Today, Sandra quizzes Rob on gut health, inflammation, and fats. These themes are all interconnected, and we discuss the role that certain types of fat have for our gut health and overall health. We talk about the biggest sources of fat in the average Canadian diet and if any of these foods are also included in the anti-inflammatory MIND diet. We link back these stats to reasons why (in general) the North American diet can be more of a pro-inflammatory way of eating and ways to alter this to help. Dr. Ginny Trierweiler is a psychologist, author, certified health coach, President and Principle of Slender for Good, and the author of the book titled “Slender for Good after50: Eat More, Stress Less, and Never Diet Again.” Ginny describes how she had a wake-up call in her 50s when she began struggling with her weight as well as inflammation in her body. This set her on a journey of research and discovery how to nourish her body and activate health and healing from within. Ginny shares her story of working in a nursing home and discovering that many of the patients were only in their 60s and 70s, and had lost everything due to their impaired health, lack of mobility, and inability to care for themselves. This led her to the realization that she was on a trajectory to end up in a nursing home herself if she didn't make major lifestyle changes, beginning with nutrition. She explains how once she began focusing on eliminating junk food from her diet (often referred to as treats), the weight that she struggled with for so long started falling off. As an added benefit, the physical pain and discomfort she dealt with for so long slowly disappeared, her sleep improved, her hot flashes stopped, and her brain fog cleared. That's when she knew she had to share this information with other smart, vibrant women over 40 get wonderful results and help them be slender for good, naturally! Your habits shape your identity more than you realize. In this episode, I'm sharing four simple yet powerful daily habits that have been transforming my energy, mindset, and overall well-being—plus a bonus habit at the end that's been a total game-changer.
Key Takeaways:Victimhood is a mindset, not just a circumstance—you may not control what happens, but you control your response. The brain is wired to reinforce victim identity through confirmation bias, fear patterns, and social validation.Society profits from keeping people feeling powerless—media, politics, and even healthcare thrive on dependency.Shifting out of victimhood doesn't mean ignoring real struggles—it means reclaiming your power to respond.Changing your self-talk, media diet, and daily actions can shift your identity from victim to creator.ACTION STEP

In this episode we explore how our "material world" influences the manifestation of TMS/MindBody Syndrome. Interestingly, the very symptoms that one experiences is influenced not only by one's own personal experiences, but also subconsciously through collective and cultural influences. This leads to the infinite expression of TMS symptoms that one may experience at any given time.Since your belief system is also a factor of the world in which you live, it can be difficult to break free from the mythology of physical symptoms resulting from physical causes. This is especially true when navigating the medical system (both conventional and alternative) as well as simply going about daily life in relationships with friends, family, and the general public.Healing TMS means breaking free from the belief system from which TMS is bred, seeing the holes in the materialistic logic so that you can embrace the truth of the multidimensional mindbody phenomenon.Hopefully you can start to get a glimpse of freedom from TMS - it's closer than you might think! For more support in your healing, check out the TMS Free Life Program (https://www.alter.health/tms-free-life) or 1-1 coaching with Dr. Ben (https://www.alter.health/mind-body-coaching) Links to more good stuff - GREEN FORCE! - www.visfoods.co (use the code AlterYourHealth for $10 off)- Eat More, Weigh Less Program - www.alter.health/eat-more-weigh-less- 1-on-1 Nutritional Analysis Package - www.alter.health/nutritional-analysis - Get the Alter Health weekly WFPB Meal Guides: www.alter.health/meal-guides- Thrive on Plants Program: www.alter.health/thrive-on-plants- TMS Free Life Program - www.alter.health/tms-free-life

