In this final episode of the mini-series on forgotten doctrines of spiritual formation, Kyle explores the doctrine of sanctification. He highlights that while sanctification is not forgotten in the same way as the previous “forgotten doctrines,” it is often misunderstood and not properly grounded in scripture. Kyle emphasizes that sanctification is not a self-help project, but a work of God in us. He discusses the distinction between definitive sanctification and progressive sanctification, and the importance of ordering our understanding of salvation around Christ. Kyle also addresses the misconception that sanctification is solely about growth and emphasizes the need for a proper theology of holiness.Books Mentioned: Don Payne, Already SanctifiedKyle Strobel, Jonathan Edwards's Theology: A ReinterpretationKyle Strobel, Formed for the Glory of God: Learning from the Spiritual Practices of Jonathan EdwardsChapters00:00 Introduction to the Doctrine of Sanctification06:23 Taking Sanctification for Granted08:22 Reducing the Gospel to Justification13:16 Definitive Sanctification vs. Progressive Sanctification18:02 Sanctification as a Degreed Property20:38 The Importance of a Theology of Holiness22:36 Ordering Sanctification Around Christ26:28 Walking by Faith, Not by Sight29:16 Next Season: Spiritual Formation and the Church Get full access to Kyle's Formation Substack at kylestrobel.substack.com/subscribe

In this conversation, Kyle discusses the concept of the sanctification gap and its implications for the Christian life. Looking at Richard Lovelace's account and well as John Coe's development, Kyle attends to how we can utilize this category fruitfully in our own formation. Kyle emphasizes the importance of drawing near to God in the reality of who we are, rather than turning to oneself as a way to generate or mimic an ideal. He encourages a holistic approach to spiritual theology that incorporates insights from the broader Christian tradition.00:00 Introduction and Background05:21 The Rich Tradition of Spiritual Theology07:20 The Experiential Gap and the Importance of Drawing Near09:45 The Role of Spiritual Theology in the Christian Life14:01 Embracing the Wisdom of the Christian Tradition16:34 Moving from an Idealistic to an Evangelical Approach21:48 Recognizing Our Need for Forgiveness24:22 Navigating the Sanctification Gap in PrayerResources mentioned: Richard Lovelace, Dynamics of Spiritual Life: An Evangelical Theology of Renewal.John Coe, “Spiritual Theology: A Theological-Experiential Methodology for Bridging the Sanctification Gap” in The Journal of Spiritual Formation & Soul Care 2:1 (2009).Kyle Strobel, Formed for the Glory of God: Learning from the Spiritual Practices of Jonathan Edwards. The His & Her Money Show: Managing Money, Marriage, and Everything In Between
In the journey of faith, there are moments when we may find ourselves grappling with the disconcerting feeling that God is not being obedient to our wishes or desires, seemingly unresponsive to our earnest prayers. In these challenging moments, doubt and uncertainty can cast shadows upon our faith, leaving us questioning our beliefs and relationship with the Divine. However, during these moments of spiritual disquiet, we are invited to embark on a profound exploration of our faith, seeking deeper insights and understanding of God's mysterious ways. It is through navigating these difficult passages that we may ultimately discover the profound lessons of patience, trust, and humility, unraveling the true essence of our relationship with the Divine and finding solace in the wisdom of surrendering to a greater plan beyond our comprehension. In this episode of The His and Her Money Show, we are joined by Albert Tate, the founding and lead pastor of Fellowship Church in Los Angeles County, California, to talk about his latest book: Disobedient God. Pastor Albert shares his motivation behind writing the book: Disobedient God, how he bounced back from the disappointment of what God chose to do, ways to assess our relationship with god, and learning to be patient with God during the hard times. He also talks about the importance of acknowledging our pain and disappointments when Disobedient God shows up and how we can build a strong relationship with God during tough times. The unknown is so difficult for our human capacity lol We want to know what is coming. We want to plan and have a plan of attack for all the variables. Especially as mothers we want to be prepared so that our kids and families are safe. When we keep all our ducks in a row it makes us feel safe and in control. Which is a facade right? Like, deep down we know we aren't in control. Which I think makes us hold tighter to what wehave instead of leaning into our creator and trusting that no matter what HE has it all figured out. He's got it. And He is ultimately the only one who is FULLY trustworthy! Psalm 18:30As for God, His way is blameless; The word of the Lord is tried; He is a shield to all who take refuge in HimHow do we trust and surrender?1) Acknowledge He is Sovereign and we need Jesus!2) Release the fear and control3)Build intimate relationship with Him4)Embrace obedienceI understand that this doesn't come naturally so we need to makeSurrendering and trusting a daily practice. Giving Him your dreams and goals, releasing your family, kids, marriage to Him on the daily. Speaking out over and over “I trust you God” Declaring scripture to reinforce these beliefs in your mind, heart and soul so that you can come in alignment with God's will for your life!Psalm 37:5 Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Our biggest challenge to our faith is WHEN the PROMISE is DELAYED! You see, delayed promises will either WEAKEN or STRENGTHEN our FAITH. The true genuineness of our faith will be revealed when we respond to delayed promises! In our study we continue looking at the example of Abram as he struggled with delayed promises, and through his struggles he learned to strengthen his faith. In today’s study pastor Alexander will identify at least five things Abram did to strengthen his faith that we too can do to strengthen ours.

