Kaitlin Collins left the White House with some lumps to the noggin yesterday. As President Trump and El Salvador President Nayib Bukele held a press conference, Collins asked about deported gang member Abrego Garcia. Well, Pam Bondi, Marco Rubio and President Bukele all teed-off on Collins and her reporting. The "Maryland man" is actually a citizen of El Salvador and was ordered to be deported in 2019. On today's show we are going to take a look at our national borders and what a difference a president can make. Ron Vitiello is the senior advisor to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection with the Department of Homeland Security. Mark Hall is the Deputy U.S. Border Czar, working directly with Tom Homan. With decades of experience in border protection and law enforcement, both men point to our robust laws concerning immigration. Our immigration laws and procedures are fair and work when they are enforced. Now that President Trump is enforcing our laws, what was 7,000 crossing per day under Biden has plummeted to below 300 under President Trump. Ron and Mark fill us in on cartel activity, stopping deadly fentanyl precursors from China and how Mexico and Canada have stepped up to do their part. With exceptional leadership from the likes of Pam Bondi, Tom Homan and Kristi Noem, we might already have the most secure border in U.S. history. The President aims to relocate the department's core functions, though the moves would still likely trigger legal challenges. President Trump's phone calls with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin have led to both sides agreeing to stop targeting energy infrastructure—a step the Trump Administration describes as a "movement toward peace" in the conflict. In August of 1992, the US Marshals Services were called to a property in the remote Boundary County of Idaho, called Ruby Ridge, to arrest Randy Weaver who had failed to make his court appearance for gun charges. The exchange between the Weavers and the US Marshals soon turned violent and the FBI Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) was called in to help. Over 11 days, 3 people would end up losing their lives and the events that took place during the standoff would be hotly debated for many years to come. What was his name? How old was he? Where did he come from? What happened to him? These are a few of the questions concerning the man known as William Dempsey. Eyewitnesses saw him murder Deputy U.S. Marshal Isaac Evans, and a jury convicted him of killing Marie Lavor, but did he murder others? Was he a young man named William Dempsey, as he claimed, or did he steal the real William Dempsey's identity? One hundred years later, these questions continue to elude historians. The Fugitive (1993) is one of those films that perfectly encapsulates the tension and pulse-pounding excitement of a great action-thriller. Directed by Andrew Davis and starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones, this movie has earned its spot as a quintessential ‘90s action film, but it does more than just deliver spectacular stunts and edge-of-your-seat chases. At its core, The Fugitive is a cat-and-mouse game wrapped in a deeper story of justice, survival, and determination. The film explores themes of innocence and perseverance, driven by dynamic performances and sharp direction.Harrison Ford stars as Dr. Richard Kimble, a Chicago vascular surgeon falsely accused of murdering his wife. The movie opens with a gripping flashback to the fateful night of her death, immediately setting a tense and moody tone. This tension carries through the entire film as Kimble's stoic, determined search for the truth parallels Deputy U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard's relentless pursuit. The Performances: A Duel Between Ford and JonesHarrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones's powerhouse performances are The Fugitive's heart. Ford's portrayal of Dr. Kimble gives the character a sympathetic resilience. His understated but deeply emotional approach perfectly embodies a man thrown into extraordinary circumstances. Throughout the movie, you can feel Kimble's grief and frustration bubbling beneath the surface, but Ford keeps him controlled, focused, and believable. He's not an action hero in the typical sense—he's a regular man, resourceful and clever, but constantly on the run, thinking a step ahead while navigating an impossible situation.Tommy Lee Jones, on the other hand, is a force of nature as U.S. Marshal Gerard. His Oscar-winning performance is pure intensity, but with just the right touch of humour and wit to make him endlessly watchable. Jones takes what could have been a by-the-numbers antagonist role and breathes life into it. His portrayal of Gerard is marked by unrelenting professionalism—he's laser-focused on catching Kimble. Yet, you sense that he also respects him, even though they're on opposite sides of the law. Gerard's famous line, “I don't care,” when Kimble claims his innocence, perfectly encapsulates the no-nonsense persona Jones brings to the character. Gerard's dedication is to his job, not the morality of Kimble's situation.Cinematography and Direction: Crafting the ChaseAndrew Davis' masterful direction makes The Fugitive 1993 stand out even more. The movie's pacing is relentless, rarely giving the audience a moment to breathe. From the spectacular train crash sequence early in the film to the tense scenes in the Chicago streets, Davis keeps the momentum driving forward, heightening the stakes at every turn. The cinematography by Michael Chapman plays a crucial role in this, adding layers of visual tension. The film moves from one vividly captured location to the next, whether it's the urban sprawl of Chicago or the more rural, rugged terrain where Kimble initially escapes. Chapman often uses tight, claustrophobic shots of Kimble on the run to