Some oils are advertised as health foods. But no oil is really healthy, not even olive oil. If you don't want to spend your days eating steamed, poached, or boiled food and you think oil-free food is boring, this episode is for you. Today's guest, Chef Del Sroufe, will teach you how to sauté, stir-fry, bake, and roast without oil or butter. With 33 years of cooking experience, Chef Del is an expert in oil-free cooking methods. At eight years old, he was creating dishes from whatever he could find in their kitchen. By thirteen, he was flaunting his culinary talents by preparing family dinners. Chef Del worked at a premier vegetarian restaurant in Ohio, The King Avenue Coffeehouse. He later opened his bakery, Del's Bread, serving delicious vegan pastries and assorted delicacies. In 2001, he transitioned from his bakery business to start a vegan Personal Chef Service. In 2006, Chef Del joined Wellness Forum Foods as Executive Chef, where he continued the tradition of delivering great-tasting plant-based meals to clients. He also teaches cooking classes and helps people transition to a healthy plant-based diet. Chef Del is the author of Forks over Knives: The Cookbook, a New York Times Bestseller; Better than Vegan, the story of his struggle with weight loss and gain and how he managed to lose over 200 pounds on a low fat, plant-based diet, The China Study Quick and Easy Cookbook and The China Study Family Cookbook which contain flavorful whole food plant-based recipes. “It's kind of a responsibility that I feel to help others because I'm selling food to people. I've been doing that for a long time, so it seems that it's my responsibility to at least let them know what they're getting themselves into and to be as honest as possible. So yeah, I feel a responsibility for that, and I feel lucky too that I got to do this, that I got to be. And if you ever join my weight loss group - I don't know, some people don't want to join it, it's a trigger for people - but you get to see this non-judgmental environment where we support each other, and we work together. That's a special place because you don't get that. I have people in my group who don't have any support from their real life, from their family, from their friends, from their spouses, from work, so the world is kind of antagonistic to what they're trying to do, and then they're trying to negotiate that. I have cancer survivors who are just a year later getting their spouses on board and their family on board because it's about survival.” - Chef Del What we discuss in this episode: - Chef Del's colorful cooking career and his plant-based journey in a vegetarian kitchen - The true impact of health compartmentalization and unhealthy eating behavior - How to prevent food from burning when you don't use oil - Healthy substitute for food thickeners, butter, eggs, and cheese and tips to make vegan food more filling - Chef Del's favorite herbs and spices for that much-needed flavor - Tips to make veggies, fruits, and spices stay fresh longer, what type of milk to use for cooking and baking, how to make a great muffin, black bean brownie, and other delicious plant-based dishes. - The long and tedious process of writing a cookbook and testing the recipes. - Book recommendation: Eat More, Weigh Less: Dr. Dean Ornish's Life Choice Program for Losing Weight Safely While Eating Abundantly Resources: - Website: https://chefdelsroufe.com/ - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chefdelsroufe/ - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ChefDelSroufe - Buy Chef Del's Books - https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B008VGSVMY/allbooks ★☆★ Help us remove dairy from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans! ★☆★ https://switch4good.org/dietary-guidelines-for-americans-2025/ ★☆★ Click the link below to support the ADD SOY Act! ★☆★ https://switch4good.org/add-soy-act/ ★☆★ Share the website and get your resources here ★☆★ https://kidsandmilk.org/ ★☆★ Send us a voice message and ask a question. Do you feel like you are juggling too many things between work, socializing, your health, family, etc. and something has to give? This may be the ideal time to take a step back, allow yourself to slow down and do less so you can achieve more. Tune in to learn more about what that looks like when it comes to your health and activity. This week, Jenn is talking about taking your foot off the gas when it comes to your health and wellness goals. She explains how to evaluate if you need to take a step back in your intensity (even if you feel like you're already balanced in your nutrition) - whether that's for a week, a month, or a season in order to show your body appreciation and allow it to rest and heal. Jenn explains how physiological stress can impact your hormones and how reverse dieting may be the next step in your wellness journey. She describes what is required during this phase and how you will know when you are done with the phase of less intensity. Tune in to learn more about reverse dieting and taking a step back! The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: [5:04] How do most people tend to approach weight management?[9:00] What are different phases to focus on? [11:41] What's the connection between consistency and intensity? [14:40] When might you want to step back from your current maintenance intensity? [18:24] How do you know if there is physiological stress happening? [21:43] Why do we use food as a way to fill needs that aren't actually physical stomach hunger?