Welcome to New Hope! We're glad to have you join us this morning. If this is your first time joining us, welcome! We're excited to share our Sunday service with you online. We believe that a weekly rhythm of gathering with other followers of Jesus is a key component of doing life together - and we want to gather with you on Sundays! We invite you to join us next weekend in person at 9am or 11am.
This weekend, we'll continue our celebration of Jesus' resurrection and we'll conclude the sermon series we've called “GOD: Learning to Know Him Better.” In this last sermon, we focus on the glory of God. God's glory is a prominent theme in the Bible. Depending on the Bible translation you use, “glory” can be found in at least 350 verses. Like God's greatness, God's glory is unfathomable to the limitations of the human mind and yet it is also deeply personal and personally encouraging. We will get a glimpse of God's glory in this sermon, but that glimpse should be enough to overflow your soul if your mind and heart are open. What is God's glory? To answer that question, we turn to the Old Testament book of Exodus and to a story that you may know, at least in part. Read Exodus 32-34 as you prepare for worship this weekend! Ask God to show you His glory!
As parents, we have the incredible responsibility of teaching our children about God. It's one of the most important things we can do for them. But it's not always easy. We may not know where to start or how to make it interesting for our kids. In this episode, we'll discuss the importance of teaching your kids who God is and what He has done. We'll look at the story of Judges 2 to see how God's people forgot Him and suffered the consequences. And, we will reflect on our own lives to remember stories of what God has done for us so we can share it with our children. Love: Reflect on what God has done for you: today, this past week, the last month, last year, and each decade. Teach: Teach your kids stories and how to recognize God in their own stories. Play: Have fun with telling God stories. Turn your hallway into a God history museum exhibit. You've got the Holy Spirit! You can do it, mama! What exactly is contemplation and contemplative prayer? Is it new age nonsense or does it lie at the very heart of the Christian life? And if it's the latter, how exactly does the average Joe "do" it?! In this episode Brandon interviews Dr. Kyle Strobel from Biola's Talbot School of Theology. Dr. Strobel brings an amazing wealth of knowledge about the history of contemplation in the Christian tradition and especially in the protestant tradition. This is the third of a series of conversations on the topic of contemplation with experts and practitioners from across the Christian and religious spectrum. Hearing God: Developing a Conversational Relationship with God; Dallas Willard Recently God has made me listen more as a result of losing my voice after an allergic reaction to something I ate. Today we look at Chapter 1. - 1. A paradox about hearing God - Learning to hear God's voice makes us more than someone who has knowledge.17 - The ongoing conversation - He references Adam & Eve, Enoch and Moses as examples of people with an ongoing conversation with God. However, I'm not sure that is precisely true. That might be an over literal understanding of Enoch's relationship with God. In any case, we have very little detail. - The UFO syndrome - We might sound a bit wacky if we start talking about hearing God. - "Why is it", comedian Lily Tomlin asks, "that when we speak to God we are said to be praying but when God speaks to us we are said to be schizophrenic?" Is. 58:9 Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. “If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, 10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. 11 The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. - Abiding include conversing - Jesus makes his home with his followers, John 14:23 “Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” - "The Spirit who inhabits us is not mute, restricting himself to an occasional nudge, a hot flash, a brilliant image or a case of goosebumps." 22 - How can we abide unless there is communication? John 15:15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. Heb. 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Heb. 13:6 So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” Matt. 28:20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” - One-to-one with God - God cares for his sheep individually, Psalm 23 - "The biblical record always presents the relationship between God and the believer as more like a friendship or family tie than like merely one person is arranging to take care of the needs of another." 