amplify the sense of desperation, juxtaposed with wide, sweeping shots that emphasize just how much ground the protagonist needs to cover to clear his name. The urban chase scenes through Chicago are particularly well-staged, providing the sense that Kimble could be found at any moment, hiding in plain sight in a city that's both his home and a trap.A Puzzle That Unfolds Layer by LayerThe Fugitive is not just a film about a chase—it's also a puzzle. The mystery surrounding Kimble's wife's murder slowly unravels as Kimble follows leads, figures out motives, and pieces together the conspiracy that led to his false imprisonment. The screenplay, adapted from the 1960s television series of the same name, does an excellent job of weaving this investigative element into the broader action. This adds an intellectual dimension to the film, as Kimble uses his medical expertise and calm under pressure to unearth the truth while dodging his pursuers. In this sense, The Fugitive becomes more than just a typical thriller. There's a deeper story here about corruption and greed, as Kimble discovers that his wife's murder was connected to a pharmaceutical conspiracy involving his colleagues. The narrative has enough twists and turns to keep viewers engaged without becoming too convoluted. By the time we reach the climax, all the pieces fall into place, but it's the journey getting there that makes the movie so compelling.A Movie That Stands the Test of TimeOne of the reasons The Fugitive 1993 remains a classic is how well it holds up today. Many action films from that era can feel dated due to over-the-top effects or exaggerated performances, but The Fugitive strikes a timeless balance. The action is realistic, the story grounded, and the performances nuanced enough that the film never feels out of place, even three decades later.Part of the movie's lasting appeal is its restraint—there are no unnecessary explosions, no overly dramatic set-pieces for the sake of spectacle. Instead, every action sequence feels earned, serving the narrative rather than distracting from it. The film's iconic train crash, for example, was created with practical effects, making it feel raw and visceral compared to today's CGI-heavy action movies. That dedication to realism is something that still resonates with audiences.Additionally, the themes of justice and redemption are universal. Dr. Kimble's fight to clear his name is one that people can relate to, even if the stakes aren't as high in their own lives. His resourcefulness, grit, and unwavering moral compass are qualities that continue to make him a hero worth rooting for. At the same time, Gerard's determination and professionalism make him more than just an antagonist—he's a protagonist in his own right, leading to a rare instance where both the hunter and the hunted are equally captivating.Impact on Pop CultureThe Fugitive 1993 has had a significant impact on pop culture, not just for its thrilling story but also for its memorable lines and characters. Tommy Lee Jones' Gerard has become a benchmark for the relentless lawman archetype, and the movie's famous line, “I don't care,” continues to resonate in countless tributes and homages. The movie was a box-office success and earned multiple Academy Award nominations, including a Best Picture nod—rare for an action-thriller of its kind. Its influence is still felt in the genre today, as many films and TV shows borrow from its style of combining action with mystery. Even modern cat-and-mouse stories owe a debt to The Fugitive, proving its lasting relevance in the world of cinema.ConclusionThe Fugitive 1993 is a masterclass in tension, storytelling, and performance. Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones are perfectly matched as two men on opposite sides of the law, and the film's relentless pacing and engaging mystery make it a gripping watch from start to finish. Even after all these years, it remains one of the best examples of how to craft a smart, exhilarating action-thriller that keeps the audience guessing while delivering plenty of heart-pounding moments. For fans of intelligent, character-driven suspense, The Fugitive is a must-watch.Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com.au/

In 2010, Justice Sotomayor joined a dissenting opinion in McDonald v. Chicago that stated, “In sum, the Framers did not write the Second Amendment in order to protect a private right of armed self-defense.” Meanwhile, Sotomayor's armed security team just sh*t a would-be carjacker outside her house. Yet, regular citizens don't have the right to private armed self defense in her view. Rules for thee and not for me. From The Daily Beast: Two deputy U.S. Marshals thought to be guarding Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor's home in Washington, D.C. shot a suspected carjacker who pulled out a gun last week, officials said. The U.S. Marshals office said that suspect Kentrell Flowers, 18, allegedly walked up to one of the deputies' cars at around 1:15 a.m. on July 5 and pointed a gun at the bodyguard. The Marshal fired four shots, hitting Flowers in the mouth. Flowers was taken to hospital for treatment and arrested. “The Deputy U.S. Marshals involved in the shooting incident were part of the unit protecting the residences of U.S. Supreme Court justices. As a general practice, the U.S. Marshals don't discuss specifics of protective details,” Abigail Meyer, a spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service, said in a statement to The Hill. Authorities have not suggested Flowers was intentionally targeting Sotomayor or the security detail. In June 2023, 26-year-old California resident Nicholas John Roske was arrested near Brett Kavanaugh's home and charged with attempted murder after he told officials he wanted to kill the conservative Supreme Court justice following the leaked draft majority opinion on Roe v. Wade.