[26:44] What does it mean to be on the same team as our body? [37:35] What is reverse dieting and how can it impact our health?[46:22] What's required for this phase to serve you? [47:50] How long do you stay in this phase and how do you know when you're done?KEY TAKEAWAYS: [10:08] Our metabolisms don't like the same thing all the time. Surprises actually kick the body into working a little more. [36:40] The idea of achieving more by doing less is letting go of some of the things that we are holding onto, so that we can experience and hold the next thing that shows up. [39:57] When slowly adding more calories into your diet, it helps the body recover. It helps the body get out of that panic and out of that survival mode without shocking it. QUOTES: [11:07] “I talk all the time about living in the gray area, that in between, where we eat some and exercise some. That is really an area of balance and maintenance, that is in fact a long term strategy. Yet even in the bigger picture, there are times when each of these approaches fit, and a time when there's another one that fits.” - Jenn Trepeck[32:26] “We want to be on the same team as our body, instead of always fighting our body.” - Jenn Trepeck[34:44] “Be more connected to your inner self. Give enough time to rest, to go to nature, and with that, your body can open up and also absorb more love and nutrition into your body, which makes you less hungry and which also makes you more happy to move around. In that case, the weight will go down automatically.” - Nandar[46:19] “What's required for this phase to serve you? Recognizing that even here in this phase, consistency is important. We want to also remove the fear from food, remove the fear from eating more, and the way we can do that is focus on the nutrients.” - Jenn Trepeck[50:56] “Not every moment is a time to push. Sometimes even in a world of balance, we might choose to let things go a little more. You will know when you're ready to shift again.” Jenn Trepeck[51:20] “It's all about our self love. However you are feeling right now, if you are not feeling well, we have to take care of ourselves. It is not about how we look on the outside or how much we weigh on the scale, it's about how we are feeling right now, so that it's sustainable for the long run.” - NandarRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries Instagram
Today, we host a trailblazer in the world of sports and mentorship. With a professional basketball career that spanned the planet – including a stint with the Harlem Globetrotters and a Euroleague MVP award – Joseph Blair, also known as The Vegan Coach, brings experience and wisdom to his role as assistant coach for the Washington Wizards. Off the court, Joseph champions a plant-based lifestyle for its health benefits and its impact on the environment and animal welfare. He is outspoken and passionate, and that is reshaping how fans and athletes think about veganism. And be sure to check out his Instagram page to watch "The Vegan Diaries," where he takes you to vegan restaurants at home, around the country when he travels with the Wizards, and abroad. Join us as we learn more about Coach Joseph Blair, from his journey to plant-based living to his insights on how to inspire people, whether it's to play better ball or to eat vegan. “So to hate something enough to slaughter it, devour it, that's the next level of hate that we're taught. That is something that's taught by parents who say here, take that chicken and eat it. Why? Because the chicken's life means less than your life does. So it doesn't matter. We are the superior beings. We can overpower it. But isn't that the same thing with people when it comes down to racism, sexism, and anti-Semitism and that exact same thinking that is literally destroying our planet and our communities as a whole? So if we can alleviate that thinking completely, it has to start with our diet.” - Coach Joseph Blair What we discuss in this episode: - Insights from Coach Blair's time with the Harlem Globetrotters. - His journey to becoming vegan. - The transformative power of conscious living. - Coach Blair's diet and fasting practices. - How Coach Blair discusses veganism with his players. - The food culture within the NBA: what players and coaches eat, including on the road. - The inspiration behind "The Vegan Diaries." - Tips from Coach Blair for aspiring vegans or those curious about adopting a vegan lifestyle. Today's guest, Dr. James Cima, is a chiropractor with over 50 years of experience. He shares his journey from suffering severe back pain as a young man to becoming a chiropractor. Dr. Cima also discusses chiropractic care and its impact on overall health, how chiropractic can treat more than just