Notre Dame still lights up the #1 atop Grace Hall on campus anytime there is a team that achieves #1 status. That tradition is BLANK Mike Mickens posted on Instagram today “We'll be back” with a fist and shamrock. Scale of 1-10 how big is this for Notre Dame? Notre Dame men's basketball team lost another ACC game at home last night by 15 to Louisville. That is their 4th loss in the last five games and drops the Irish to 5-9 (13th) in the league and 11-14 overall. After the game he was asked about the last 5 games and this was his response. The NHL just had their all star break where they had a 4 nations face off. USA, Canada, Finland and Sweden. 7 total games with 6 being round robin and the top two teams playing for the title. Today we have the honor of my IRL friend, Katherine Grace Hall. She is the founder and creator of Everyday Scripture and an AMAZING Bible teacher. I literally had her come on to answer some of my personal toughest questions I have faced with the Bible. In this episode I ask some of Scripture's hardest questions: What happens when we die? Did Jesus got into hell after He was killed on the Cross? What to remember when you're offended by parts of the Bible What does it mean Jesus is “coming back?” I pray this blesses you friend!
My hour was OK this time, but unhelpfully my decks crashed! Doesn't happen often but it happened this time, so we had a little bit of awkward silence while I did a quick reboot. I could've edited it out but I decided to keep it in… it's live radio, baby - it is what it is! Once we were back in action these was time for some funk, disco and boogie, a bit of housier stuff and a lovely epic finish. For the second hour I was thrilled to hand proceedings over to Phonk D - talented producer, DJ, label head and owner of a mighty fine moustache. Dirk came to my attention about 6 years ago with his awesome First Choice edit that was being played everywhere for a while, and which I played in the first hour of this show. His mix is a wonderful meander through mellower vibes taking in the likes of Mr Scruff, cranking up the pace a little bit towards the end. A very nice mix it is too! How are you supposed to know if it's 'Best Friends FOREVER' or if it's time to close the door on a friendship? Relationships are a powerful part of all of our Brands of Beautiful which is why we felt covering them on this season of the Your Brand of Beautiful Podcast was so important. Join us this week for part two of our two-part series on relationships with Hannah Grace Hall. Today's episode is a little outside of our norm here on the Your Brand of Beautiful Podcast for a couple reasons: Instead of a typical interview-type chat, you're about to listen to a much more raw conversation that Bailie had with a friend of over 20 years, Hannah Grace Hall. This episode is part of a two-part series about relationships. Today's episode is about friendships, last week was about marriage. This week, you'll hear Bailie and Hannah Grace chat openly about friendships, including: What society's fascination is with having a friend ‘group' How Hannah Grace believes there is only one ‘wrong' way to do friendship. How to know when to fight for a friendship or allow a chapter to close. What Bailie's “fruit of the spirit” litmus test is for friendships. How to find honest friends in life. If you love this episode, please let us know, so that we can bring even more like them to your earbuds in season two of the Your Brand of Beautiful Podcast! About Hannah Grace: Hannah Grace was born in Nashville TN and raised in Texas. She graduated from high school and immediately went to beauty school in Franklin TN. She has been a hairstylist for 10 years and currently is running a single studio space called The Grace Collective. She is also exploring what God has called her to in this season of motherhood and career. During her cosmetology career she has been an employee, freelance hair & makeup artist, and owned a storefront salon in the suburbs of Nashville TN. Her salon won best in their town as well as ran huge community events impacting not just their clients but their entire town. Hannah Grace is passionate about bringing people together, loving her community well and pointing others to Jesus. Her passion for serving others and loving her community shines through her everyday life and not just in her career. She has been married for seven years and has two children whom she adores. Her favorite title she's ever had is mom. Follow Hannah Grace: https://www.instagram.com/thegracecollectiveco/
Why do people prepare for the wedding more than they do the marriage? We have to believe that's part of why nearly 50% of all marriages end in divorce. Marriage is beautiful. It's a gift from God. And, it takes work. Why aren't more people talking about that? Marriage is also a magnificent part of many listeners' Brands of Beautiful – either currently in this season, or perhaps marriage is something they hope to one day have – so let's talk about it! Today's episode is about marriage, next week will be about friendship. And while Hannah Grace would have loads of wisdom to share about being a hairstylist or a business woman, today she and Bailie are simply having girl talk about relationships: Relationships with self Relationships with God Relationships inside of a marriage Relationships between friends They're talking about the hard stuff. The messy stuff. The vulnerable stuff. We're thankful to Hannah Grace for generously sharing her story with us, knowing that testimonies breed testimonies, and that her story might help someone... inside of their own marriage, as they prepare for a marriage, as they plan for what marriage might one day be like for them. Join us today as we honor Hannah Grace's faithfulness to be truthful about hard things, in a way that paints a picture of honest hope. We hope you enjoy this very open, raw conversation about marriage. About Hannah Grace: Hannah Grace was born in Nashville TN and raised in Texas. In the sixth episode of the Nashville Scene Podcast, co-hosts Jerome Moore and D. Patrick Rodgers speak with contributor Brittney McKenna about the third and final installment in her three-part series, “The Other Nashville.” Over the past year, Brittney has checked in with members of Nashville's unhoused community — as well as outreach workers like The Beat's Darrin Bradbury — to find out what life is like for our neighbors who don't have reliable housing. Look back at the first and second parts of Brittney's series as well. Also in this episode, we talk to Scene arts editor Laura Hutson Hunter about some of Nashville's most exciting visual artists, including Grace Hall and Tara Dugger. This Sunday's sermon, "Teach Me," is part 5 in our Lent sermon series, Wandering Heart, and is based on Jesus' well-known response to how often we should forgive. As you may recall, he said, "Seventy times seven." Or, the Greek is a bit unclear in the text, he may have said, "Seventy-seven times." Either way, it is a huge number, much greater than what any of us would typically do. Jesus' point is not about math. It is about the nature of forgiveness, and the role grace plays when forgiveness is needed. And we all need forgiveness at some time in our lives. Stanley Hauerwas, a brilliant theologian who seems to irritate evangelical and progressive Christians equally (and who is also one of my all-time favorite thinkers), says, "The forgiveness that marks the church is a politics that offers an alternative to the politics based on envy, hatred, and revenge." He wrote those words back in 2006, but it feels like his idea applies to us today, doesn't it? This sermon has been a challenge to write. I've enjoyed the opportunity to wrestle with it, though, and I am hopeful it will be a good word for our day. I'm looking forward to sharing it with you on Sunday at 9 am in Grace Hall at FC North, 10 am in the sanctuary at FC South, or 11 am in the sanctuary at FC North. The music, as always, will be wonderful this weekend at all three services. Bring a friend, sit near the front, and come prepared to experience a fresh wind of the Spirit, no matter which service you attend!