23 - The paradox - Direct communication with God is in Christian history and in Scripture. Yet it is almost a taboo topic amongst Christians. - First steps toward a solution - If we believe in personal communication we must not neglect this area - Three general problems - 1. Gods communications come to us in many forms - 2. We may have the wrong motives - 3. We misconceive the very nature of our heavenly Father and of his intent for us. God is not our buddy - "The development of character, rather than direction in this, that, and the other matter, must be the primary purpose of the father. He will guide us, but he won't override us. That fact should make us use with caution the method of sitting down with a pencil and a blank sheet of paper and write down the instructions dictated by God for the day." - A conversational relationship - We are looking for a mature relationship. - We follow because we know his voice, When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. Jn 10:4 Next week we will go on to look at chapter 2 of the book which is titled “Guidelines for hearing from God". Please add your comments on this week's topic. During one of the darkest times in Israel's history, when God's people had forgotten about the God who had rescued them over and over, He sent a “mother in Israel” to rescue them again. Not only did she rescue, she also sang a song that modeled to them then and to us now, one of the primary secrets to staying close to our God: Learning to Sing at the well.

Last week I introduced a new series on the Lord's Prayer. For several reasons, I've decided to do a rewind episode this week because it fits what we're going to be talking about in the first part of the Lord's Prayer. So what you're about to hear originally aired as Episode 28, which was part of a Freedom series I did last year, this episode titled “The Father-Heart of God.” As we address God as Father in the Lord's prayer, we're addressing him as a father. It's important that we understand what that means (and what it doesn't mean). And I think this rewind episode will set the stage for that pretty well. So join me today as we discuss: 1. The root of spiritual freedom. 2. Who Is God . . . Really? 3. What a good Father looks like. 4. How to really please God. 5. Moving From Doubt to Faith 6. The difference between living as orphans and living like sons and daughters. 7. The difference between discipline and condemnation. Each of us has a choice. You can see and determine God's character in light of and through your own experiences. OR, you can see and determine your own experiences in light of and through God's character. One choice leads to misery and bondage, the other to freedom and hope and joy and peace. Choose wisely. ____________________________ As always, we'd appreciate it if you'd tell others about the podcast. Dorina Lazo Gilmore-Young is an author and speaker who is passionate about helping people discover God's glory in unexpected places. But in the midst of the Pandemic with her family's long-awaited travel plans delayed and then cancelled, Dorina found herself struggling to see glory in the continued quarantine life. With a long winter break and nothing to look forward to, Dorina processed her disappointment with her husband Shawn and her three daughters. Shawn suggested bringing Hawaii home by having a luau and ordering in Hawaiin food and it sparked the idea of Global Glory Chasers, a cultural exploration program for families. Dorina and I talk about doing deep dives into the food and culture of international communities and how helping our kids engage with other races and nationalities gives them a global perspective on the glory of God “Learning about cultures is actually an invitation for us to learn more about God's glory and how he has made each one of us into his image bearers. We can't understand God, unless we're willing to listen to stories of people from different backgrounds. So we like to say we're breaking barriers by breaking bread at home and by eating the foods of the different cultures.” Connect with Dorina: Website: dorinagilmore.com Facebook: facebook.com/DorinaLazoGilmore Instagram: @dorinagilmore Links Mentioned: Global Glory Chasers Membership BOOK: Glory Chasers: Discovering God's Glory in Unexpected Places Ep 282 Many Hues, One Humanity :: Dr. Lucretia Berry
The big thing we have to understand about spiritual freedom is that it's rooted, not in an event or a process, but in a person — Jesus Christ. And we see this in two passages in the gospel of John (John 15:4-5, and John 8:31-36) Jesus couldn't be clearer. It's only by clinging to him — abiding in him — that we become free and remain free. And because that's so, one of the first things we've got to get settled in all this is our belief in who God is. Not our belief in God, but our belief in who he is. Because we will never abide in him — cling to him — if we don't see him as he is. Join me today as we discuss: 1. Who God says he is. 2. Wrestling with God as a Father 3. God is better than your earthly father - maybe by a lot! 4. What a good father looks like. 5. How a loving God deals with imperfect people. 