physical pain, and his holistic approach to healthcare and living a long and healthy life. In this episode, we talk about: Dr. Cima's journey from experiencing severe back pain to becoming a chiropractor The importance of holistic healthcare and treating the person chemically, physically, mentally, and emotionally Role of nutrition in health and the importance of listening to your body's cravings Why the US healthcare system focuses on sickness instead of health and wellness Why healthcare costs are so high in the US How to live a long and healthy life until 150 years old Dr. Cima's new project for veterans healthcare Memorable Quotes “Health is a composite chemically, physically, mentally, emotionally, and you have to deal with all three sides.” “As long as you keep on taking care of the body chemically, physically and mentally emotionally, you're gonna be the one that's going to improve.” BIO: Born in New York City on October 10, 1948, I was one of the first wave of baby boomers. Growing up in New York City was a great challenge in many ways and prepared me well for life. I mean if you were not getting into fights, you had to use your street smarts to outsmart your enemies as well as the police. This prompted me to find another way, which was to stay in school, study hard, and become something. The truth is that I always wanted to be a doctor. As long as I can remember, that was what I wanted to be. It's funny how things worked out because years later, my wife told me she always wanted to marry a doctor. My early years were happy growing up in a tough, lower-middle-class ethnic mix of Italians, Irish, Germans, Polish Catholics, and Jewish people. Talk about bullying. That was all you experienced from the moment you left the safety of your apartment. From then on, you were fair game to anyone in the neighborhood, and you either fought like there was no tomorrow or there would be no tomorrow. So I developed a lot of street sense, knowing when to hit and when to run. I always hung around with a tough group of friends, which most people would call gangs. Whatever you call them, they were our protection, and I was part of their protection—a necessary evil. Of course growing up in Queens in the fifties through the seventies, you were always in awe of the wise guys, the Tony Soprano types. That intrigued me, but these guys played for real, and this was no TV show. One mistake and you were either dead or in jail, which was not so appealing. I am unsure how my life would have ended if it had not been for two defining moments. Turning Lemons into Lemonade My spinal injury and poor grades changed the destiny of my life. I suffered a severe, debilitating lower back injury in my early teens. I also had fair to mediocre grades in school. My advisor told me that I was not “college material” and recommended that I seek employment or join the armed forces during the Vietnam years or wind up in jail like some of my friends did. You could say that I was stuck between a rock and a hard place, with few, if any, options. I had no talents, and I didn't come from money. Somehow, my adviser asked me, “James, what do you like?” I told him I loved animals. He went over to this large file cabinet, searched through all the college files, pulled out one, and said, “Here is one school you might be able to get into if you pass an aptitude test.” Somehow I passed the test and instantly became college material. I was now a proud student enrolled in a state college's pre-veterinary program. From that day forward, I knew that I wanted to become a doctor and that I would not be any doctor but a doctor's doctor. I studied as hard as I could and raised my grades enough to get into Cornell University's pre-veterinary program. I graduated in the top 25 percent of my class. Not bad for not being college material. A Slight Shift in Direction During my early teen years, I developed severe back pain, which was thought to be congenital. I was born with a bad back, and because it was congenital, there was no way out. As I entered college, my back pain became debilitating to the point that something had to be done. My doctor did not want me to undergo surgery and suggested I tough it out, which I did, but you always heard stories about once you have a bad back you will always have a bad back. This was not fun to hear when you're eighteen, but it was true. One day it hit home while I was lying on the floor of my girlfriend's living room in severe pain when her father's friend asked me what was wrong. I told him my back was killing me, and he said don't worry, “It is going to get worse with age,” as he stepped over me and walked out the front door. Although it seemed cruel, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I knew he was right and that it was only going to get worse if I didn't correct the problem, but how? Had it not been for that epiphany, I probably