This Wednesday 1.17.24 at 5:30 pm at The Gathering in Grace Hall at FC North, I will begin a series of studies titled That's Not in the Bible. Some commonly used phrases are often mistaken as biblical quotes like, "God doesn't give us more than we can handle," and "Hate the sin, love the sinner." These and others like them can be spiritually and emotionally damaging. The Gathering begins with a complimentary light supper at 5:30 pm, a brief worship service at 5:45, and adult studies and activities for children at 6. If you've never been, this is a good week to try it out!
We're 100* - today we're celebrating our 100th weekly episode and unusually we don't have a guest. Hey guys! On this episode of MC2MC we have Grace Hall! She's an artist from the Nashville scene. We talk art culture, Andy Warhol, meme culture, & more! Tune in this is a hilarious one!
Grace Hall was back on the podcast with us this week to tell us all about her second 100-mile race, the Keys 100. She has learned a lot since she told us about her first 100-mile finish back in Episode 187, and she would need all of that--plus a determined crew and a lot of chocolate almond butter sandwiches--to get her through the southern Florida heat and to the line as the fourth woman and nineteenth finisher overall.
North America has a strong tradition of hauntings The best-known stories come from several types of locations from Native American hunting grounds to colonial New England to civil war battlefields to antebellum plantations in the south. Some of these plantations have since been turned into museums or hotels. One of those plantations is in Selma, Alabama Selma captured the attention of the entire nation during the civil rights movement with the voting rights campaign in the 1960s Selma will always be best known for being the starting point of 3 marches in support of African American voting rights that were crucial in President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voters Right Act in 1965 While the civil rights movement will always be Selma's claim to fame, there is a former plantation turned hotel that has some interesting history in its own right, In this episode you will learn about Grace Hall Bed and Breakfast Inn…
This week, we debriefed our interview with Grace Hall a bit, checked in on George's Berlin Marathon training now that the Zwift Duathlon League is behind him, and described the incredible exploits of Lachlan Morton in the "Alt Tour." We also named our next Book of the Quarter! Tune in next week for our Olympic Games preview!
Last month, 17-year-old Grace Hall become one of the youngest people ever to finish a 100-mile race. As it happens, she's the daughter of podcast regular Erik, so she joined us this week to tell us about her decision to do the race, her training, her nutrition, and the race itself.
This episode has been a long time coming.... We're going to talk about the (wo)man, the myth, the legend - Margaret Thatcher. From her vendetta against Soviet communism and trade unions, to the IRA assassination attempt with the Falklands war in-between, we're going to take a whirlwind tour of her career as the longest-serving Prime Minister of the 20th century. Also discussed: - Her early beginnings in politics and first taste of media opposition (milk snatcher, of course) - How the Falklands war boosted public opinion of her and helped her to get re-elected - Trade unions, blue collar workers and the decimating of the 'working class' as we knew it - Thatcherism, privatisation and the expansion of the middle class - The role of 'the winter of discontent' in Thatcher's hardline opposition to trade unions - The inevitable end of her tenure as Prime Minister I hope this is as entertaining as it is informative, as this episode was one of the first on my mind when I started this podcast. Enjoy! Lucky you, you've landed on Just Don't Get Me Started, the podcast that is taking on society one rant at a time. Laugh at or with host, Grace Hall, as she attempts to battle through Salford's intense background noise, her own procrastination and her tendency to pick up new hobbies and drop them immediately to entertain you (a little). Just Don't Get Me Started is sometimes informed, always humorous, and is centred around bringing entertainment through topics that matter. Fair warning, this episode contains rampant, ranting stupidity - you've been warned. In this week's episode, I opt to discuss some of the things that send my head into a bit of a spin, because since being in lockdown 3.0, I've found that I can sometimes slip into ruminating over the strangest things. Such as: - Who milked a cow and decided to drink it? Exactly what was he trying to achieve? - Do caterpillars know that they're going to become butterflies? - How did Cinderella's shoe slip off if it's meant to fit only her foot, and what size shoe is she that nobody else could fit into it? - Why I've gone into a bottomless pit of stupidity because of the never-ending month of January and sudden emergence of mid-February. I hope this episode can give you a bit of a laugh, and I hope to be bringing you another 'history lesson'-type episode soon on Margaret Thatcher, so....need I say more? Lucky you, you've landed on Just Don't Get Me Started, the podcast that is taking on society one rant at a time. Whether it's Bob Ross or an Ikea advert, a lot of us have experienced ASMR without even knowing it. With close to 13 million Youtube videos with ASMR in the title, how do you even begin to describe what it is, what it involves and how you experience it? I'm going to try (and possibly fail) to softly speak whilst explaining the ins and outs of ASMR. (I say softly speak, what I mean is, I'll put you to sleep by sounding hungover...) Also discussed: - How I discovered ASMR and how different it was in 2011 - The way ASMR has become more mainstream, being seen in adverts from big brands and spoken about by celebrities, such as Cardi B - Ways in which you may have experienced ASMR without knowing (Bob Ross, I'm looking at you) - The (very early days) studies into ASMR & what they mean - How ASMR is more mainstream than ever due to apps such as TikTok also promoting ASMR content I hope that, even if this episode was boring, you could still technically benefit from the ASMR element by falling asleep because of it.... How many times do we have to say 'I'll start on Monday' before we realise that our resolutions for the New Year aren't going to stick? I've never been one to plan far ahead generally, and I know that resolutions are a waste of time for me, because unless the intention is there, it won't change anything. With that in mind, I've decided to round up 5 anti-resolutions, if you will - 5 things I'm planning on moving away from, rather than towards. 