President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that the U.S. would not supply Israel with some weapons if it moved forward with a ground invasion of Rafah. The announcement came hours after Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed that the government had already paused a shipment of bombs to Israel over fears of an imminent offensive in the southern Gaza city where more than a million Palestinians are sheltering. Israel has been ramping up its attacks on Rafah over the last few days, all while negotiators frantically try to reach a ceasefire deal in Cairo. Ben Rhodes, former Deputy U.S. national security advisor to President Obama and co-host of Pod Save The World, talks about how much leverage Biden really has over Israel's military operations. Ashley's Dad was her favorite person in the world. He drove fast cars and sold them for a living. He was a scratch golfer and the love of her Mum's life. Ashley thought she knew him better than anyone. But at 38, she found out he wasn't who he said he was. Inspired by his favorite movie the Thomas Crown Affair, he had pulled off a robbery in Cleveland then disappeared. It turns out he evaded the authorities for half a century, living in their sleepy Massachusetts town. His secret upended his family's life, but another family's too. Because from the moment this 20-year-old vault teller escaped with $215,000 in 1969, Deputy U.S. Marshal John Elliott made it his life's mission to bring him to justice. After he retired, his son even took up his mantle. For this six episode podcast, host Jonathan Hirsch teams up with Ashley Randele to unravel the mystery of how her Dad got away with it, and ultimately, why he left behind everyone and everything to start over. Good ol' Bass Reeves. From HBO's mini series Watchman, to the Lone Ranger, to the many unanswered questions that have followed. The duality of Bass Reeves' life as the first Deputy U.S. Marshall as a formerly enslaved person comes to ahead later in his career as racial tensions rose in the late 1800s. Astronomers Find Exoplanet That May Be Covered In WaterScientists using the James Webb Space Telescope made an exciting discovery this week: Exoplanet K2-18 b, 120 light years away from our solar system, could be covered by a water ocean, similar to Earth. Astronomers say this could be a big leap in our exploration of life on other planets. This news comes amid another JWST discovery: The earliest black holes seem to be much larger than black holes today. This news also provides evidence that black holes can form without stars, a theorized phenomenon that has never been directly observed.Joining Ira to talk about these and other science stories of the week is Tim Revell, Deputy U.S. Editor of New Scientist, based in New York, New York. What Radioactive Animals Teach Us About Nuclear FalloutWhen you hear the words “radioactive wildlife,” your brain probably jumps to Chernobyl's wolves, which—despite the odds—are still thriving at the site of the nuclear disaster. Or maybe you've heard of the rat snakes in Fukushima that pick up radioactive contamination as they slither around.Well, it's time to add two more to that list of radioactive critters: turtles and wild boar. They're the subjects of two new studies that looked at radioactivity in wildlife and mapped out where it came from. Ira talks with Dr. Cyler Conrad, archaeologist at Pacific Northwest National Lab in Richland, Washington who worked on the turtle study, and Dr. Georg Steinhauser, professor of applied radiochemistry at the Vienna University of Technology in Austria, who studied boar. They chat about the two studies, how wildlife can clue us into radioactive contamination, and what we can learn from critters in nuclear fallout zones. Waiting for the Bus in Houston is Hot. And Dangerous. It was a hot summer day and Glory Medina and her daughter Jade, who was 3 at the time, were running a quick errand at the grocery store near their apartment in Gulfton. They had taken the bus and once they arrived, the two of them faced a giant unshaded parking lot, the black asphalt radiating heat into their faces as they walked across it.The blast of AC felt cool as they entered the store, and Medina bent down to lift her daughter into the grocery cart. That's when she noticed Jade's face was red, almost purple.“I got scared,” Medina said in Spanish, remembering that day four years ago.Read more at sciencefriday.com. The Psychology Behind Wide Receivers' Jersey NumbersFootball season is officially here, with the NFL's first game kicking off last Sunday. And if you've been watching the sport for a long time, you may have noticed some changes: better-padded helmets meant to reduce serious brain injury, new “sticky” gloves that make it easier for players to hold the ball, and lighter-weight jerseys that make it harder for other players to grab onto. But you'll also notice the numbers on those jerseys are different, too.For most of the NFL's history, wide receivers could only pick jersey numbers between 80 and 89. But in 2004, the league relaxed this policy, allowing players to also pick numbers between 10 and 19. Many players preferred these smaller values explaining that the 1 looked slimmer than the 8, and made them feel thinner and faster. As of 2019, 80% of wide receivers made the switch. But is there an actual association between smaller numbers and perception of body size?To investigate whether this was fact or superstition, Dr. Ladan Shams, professor of psychology, bioengineering, and neuroscience at UCLA, ran a study that found those wide receivers were onto something: the results suggest there is a correlation between