This is our last stop for French movies this month and the last of our most romantic week under September's EUROPEAN VACATION theme. This movie bounces around from France to Spain and is one of the most bizarre romantic comedies out there. Pretty impressive for any director to hit it like this at the age of 80 but Luis Buñuel was a different breed. Fernando Rey plays a well-to-do widower who falls for a poor but beautiful 19 year old who lives with her mother. His obsessions overwhelm him as everything seems to be going spectacularly except he just can't get that one thing that many men want. Despite that they can't seem to keep away from each other. This woman seems so subtle and elegant or then again maybe she's actually sultry and emotive? It's like she's two different people and why does she hang out with those street boys? Is she really a virgin? We're discussing Luis Buñuel's final film, the 1977 romantic comedy, “THAT OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE” starring Fernando Rey and most notably featuring Carole Bouquet and Angela Molina both playing the female lead, “Conchita”. Also featuring terrorism! This is probably peak “domestic violence in a comedy” that we will probably ever get. Not saying it's played for laughs but maybe that's what wealthy middle aged European men will do when they don't actually get to sleep with the young woman in the movie. Such chastitiy is a rare occurrence in these Euro flicks. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/libreriaradio/support

Gene Hackman crosses the pond to catch The Frog that avoided capture during a big time U.S. drug bust in the 1975 sequel French Connection II. But will it be any easier to find Fernando Rey on his home turf when the New York cop doesn't speak the language and Marseilles police don't condone his brutal investigative methods? And can fill-in director John Frankenheimer (Manchurian Candidate) replicate the adrenalized rush of the original car chases when so many characters are strung out on smack? You'll know the score when you Listen Now!

Put up the Bat Signal! It's time for Matt, Alex, and Rocco to investigate the films that inspired Matt Reeves while making 'The Batman,' beginning with this hard-nosed crime thriller that won Best Picture. William Friedkin surrounds himself with New York's "Finest" for an "all gas, no brakes" approach to shooting a cop drama. And the Academy was like, "Sure, yes, this is exactly what we want right now." Gene Hackman, Roy Scheider, and Fernando Rey hold on for dear life through 'The French Connection' (1971).We dig into what qualities that Popeye Doyle and Bruce Wayne might share, what this kind of detective work foreshadows about the early crimefighting of Batman, and we find parallels in Frank Miller's iconic "Batman: Year One" series. In this first edition of the Director's Highlight series, Aric and Marisa take on selected films of the controversial juggernaut Luis Buñuel. They spotlight three memorable periods of his long career: his surrealist origins in Paris, his filmmaking in Mexico, and his great late career run of films produced in France. These eras of Buñuel's career are examined through six films: UN CHIEN ANDALOU (1929), Buñuel and Salvador Dali's surrealist experimental short, VIRIDIANA (1961), the acclaimed Palme d'Or winning critique of religous charity, THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL (1962), an absurd satire of aristocratic norms, THE MILKY WAY (1969), a spiritual road film questioning the significance of religious virtues, THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE (1972), a film about an illogical dinner party that turns catastrophic, and THE PHANTOM OF LIBERTY (1974), a film arranged by dream-logic that passes through episodes of history. It's time for another Listener's Choice episode, and boy, do we have a doozy this week. Listener Diego Luis Contreras López wanted us to talk about a film from Spain and settled on Luis Buñuel's return to his home country (and immediate departure thereafter) with his 1961 film “Viridiana.” Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we delve into our sixth listener's choice with “Viridiana.” We talk about our previous (and limited) experiences with Buñuel and what our expectations were with this film, contrasting that with how we ended up feeling about the film. We discuss the many things Buñuel was doing and saying with this film and how that ties into the actual story of Viridiana. We chat about the performances, notably Silvia Pinal, Fernando Rey, Francisco Rabal and Margarita Lozano, and how much we liked all of them. We debate the look of the film and José F. Aguayo's cinematography and how it was affected by Buñuel's desire to put the importance of coming in on time and under budget ahead of sloppy filmmaking sometimes. And we look at the film's release, the reaction to it from the Catholic Church and its banishment from several countries leading to more of an underground screening history after its win at Cannes. It's a film in which we found a lot of meat to discuss and are thrilled to add it to the films we've discussed. Tune in!

It's our ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY, everyone! That's right, we've been doing the "Movies We Like" podcast for one year now, and what better way to celebrate than with the next in our Great Car Chase series—William Friedkin's 1971 Best Picture Oscar-winner, "The French Connection." Join us—Pete Wright and Andy Nelson—as we celebrate one of our absolute favorite films. We talk about the fantastic car chase in this film and how Friedkin and his producer Philip D'Antoni—who also produced "Bullitt"—worked hard to come up with a way to kick it up a notch and create what is now regarded one of the best car chases in cinema history. We chat about Friedkin's documentary background and what he brought to the table, creating a gritty vibe and a new style of filmmaking that would change the nature of cop films for years to come. We discuss the fantastic performances all through the film—Gene Hackman, Roy Scheider, Fernando Rey, etc.—and how they tapped into this gritty realism by working with their real-life counterparts. We also, of course, talk about the real French connection case that this was based on, who was involved, how they helped with this film, and how the film and the real story differ. And we look at 1971's other cop films and Oscar nominees to see how this film compares. It's top-notch filmmaking and certainly a movie we like. We have a blast talking about it and hope you enjoy listening.
