a reverse interview, except Lauren and I started chatting not so much about some questions she had but she wrote in and shared a little bit of her story. And I said; would you be willing to come on the podcast and talk about that? Because I really think that her story and her journey is going to encourage and comfort a lot of folks out there. So welcome to the show, Lauren! Lauren: Oh, thanks for having me! Cassy Joy: Thank you so much for coming on! Lauren, to tell you guys briefly about her. She is a nurse practitioner. Right? I didn’t write it down because I said I would remember, and now I’m doubting myself. Lauren: Yes, you're right. Cassy Joy: {laughs} She’s a nurse practitioner out of Houston, Texas, and is an absolute doll. Thank you so much for coming on and making time for us today. I would love it if you would tell us a little bit more about yourself. Maybe rewind the clock a little bit on your health journey. Lauren: Sure. So like you said, Cassy, my name is Lauren and I work as a nurse practitioner full time here in Houston. I have two little boys, a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old who keep me quite busy; my second full time job, I always say. And a wonderful, supportive husband who quite frankly I couldn’t do this journey without. So that’s a little bit of kind of who I am and where I’m coming from. I always think that’s important, because I think so often we always compare ourselves. And like; oh, I could never do something like this. I have a full-time job, or I’m a mom, or I stay at home with my kids and they’re in my hair all day. And I just want people to know, too, that The Project is so doable, even with super busy kind of crazy life. And maybe not having; I don’t just sit around all day and think about when I’m going to eat next and plan my workouts. You know? I think that’s important to know that it’s doable, no matter how busy your schedule is. Cassy Joy: Yeah. And I don’t want to interrupt you. Well, I’m going to interrupt you. I don’t want to. Lauren: Yeah, go ahead. {laughs} Cassy Joy: {laughing} But, just so you guys know if you're new listeners and you're not sure what she’s talking about. Madison Mayberry Hofmeyer: Well thanks so much for having me! I’m excited to talk. Cassy Joy: I am too! So I have to say, Madison and I are on the same larger Beautycounter team page, which is how the two of us connected. And I just always; you know, online, you don’t really know-know people. You kind of get a sense. But I always loved the things that you’ve said. You are always very well poised and encouraging. Especially in these large groups. And then, you and I got to spend some time together in person. I got to meet you in person at a Beautycounter incentive trip. I walked away from that trip, and I think I remember calling my husband. He was asking how it was going, and I had known several of the girls there who had been friends for years. I was like, “oh, it’s great. And there’s this girl Madison, and I just think she is the sweetest thing. And I want to be her real friend.” {laughing} Madison Mayberry Hofmeyer: Oh my gosh! I think I said something similar when I left. I said, “Cassy is even more likable, if it’s possible, in person than she is on her very likable Instagram stories.” {laughs} Cassy Joy: {laughs} That’s so funny! I love it. It was so great to spend some time with you. You are just such a wonderful soul. And I couldn’t wait to introduce you to everybody here. I highly encourage you guys to look up Madison. She’s always sharing wonderful, uplifting things. I know that’s what everybody’s in search of here. And you are in good hands with her. So thank you for coming on the show!

Well, I guess at this point, one of the nutrition consultants behind the brand Fed and Fit. Our team is growing, and it’s very exciting. And we’re back with another weekly Fed and Fit podcast episode. It’s a very fun, informal 30-minute show. I like to sprinkle in the occasional dive really deep into the weeds of scientific topics, nutrition science topics, like dairy 101 is one that I’m working on right now. I like to invite really wonderful guests to come on and share their experience. And on that note, today is kind of in line with that. I like to do the occasional reverse interview, which is where a Fed and Fit listener/reader writes in with a wonderful question, and instead of giving them exactly what they want, which is an email response. Or however they reached out to me; whether it was through messaging or something. I ask them if they’d be willing to come on to my podcast to record our conversation with the hopes that it resonates with more folks out there. More of you that are listening. So today is just exactly one of those occasions. I’m really excited to welcome Haven onto the show today. Haven lives up in Victoria, British Columbia. Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I’m very excited about today’s episode. I’m welcoming one of my nutrition heroes to the show today. His name is Robb Wolf. You’ve probably heard of him. He’s a former research biochemist, a health expert, and author of the New York Times’ bestseller, The Paleo Solution; and, his brand new book, Wired to Eat. He has been a review editor for the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, and Journal of Evolutionary Health. He serves on the board of directors of Specialty Medical Clinic in Reno, Nevada. And is a consultant for the Naval Special Welfare Resilience program. Wolf is also a former California state powerlifting champion, and holds the rank of blue belt in Brazilian Ju-Jitsu. I hope I said that right. I always mispronounce Ju-Jitsu. Robb Wolf: Yep. Cassy Joy: He lives in Reno, Nevada with his wife Nikki, and daughters Zoe and Sagan. Welcome to the show, Robb! Robb Wolf: Huge honor to be here. I always feel like I should be taller than 5’9” with a bio like that, so thank you. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Oh, well you are larger than life. That’s definitely for sure. Thank you so much for coming on. I think Diane said it best, Diane Sanfilippo, when your book first came out. She said something along the lines of, “I’m so excited, it’s been a long time, I can’t wait to see what else you have to teach us.” And that really is how I look to all of your work. I’ve heard you speak several times, and it’s one of those where I furiously take mental notes. So thank you so much for making time. I would love it if you would just share with folks. The Paleo Solution came out in 2010. And I still have memories. I’ve been following a paleo template since about, the past 8 to 9 years. And your book was one of the very first out there. I’m sure you hear that all the time. But it really was influential. So what have you been up to since then, aside from all the research and work that has gone into Wired to Eat?

I’ve been looking forward to this particular episode for weeks. Because, I’m joined by one of our Fed and Fit Project members. Her name is Alyssa. She is from Seattle, Washington. And a really fun fact about her; she got married in college. Which is so cool! When you know, you know. Alyssa: You totally know. {laughs} Cassy Joy: {laughs} Love it! So, Alyssa is, at this point I’m going to go ahead and call you a veteran Project member. {laughs} Alyssa: {laughs} Well thanks. Cassy Joy: Oh, yeah. Thank you. When did you join the project? Alyssa: I officially joined in February. With the February month. Cassy Joy: Ok, got it. With the February group. So she joined in February, and she’s been really submerged in the material, in the community group, and everything. And just been doing such a great job. And we really wanted to bring somebody on so you could hear about the project from her eyes. So I’ve just got some questions for her, but I’m excited to learn from her. And that’s kind of the fun part about the Project, and the community. Everybody has their own takeaways that they pull from stuff. And there’s always something you could learn at every turn and every corner. So, to kick things off, I would love to hear straight from Alyssa; why did you decide to join the Fed and Fit Project? Oh, and I guess should introduce. For new listeners here, who are not familiar. The Fed and Fit Project online is the food and fitness program online that mirrors what’s found in the Fed and Fit book. And they are gracious enough to accept my invitation to come on; and we just like to have a nice little conversation. And I choose these folks; or invite these certain folks to come on because if you’re new here, just to give you a little background information on these reverse interviews, because I find that there are many questions that are asked that can lead down a rabbit hole that’s a common question. So that’s exactly what we’re doing today. I am joined by the lovely Ms. Kim. She is calling in from near San Francisco, California; a small town outside of there. she is a stay at home mom with what sounds like really good kids, two and four years old, and I’m so excited to have you on the show today, Kim! Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. Today I’m joined by a very special guest; we’re going to talk about a very interesting topic. His name is Walid Abdul-Waham, and he is the pointy tip of the spear when it comes to bringing camel milk available to markets. I’m going to tell you a little bit about Walid, and then I will allow him to introduce himself more thoroughly. So a little bit of his back-story that I know if, is he was visiting his family in his home town of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, looking for raw milk. He was approached by a friend with a plastic bag of camel milk, of all things. Then he quickly realized camel’s milk was being used medicinally in the Middle East and the US for complex health problems. We’re going to learn all about that. When Walid moved to California, he appreciated how people valued a healthy lifestyle. He realized that this was the perfect place to start a camel milk company. After selling camel milk at mosques and ethnic food festivals, Walid’s business plan won the Marcia Israel award; did I say that correct, Walid? Walid Abdul-Waham: That’s right, yeah. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Yes! Nailed it. From USC. So he decided to leave his corporate real estate position and begin his camel adventure. Having made the big commitment, he went courting the world trying to spark camel milk revolution, and found the greatest and most friendly people. While looking for US camel herders in the Midwest, he came across a group known for being polite and down to earth. A group who didn’t exist in the Middle East; the wonderful Amish community, who exemplify hard work and cooperation. Watching them work together was and remains awesome to Walid. Walid felt that they deserved an easier way to bring their product to market, and he loves the quality of their camel milk. Welcome to the show, Walid! Walid Abdul-Waham: Thanks a lot, Cassy for having me. Cassy Joy: OH my goodness, it is my pleasure. And I’m so excited to chat with you today. I told Walid I have all kinds of questions for him; probably a lot of the questions the listeners are thinking right now. {laughs} But before we get into those, I would love for you to fill in the gaps.