1 - I'm not about to change my entire diet - diet culture and diet companies thrive on this time of year, when people feel self-conscious about indulging themselves over the holiday period. Fuck that! Food isn't bad or good, you shouldn't 'walk off' one bloody mince pie & enjoying things in moderation should be key. (Don't let a middle-aged white man tell you that a 'summer body' is a thing, and don't believe influencers who use the word 'detox') 2 - I will not waste my time on things I don't enjoy - we've all done it at some point, whether out of guilt or obligation, but 2021 will not be the year of doing things we don't enjoy for the sake of other people! 3 - I will say 'no' more often, and apologise less - there is so much beauty in saying no and not feeling guilty for doing it, and along with that comes a requirement to apologise less to break the cycle. 4 - I am not going to feel obligated to live up to other people's expectations of what I should do - whether it's productivity shaming, or telling people that they need to do fifty things in order to 'prioritise their wellbeing', people need to stop holding others to their standards and let them move at their own pace. 5 - I am not going to begin the year by comparison - goals usually require reflection, but sometimes comparing yourself in order to reach a higher goal means diminishing your past achievements. Congratulations on reaching 2021, you don't need to write half a diss track on yourself to move forwards (you can't sell your mixtape in Manchester's Market Street right now anyway). Do you have any resolutions or anti-resolutions? I'd love to know! Lucky you, you've landed on Just Don't Get Me Started, the podcast that is taking on society one rant at a time. Brussel sprouts? Bucks Fizz? Presents before or after breakfast? Christmas traditions can vary a lot household to household, so I decided to have a poll on my Instagram account (@justdontgetmestarted) asking about certain traditions, including whether people are pro-brussel sprout or not, whether Bucks Fizz is a Christmas staple and whether Elf or Home Alone reign supreme. (I also originally asked whether people wore pyjamas on Christmas day or actual clothes, but the screenshot didn't save properly...) Also discussed: - Why people always want to open the bigger presents first - The reasoning behind a Christmas dinner before 3pm versus after (and why it'll always be breakfast, dinner and tea, end of story) - How every household tends to have one person who wakes up everyone else every single Christmas, and why it's never me (clue: it's because I hate waking up early) - Why Christmas traditions are so funny, and talking about answers I got to the question 'what are your Christmas traditions?' I hope that everyone can still have a great Christmas, and perhaps we'll all create some new Christmas traditions! The rise of Only Fans, slut-shaming, and the "I'm not like the other girls!" phenomenon.... In this week's episode (or attempt at feminist discourse) I walk through a number of topics related to misogyny, due to an increased influx in misogyny online. *Warning: contains a brief discussion around the culture surrounding sexual assault, so if this topic isn't comfortable for you, please don't listen!* Also discussed: - What internalised misogyny is, why it's so detrimental to us and why we partake in it - The "I'm not like the other girls" phenomenon and how it relates to internalised misogyny - Slut-shaming, Only Fans, and rape culture - and how it all comes back to misogynistic attitudes - How feminism has come to be viewed negatively in recent years, but how it is meant to be a movement towards equality - Why and how misogyny affects the way that we, particularly women, move throughout our lives and feel unsafe Special shoutout to @degraceomari (Instagram) for giving some special thoughts over DM when I asked people for their insights/opinions on internalised misogyny! There's a LOT to ruminate over at the minute.... (Hello darkness my old friend....) T'is the season to be anxious, fa la la la la, la la la laaaa! In this episode I walk through why we're ruminating more than ever and attempt to impart some advice. Also discussed: Why it's good to challenge yourself Using a ‘drunk girl in the toilets on a night out' approach to questioning your negative thoughts How working from home is one of the contributing factors to an increase in us ruminating Advice that I find to be useless towards my own anxiety & why There's an endless list of things to ruminate over and get anxious about, but you don't have to do it all alone (or without my monotonous voice!) I should have some more directional (aka – not aimless) episodes coming up soon, but recently I've found myself just sitting down without a major theme to get me going so....bear with me! Perhaps I really ought to get round to that ASMR episode I've been debating, since we could all use some relaxation.... This year has certainly had some memorable moments. (Memorable being a nice word for horrific.) When MPs think it's acceptable to flout covid-19 restrictions, blatantly brag about their nepotism and vote against children being given free school meals....memorable doesn't begin to cut it. In this episode, I get particularly wound up about the state of the government, the free school meals debacle and why nobody listens to politicians. Also discussed: - The sorry state of affairs when Nigel Farage can tell someone that THEY are being a dick - Why politicians have had a direct impact on peoples willingness to follow restrictions - How the places this government have put their spending and emphasis show their priorities - Why denying free