would never have chosen the path I did. I decided to find out about back pain and was accidentally introduced to the field of chiropractic. I went to a doctor of chiropractic who helped me with my back problem. As I learned about the profession, I realized that they were able to treat many other health problems besides back pain. Well that just seemed to be the icing on the cake, because if I could just help people with low back pain, that in itself would have been a rewarding experience. That was it. I applied to what is now known as New York Chiropractic College, received my degree in 1976, and was off and running. As I was in my last year of school, I saw a quote from Thomas Edison about the doctor of the future: “The doctor of the future will give no medication but will interest his patients in diet, care of the human frame, and the cause and prevention of disease.” Although the definition was near perfect, there was no how-to manual that explained how the doctor was going to treat his patients. From that day forward I was hooked, and I wanted to become the doctor of the future. I devoted my life to health and wellness, and forty years later I have created a health and wellness program that lives up to Mr. Edison's vision of the doctor of the future. In 1980, I left New York City with my new bride Gloria, and, moved to beautiful Palm Beach, Florida. My wife and I started my practice in 1981 and raised a family of four— Natalie, Tiffany, James, and Alexandra, two are chiropractic physicians and now practice with me. We have 9 grandchildren with one on the way, and we hope to add a third generation to our practice. Our commitment is to offer the best health care available, which we always strive to achieve. Whether it is through education, treatment, or recommendations, our goal is to improve the health of this great nation, one patient at a time. In episode 204, Prep Dish founder Allison Schaaf welcomes nutritionist and health coach guest Aimee Gallo to discuss how eating more protein could help you lose weight and keep it off. Aimee Gallo is founder of Vibrance Nutrition and Fitness and is a practicing nutritionist and health coach focussed in the fields of metabolic health and weight loss, along with food intolerance and sports nutrition. She loves helping to find out what will work for her clients in a sustainable way. Aimee featured a post entitled “Eat More, Lose Weight” on her blog, in which she explains that people whose health goals include losing weight need to, in fact, eat more protein. She unpacks the science behind this, noting that protein prevents muscle loss, which is the key to metabolism. The other key nutrient in the weight loss equation is produce, which provides micronutrients that assist in optimum metabolic health. At every meal, Aimee recommends asking yourself these two questions: “Where is my protein?” and “where is my produce?” She also suggests focusing on what you're moving toward, rather than avoiding, as this is much more inspiring and sustainable in your health journey. A third possible focus for losing weight might also include making sure you're consuming enough calories. Aimee has found that some clients she works with may have lost weight but plateaued. In these cases, it's often a bite-by-bite, bit-by-bit approach of increasing portion sizes for both protein and produce that helps clients reach their optimal goals. Looking to incorporate protein into your diet? For the month of January, Prep Dish has created Super Fast, Protein Boost meal plans that make getting 30g of protein at meals (even breakfast!) both easy and delicious. “Energy is motion. You have got to start moving. Start moving for yourself and I know it is hard to get out of bed but it's also hard laying there for the rest of your life and spending it miserable. You have to choose your hard. What way do you want to go? You know that once you get done with that workout, you will feel a little better. Accomplish something and write a to-do list, add something else to the list and accomplish that more. Anything to be 1% better to get to your goals.” -Coach Daisy If you are doing it on your own and not seeing fast results