Episode 90 Transcription On today’s episode; Kristen Boehmer of Living Loving Paleo joins me to talk about her journey with Crohn’s disease; and how she took back her life with diet and mindset. Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. Today I’m joined by one of the most lovely young women I’ve had the pleasure of knowing professionally; we got to hang out a little bit this past summer. She really is incredibly genuine. She’s this light, bubbly, positive person, and I’m so excited to introduce Kristen Boehmer to you guys today. She’s the founder and creator of Living Loving Paleo; and from her own experience, is a true believer that food can be a powerful medicine. She was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at the age of 12, and then after spending far too many years in and out of the hospitals, and ultimately having her entire large intestine removed in 2011, she took back control of her own life by completely changing her diet and mindset. Her biggest mission is to share her story and knowledge with the world, as so many are needlessly suffering just like she once was. Kristen is here to show you how she believes that creating a positive mindset in eating real food has the ability to change your entire life. Welcome to the show, Kristen! Kristen Boehmer: That was the sweetest introduction ever; thank you Cassy! Cassy Joy: {laughs} Kristen Boehmer: I feel the same about you. Cassy Joy: Oh, you’re too kind. Kristen Boehmer: I mean it. Cassy Joy: I mean, really, I guess; we’ve kind of just touched back and forth online and social media for years. And I’ve admired the content you’ve put out there, and you really are truly positive and your genuine spirit comes across in all of your posts, so I’ve always been a fan. Kristen Boehmer: Thank you. Cassy Joy: And then I got to meet you, and your awesome husband. Kristen Boehmer: {laughs} That was so fun. Cassy Joy: It was so fun! This past summer we were in San Francisco for a book tour stop, and we got to spend some time together. I really did walk away knowing that I’d found a real friend, and a real; I don’t know, connection with another person from the internet. I’m just so excited. And I’m excited to introduce you to the Fed and Fit people. {laughs} Kristen Boehmer: Aww, thank you! I feel the exact same about you. When I came across you years ago, it was your positivity that just shined through your posts, and I was just instantly drawn to you. So thanks for being you. Cassy Joy: Oh my gosh; let’s just high five! {laughs} Kristen Boehmer: I know! {laughs} Cassy Joy: Across a couple of time zones. Well, you really do have a truly incredible blog. All of your work; I’ve always been impressed by it. What’s the one piece of your job now that you enjoy most? What’s the one thing you really enjoy most about Living Loving Paleo? Kristen Boehmer: Ooh. Man. There’s so much. Cassy Joy: I really love blindsiding you. Kristen Boehmer: What was that? Cassy Joy: I’m blindsiding you with questions. She spent her early college years medicated and in a fog, until she discovered the autoimmune-gut connection, and everything changed after that point. After her diet changed, lifestyle, and targeting her gut health, she lives a drastically different life, free of debilitating Hashimoto’s and digestive symptoms. Michelle works one on one as a nutritional therapy practitioner; an NTP, and blogs about gut healing, living with Hashimoto’s, and autoimmune friendly paleo recipes at her blog, www.UnboundWellness.com. This January, she is releasing the 30-day gut healing diet plan and guide, which is designed to lead you on your own gut healing journey, just like she did to address her Hashimoto’s. Welcome to the show, Michelle! Michelle Hoover: Thank you so much, Cassy. I’m so excited to be here. Cassy Joy: Oh, I’m so excited to have you here. When Michelle emailed me and told me a little bit about herself, I really felt compelled to invite her immediately onto the show, because we’ve never; or have not ever, in the last 80-plus episodes, covered Hashimoto’s specifically. And I know it is probably one of the most prevalent autoimmune diseases afflicting more folks than any other, and I really wanted to bring you on because you have such a beautiful success story, you’ve got such a really good head on your shoulders and perspective, and I wanted folks to be able to hear from your firsthand how you’ve really confronted things head first. But yeah welcome to the show! Is there anything that I missed in your bio that you’d like to share in additional? In addition to that? {laughs} Michelle Hoover: {laughs} I think those are the things. If you hear any tiny pony galloping in the background it’s my cat, Stinky. Cassy Joy: {gasp} Cat Stinky! I was really hoping you were going to say, “If you hear any tiny pony galloping, it’s my tiny pony.” {laughs} Michelle Hoover: {laughs} He sounds like a tiny pony. He like gallops; it’s weird. So if you hear that, it’s my cat. {laughs} Cassy Joy: Ohh, Stinky, that’s so cute. If you hear a Clydesdale galloping, it’s my dog Gus. {laughing} The opposite of tiny pony. He’s a big pony {laughs}. Oh man. Well this is great. I’m really excited to chat with you. So can you share a little bit more about; you were diagnosed at 17. Michelle Hoover: Yeah.

About Cassy Joy: When asked what she believes is her mission on this Earth, she replies, “I strive to empathize with people.  I thrive when I connect with others in order to nurture them in a way that helps them feel that they are not alone in this world.” This is Cassy Joy Garcia.  Optimistic. Determined. Encouraging. Author. Nutritionist. Self-Motivator. Cassy Joy Garcia is an inspiration to many and has quite a lot on her plate (pun intended). Between her first book, 'Fed & Fit', a weekly 30-minute Fed & Fit podcast, and her healthy lifestyle blog FedandFit.com, Cassy’s achievements didn’t rapidly appear out of thin air; they are a result of a tireless journey down windy roads with arduous speed bumps.  Her personal journey has taken hard work, motivation and perseverance. This is her story. Cassy, a 30-year-old native San Antonian, grew up in a loving family with three sisters and caring parents who cooked home-cooked meals, which gave them strength and nourishment needed to fuel non-stop teenage girls. As she entered college and lived on her own, Cassy’s classes and social activities kept her so busy that she forgot to eat.  She was becoming noticeably thinner and continued to eat less because her appearance mirrored a healthy lifestyle.  Cassy was borderline anorexic and her family was getting concerned. When she turned 21, her weight yo-yoed and shot in the opposite direction. She was drinking beer, eating pizza and potato skins and just about anything a college student could muster to afford. Her weight gain contributed to a negative body image, and she could barely get through her classes without falling asleep. So Cassy started the crash diet circuit over the next few years, tackling Atkins, South Beach, Low Calorie, Low Fat.  She even attempted Veganism.  None of these techniques lasted long and she always found herself gaining weight a short time after each diet concluded.  She was depressed and fatigued, and preferred the couch to the gym. It got to the point where Cassy felt like she was living in someone else’s body.  She could barely recognize her physical and emotional self.  She was finally ready for a change. When Cassy first attempted Paleo, it was to look skinnier - to fit in those smaller jeans tucked away in the corner of her closet.  She was proud of herself for stepping out of her comfort zone, but it was hard and she wanted to throw in the towel countless times. It wasn’t until she was actually feeling better that made her realize the driving force behind her ultimate life change was a rejuvenation of her confidence, energy and self-esteem.  That was more important. Once she started feeling better, her newfound Paleo lifestyle became easier, almost second nature. Her unhealthy body image washed away, she slept better, and she could drive a car without struggling to stay awake. Cassy took what she learned firsthand from her health challenges, put in years of research, and is now giving back to those who she hopes can realize that they can do it too.   She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree, and is a nutrition consultant and an expert in the kitchen with over 400 nutritious recipes in her arsenal.  She created her website FedandFit.com to empower healthy lifestyle transformations through clear nutrition science and delicious Paleo-friendly foods.  It brings Cassy joy to interact with others that face the same struggles that she too endured.  Cassy calls her site “home”. Cassy‘s first book 'Fed & Fit: A 28-Day Food & Fitness Plan to Jumpstart Your Life With Over 175 Squeaky-Clean Paleo Recipes', published Summer 2016 (Victory Belt). 'Fed & Fit' features 190 of her grain-free, dairy-free and artificial-ingredient-free recipes spanning every meal of the day, from frittatas, salads and casseroles to slower cooker favorites. Cassy wanted 'Fed & Fit' to transcend the traditional cookbook and offer readers a roadmap to wellness. She opens the book with a discussion of her "Four Pillars of Health" (Mindset, Sleep/Hydration, Food and Fitness) and goes on to offer tips on portion control and meal prep with an actionable 28-day food and fitness plan for getting healthy. Cassy even enlisted New York Times bestselling author and fitness coach Juli Bauer to contribute workouts to the plan.

Episode 86 Links Check out Roxanne's blog, Glass of Glam, HERE! Episode 86 Transcription On today’s episode, we’re jumping into another reverse interview where reader Roxanne asks me some of her questions. We’re going to talk about paleo-friendly forms of birth control, and then we’re also going to talk about how to get that classic paleo glow. Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast! Today I am joined by Roxanne, who is in D.C.; Washington D.C. and today is another one of those special episodes where a listener/reader wrote in with a bunch of really good questions, and I wanted to invite her on the show to ask them while we recorded our conversation {laughs}. Because I figured the answers to her question, and probably the conversation that will evolve over the next 30 minutes could be of benefit to more than just Roxanne. We really feel like it could be of benefit to a bunch of you guys out there. So I hope you enjoy today’s call; I have no idea what questions she’s going to ask me, {laughs} so I haven’t prepared. But I’m going to roll with it and it’s going to be a lot of fun. Thanks for coming on the show Roxanne! Roxanne: Hey, Cassy, thank you so much for having me. Cassy Joy: Oh my gosh. The pleasure is mine! Roxanne: {laughs} Cassy Joy: I’m so excited about this! It’s just, I don’t like to leave emails unanswered, I don’t like to leave questions unanswered, and every once in a while; you know, I don’t know, somebody asks really good questions, and I think to myself; gosh, I either want to copy and paste this and make it into a blog post, which I never do because that’s work. Roxanne: {laughs} Cassy Joy: {laughs} Or, and then this idea came up. I haven’t decided what we’re calling these yet. By now I’ve probably decided and I said it in the intro; but I don’t know if I’m going to call them reverse interviews, you know, where you guys come on and interview me, or a live coaching call. I don’t know; we’ll play with it. We’ll figure it out. Roxanne: I love it. Cassy Joy: Anyways, I’m going to; I told Roxanne before I started recording, but what I’m going to do is I’m just going to pass the virtual baton all the way over to her, from Texas to D.C., and let her ask whatever questions she’s got for me. I know she has a fashion blog, so I’m sure some of her questions are going to be related to that. Her website, if you’re curious about Roxanne, is www.glassofglam.com, she told me before the show. I haven’t looked it up yet but I think it’s a really, really clever name, so congratulations on that. Roxanne: {laughs} Thank you. Cassy Joy: Of course. Well, ask away Roxanne, I’m here for you. Roxanne: Thank you, Cassy. Well, ok. I started eating paleo in about May of this year, and it’s been awesome. It’s been life changing, like it’s the greatest thing I’ve ever done for myself and my body. Cassy Joy: Awesome. Roxanne: But, I've been struggling lately with acne, and no matter how much I exercise, how much I eat right with paleo, drink water, I feel like I’m always bloated and I just can’t get that glow that so many paleo women have achieved; you know, you and Diane Sanfilippo have. And I really want that. And part of that is because I have my fashion blog, www.glassofglam.com, which is supposed to be about feeling good and feeling confident. But if I don’t feel that way, then I don’t know if my readers would actually feel confident feeling that way either. So I think it could be an IUD,