school meals is indicative of how out of touch MPs are - The reason why MPs are so out of touch with reality - Seemingly, why I thought Guy Fawkes had the right idea (If I do in fact, have someone tracking my every move online....sorry.....) Lucky you, you've landed on Just Don't Get Me Started, the podcast that is taking on society one rant at a time. I don't even think Ned Stark would envy us right now... With local lockdowns changing every time Boris blinks, a new Nando's-esque 'medium' to 'very high' tier being implemented and Christmas looming - everything seems uncertain at best and catastrophic at worst. The winter months usually bring a fair amount of apprehension around money and mental health, and now, it seems even more prominent than ever. In this episode, I talk about: - The uncertainty that usually occurs in the winter months and how it might change due to the pandemic - The mental health impact of the pandemic (briefly) and how rampant feelings of anxiety currently are - Why it's a great time to be writing a manifesto and reconsidering your impact on politics - Boris Johnson's resemblance to a scarecrow & why Nigel Farage doesn't have room to speak on anything with legitimacy (much like many politicians) This was a very non-sensical one, but with everything going on....can you blame me? Lucky you, you've landed on Just Don't Get Me Started, the podcast that is taking on society one rant at a time. There's a lot of sayings and phrases we'll hear in our lifetime. A little secret? Most of them are absolute bullshit! Whether it's phrases perpetuating toxic masculinity and rape culture, or phrases that completely invalidate people needlessly. So in this episode I completely lose it and go off on one about some of the phrases that crossed my mind as being completely ridiculous (I'm sure there are many more I could bring up...) Also ranted about: - Why being 'the bigger man' is a load of bollocks designed to push the myth that forgiveness is the only route to moral superiority and closure - 'Boys will be boys' and 'boys don't cry' as contributors to a toxic culture that continues because of these narratives - 'Beauty is pain' and 'boys who pick on you like you' as ridiculous phrases that make young girls assume that pain is an inevitable part of becoming beautiful and being loved (waxing might be painful but that doesn't mean beauty is...) - Why 'I'm sorry you felt that way' is one of the biggest crocks of shit in the world of pointless apologies and lacks any accountability. If you don't like the episode, I'm sorry you FELT that way.... (I am genuinely sorry if you actually made it through this episode, though!) Lucky you, you've landed on Just Don't Get Me Started, the podcast that is taking on society one rant at a time. We've all been there. Whether you're looking down at a text, glaring at an email or standing in front of someone who's managed to get you a level of angry you didn't think was possible to reach - we've all avoided confrontation at some point. It might seem like the easier thing to do, but over time small annoyances will eventually culminate in a confrontation nobody wants. (You know, the group chat messages that get ridiculously personal, or the in-person insults that digress into the fact you were given Soap & Glory for Christmas?) Often, confrontation is the end results of boundaries being crossed, or boundaries not being enforced properly..... So, here's what I ramble about in this week's episode: - How not liking confrontation doesn't mean you can't stand up for yourself - Setting boundaries and how not to enforce them - Putting your foot down properly when it comes to boundaries - Why confrontation often doesn't serve any purpose in most cases (hence why I think it's a load of bollocks) - Why, sometimes, you just need to use the block button and tell someone to fuck off Now I'm not encouraging you all to email your boss and tell him he's always been a prick and smells of Lynx Africa, but if that's what you feel encouraged to do after this episode, that's your prerogative.... I take no responsibility. Lucky you, you've landed on Just Don't Get Me Started, the podcast that is taking on society one rant at a time. After the recent passing of phenomenal actor, Chadwick Boseman, I started to think about a topic that crosses my mind every time a public figure passes away. Why does it affect a lot of the general public so much? Though our relation to and sometimes, obsession with, those in the public eye can be described as superficial and vapid, we often see the visceral reactions to the sudden passing of celebrities. I think that people are often being too removed when they imply we can't/shouldn't feel a certain way about this when it happens, as we all have a point of relation to which we look up to certain celebrities with. Also discussed: Why the passing of celebrities hits us so hard, including having a point of relation and their contributions to social change and humanitarianism How this can also apply to negative feelings, such as with the passing of political figures The detrimental effects of celebrity culture and 24/7 news access, and why we need to sometimes step away from the gossip and mind our own business Why we should protect Ian McKellen at all costs (And a random rant about Margaret Thatcher. Having turned 22 recently, I've elected to reflect on my 22 years of being an idiot by giving my younger self some advice. Whether it's trying to please everyone or an inability to say no to friends, we've all had moments in adulthood where we wish we'd known better when we were younger. So, why not listen as I walk myself through things I wish I'd taken on board when I was younger? There are some beautiful ASMR sounds in the background such as heavy rain and, of course, due to being in Salford, sirens. Also discussed: Why viewing things as temporary can be beneficial rather than ‘morbid', particularly when it comes to friendships that can still be meaningful even when they don't last Not giving in to societal expectations and assuming because you fit certain ‘categories' you have to assimilate The power of saying NO (it's fucking fantastic!) How your mum is always correct when she tells you certain