6. How to really please God. 7. How the Adversary tries to get us to believe things about God that are not true. 8. How to begin moving from doubt to faith 9. Do you have the heart of an orphan or the heart of a son/daughter? And why it matters so much. 10. Three concrete ways you can begin to experience God's heart for you. ____________________________________ As always, we'd appreciate it if you'd tell others about the podcast. Kyle Strobel is the associate professor of spiritual theology at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University. Today, Kyle shares the story of how he discovered spiritual formation, feeling abandoned by God and surrendering to him, and studying the works of Jonathan Edwards. Kyle brings a unique historical perspective to the spiritual formation conversation. We also talk about his newest book, Embracing Contemplation: Reclaiming a Christian Spiritual Practice. Kyle's story reminds us that our tradition is rich if we only take the time to mine it. Listen to Kyle's story today! Stories Kyle shared: Growing up at Willow Creek Doing his PHD on Jonathan Edwards Leaving Willow with a lot of relational brokenness Going to college and having a profound realization about prayer Feeling abandoned by God and surrendering to it Learning about prayer and how Understanding spiritual practices through Jonathan Edwards and John Wesley How love works itself out in his life The conversation he hopes Embracing Contemplation starts Great quotes from Kyle: If prayer is performative then the psalter makes no sense. It took me wrestling profoundly with myself to open up others people's lives. The journey to God is a journey to love. Prayer isn't something you generate, something you start; it's something you enter. Resources we mentioned: Embracing Contemplation: Reclaiming a Christian Spiritual Practice edited by John H. We live at the mercy of our ideas. And that is never more true than when it comes to our ideas about God. If we think of him one way, it will color all of our expectations of him, and taint all of our reactions to what we perceive him to be doing — or not doing — in our world. The thing that has changed the trajectory of my life the most — moving me from trying to appease God by my efforts and by trying to have everything figured out and being “right,” to learning how I could live inside the affection the Father already has for me and to let that be enough — has been learning what it means to live loved. God loves you. It's what we believe and what we tell others. It really is the most important thing, and it's why I end every podcast with the reminder that “you are greatly loved.” Paul will say it this way: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Unfortunately, many of us have never learned to live as if he really did love us. And so we live captive to fear, and shame, and frustration, hiding from God much as Adam and Eve did in the garden. And there's a huge difference between the knowledge of God's love and actually living in that love. There is a huge difference between the intellectual acknowledgment that God loves us and the lived reality of moving through your life as if you actually believed it to be true. All that has changed for me in the last dozen years or so, and what my family and I have experienced since has been much, much closer to fulfilling every hope and desire we had for what life in Christ was meant to be and how we could live alongside others in that same joy. And no, life has not been easy since then. We've known some very dark and painful times, but we've never been alone in them. We've been able to find our way into the reality of his love and follow him — very imperfectly — through those things in a way that has transformed us in the process. It is a much, much better way to live our lives individually and together. Join me today as we talk about: How we get from here to there. What Ephesians 3:14-21 has to teach us about both God's power and his love. What difference all this makes . . . really. How to begin to view our circumstances in light of the goodness of God, as opposed to the other way around. You will never obey one whom you do not trust. And you will never trust one whom you aren't convinced loves you absolutely. And the Father loves you absolutely! Trusting God is not about outcomes, folks. This life was never meant to be one of ease and convenience. “In this life you will have trouble,” Jesus said. Rather, life is about an engaged relationship with a Father who loves you deeply, and who will walk with you, nurture you, and care for you through whatever life dishes out. The Father wants to provide for you a “peace that passes understanding” in the midst of the pain, uncertainty, and discomfort of life, because he's in it with you. THAT is the journey God has called us to be on with him. Resources for Today's Show: I've just created a Facebook group for the Jesus Society Podcast, and I'd invite you to visit us there.