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. Today, I’m thrilled to bring you yet another reader; or listener, I guess we should say, reverse interview. These reverse interviews, of course, are when Fed and Fit listeners write in with really great questions, and I invite them to come on a phone with me! We record the call, they ask me their awesome questions, we get to have a really fun conversation, and then publish it to the podcast with the hopes that other folks out there listening; either they have the same questions and they can definitely benefit from this conversation we’re going to have, or maybe it brings up some things that some of you guys have never thought of before. So I’m really excited today to welcome the lovely Allie. She lives in Ames, Iowa, and she is a graduate student there studying student affairs and higher education, which is really cool, because that is actually my youngest sister, Samantha; that’s exactly what she got her graduate degree in, as well. Allie, I believe you said that you listened to that Fed and Fit college student mini-series we did here on the podcast a while ago. But it’s definitely a passion project of mine; I love working with higher education students, so welcome to the show! I cannot wait to jump into all your questions. Allie: Thank you! I’m so excited to be here. I’m excited as well. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Awesome! Well, what’s on your mind, girl? Is there anything you want to share with folks before we jump into some of the things you’ve got jotted down? Allie: Yeah, definitely. So, I’ll just touch on a little bit of a background of how I got these questions, because otherwise they don’t make a lot of sense of where I’m starting from. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Awesome. Allie: So, I grew up definitely a healthy lifestyle; my mom was a marathoner, my dad was a weight lifter. So they were definitely in the fitness realm, kind of always eating healthy awareness. But I was very unreceptive to it; of course, like a typical little kid, I feel like I was that rebel child who didn’t want to believe what mom and dad were saying.

Today kicks off the very first Reverse Interview where I invite Fed & Fit readers who've written in with questions to come ask them on the show! Connect at: Episode 80 Transcription Today we’re kicking off the very first Fed and Fit reverse interview, where I invite readers to dial in and ask their questions on the line. Today we’ve got Tara, who talks about; we chat about healthy desserts, nut butters (if they’re healthy or not), thirst instead of hunger, interpreting those cues, transitioning from a diet to a lifestyle, when is gluten really worth it; and then why white rice over brown rice? Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. Today is an extra special episode, because we’re doing something totally different than what you have seen before on this show, and maybe on some other shows. So let me give you some background information before I introduce our very special guest. Every once in a while, folks will send me an email or they’ll comment on social media, whether it’s Instagram or Facebook, or even Snapchat. Gosh I love Snapchat because I can have conversations with people. And I love answering questions, and I love giving everybody, I guess just the answers that they’re looking for, or at least some direction or some reassurance. And it dawned on me that they can’t be the only ones with these questions. And that’s often true; if you have a question, sometimes people feel silly asking questions, and I always try to remind people, there’s no such thing as a dumb question, and you are definitely not the only one with those questions. So I thought; what would be a cool way that I could help answer these questions for these wonderful people in a way that may help and benefit more folks? So I got to thinking about it, and it’s something that I’ve thought about for a while, about maybe doing some sort of a reverse interview on the Fed and Fit podcast, where I invite people who email me with excellent questions, and I invite them on the show to essentially interview me. They get to ask all their questions, tell a little bit about themselves, and hopefully we can have a dialogue. This may turn into a mini; I don’t know if it’s going to be a mini nutrition coaching, or business coaching, or just overall healthy lifestyle coaching, but whatever it is, it would be fun to have a quick conversation, get it on record with these wonderful people. And I’m so excited to kick it off today with a lovely lady named Tara. She is joining us today, and I’m going to go ahead and turn it over to her to tell us a little bit about herself, and then the show is yours girl. I’m going to let you lead it wherever you want to go, and I am here to just chit chat and answer any of your questions. Take it away! {laughs} Tara: {laughs} Thanks Cassy. Awesome; I’m excited. This is, I think, a really cool step you're taking. I have so many questions; I feel like some are going to be silly, some might be a short answer, some might lead into more questions, but before I jump in; yes, my name is Tara, and I live in Seattle, Washington. Surprise, surprise, I work for Amazon. We have a lot of Amazonians here in the city, but I really enjoy it despite our grey skies and clouds and rains. But it doesn’t rain as much as you think. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Tara: {laughs} I am really inspired by just all of the paleo bloggers and just that lifestyle, living that way. Cassy I think I was listening to your podcast about which pots and pans to be using,

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to the Fed and Fit podcast! I’m thrilled today to have not just one, but two awesome ladies on the show today; Mickey Trescott and Angie Alt. Mickey is an NTP, Angie is an NTC and CHC; {laughs} I’ll tell you what all of that is in just a second. I’m really excited to have them both on. First, I’ll tell you about Mickey. Mickey is a nutritional therapy practitioner; that’s what the NTP stands for; chef, blogger, and author of the Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook. She’s the creator of AIP Batch cook; a video based cooking program that teaches users how to prepare allergen free meals in their own home. Very, very cool stuff. She teaches cooking classes online and at seminars across the country, as well as at Bastyr University; I hope I said that right. I’m an Aggie. {laughs} We’re kind of… Mickey Trescott: Yeah, no, you totally got it. Cassy Joy: I nailed it? Awesome. Sometimes I feel like I’m tucked into my Texas bubble very tightly. Mickey is on the board of directors for Hashimoto’s Awareness, an advocacy organization for suffers of Hashimoto’s disease, and in 2012, Mickey founded Autoimmunepaleo.com; a website with recipes and resources for those suffering from autoimmune diseases. She lives in Willamette Valley, Oregon. Did I say that one right, too, Mickey? Mickey Trescott: Willamette. Close! Cassy Joy: {laughs} Oh man. Did I say it like Siri says it? {laughs} Mickey Trescott: Oh, I think you did better than Siri, actually. Cassy Joy: Awesome. Ok, I’m going to tell you guys about Angie. Angie is a nutritional therapy consultant; that’s what the NTC stands for; and a certified health coach; the CHC. She’s also the author of the Alternative Autoimmune Cookbook, a recipe and guidebook for the autoimmune protocol. She is the creator of SAD and AIP in 6, an online coaching program that has helped over 1000 members on the path to wellness; very cool; teaching them how to transition their diets and lifestyle over a 6-week period. In 2015, Angie became a partner at Autoimmunepaleo.com, and she lives in Washington, D.C. Welcome, Angie! Angie Alt: Thanks! It’s nice to be here. Cassy Joy: Oh, it’s nice to have you girls here. Well I’m going to pass the baton off. Those were really lovely bios, and gave a nice introduction, but I would love it if y’all could share a little bit more about your stories, and about this latest project that you girls are working on. Mickey Trescott: Yeah, so Mickey here, I’ll go first. And you know, my journey really started like a lot of us who come to paleo, come to all these health modifications, diet modifications, the autoimmune protocol, with a personal health issue. So I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and Celiac disease about 5 years ago now after suffering for about a year, which in the scheme of things isn’t very long; but it was a pretty bad year. And I kept going to the doctor and trying to figure out what was wrong, and there were kind of two parts to my story. One part was not really getting what I needed from the medical community; so, going to the doctor and being told that there was nothing wrong,

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast! This is a unique recording {laughs} but you’ve got to do what it takes when you're on the road. Diane and I are sitting here in the backseat of our wonderful Uber driver’s car in Chicago; we just landed! Diane Sanfilippo: Yes we are. In some beautiful rush hour traffic. Cassy Joy: {laughs} I think we’ve got a little ways before we get to our destination, so we figured we’d dial in, and now that we’re two weeks into this three week-long book signing tour, Diane for Practical Paleo second edition, which you can get in a hardcover or paperback; though we recommend the hardcover. Diane Sanfilippo: We do. Cassy Joy: {laughing} Pro tip; get the hardcover. {laughs} Diane Sanfilippo: It travels better. Cassy Joy: It travels better, exactly. And then me, for my Fed and Fit book. So we’re really excited; we have a signing in Skokie today when this episode airs on Tuesday. And yeah, so it’s been a really fun trip. But a couple of weeks on the road, and you get pretty good at figuring out how to make travel less stressful. So that’s what we want to talk to you guys about today, is really how to make travel less stressful. There are some tips and tricks; Diane is definitely a seasoned veteran, and I’ve been a very coachable student. {laughs} in a lot of these tips, and it really has made a huge difference, some of these things we’re going to talk about today. Both general travel tips, and then also with regard to food and overall health. So let’s go ahead and get into it! Alright. So our general tips to start off; first one we talk about is take Uber. Diane Sanfilippo: Take Uber. Yeah. So a lot of times when you travel, you can rent a car and this is not sponsored, by the way. Cassy Joy: No {laughs}. Diane Sanfilippo: You can rent a car, but first of all sometimes renting a car is totally affordable, but sometimes it’s crazy expensive. It can be over $100 a day to rent a car, and if you just take an Uber a few times a day, you probably won’t spend that much. And also, I don’t know about everybody else, but if I get in a car in a new city, I don’t have my little holder for my phone in the car, and I’m trying to map around and just drive around and navigate the traffic and all of that; and it’s just so much easier to just go sit in a car, and someone else is going to drive, and you can check your map and see where you’re going and figure things out. So, I love to just leave that to somebody else. Basically; oh, that’s my phone. Basically, you’re delegating. You’re delegating the driving, you know? Cassy Joy: That’s true. I mean, it really is the concept; one way to destress in general is to delegate more tasks. Plus, you don’t have to worry about parking logistics. Diane Sanfilippo: And being in traffic or worrying that; yeah, I just think driving in new cities can be really challenging in general. Cassy Joy: Mm-hmm. Totally. Diane Sanfilippo: I’ve gotten lost many times. Cassy Joy: {laughs}