relationships in your life won't last (seriously) Why we should stop trying to please everyone else and focus on ourselves instead What advice would you give your younger self? Lucky you, you've landed on Just Don't Get Me Started, the podcast that is taking on society one rant at a time. What do you mean I can't work in my pyjamas? With more people having been working from home, there's been an all-time emphasis on just how productive we can be. Well, speaking personally, I can say it certainly comes and goes! In this rather aimless, ranty episode, I talk about how working remotely has changed a lot of our ideas around our own productivity, and how this might change even further once we're all expected to go back into offices and workspaces. Also discussed: Productivity when working remotely The role of technology in inhibiting productivity How our idea on what helps and hinders our productivity can change The major changes that have come and are about to occur due to shifting working habits Why we don't need to be so harsh about our output at a time like this Rambling aimlessly about beer gardens (Due to my own issues with technology, this episode may seem a little all over the place…but it's better than nothing!) Get summer ready with our Top 10 Bikini Body Tips!!!! Fuck off, Chelsea. Your flat tummy tea sponsorship isn't fooling anyone. Sadly, when summer rolls around, there are a lot of people eyeing up their summer clothes with disdain, anxiety and immense sadness. Whether it's struggling to fit into clothes after lockdown, or staring down at the size of your jeans and wondering why you can't fit into them – body image issues are prevalent. Summer seems to be the biggest breeding ground for these feelings, with ‘bikini body' narratives plastered everywhere, and the assumption that any skin you show has to be tanned, unblemished and toned into oblivion. Well, we're human. Some humans have stretch marks, cellulite, acne and jiggly bits. And that's fine. Also discussed in this episode: How our emotionality ties into eating behaviours and the way we should approach discussions around body image, disordered eating and health Why the ‘I'm saying it for their health' argument for speaking on other people's bodies is bullshit Body dysmorphia and how it can affect your perception of yourself and others How our childhood perception of food can later affect our relationship with eating behaviours and our body image (reward/punishment) Why you should wear whatever the fuck you want in summer I could've spent about three hours tying disordered eating, body image, body perception and societal expectations of beauty all together but…this quick stop tour will have to suffice. Have you tried exercising? Well, fuck me, Susan, I didn't realise a deadlift would cure my anxiety, clear my skin and cleanse my soul! As discussions around mental health become normalised and mainstream, the concept of wellbeing does, too. Whilst this means more people are gaining an awareness of what works for them and what doesn't, it also means that commercialised wellbeing is taking over with a ‘one size fits all' approach that people are paying good money to hear. If there's one thing nobody likes, it's unsolicited advice, which tends to come hand in hand with the concept of wellbeing strategies. In this episode, I talk about why I hate the concept of commercialised wellbeing quotas, toxic positivity and the narrative that mental health can be ‘cured'. Also discussed: Why wellbeing becoming mainstream has filled the space with commercialised bullshit How those speaking the loudest about their wellbeing and mental health are often unqualified to do so, and profiting on the concept that people can be ‘cured' How no two people's wellbeing strategies will or should be the same The changes that happen in our lives that mean wellbeing will never be a static thing Why having one cup of green tea and banging on an essential oil candle won't solve the mess that is your life (Look, I wish a good face mask and some cucumbers over my life would solve my problems, but it doesn't!) “Sorry, I forgot to respond to the email you sent me out of hours!” We all lie. Whether you're embezzling a boring story to make it funny, blatantly fabricating excuses for ignoring annoying colleagues or doing it without realising, research has shown adults lie a minimum of 2x a day. (That's not even accounting for the tiny white lies!) So, why do we lie? There's no definitive technique or technology to deduce lies, and if there was, we'd probably all be in BIG trouble. However, there are a multitude of reasons why we are so bad at detecting lies, why we lie and how lying can change even our neuropsychology. Also discussed: How lying is a fundamental part of child development Why we're so bad at detecting lies, particularly because we want and expect the truth from others The bullshit ‘cues' people cite as signs of lying and why they are flawed Our capacity for dishonesty, including the primary categories of lies and why we use them A bit of research mingled with my own moronic musings on lying, and why lying isn't necessarily always a bad thing Food for thought… If you say you're not a liar, you've even tricked yourself…. Not that empire! In a new (hopefully) series of episodes, I'm going to be taking you through a period of history, since we all know that our knowledge from high school is about as valuable as GCSE French. In today's episode, I talk about the beginnings of the British Empire, starting in 1497, where we start the old British tradition of continually fucking things up. From voyages to the Americas to England versus Spain, let me guide you horribly through a period in history that saw the beginnings of England deciding it was a good idea to impose their presence on every other piece of land they could navigate to! Also discussed: Henry VIII and his fantastic choices, including creating the Church of England and the monarch tradition of pissing off Ireland Philip 2nd of Spain, protector of Catholicism and King of several places…and his quest to truly stick it to England Elizabeth 1st and her use of Dutch Privateers, hatred of Catholicism and general dislike of Spain (and love for stealing their