Answer: No. You don't need to worry about soaking grains or nuts or seeds.Believe it or not, phytates are actually super beneficial phytonutrients! We will take a much closer look in today's episode amidst the short series diving into the myth of the plant based "antinutrients." You can learn more about Oxalates in episode #365 and Lectins in episode #366.So, what are phyates/phytic acid? What foods are rich in phytates? What are the alleged problems with phytate consumption?Should I be worried about eating too many phytates? (answer: NO!)What sort of health benefits to phytates offer? These are some of the questions that we dig into in today's episode. Here are the highlights.Phytates are antioxidant compounds packed in the seeds of all plantsPhyayes have a strong affinity for metals (i.e. minerals) similar to oxalatesSoaking nuts/seeds/grains is an effective way to lower phytate content in these foods... but maybe think twice before doing that!Eating MORE phytates is protective against osteoporosis, cancer, diabetes, and more. The gut microbiome adapts overtime to increase phytate consuming organisms to aid in mineral balanceWe hope this information helps you stick confidently with your whole food plant based eating! In another episode of debunking the nonsense... we're talking about LECTINS. Have you heard of them ?If you are clued into nutritional trends, you probably have. Chances are, they've also been represented in a negative light. Like oxalates that we talked about last week (Episode #365), Lectins are another class of plant phytonutrients that get a very bad reputation as being an "antinutrient" blocking nutrient absorption and contributing to health issues. One of the most famous lectins is RICIN - ricin is a toxic lectin isolated from the Castor Bean that has been used at points throughout history as a poison. During WWI the US Military investigated the use of Ricin as an agent of biological warfare. Ricin's ability to broadly block protein synthesis is one of the main mechanisms that make it toxic and deadly. But what about the lectins found in beans, whole grains, nuts/seeds, and other fruits and veggies? Some of these “lectin-rich foods” have been demonized by many so called “nutrition experts.” Maybe one of the most prominent lectin fearmongers is Dr. Steven Gundry, author of The Plant Paradox, a book that told you how to be afraid of eating plants and why to eat animals and oils instead… oh ya… and if you follow along, you've got to be sure to also take his supplements if you wanted to be healthy! In this episode we cover some of the lectin myths as well as the science that actually demonstrates the health-promoting powers of eating lectins (of course I'm not talking about the toxins like Ricin…).Some highlights from the episodeThe foods that are highest in lectins and why they might get a bad reputation for causing health issues.A simple 10-minute strategy for eliminating the majority of lectins from your foods. What lectins do to the gut to create numerous beneficial adaptations to the microbiomeThe science proving the anti-cancer, weight optimizing, and immune boosting benefits of lectins What to do if you experience sensitivity to foods like those rich in lectinsLinks to some more good stuff- Join the Eat More, Weigh Less Challenge! https://www.alter.health/wfpb-challenge-eat-more-weigh-less - Get the Alter Health weekly WFPB Meal Guides: https://www.alter.health/meal-guides- Cleanse with Us during the next Alter Health Cleanse: https://www.alter.health/cleanse- Work with us in the Thrive on Plants program: https://www.alter.health/thrive-on-plants
Oxalates or oxalic acid are a phytonutrient found in pretty much all plants. They have become a nutritional supervillain of sorts, getting the blame for all sorts of health issues from mineral absorption issues to kidney stones to vague gut health and systemic inflammatory conditions. Why is it then that plant eaters who tend to consume far more oxalates than non plant eaters don't actually suffer from these alleged oxalate issues?Well, as is often the case the science is complex. However, the take away message is simple! In the context of an acidic environment with dysbiosis of the gut microbiome, oxalates may well contribute to some of these alleged issues! In the context of an alkalinizing plant based lifestyle, oxalates are never to fear.Topics covered in this episode:What are oxalates, anyways?!Which foods are highest in oxalate content (hint: it is NOT Kale!)Why high oxalate foods are actually also high in mineral content (and also high in vitamin K!)The alleged issues with oxalate consumption and why they may or may not manifestReasons to be mindful of oxalate-rich foods and how to increase consumption healthfullyHow we can create more oxalobacter bacteria in the gut that actually work with us to break down oxalates Links to some more good stuff- Join the Eat More, Weigh Less Challenge! https://www.alter.health/wfpb-challenge-eat-more-weigh-less - Get the Alter Health weekly WFPB Meal Guides: https://www.alter.health/meal-guides- Cleanse with Us during the next Alter Health Cleanse: https://www.alter.health/cleanse- Work with us in the Thrive on Plants program: https://www.alter.health/thrive-on-plants

No wonder you're suffering from gas, bloating, acid reflux and even severe conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). To complicate things more, health marketers would have you believe that if you simply take a fiber supplement and eat some probiotic-enriched yogurt, you can correct the mess fast–but the problem is far more complex.