We talk about how her discovery of a real food lifestyle rescued her from years of pain; her whirlwind adventure that led to the opening of her food truck; her vision for the restaurant, and some really great advice for entrepreneurs. Cassy Joy: Today I am joined; I am so excited for you guys to meet this lovely woman. Her name is Naomi Seifter, and she is just a ball of joy and light. She’s the ouner; {laughs} ouner. Naomi Seifter: {laughs} Cassy Joy: Founder and owner, I’m going with it {laughs} of Picnik. Picnik began in 2013 as a food trailer housed in a repurposed shipping container off South Lamar in Austin, Texas. Naomi has a personal history of combating food allergies since childhood, which has led her journey to open the gluten-free food trailer known for the grab and go breakfasts and lunch items, as well as the buttered coffees, which I’ve consumed many of {laughs}. Naomi Seifter: {laughs} Cassy Joy: Bone broths, juices, and all with the focus on sourcing locally and using organic ingredients. The brick and mortar location of Picnik just opened on August 10th, and I was lucky enough to attend a really fun tasting dinner, so now I can even more emphatically tell you that this lady is killing it! Naomi Seifter: Awww. I really am just genuinely thrilled for you. You really are; you know, folks, I do get asked quite often. I’m sure a lot of cookbook authors and bloggers are asked; ooh, did you ever want to open a restaurant. I was like, oh my gosh, I don’t think I have it in me {laughs}.That’s a lot of work. Naomi Seifter: It is a lot. It’s a lot. I mean, we get approached by people all the time who are like; oh, I really want to create my own concept, I’m interested in doing something similar. And I mean, I will be the first to tell you, it is a full time, 100% of your time job, day in day out, 7 days a week. Cassy Joy: Mmm. I believe it. Well you do it really, really well. Naomi Seifter: Well thanks! Cassy Joy: Keep it up. And I’d love for you to share; before we jump in I want to talk a lot about Picnik and pick your brain on all things foodie wise; but tell us a little bit more about your story. I very briefly touched on it, but I’d love to know what led you to this lifestyle and to doing what you’re doing now. Naomi Seifter: Yeah, absolutely. So you know, I was one of these kids who was; basically I was sick my whole life, and my parents were both doctors, and somehow no one ever connected the dots that maybe my sickness was related to what I was eating. Like the other day, I was watching a video of me when I was a kid; I must have been 4 or 5, and it was on Thanksgiving,

Cassy Joy: Today I’m joined by an absolutely wonderful woman who has made an incredible impact on the world with her numerous successful paleo-friendly books, such as the runaway New York Times’ bestseller Practical Paleo; her blog, podcasts, always fresh social media outlets, and healing nutrition focus program such as the 21-Day Sugar Detox. She’s constantly producing top notch content, and has been a leader in our industry for the last several years. She’s got an enormous heart, and I’m beyond honored to call her a friend and mentor. Today we’re going to talk about her Practical Paleo second edition, and we’ll cover some of the questions you submitted; welcome to the show Diane Sanfilippo! Diane Sanfilippo: Hello! {laughs} Cassy Joy: {laughs} Diane Sanfilippo: Thanks for having me. I like that I can see you, because you’re giving a little “ole dance” to my welcome. Cassy Joy: {laughing} I do, it’s Oprah style and nobody can ever really see it. Diane Sanfilippo: {laughs} That’s awesome. Yeah, I’m excited to chat with you. Cassy Joy: Me too! I know that readers; listeners are going to be really excited to hear from you. Just in general, but especially about this new project, this new book that’s coming out. Practical Paleo is really one of the most acclaimed books in paleo, gluten free, etc. I’m going there. I’m giving it all the titles! Diane Sanfilippo: They should see the faces I make; like “oh no!” Cassy Joy: {laughs} Oh, it really has been. But with all things, content evolves, and you’re getting ready to release the new and expanded version of Practical Paleo. I would love to hear from you; what differences are you most excited about to really share with the world? Diane Sanfilippo: Ok, so I’m going to start with the superficial stuff, just because I’m holding my first copy right now, and first and foremost because this is what everyone will see when they first look at the book, is that we’re releasing it in a hard cover as well as a soft cover. So, for the people who’ve had the book for a long time, they’re like, “Yes! Finally!” Cassy Joy: {laughs} Diane Sanfilippo: And I’m like, yes! But you know, a lot of people use it as a reference. As you know, only about a third or a little more than a third of the book is recipes, which is still a ton of recipes. It’s over 150 recipes now, which is a lot more than I had before. But you’re flipping through it constantly, it kind of reads and works like a textbook, so the soft cover is fine, there’s nothing wrong with it. There’s a new soft cover edition as well and it’s $10 less on the cover price, so that’s definitely accessible for a lot of people. But the hardcover just feels really special to me. So that, first and foremost. And then second, the photography in the book; I’ve reshot almost all of the recipes; Bill Staley reshot about 15 of the recipes that; I can’t even talk. They were originally all shot by him. I worked with him, stayed at their house for a while, working on all of the recipes. So I had made and styled all the food originally but he shot the p...

So they probably know. Cassy Joy: I hope they know. I hope they know that I mean it. And then of course I’ve got friends and family who say they just can’t handle that kind of energy. I just went to New York, right, for this really mini press tour just to meet with some folks, and Kimberly, my sister went with me, and we roomed together in the hotel room, and Kimberly, Juli’s met Kimberly, my sister; she’s the country music singer. And she’s got a lot of energy {laughs} but Kimberly, by the end of the trip; she looked at me and she’s like, “Cassy, you just keep being you, because I don’t understand why you’re so happy when you wake up, but it makes me want to be happy.” Which is great, because Kimberly’s got; I don’t know, she’s like this little shiny; bright shining star, I feel like. Juli Bauer: Gosh, she has so much energy. Cassy Joy: She is. She’s a performer, she can really turn it on. It’s awesome. Juli Bauer: Yeah she can! Cassy Joy: Anyway, sorry. I digress. I’m so excited to have you on her. And just to give you guys some background, you probably heard a buzz about Juli and I working together. She’s sharing her thoughts on how you can protect your business from the very beginning, when to determine if you need to consult with a lawyer, and what is and what isn’t ok when it comes to sharing digital content. Cassy Joy: And we’re back with another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I’m so excited about today’s interview. We’re talking to one of the most lovely, vivacious, wonderful, smartest gals I know. {laughs} Kristen Roberts: Oh my gosh, I have so much to live up to! {laughs} Cassy Joy: {laughing} Her name is Kristen Roberts. She is the founder and managing attorney of Trestle law. Trestle Law focuses on intellectual property, business and employment services for socially conscious and socially responsible businesses. I’m really excited to be here. It’s going to be a lot of fun today. Cassy Joy: I know. We’re going to have a good time. We’ve got some good questions lined up. Kristen has a wealth of information. I don’t know how much; I’ve talked to her on so many things over the years. I guess we’ve known each other about a year now, haven’t we? Kristen Roberts: Yeah. I feel like we really got to know each other at last PaleoFx, right? Cassy Joy: We did. That’s right. We had great conversations there, and she’s just given me really, really solid advice over the years. She works with a number of my colleagues in the industry; a lot of other bloggers, and then of course her business expands much past that. If you’re a business owner looking for help in the law sector, I highly recommend her. I trust her, and she does amazing work. Anyways, I’m excited to have her on the show today. We’re going to talk about; really, we’re going to zoom in on what to do to protect your business from the beginning, when do you need a lawyer, and then also talk about sharing information in the digital age, kind of as a mini-PSA. In this blogging world, so much information is online. When is it ok to share someone else’s information, when is not ok. And then what you can do to not only protect yourself, but what do you do if your content is borrowed. So I just think those are good grounds to cover. But before we get into all of that, I would love to pass the baton over to Kristen. Tell us a little bit more about yourself, more about your business, and maybe what are some of the favorite parts of your job. Kristen Roberts: Well sure, I don’t mind telling you about my job. Lawyering is, I would say, it’s a lot more just client management and really setting client expectations appropriately and kind of just doing the right thing and being a good person. Because so much of it is relationship development, and that I think is probably just to start at what my favorite part is. I would say that’s probably my favorite part of owning my own law firm, is I get to work with the people I want to work with and that I respect and that I like, and you know, that are really kind of putting a great message out into the world and I can kind of help elevate and support that message. So that’s my favorite part of my job. My background is,