silver) The beginnings of Colonialism and slavery (briefly) It's a quick tour, but I'm certain it's more valuable than GCSE History…but perhaps less valuable than a Horrible History book. #GraceHallIsOverParty Seriously. How many people are going to get ‘cancelled'? Lockdown has proven that we can't go a week without someone being cancelled. Whether it's Youtube Creators, celebrities or your next door neighbour- we're all #cancelled. It's an internet phenomenon that seems to have come from nowhere, based on the assumption that if someone does wrong, we can cut them from their profit and platform permanently by airing their dirty laundry, or, in most cases, simple mistakes. (This is not in reference to those who do blackface and use racial slurs, because that will always be fucking stupid and unacceptable). Also discussed: How cancel culture arose in Youtube's beauty community (I've not got the time to do an entire timeline of events, though, so it's very brief) Accountability and how it plays into cancel culture The importance of education in avoiding future mistakes Differences between genuine issues that deserve addressing and repercussions (such as use of racial slurs and black face) and those that require education The psychology of ‘cancellation', using Lerner's ‘Just World Hypothesis' A quick link to update you on the ‘beauty community' drama, and cancellation in general: https://www.insider.com/why-some-celebrities-seem-bulletproof-to-being-canceled-2020-7 Lucky you, you've landed on Just Don't Get Me Started, the podcast that is taking on society one rant at a time. The year is ____. Artificial intelligence looks no different to humans, and travelling to space is easy. One thing that hasn't changed? Misogyny. *Trigger warning, this episode discusses media portrayal of violence against women, including sexual violence and assault* Whether you're looking at sci-fi books or their TV/film counterparts, the violence against women runs rampant. From the prevailing theme of women being primarily sex workers, or sexual assault being so ingrained into the narrative- it's impossible to escape. Those who oppose this concept claim that it's simply a ‘realistic portrayal', even though cars are flying and people can switch bodies at will. The portrayals of violence against women are not only excessive and gratuitous, but usually presented as erotic. I elected to invite my sister, Bethany, onto the podcast, as a long-time sci-fi fan. Unlike me, Bethany actually knows her shit when it comes to the book versions of some of the TV shows mentioned. Be patient with us as we dissect just how deep the misogyny runs in the genre. Also discussed: Misogyny in films such as Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049 and Star Wars The book/tv differences in Altered Carbon How Battlestar Galactica is a prime example of the ‘it's not violence against women if they aren't real women' argument The 100 as an example of a TV show that is primarily matriarchal Why The Expanse is the best sci-fi show out there Please don't judge us too harshly for not going into Star Trek, as we're not actually in a reality where we have eternal life, which is the only way we'd have time to dissect all versions of Star Trek. Is that Chaka Khan playing in the background? Pride month this year has been markedly different from other years, with good reason. The BLM protests and movement continues to shine a light on the oppression dealt upon entire communities, including the black LGBT community. However, today I'm talking about what ‘pride' means to me, namely, why ‘straight pride' conversations enrage me, why pride is necessary and how pride events have adapted with time. Also ranted about: My position on the topic as a bisexual, cisgender woman How different cities either celebrate or commemorate pride, and why it can be important to emphasise commemoration Why pride is necessary, including a brief discussion of the legislative and societal issues that still plague the LGBT community How everyone will experience and view pride differently due to their own acceptance and experience of their sexuality Why those advocating for a ‘straight pride' lack any fucking common sense Great resources: Stonewall UK's Resources page: https://www.stonewall.org.uk/best-practice-toolkits-and-resources-0 Akt, an organisation helping LGBTQ+ people between 16-25 who are currently in hostile living environments or experiencing homelessness: https://www.akt.org.uk/ Rainbow Mind (Salford) for mental health assistance: https://www.mindinsalford.org.uk/rainbow-mind-lgbtqi-project/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzfLWxaea6gIVGIGyCh3uhgwrEAAYAiAAEgIRHfD_BwE Lucky you, you've landed on Just Don't Get Me Started, the podcast that is taking on society one rant at a time. As announcements around the easing of lockdown become imminent, the dread around returning to ‘normalcy' does as well. Post-lockdown anxiety has become a reality for a lot of people, with nightmares about stepping foot on public transport in the near future becoming rampant and hazmat suits looking more desirable by the second. Whether you're concerned about returning to an office, or worried about stepping foot inside a shop or restaurant, you're not alone in feeling anxiety around lockdown restrictions being lifted. Also discussed in this episode: The trials and tribulations of ever stepping foot on public transport again How office spaces are hardly going to be viewed confidently considering the usual state of shared work-spaces Taking small steps to decrease your anxiety around lockdown being lifted How the government's insistence for several years that we all take public transport is now biting them in the ass Sharing your concerns with others Lucky you, you've landed on Just Don't Get Me Started, the podcast that is taking on society one rant at a time. The media is fraught with discussions around racism, and within that discussion there is a topic a large part of the population seek to deny… White Privilege. In this episode, I talk about what white privilege is and why in the UK we struggle to accept and acknowledge it, whilst battling at least ten interruptions during recording. Also discussed in-between sips