smaller numbers and perceived body size. Her team's research was published in PLOS One. She joins Ira to talk about the study and what it could tell us about implicit bias. Bill Tilghman grew up idolizing Wild Bill Hickok. When Tilghman was 24, he became a full-time lawman in Dodge City during the peak of its wild years as one of the wickedest towns in the West. He worked with the Earp brothers and the Masterson brothers, and occasionally, Doc Holliday. And he lured Wyatt into a political fiasco known as the Gray County War before moving to Oklahoma and accepting a Deputy U.S. Marshal's badge. Guests:Ed Felten (twitter.com/edfelten)Tushar Jain (twitter.com/TusharJain_)Host:Richard Yan (twitter.com/gentso09)Today's motion is “We should always reduce MEV on blockchains."Generally speaking, MEV or Miner Extractable Value is a way for miners to derive additional revenue by executing transactions based on information in the mem pool. For instance, say a miner notices a transaction in the mem pool waiting to be included in a block. Maybe this is a transaction to buy up some cheap Ethereum. The miner can execute that purchase themselves, at the expense of the trader that placed the original order. And of course, this means value got extracted by the miner, transferred from the original trader. This behavior pattern, of course, applies to both miners and validators. Or to all block producers, to be generic. The question is, is MEV an inevitability of blockchain systems? Are there ways to reduce it? Are our resources better spent creating systems that reduce as much MEV as possible, or should we acknowledge their existence and try to distribute that MEV more fairly, or at least transparently? Our two guests today include a layer-2 founder and a VC well-versed in this area. It will be a great discussion. If you're into crypto and like to hear two sides of the story, be sure to also check out our previous episodes. When President Joe Biden met the press on January 19th he was candid when addressing consequences for Russia if it attacked Ukraine. “It depends on what [Putin] does as to what extent we're going to be able to get total unity on the NATO front.” The White House quickly cleaned up what he “meant” to say. In the days since official statements continue to stress NATO solidarity but questions remain. For example British aircraft carrying weapons to Ukraine flew “around” Germany sparking media questions about Berlin being onboard for support to Kiev, despite Defense Ministry denials it restricted the flights. That was followed by the resignation of Germany's Navy chief over controversial remarks about the threat to Ukraine. Writing for the Center for European Policy Analysis, Oxana Schmies spoke of “Germany's paralyzing fear of war,” and warned that for the new government it was “worryingly clear that forging a united Russia policy is difficult and marred by underlying disagreement. Can the WTO and G20 do anything about it? Moderator: Rem Korteweg, Senior Research Fellow, Clingendael Institute Panellists: Jennifer Hillman of the Council on Foreign Relations and Georgetown Law Center Rufus Yerxa, former Deputy U.S. Trade Representative and current President of the National Foreign Trade Council This podcast episode was recorded on June 16 2020. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to place the world economy under great strain, supply chains fragility, resurgent protectionism and continued U.S.-China trade war all cast a gloomy shadow over the future of multilateral trade…and whether the World Trade Organization or the G20 can do anything about it. In this podcast, moderator Rem Korteweg of the Clingendael Institute is joined by Professor Jennifer Hillman of the Council on Foreign Relations and Georgetown Law Center, and Ambassador Rufus Yerxa, former Deputy U.S. Trade Representative and current President of the National Foreign Trade Council. Listen as our panel discusses how the international trading system is coping with the COVID-19 pandemic, the structural problems facing institutions such as the World Trade Organization, and what role the United States might play in this going forward. Can the multilateral trade system point to a way forward for global economic recovery once the pandemic is over? Will the stress that COVID-19 placed upon global medical supply chains spotlight the opportunity to promote world health as a factor of global commerce? And perhaps most importantly, can the U.S.-China trade war be put back into a multilateral context? __________ The views and opinions expressed in this podcast series are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of American International Group, Inc. or its subsidiaries or affiliates (“AIG”). Alva Hank Worley - McDuff Accomplice The U.S. Marshals Service Task Force locates one of McDuff's prison pals. Every night, Deputy U.S. Marshals Parnell and Mike McNamara, along with U.S. federal prosecutor Bill Johnston, roll through the underbelly of Central Texas rousting parolees. Unlike the horse-bound Texas's posses of the past, the Marshals drive an SUV bristling with weapons. It's called "Big Foot". They use a technique called "driving them up" to break down one of McDuff's prison pals, who is also out on parole. It pays off when the parolee admits that he was McDuff's accomplice in the abduction and murder of Colleen Reed from an Austin carwash. You will hear the masterful confession extracted by Tim Steglich. At that time, he was a criminal investigator for the Bell County Sheriff's Department and a crack interrogator. Steglich extracts a confession that breaks the case wide open. It is a blood-chilling "Journey Into Darkness."