Episode 66 Transcription Today I’m talking with Veronica and Miguel of Siete foods about their mission, current products, which are some pretty incredible paleo-friendly tortillas; advice they have for someone who wants to bring a product to market; rebranding; and their favorite ways to enjoy their awesome tortillas. Cassy Joy: Well, today we are back with an interview that I am just so excited about. I’ve been working with these folks about wanting to bring them on the podcast for a little while, because I just love this company. I love what their up to, I love the mission and the foundation, and it just feels like; I don’t know if they’ll have me, but I feel like I’m a part of their family. I’m claiming them anyways {laughs}. I know they hear that a lot. Veronica Garza: Yes! Miguel Garza: Well you are a Garcia, so. Cassy Joy: That’s true! Veronica Garza: Close enough! Miguel Garza: Yeah, close enough. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Oh good, well that just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Well I am so excited about introducing you guys to Siete foods; specifically, Miguel and Veronica Garza, two members of the family. I’ll let them tell you more about their company, and their products, and their mission. But if you haven’t already seen Siete foods, they have these incredible paleo-friendly tortillas. They have one that is nut free made with cassava flour, and one that is made with almond flour. And I’m sure these guys can jump in and either correct anything that I’m saying that’s wrong, or add all the good details, but they’re just wonderful. I have a pack in my freezer at all times; heat them up; I love to make breakfast tortilla tacos with them and all kinds of great things. So I’m excited to have you guys on the show, and welcome to the Fed and Fit podcast! Veronica Garza: Thank you! We’re excited to be chatting with you. Miguel Garza: Yeah, thank you so much for having us. Cassy Joy: Yeah, oh my gosh. My pleasure. Ok, well let’s go ahead and jump into it. If you guys want to go ahead and tell us a little bit about Siete foods; maybe your mission, how y’all got your start, what current products you do have, and where folks can find them just to cover the bases, and then we’ll get into other fun conversation topics. Veronica Garza: Ok great. So, our business has been around for a couple of years now. We really got started with an original product; an almond flour tortilla about 6 years ago; actually a little longer now. Maybe 7 years. So I started making an almond flour tortilla 7 years ago; I was living in Laredo for many years. I was dealing with a couple of different autoimmune conditions, one of them being lupus. The other is ITP, which is basically low platelet counts. I wasn’t feeling very well, just always sick; often on medication; prednisone, just not taking care of my health, or just not feeling well in general. One of my older brothers, Rob, had suggested that I start following a grain-free diet. He had done a lot of research, and read that it could alleviate a lot of autoimmune symptoms. So I started doing that, and I did start feeling a lot better. Pretty much all of my lupus symptoms went away. It was great because I felt better, but there was definitely some stuff missing in my diet that just made it a little annoying and difficult. Miguel Garza: It was sad; let’s be honest. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Veronica Garza: {laughs}

So, it’s good to say hi to you again. {laughs} Arsy Vartanian: It is, it is. I know, it’s funny to do a redo. {laughs} Cassy Joy: It really is. Ok, awesome. I was telling Arsy that on our show, as all the listeners know, we kind of fly by the seat of our pants a little bit, so we’re getting a good introduction to that. Arsy Vartanian: {laughs} Cassy Joy: But Arsy, let’s go ahead and get started. You can introduce yourself way better than I can. So can you tell folks a little bit more about yourself? I would love to know why you started Rubies and Radishes, and really what your business is all about right now. Arsy Vartanian: Sure, yes. I’ll try and give you guys the short version, since it’s been a long time. I think I started my blog in 2010. I’ve always been interested in health, ever since I was a teenager. I had started eating a vegetarian diet, because back then there really wasn’t all this information when I was 16. You couldn’t just go Google everything. And I ended up having a lot of health problems all through my 20s. I was in and out of doctors offices, and nobody ever had any answers for me. So I just kind of had to learn to live with it. I just had really bad headaches and I never had energy. And then I had joined Crossfit I guess in 2009, was there for a while and was loving the workouts, and we did a paleo challenge, and all of a sudden I felt so much better. It was like, my headaches were gone, and everything. I had so much more energy, so I was just one of those people where I was obsessed with it. I wanted to tell everybody, because I felt like I’d found everybody’s solution. {laughs} Cassy Joy: {laughs} Arsy Vartanian: Because you know, I worked in corporate, everybody was basically spent, is how I would describe it. Every single person I knew was so spent, so exhausted, no energy, working too much, eating junk. So yeah, so if anybody has ever worked in a corporate office, usually there’s candy everywhere. Cassy Joy: Mm-hmm.

I took a little bit of a hiatus; a break so I could get some work done on my book, but we’re back, better than ever. I decided that I really want to enter into a phase where I am interviewing some of the people who I love and respect in this industry, and one of the first names that came to mind is a dear friend of mine. Her name is Jen Rulon, and Jen and I both live in San Antonio, Texas, and she’s an incredible lady for a lot of reasons. But just to give you a brief bulleted overview, and then I’m going to let Jen take it away, tell you a little bit more about herself, but she is a 9-time Ironman athlete. The lady is just incredible. I’m constantly in awe of watching her incredible successes with these events. She’s also a coach; she’s coached and motivated athletes not only to get their first triathlon, but some of them to get up to their third ironman triathlon. And she really does an incredible job of guiding her athletes to learn beyond the physical aspects of just doing the training and the event itself. She has learned how to structure live with the Ironman triathlon training, so really how to combine, I know that’s a passion of hers; how to look past just the training and incorporate it with your everyday life, and I’m going to have her tell you more about that. But she received her Master’s degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise science, and started her business, JenRulon.com. You will also see some of her knowledge shared in Runner’s World, Men’s Online Journal, WebMD, and she was just most recently a TEDx speaker. I’m so thrilled to introduce you guys to the very sweet, very knowledgeable, and very strong Jen Rulon. Thank you so much for coming on the show, Jen. Jen Rulon: Thanks for having me, Cassy. Wow, what an introduction. It’s pretty crazy, sometimes as a business owner, as an athlete you just sort of sit there, and you’re like, “oh, I need to do this better, I need to do that more.” And I’m like, dang, I’ve done a lot! {laughs} Cassy Joy: Yeah you have! That’s so funny. It’s so true, it’s so true. We sit down at our computers, and we work; us type-A trying to make it better and better personalities. It’s pretty cool to sit back. You have accomplished a lot, and I’ve always admired you. I was thinking about it; I moved back to San Antonio and started working at LuLuLemon. Jen Rulon: Yeah. Cassy Joy: Which I think is where you and I first connected. Jen Rulon: That’s correct. Cassy Joy: Is it? Ok. And that was almost 7 years ago. Jen Rulon: Has it been that long? Cassy Joy: {laughs} Isn’t that incredible? Jen Rulon: Oh my goodness. Wow. We’ve done a lot, girl! Cassy Joy: We have. A lot has happened. You know, in 2011 I started Fed and Fit, so that’s happened. We just; a lot has happened.

I’ve been looking forward to it all morning. {laughs} Jennifer Robbins: Us too. Cassy Joy: Oh good! And we finally sorted out our technical difficulties so I feel like we’re ready to take on the world. Simone Miller: Absolutely. Cassy Joy: Totally. So I know each of you have your own story and journey that’s lead you to paleo, because I stalked you thoroughly before the call {laughs}. I’ve read all the details, so if you leave anything out, don’t worry I can fill it in. Everybody: {laughs} Cassy Joy: But to start off, I would love if you would share a little bit about your story with today’s listeners. Simone Miller: Sure. Well, this is Simone, and my story really began in food more than in the health side of things, and I’ve just been in the food business a really long time, cooking in kitchens since I was in college, and always sort of resisted cooking for a living, mostly because my family is in the food business and always told me how hard it was. {laughs} Mostly my uncle; “never go into the food business,” he said, and of course I’m such a good listener. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Simone Miller: So I resisted it but always loved it, and worked in restaurants. Long story short, once I wound up out in California after moving here from the East Coast, I wanted to get back into food, but I didn’t want to work in a restaurant anymore. So I started doing personal chefing, and that turned into catering, and basically as soon as I said; ok, this is it, I’m doing it, I’m starting a catering business, I got a food allergy test done to try to get to the bottom of my ongoing sort of chronic health issues, and found out that I was allergic to gluten, among a bunch of other sensitivities. That sort of threw a wrench in things, because it’s really hard to cater a party without gluten; or, at least it was at the time.

Ep. 54: Dating a Paleo Woman According to 3 Non-Paleo Bachelors On today's episode, 3 non-paleo bachelors share their thoughts on dating a paleo woman. Cassy Joy: And we’re back with another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. Thanks so much for dialing in everybody. I am so excited about today's episode. It's kind of a little fun pet project of mine. I got this wild idea for an episode based on some questions that ladies had been emailing me. I like to think of myself as, I have some of the answers. But I definitely don’t have all of the answers. But I will bring you the people that at least have those other answers that I don’t. So for this one, it was all about dating. I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about, really just how to handle. I’m really just going to speak to just the ladies on today's episode. but you’re a gal, and you're out on a date. Or you like a guy, or he’s already asked you out. When is the appropriate time to tell him that you follow a paleo lifestyle? When do you tell him that you like CrossFit? Because some of us; a lot of ladies, at least that have been writing me are kind of afraid of the connotations associated with all that stuff. So I thought who better to ask than my three most favorite eligible non-paleo bachelors. So, bachelor number one. I am so pleased to introduce you guys to Dr. Preston Carlisle. Preston is a second-year psychiatric resident at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He and I have known each other for about 15 years. Which, probably made me feel older than anything I've ever written in my entire life {laughs}. We both attended Health Careers high school, actually, in San Antonio. It was a magnet school. And Preston did me the honor of attending senior prom as my date. So I don't want you to be too intimidated, ladies, but I have to brag on Preston just a minute. He's spent a year playing semi-professional football, graduated from Brown Medical School, and has his own incredible wealth of personal nutrition and fitness experience. Especially as it relates to his time spent in athletics in high school and then in college and then in that semi-professional league. So he's a really great resource. I don’t know, Preston. I don’t think you consider yourself paleo, which is why I thought you’d be perfect for this show. Plus, you're funny, and you're a straight shooter, and I know you'll give me some straight answers. So welcome to the show! Preston Carlisle: Thanks for that introduction that is only going to lead to disappointment for all of your listeners. That was very nice. Some of the things sounded maybe true. Cassy Joy: {laughs} They’re all true. They’re all true. That’s my favorite part of this job, actually, when I interview people. Is bragging on them. Because it’s so much fun. It’s so much fun to hear somebody else say what you do. It always sounds better than when you say it in your head. Well cool. I'm excited. You know, I want to pick your brain on the dating scene. You and I haven't lived in the same state in 15 years just about. So we've kept in touch with phone, and social media and things like that. But I’d love to kind of hear your perspective. You always have a unique perspective on things. Preston Carlisle: {laughs} Cassy Joy: {laughs} So, first off. Preston Carlisle: That was a very nice way of saying that. Cassy Joy: I don’t know what you mean by that. {laughing} I’m just kidding. Preston Carlisle: I feel like soon everyone is going to know what you mean. Cassy Joy: Everyone is going to be aware. {laughs} Ok, well let’s kick this thing off. What do you think is the best way for a lady to address he...