of a Starbucks iced coffee: How trying to counteract white privilege by talking about our hardships doesn't suddenly wipe white privilege from existence The things we take for granted due to privilege The language used in media regarding BLM protests versus ‘far-right' protesters Understanding our privilege in order to use it for good (When I mentioned my neighbour ‘blowing up' their hot tub, I'd like to clarify that I do not in fact mean, explosives, but instead air). Ah, lockdown… The UK has been in lockdown since Tuesday 23rd of March, starting off with people picking shelves clean of pasta and toilet paper and Facebook Karen's thinking that tanks were roaming around London to enforce lockdown on citizens. It's been quite the ride! For my first official episode, I've kept it short and sweet and mainly anecdotal. Perfect to listen to ten seconds of on your lunch break before clicking off never to return! Whilst lockdown restrictions are easing, a large majority of people across the UK remain at home, and in this episode, I discuss the trials and tribulations of lockdown for myself and others. Also included in this rant: Every video call you're on being interrupted Getting to know (hate) your neighbours ‘Bang a pan' Thursday, a.k.a – ‘Clap for carers/the NHS' Daily briefings becoming the new Love Island A marketing idea for Specsavers Lucky you, you've landed on Just Don't Get Me Started, the podcast that is taking on society one rant at a time. I suppose you've stumbled across this clicking on a link I've plastered across some form of social media. Lucky you! In this episode, I introduce Just Don't Get Me Started, namely, how it came about and what it's going to involve moving forwards. As an anxious 21 year old who rants a lot and researches a little, my vision for Just Don't Get Me Started is one of combining humour with societal issues, with some research and ridiculous anecdotes in between. If you want to stay on for what promises to be a very interesting journey as I travel through a variety of topics, from Reality TV to what exactly a ‘Karen' is, then I'd like to say thank you in advance. I also discuss, briefly, a bit about myself and why I became interested in the idea of starting my own podcast. This episode also includes: How Just Don't Get Me Started came about Me doing a random Boris Johnson impression Disclaimers about what you can expect in future episodes Why ranting is so important for us Lucky you, you've landed on Just Don't Get Me Started, the podcast that is taking on society one rant at a time. A look back on 2019 with host of the Dark Coffee Podcast, Alice Lyons, and collaborator Grace Hall both reflecting on what the year has brought in terms of wellbeing, mental health and overall lessons. Between the laughter, odd references and multiple directions of this episode, there is a focus on the value of reflection, the importance of self-awareness and how being in recovery isn't a negative thing. The first part of this podcast episode focuses on these questions, which are a great way to reflect on your year as we go into 2020: (4:40) What word would you use to summarise 2019? (8:50) If 2019 were a cocktail, what cocktail would it be (and why)? (15:10) If 2019 were a person, how would you describe them? (22:05) How was your mental health throughout 2019? How did you manage it? (45:59) What is the best thing you’ve done for your mental health and/or wellbeing this year? Fantasy football sucks the life out of me. It really does. This is Short Time Shots for Sunday, November 19, 2017 and let’s just say, I’m having more success starting guys like Case Keenum than I am “fantasy studs.” I’m also recording these in one take. If I flub, I flub. Who am I? Hall of Fame announcer Jason Bryant, that’s who! Very limited schedule across the country on this, the Sunday before Thanksgiving here in the United States, but the five Division I duals we saw all involved ranked teams. The question is, where do we start? We had two top 10 duals … ah, let’s start with the upset. And by upset, we mean No. 10 Lehigh pasting No. 4 Michigan at Grace Hall in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania 27-8. On paper, people believed this Michigan team could make a run at the NCAA title. I even mentioned to Richard Immel on Bonus Points on Friday that Michigan could take some dual losses and still come out as a threat. On Sunday, Lehigh wasn’t impressed by the credentials, the hype or the ranking as Pat Santoro’s 10th-ranked Mountain Hawks scored sizable wins from Ian Brown at 157, Jordan Kutler at 174 and Ryan “The Preisch is Right” at 184. At this rate, it’s doubtful anyone’s going to drop a weight, especially Preisch, who topped Domenic Abounader 3-1 at 184 and Kutler, who topped All-American Alec Pantaleo at 157. Scotty Parker using that RP Norley Pennridge strength registered another fall, although it was over Michigan backup Michael Volyanyuk. In Stillwater, we were expecting a tight dual with third-ranked Oklahoma State and sixth-ranked Minnesota. A bunch of matches were tight, but the dual score wasn’t. The Cowboys gave coach John Smith his 400th career dual victory with a 30-3 beatdown of the Golden Gophers. The Cowboys won five matches decided by two points or less. Minnesota’s lone bright spot came at 125 where returning NCAA finalist Ethan Lizak rallied to beat Nick Piccininni 10-9. Piccininni built an 8-1 lead at the end of the first period before Lizak chose top and scored six nearfall points in two different sequences. In the third, Piccininni chose neutral and gave up the go-ahead takedown. A riding time point would be the final difference maker. The rest of the dual -- uffda. Kaid Brock scored four takedowns to beat Mitch McKee 9-7 in a bout that wasn’t as close as the score indicated. Dean Heil needed a third-period takedown to do Dean Heil types of things and beat Tommy Thorn 3-1. No. 9 Virginia Tech looked strong to quite strong in a maroon battle against Central Michigan. The Hokies won eight out of 10 and too both head-to-head ranked matchups to earn the win in Cassell Coliseum. At 149, Solomon Chishko topped Justin Oliver 3-1 in a matchup of past All-Americans while Zack Zavatsky topped Jordan Ellingwood 7-4 at 