She’s a friend and colleague I like to think of you, Amy, as. {laughs} Just so you know. Amy Densmore: {laughs} Yes. Cassy Joy: Her name is Amy Densmore; oh, there’s puppies! I love it. Amy Densmore: Yeah. {laughs} Cassy Joy: Of The Paleo Cupboard. She’s got an incredible blog, an awesome resource, really the most hilarious social media account. Amy Densmore: Yes! {laughs} Cassy Joy: I still remember; Amy, I don’t know if you remember this, but I think we met; I don’t know if it was 2 or 3 years ago, and it was PaleoFx. And a group of us went to lunch... Amy Densmore: Yes! {laughs} Cassy Joy: I can’t remember, Lamberts, I think that’s what it was, in Austin. Amy Densmore: Yes, in Austin, yes. Cassy Joy: Yeah! And Mary Shenouda was there, and oh gosh, a bunch of other people. Amy Densmore: Yes, I think Simone from Zenbelly. Cassy Joy: That’s right, Simone was there. Pamela Martha Focker. {laughs} She was there. Amy Densmore: Yes, she was there, yes. Cassy Joy: And we just had this great lunch, and I remember sitting across from you. We hadn’t met before, and I was like, who is this hilarious beautiful woman that is just {laughs} and we had the best time. I didn’t want lunch to end. Amy Densmore: Yeah, that was so much fun. So much fun. I do remember that, yes. That was our first time for meeting! That was quite the lunch. I think everyone around us was not as impressed. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Amy Densmore: Because we were just; everybody at that table was just laughing the entire time, we were having so much fun. Cassy Joy: We were, I remember. I remember what Mary ordered; we were all ordering food, and Mary ordered herself a scotch {laughs} Amy Densmore: She did. She said she was going to fast, and I thought; oh, she’s not going to have anything. But she had a scotch, and I said, I like this chick. She’s cool. Cassy Joy: Exactly! I was like… {laughs} Amy Densmore: She was just working and having a scotch, and she’d pop in to socialize, she’d turn her head,

Ep. 37: Mindset Roundtable (FFCS Part 5) This is the Fed and Fit podcast starting your week off with motivational thoughts on real food and fun fitness activities with Cassy Joy Garcia and co-host, Charissa Talbot. Remember our disclaimer; the information and opinions shared in this podcast are solely those of any given individual, and not a substitute for medical advice. Here are the ladies. This week we’re going to talk about uppers, downers, and how to emotionally navigate your college experience. TOPICS: 1. introducing Cassy’s guests [5:42] 2. Fed and Fit college student part 5 [10:41] 3. Downers [15:54] 4. Uppers [27:26] Cassy Joy: And we’re back, with another episode of the Fed and Fit college student mini-series! Thank you guys for joining us again. This is episode number 37 unless my records are totally off! {laughs} Samantha Garcia: {laughs} Cassy Joy: They’re looking at me like, who doesn’t know what number you’re on! {laughs} So this is Cassy Joy with Fed and Fit, and I am joined today as a very special episode; I say that on a lot of episodes, but I actually mean it this one, with my two sisters; both Kim and Sam, who you’ve heard if you’re a long time listener of Fed and Fit podcast, you’ve heard both Kimberly and Sam. And I’m also joined by my college friend, Julie! Julie: Yeah, hi! Cassy Joy: {laughs} Everybody: {laughing} Kimberly Dunn: Holla! Cassy Joy: I hope you guys can hear us ok. We’re recording over other means; to be really transparent, if anybody is listening that wants to start a podcast, right now we’re recording over Voice Memos on my iPhone! So do what it takes, you can make it happen. So I apologize for the funky audio quality, but I thought it was more important to have really cool perspectives on this bonus part of the miniseries. So this is the very last; I hinted at it in the last episode, but this is the last episode of this miniseries, and then we’re going to jump into a new topic. But we’ve gotten some really great feedback, thank you guys so much for tuning in via social media to give us some insight; I’m glad to know that this is resonating with folks. Whether you’re in the college scene or not, I think there are some good information nuggets. And I’m grateful that my sister, Samantha, has joined me for this series. She’s done an awesome job of donating her knowledge. Sam and I have been wanting to talk about the things that we’re going to address in this episode since the beginning. Samantha Garcia: Mm-hmm. Cassy Joy: But it really didn’t, until now, really merit a full episode. Because it’s really all about mindset, and it’s a really ambiguous thing. You can’t really put your finger on attitude, right? You can put your finger on sleeping enough at night, drinking enough during the day. You know your amount and your water volume. {laughs} Julie: Drinking enough booze? Everybody: {laughs} Cassy Joy: That was Julie. There’s things that you can actually do that are action items, I guess, that are so much easier to talk about and tangible, exactly. And when it comes to mindset, and thinking about things that are going to put you in the right state of mind, it’s really the context from where everything happens, but it’s the hardest thing to coach. Because unless you are doing all the right things in your life, your mindset is either there or it isn’t. {laughs} I did a really good job describing that.

Samantha Garcia: Yeah, thank you so much for having me back again! Cassy Joy: Of course. I was driving around this morning from Crossfit, and then I went to a coffee shop to knock out some work. Because sometimes, I don’t know why. I get a lot of work done when I’m home, but when I’m in a coffee shop, I feel like all of the strangers around me are holding me accountable to the to-do list. Samantha Garcia: {laughs} Cassy Joy: {laughs} They just saw me draw! Samantha Garcia: Right! Cassy Joy: So anyways, I crushed through a bunch of stuff on my to-do list, and I came home so that we could record this together, and on the drive home I was thinking about how I was going to introduce you; I was thinking, gosh, I’ve called Sam so many names over the years, for whatever reason. Samantha Garcia: {laughs} Cassy Joy: I, for a very long time, I don’t know why, I just think the name Samantha is just so fun, and there’s so much you can do with it! {laughs} Samantha Garcia: {laughs} Well thank you. Cassy Joy: You’re welcome. There’s Sam, Sammy-Sam, Sammy Joe Bob, Sam Joe Lee. Samantha Garcia: Sam Joe Lee? Have you ever called me that? Cassy Joy: Maybe not to your face. {Laughs} Samantha Garcia: {laughing} Well yeah, just now. That’s new. Cassy Joy: I think I just made it up. Samantha Garcia: Sam Joe Lee. Cassy Joy: Do you like that one? Samantha Garcia: I do, it’s interesting. I think my favorite though is Sammy Joe Bob. Cassy Joy: Sammy Joe Bob. I use that one a lot. Samantha Garcia: You do. Cassy Joy: It just rolls off the tongue. Yeah, so thanks again for joining us. If you guys are just now tuning in, and you missed the first two parts, this is a series that Sam and I have collaborated on because we really want to highlight, I guess just how to really make the most out of your college experience if you are a college student, and also to highlight some tips, tricks, and methods for anybody who is going through a life transition. I am currently now in my late 20s, and I turn 30 next year March. Hmm, you’re going to have a 30-year-old sister, Sam. Samantha Garcia: Oh my. Cassy Joy: {laughs} And so, life transitions,

Remember our disclaimer; the information and opinions shared in this podcast are solely those of any given individual, and not a substitute for medical advice. Here are the ladies. Today we’re going to talk about the Fed and Fit college student hydration plan, tips to navigating the alcohol scene, and how to have a healthy relationship with caffeine. Cassy Joy: And we’re back! Today I’m joined once again by my lovely sister, Samantha Garcia. Hey Sam! Samantha Garcia: Hello! Cassy Joy: {laughs} I think today we might have a little bit better audio quality. Sam and I are working out some kinks, but we’re getting there. Samantha Garcia: Ye-haw! Cassy Joy: Ye-haw! So we’re excited about today’s episode. If you caught last weeks’ episode, which was number 33 of the Fed and Fit podcast, we launched a series called the Fed and Fit college student. And this is going to be a mini-series, 5-6 episodes that we’re doing that, while it’s directed at providing the information that will empower somebody that is either entering college or somebody that is going through any kind of a big transition in their life. Providing them with the information that they might need to make it as seamless and healthy as possible. So we’ve broke all of that out; we’ve got some fun facts and fun information for you guys, and I hope, even if you may not be going to college, or you don’t have someone near and dear to you that is in that part of their life, you are able to get something out of today’s episode. Sam and I, while we’ve been writing the content out, we’ve been going through memories and having some self discovery, so I think we’ve got a good show ahead. So today we’re going to talk about, leading into part 2 of this mini-series, we’re going to talk about all the liquids. {laughs} Samantha Garcia: {laughs} Cassy Joy: We’re going to talk about, while part 1 we decided was priority number 1 in terms of the pillars of health is sleep, and that’s something that we talk about a lot in the Fed and Fit project. But priority number 1 being sleep, and we talked all about the reasons why, how to get better sleep, and what it can really do for you in your college career, in your professional career, in your life in general and your health overall. Today we’re turning our attention to water. We’re going to talk about hydration and what that really means. And because they’re so closely associated, we’re going to expand the water conversation and talk about a couple of other liquids to include caffeine and alcohol. And this is an especially interesting topic when you’re talking to college students, because caffeine and alcohol tend to be the focus more so than regular water. So we’re going to address those, and we’re going to talk briefly about them and just realistically sort of just lay out the facts for you, what caffeine really does to your body, what alcohol really does to your body, how to best prepare your body if you are going to enjoy some of those things, and then some more reasonable practices, so just some things to keep in mind. 1. Cassy’s News Real [3:32] But, before we get there,

Yeah, thank you guys so much for hanging out with us for these 30 episodes. And if you keep telling us that you’re enjoying them, then we’ll keep making them. I will keep bringing on the guests that you say you enjoy, try to invite folks that you want to hear from, and we’ll keep talking about the things that we enjoy talking about and that you find useful. So thanks for being here. And good morning, Charissa! Charissa Talbot: Good morning, and thank you to everybody. We really do love all of our listeners. I love the feedback; I love when they comment on an Instagram post. I don’t know; it’s good to know that we’re not just talking to the air and people actually like what we have to say. Or maybe they don’t and they just find it interesting to listen to {laughs}. Cassy Joy: Either way. Charissa Talbot: Either way. Cassy Joy: I hope you're entertained. I mean, at the end of the day, Charissa and I have never claimed to have all of the answers, which ooh, that’s kind of a preview of today’s episode. Charissa Talbot: What, what! Cassy Joy: We don’t have all the answers, but we do our best to have a good time while we’re telling you the answers that we do have. {laughs} Charissa Talbot: Mm-hmm. For sure. 1. Cassy’s News Real [2:35] Cassy Joy: Ok, so, let’s quickly jump into it. I called Charissa, to admit fully, I was like, I want to do a show about this, and she said sure, let’s do it! So I’m pumped about today’s episode. It’s kind of out of left field. But before we get there, we’re going to jump through our News Real real quickly. {laughs} Charissa Talbot: For sure,

And we were just walking this morning going, is there really basically only 5 months left in this year? How did this happen? We were both listing off things we really want to get accomplished this year that we haven’t, and we’re like, how are we going to do this. {laughs} So it’s like this year, it’s like, hello, it’s July! What happened? Cassy Joy: {laughs} Charissa Talbot: We started this in January. It’s crazy how fast this last 6 months have just gone. They’re just gone. I’m like {laughs} wait a minute, what’s happening! Cassy Joy: Oh man. Not that you’re asking for it, but I would prescribe some meditation. {laughs} Charissa Talbot: Yes. Cassy Joy: Yeah, it’s tough. It’s tough to watch the calendar tick by. I’m in a slightly different mindset, because I want it to tick by faster almost. Charissa Talbot: Right. Cassy Joy: Because I want to be married! Charissa Talbot: {laughs} Cassy Joy: The official title of this episode is, that one time we forgot to record an episode. {laughs} Charissa Talbot: Because we were actually together, and enjoying ourselves, and having a good time. I’m sure everyone can understand. So I drove up to San Antonio today to come to Cassy’s engagement party. We both had such a crazy week, we’re like, we’ll just record a podcast while we’re there together, and one thing leads to another, and here we are driving on the way to dinner. We have reservations, we can’t be late, but we’re squeezing this one in! Cassy Joy: We are. We honor our commitments! Charissa Talbot: {laughs} Cassy Joy: I’m like a dog with a bone with a schedule. It may not be exactly what we were going to talk about, but we can save that for the next one and at least we’re dropping by to say hi. Charissa Talbot: Yes. Cassy Joy: It’s been a crazy week. Austin and I just threw an engagement/house warming party at our casa, and it was a good time. We had all kinds of yummy, tasty, paleo foods, and I tried some new recipes on my friends and family. They’re the guinea pigs, just so you guys know. Charissa Talbot: Oh my gosh, that pudding! The toffee and the chocolate? Oh my god. Cassy Joy: The pudding. I was pretty excited about the pudding. I kept going back to test it to make sure it was still good, Charissa Talbot: Yeah, I had to eat the whole, you know. Yeah, I did a lot of testing today. Cassy Joy: In case you’re wondering, it’s a chocolate pudding, a dark chocolate pudding with a pistachio toffee on top. Charissa Talbot: Mm-mmm. It was so good. Cassy Joy: It was yummy. Charissa Talbot: And Cassy made her sangria recipe from the blog. Oh my gosh, it was amazing. Cassy Joy: It was good. It’s one of my favorites. It’s a sparkling peach sangria, and we’ll link to it in the show notes but you should definitely look it up. I actually haven’t made it since I posted that recipe because it’s so tasty, and you have to go through two bottles of wine to make it. Because it calls for one bottles of moscato and one bottle of prosecco or some other sparkling wine, which is quite a bit just for a dinner party. Charissa Talbot: Yes. And I am being safe right now, I got to Cassy’s house at 2, that’s when I had my sangria, and I’m driving now,

Cassy Joy: Good morning Charissa! Charissa Talbot: Good morning! And it actually is morning. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Charissa Talbot: Sometimes we record, and it’s not the morning. But I’m drinking coffee, its morning time. Cassy Joy: I have an empty coffee cup sitting next to me, I’m kind of wishing it had more in it. Charissa Talbot: That’s kind of sad. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Yeah. I’m glad to have you back; I want to hear all about your vacation and Martha’s Vineyard. I saw some photos and it just looked beautiful. Charissa Talbot: It was very picturesque. Very, very nice. I had an interesting, I had a rough start to my vacation. You know I really needed the break and to relax, and I had a couple of flight changes I had to make, and each flight I was on, one had maintenance issues, and another one got stuck on the runway for a long period of time, so instead of being able to walk from one plane change to the other, all day long I was on a plane, and then running. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Charissa Talbot: On a plane, and then running, and then on a plane. And then when I got to Martha’s Vineyard, they had left my luggage in New York City. So I didn’t get my luggage until the next day at like 4 o'clock, which was a little rough. But I will say, having a good attitude and being friendly and happy goes a long way. The flight attendant at the airport was so pleasant, and you could tell she was having a rough day, and I was just patient and kind and nice, and it paid off. She made sure I got my bag, and when I came back to get on my flight home, she asked me to save my receipts from stuff I needed to buy, because of course I didn’t have anything with me. Cassy Joy: Mm-hmm. Charissa Talbot: And she went ahead and just put in my refund, and I’m going to be getting a check in a couple of days, so. I don’t know, it just, you know there are some people that are just so, you see them in the airport, they’re really stressed out, and they’re frustrated, and they’re snappy, and it’s like, it doesn’t serve you or the people around you or your purpose or your goal. Everything is going to be what it’s going to be, just relax people. {laughs} Cassy Joy: Yeah! Charissa Talbot: And be kind. Because being a flight attendant or working behind the counter or any of those jobs, it’s very taxing and I can’t imagine. Ugh, man those girls, they go through a lot. And boys. Cassy Joy: Mm-hmm. Charissa Talbot: So just be nice. Everyone, just be nice. Cassy Joy: Yeah, you know it goes back to the age old rule, and this is something I really do live by, and have it twirling around in my brain on a regular basis. But I feel like a lot of bad attitudes that we project out into the world come from a place of us feeling like we have it harder than everybody el...

How to find your power [11:28] 3. Client success stories [17:32] 4. Struggling with optimism [23:23] Cassy Joy: Today on the podcast, I’m so thrilled for this 23rd episode to have a friend of mine join me today while Charissa is on vacation. Today I’m introducing you guys to Mary, AKA the Paleo Chef, AKA Mer. She is a tremendous chef and lifestyle coach. She is the creative force behind https://paleochef.com/, phat fudge, that’s P-H-A-T in case you were wondering {laughs}, which may be available for order, I’ll let her tell you more about that in a little bit, and the 5-day guide, Eat, Play, Crush. This is really one of those interviews where I personally identify with our topic so much so that I’m just going to put it out there, and I know you guys will get something from it. I came to know Mary a few years back at PaleoFx. I was just telling her about this, how I remembered meeting her. We were sitting down, there was a group of us at Lamberts in Austin, and we were going to have barbecue on the patio. And I distinctly remember this waiter walking up, and he was like, “hey guys! Can I tell you about the special today?” And she took the reins immediately, and she was like, ok, here’s the thing. We’re all following a grain-free lifestyle, so tell what’s on your menu that you can actually eat. Oh me? I’ll have a bourbon meat. {laughs} Mary Shenouda: {laughs} Cassy Joy: In very few words, she won my heart. She is a lady who cuts the crap, really gets real, and she’s always provided some meaningful feedback and inspiration. She reached out a few months back when I was caught in the should or shouldn’t I’s of launching the Fed and Fit project, and she literally lit the fire under my backside to push me into motion. She gave me a schedule, and it wouldn’t have happened without her. So I wanted to bring her on the show today so that one, you could meet this wonderful woman, and two, she can share a little bit about her magic. Mary, I’m so excited to have you! 1. Introducing our guest, Mary Shenouda [2:45] Mary Shenouda: Thank you! Thank you for saying I lit a fire, I’ve always wanted to be a magician. A little fire starter. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Mission accomplished. I told everybody that. They were like, wow, it’s like you just woke up one day and you decided to start doing this. I was like, well my friend Mary asked me for a deliverable schedule and I really don’t want to disappoint her. {laughing} Mary Shenouda: {laughs} You know, having that accountability or that power where people don’t want to let you down is really magical. That, and enthusiasm is contagious, so I will say I was enthusiastic for you and you caught the bug, and here we are.