184. For the second straight time, B.C. “The Headache Powder” LaPrade makes the show. He upset Collin Heffernan 3-1 in sudden victory. Being a Poquoson grad, I can’t give the New Kent guy TOO much pub. Arizona State took center stage, LITERALLY, as the Sun Devils hosted a theater-style dual against No. 25 Pittsburgh. The end result was more tragedy for the Panthers than it was comedy as the Sun Devils won eight of 10 bouts to cruise to a 32-6 win. Coach Zeke “My real name is Larry” Jones saw his team win both of the notable matches as Josh Shields beat Taleb Rahmani at 157 and Tanner Hall beat Ryan Solomon in one of those thrilling escape-riding time 2-0 wins. No. 13 Northern Iowa rebounded from Friday’s loss to win its first Big 12 dual with a 21-19 win over North Dakota State in Cedar Falls. At 141, Josh Alber scored the match-winning individual victory with a technical fall in the final match of the dual. Penn State crowned seven champs at the Keystone Classic at The Palestra hosted by Penn (singular). Zain Retherford won his 100th career bout during the course of the event, while Jason Nolf pinned his way through at 157 pounds. Bo Nickal scored three falls and a tech en route to the title at 184. Other Penn State champs were Jered Cortez at 141, Anthony Cassar at 197, Nick Nevills at heavyweight and Mark Hall at 174, who went fall, fall, tech tech, fall. Kinda like that whole duck-duck-grey duck thing they do out here. I still think it’s duck-duck-goose. Cornell won the New York State Intercollegiate championships, there wasn’t a whole lot of comp to challenge the Big Red this year. Lock Haven won four titles at the Black Knight Invitational at Army West Point -- yes, you kind of have to say the whole “Army West Point” thing now. Something about branding. The Bald Eagles got golds form Kyle Shoop-Shoop-ay-Doop, Chance Marsteller and a pair of Solanco Mules -- Ronnie Perry and Thomas Haines. Lancaster-Lebanon League representing the 717 there. NC State won five titles at the Wolfpack open. Yup. They hosted. Wisconsin won five titles out west at the Roadrunner Open hosted by CSU Bakersfield. Top win there was probably Ricky Robertson’s 3-1 overtime win over Emery Parker of Illinois. In Division III, John Carroll swept the John Carroll duals, earning wins over Case Western Reserve, Penn State Behrend, Lycoming, Alfred State and Lourdes. Gettysburg won three matches at the Green Terror Duals in Westminster, Maryland. Yes, the Green Terror is the nickname of McDaniel College, formerly known as Western Maryland. Coach Andy Vogel’s Bullets topped Division II Alderson-Broaddus 30-14, Penn State-Mont Alto 57-0 and Scranton 27-15. Gettysburg 133-pounder Louie Carusillo picked up the Dundie Award for fastest fall in the dual against Scranton. The only one I stuck with was the Berlin Walleye. I’m actually losing to a bunch of other podcast nerds in one league. I’m like 0-10. But I’m in the running in my league with a bunch of former colleagues from the paper, some of whom are NFL beatwriters. Podcasters know more about fantasy football than sportswriters. That’s today’s lesson. The Short Time Time Wrestling Podcast is proudly supported by Compound Clothing. And if you haven't already, leave a rating and a review on iTunes. Episode 357 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast visits with Lehigh alum and wrestling media member Denny Diehl as he shares his memories and stories about the late John Harmon. John J. Harmon, the EIWA's Sports Information Director Emeritus, passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2017. A 1959 graduate of Lehigh University John earned a B.A. in mathematics, is survived by his wife Elaine Oberkotter Harmon and his daughters Debbie and Wendy and their families. John was a computer programmer/systems analyst by profession. Many knew him as the publisher for twenty-four years of the EIWA Newsletter, the clearinghouse of all information regarding the teams of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association, the nation's oldest wrestling conference. He was the EIWA Sports Information Director for more than two decades. John worked with Greg Strobel, the EIWA's Executive Director, to create the conference's first website which incorporates many of the features of the EIWA Newsletter, which ceased publication in 2014. John co-authored the first and second editions of The History of the EIWA and from 1983-90 was editor of National Mat News. In 2012 he received the Dellinger Award as the nation's top wrestling journalist. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, OK, its NJ Wrestling Hall of Fame chapter and served a decade on the EIWA Hall of Fame Committee. The generosity of John and Elaine to Lehigh was boundless. They were the lead donors for the renovations of Grace Hall that became Leeman-Turner Arena. Typical of the man, he insisted that the arena be named, not after himself, but after Hall of Fame coaches Gerry Leeman and Thad Turner. The Harmons also supported the building of Goodman Stadium, the head wrestling coach and assistant coaches’ endowments, the Michael Caruso Wrestling Complex, and the John J. Harmon '59 Wrestling Scholarship. Elaine assembled thousands of care packages for service members who were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. His community activities included the Lawrence Township Board of Education, the Mercer County Human Services Advisory Council, the Lawrence Rotary Club, and several New Jersey statewide committees dealing with education. A lifelong railroad enthusiast and investor, Harmon was a member of the National Railroad Historical Society. Was great to welcome on the LTB gyms newest coach, Grace Hall, to the podcast. We asked Grace to come on as she’s come from being a member of the gym to now being a coach and we wanted to find out more about what that transition has been like, but it was also cool to hear about her previous careers and how these have helped her integrate into the world of coaching. We go pretty deep into the reasons Grace joined the LTB gym, why she’s stuck around, what it’s been like moving from member to coach, what she is finding hardest since starting as a coach and what’s helping her progress.