Cassy Joy: You are le’ pooped. {laughs} Charissa Talbot: Yes. Yes. But, I am super excited to be here with all of you, so I will say that. Cassy Joy: I am super excited to have you here. I was fully prepared to have to wing it so you could start on your vacation a little bit early. {laughs} Charissa Talbot: It’s totally fine. Totally fine. Cassy Joy: That’s great. Charissa, for those of you who don’t know why she is so le’ pooped, just finished, if you saw that autoimmune wellness bundle, she was the little Oz behind the curtain that was helping to keep all the engines running constantly during that really intense 5 days. Charissa Talbot: Yeah. Cassy Joy: Thank you for all of your hard work. Charissa Talbot: Aw, thanks. Yeah I got really good feedback from everybody, and we did really well and a lot of people are going to have so much information now in one place to really help them get started, you know for those who have to look at the possibility of them getting a little more strict with their eating to help them heal a little bit faster. It’s good. It’s all over really positive, and it was a really god experience. Now I know. The thing is, when you go through something, whatever it may be, you’re always learning, you know? Whether it be a relationship, a friendship, a work project, an event. Whatever it is, whatever you’re doing, you just kind of have to be grateful for the opportunity to figure out how to do it better if you decide it’s something that you want to do again. I’m feeling super, super grateful about the whole experience, but I’m just a little tired. {laughs} Cassy Joy: That’s really sweet. That’s a great perspective, and it definitely plays true to your character. I’m excited for you. Charissa Talbot: Aww. Cassy Joy: There’s nothing quite like that feel; this is going to sound a little weird, and I don’t mean it to the unhealthy extent, but you know that exhaustion you feel after you push publish or send, or you finish some major project, and you’re kind of able to sit on the couch and bask in that accomplishment.

Ok, now I’m ready. {laughs} Cassy Joy: Now you’re ready? {laughs} It’s about my garden. Charissa Talbot: Oooh! Cassy Joy: It’s really important. I never realized how much of my littler heart that garden would consume. Charissa Talbot: Mmm. Cassy Joy: I love it so much. It is exploding. I started everything from seeds, and if you’re a first time listener, this past spring I decided, I live in suburbia of San Antonio, and Austin, my fiancé, built me 3 raised beds that are, what are they, 4 x 8 each. So they’re pretty good sized, and we filled them with organic soil and I sprouted seeds, I was so excited, and things are doing really well. My spaghetti squash is enormous. I have a cabbage patch full of kale and collards, and I have a nightshade patch, which is something that probably only a nutritionist would think about. {laughs} Charissa Talbot: {laughs} Right. Cassy Joy: They’re foods, but I’m growing jalapenos and tomatillos, eggplants, and then some tomatoes, of course. Anyway, everything is doing really well. But something that I did not expect is the little friendly family of 6 and 8 legged little critters that have decided to move in because of the garden. And that has been interesting to watch. We’ve got an orb weaver, which is a spider, and a bunch of caterpillars munching on my baby cabbage patch...

Ep 18: Busy life vs. a FULL life This is the Fed and Fit podcast starting your week off with motivational thoughts on real food and fun fitness activities with Cassy Joy Garcia and co-host, Charissa Talbot. Remember our disclaimer; the information and opinions shared in this podcast are solely those of any given individual, and not a substitute for medical advice. Here are the ladies. Today we’re going to talk about the difference between a busy life and a full life, treats you can keep in the freezer, and the no equipment butt and thigh workout. Topics 1. Updates from Charissa [1:20] 2. Updates from Cassy [8:05] 3. Busy versus full [14:04] 4. Three ways to deal with “busy” [23:47] 5. Three ways to deal with busy negators [33:23] 6. Fed segment: Freezer treats [39:24] 7. Fed segment: Butt and thigh workout [45:41] Cassy Joy: Good morning Charissa! Charissa Talbot: Good morning, Cassy! It’s a beautiful day, and it actually is morning. Sometimes we don’t always record in the morning, but we actually are and I’m glad because I’m awake, I’m excited, I’ve had coffee, I’m ready to go. Cassy Joy: Yeah, totally! This is the time of the day, the birds are chirping. Charissa Talbot: It’s Saturday morning! Cassy Joy: {laughs} I’ve got a big morning. But I want to switch things up today; let’s jump into girl talk, and I want you to go first. 1. Updates from Charissa [1:20] Charissa Talbot: Ok, no problem. I can always talk about lots of stuff. So, right now I’m recording from my brand new place. Granted, I have set up a little chair and an outdoor table because I have no furniture in here yet, but the moving truck is coming later today. But, I have wifi, a laptop, and a place to sit, and coffee. So we’re good to go this morning! {laughs} Cassy Joy: What more could a girl need. Charissa Talbot: Exactly! Well, a lot, but let’s not go there. So, a little funny story I’ll get into real quick is, yesterday I took myself to IKEA to buy a brand new bed and bed frame because I got rid of my old mattress. But I figured, I’ll be able to put this together, and then I’ll have somewhere to sleep last night, because last night was the first night I stayed in my new place, even though I didn’t have any of my stuff here. And you know, #singlegirlproblems, complete fail. It’s so funny; you open up the IKEA instructions; this is hilarious. I’m going to have to Instagram this on Monday or something, because I’m on a social detox right now. But you open up the instructions, and there’s the little IKEA dude, he’s kind of like this fat, chubby, happy looking dude, and he’s got a smile on his face and he has someone standing next to him, and he’s got his tools. It’s kind of saying, you need someone. And then it’s got a picture of him all sad and upset by himself. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Charissa Talbot: So it’s like, there’s no words. It’s just a picture, and I’m like, I can do this by myself. I’m not going to be the sad guy. Cassy Joy: {laughing} Charissa Talbot: No, last night, I tried 3 or 4 times, it kept falling apart, and I realized that you really need another person to hold up the other end, to attach this, and I definitely ended up being the sad one, by myself. Cassy Joy: Ohhhh! Charissa Talbot: Like, at 10:30, I finally gave up. I was like, that’s it! So I just unrolled, because the IKEA mattress comes in this tight roll, if you’ve ever bought one.

Episode 17 Topics: Paleo f(x) Recap! ...and two surprise visitors Catch the Paleo f(x) conference via the recordings HERE! We would LOVE some feedback, so feel free to leave a review in iTunes, comment below, or even give us a shout on social media! Ep. 17: Paleo f(x) Recap Cassy Joy : Hello! Welcome back to the craziest Fed and Fit podcast we’ve ever recorded. Charissa Talbot : Number 17. Live, from PaleoFx. Cassy Joy : Yes. And, Charissa and I, this is the first one we’re recording actually in person with each other, and it’s really exciting because I get to see her face, and there’s people walking by and they’re wondering why we’re talking to the computer. Cassy Joy : Sitting on the same chair. Cassy Joy: Sitting on the same chair. We found a corner, and we snuck away. Forgive the background noise, and forget the most likely technical difficulties coming your way, but we wanted to give you guys a quick behind the scenes recap of what’s been going on while we’ve been here. Charissa Talbot: Woot-woot! Cassy Joy: Yeah. If you’re just catching this podcast, and you didn’t get the last one and you have no idea what the heck PaleoFx is, it is a very large, very thorough, paleo conference. All things paleo, fitness, functional medicine, all that good stuff. All of the movers and shakers in the community to include bloggers and authors and other vendors that are creating a product to support this lifestyle all get together, we have one big giant family party, and it’s a lot of fun. Charissa Talbot: It’s like summer camp. Cassy Joy: It is! It is like summer camp. Charissa Talbot: Or, I call it my Christmas, because it’s better for me than Christmas. I get really excited. Cassy Joy: Aww, it is. It’s really exciting. You know, we can jump right into it; it probably won’t be a very long one. Charissa Talbot: Yes. Cassy Joy: But I think it would be fun, Charissa, if you and I told briefly what our experiences have been. Charissa Talbot: Yeah! Cassy Joy: They’ve probably been a little bit different. {laughs} Charissa Talbot: Very. We’ve hardly seen each other. Cassy Joy: We haven’t! Charissa Talbot: It’s like, oh hey! Ok, gotta go over here. {laughs} Cassy Joy: Hey girl, you look cute again! Yeah. So it’s been. Charissa Talbot: Hey girl, hey! Cassy Joy: {laughs} It’s been a lot of fun. Today is Sunday, it’s the last official day of the conference. It was all day Friday, all day Saturday, and with it being this big event, a lot of bloggers and authors and people who I consider my colleagues and friends. Charissa Talbot: Mm-hmm. Cassy Joy: They all come into town, and it’s the one time a year that we’re all in the same spot. It’s hard, because I want to hang out here and talk to everybody, but you also want to spend some quality time. Charissa Talbot: Yeah. Cassy Joy: So that’s been a lot of fun for me, hanging out with some of my friends that came in. We got a big house, and we just made some good meals, and that’s been fun. Getting some sneak peeks on what some folks are working on and books that are coming out, so that’s been a lot of fun. Eating some neat places; we ate at Sway. Charissa Talbot: Ooh, nice! Cassy Joy: Oh it was so good. If you’re in Austin, or you're coming to Austin, and you really like some fun Thai food, I really recommend Sway. And they have, what is it, sipping vinegar on the menu. I didn’t try it, but I want to go back for it. Charissa Talbot: You didn’t try it? Cassy Joy: No, well, I forgot my glasses {laughs} and my friend Stacy had to read me the menu, and I didn’t want her to have to read the whole thing.
