Post 1956, several battles are fought between North and South Vietnam. The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution of 1964 gives US President LBJ authority to increase US involvement in the Vietnam War. This is followed by targeted bombings under Operation Rolling Thunder by the US and counter offensives by the Viet Cong like the Tet Offensive. Agent Orange and Napalm droppings lead to a massive ecocide with severe after effects on the human population. Paris Accords of 1973 call for a ceasefire and North Vietnam triggers one last offensive towards reunification.
Today is the 60th anniversary of the Gulf of Tonkin incident, which led to the United States' entry into the Vietnam War. In recognition of this event, we are bringing you a special episode of CNA Talks, featuring a group of historians with uniquely valuable perspectives on the incident. This discussion was originally held on August 5, 2023.
In August of 1964, an event occurred off the waters of North Vietnam that would have repercussions that would echo in US foreign policy for decades. Two alleged confrontations between US Navy vessels and North Vietnamese ships set off a chain of events that resulted in a dramatic escalation in the United States' involvement in Vietnam and a subsequent backlash that would change military policy to the present day. When historians began dissecting the intelligence that spurred U.S. destroyers to retaliate in the Gulf of Tonkin, they came up short. In fact, there seemed to be first hand accounts that proved the opposite: there weren't any enemy ships that night. So why did the Navy ever believe there were? Even though we were already involved, this was the event that really started us down the long road to a full scale land war in Asia. Strangely, to this day no one knows exactly for sure what happened in the middle of the night on the other side of the world. Most likely, nothing. But the supposed attack on the U.S.S. Maddox and U. S. S. C. Turner Joy led to a retaliatory strike against North Vietnam and then the Johnson Administration seeking a resolution from Congress that would unshackle it and allow it to wage war in Vietnam. Not only are the events that happened in the night shrouded in mystery so are the events that led to Lyndon Johnson's announcements and his decision to retaliate. The entire thing begged a question that was raised against the next President in another situation more famously, but it still applies to the Gulf of Tonkin and Lyndon Johnson too. What did the President know and when did he know it? Did Lyndon Johnson's Defense Secretary, a holdover from the Kennedy Administration, ever tell him that there was evidence that the two ships may actually have never been fired upon at all and the entire thing could have been the results of " an over eager sonar man and freak weather effects" Here listen to accounts from the military men who were actually there that night as they retold it to the The Learning Channel in its documentary "The Johnson Tapes" and then listen to the actual phone calls to and from Lyndon Johnson and his Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, and then listen as Johnson's aids describe a man who torturously analyzed the situation trying to figure out any way he could avoid escalating involvement in Vietnam into a full scale Land War in Asia.
On the night of August 4th, 1964, the crews of two American destroyers reported a gunfight at sea off the coast of North Vietnam. The report, two days after an initial exchange of fire between an American ship and North Vietnamese patrol boats, set the United States on a tragic course from which it could not divert: a commitment to a conventional war in Vietnam. The Gulf of Tonkin incident is among the most consequential events in post-World War II American history. However, it remains mired in controversy, hung up in confusing sonar hits and blurred memories. On Episode 49 of the 18th Airborne Corps podcast, host Joe Buccino tells the full, final story of the Gulf of Tonkin, of what really happened that night. He also describes how the events of August 4th, 1964 led so quickly to a war resolution. We spent 19 months researching this podcast; it is the final word on the Gulf of Tonkin incident. This episode features three of the Nation's top historians: Erik Villard, Edwin Moise, and John Prados, as well as Chad James, a US Navy Radarman 3rd Class at sea that night. Dr. Erik Villard is the Digital Military Historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History in Fort McNair, DC. He's also an Army historian of the Vietnam War and one of the world's leading experts on the 1968 Tet Offensive. Dr. Edwin E. Moise is a professor of history at Clemson University. Like Dr. Villard, he specializes in the Vietnam War. He is the author of the definitive account of the Tonkin Gulf Crisis: “Tonkin Gulf and the Escalation of the Vietnam War,” originally published in 1996, with a revised edition in 2019. Dr. John Prados heads the National Archive's Intelligence Documentation Project and its Vietnam Project. He is among our Nation's highest profile historians of the Vietnam War and American intelligence. Dr. Prados has authored many books on the CIA, national security, and the Vietnam War, most notably “Vietnam: The History of an Unwinnable War,” published in 2009. At an hour and a half, this is a longer episode, but it's worth the time. It's a fascinating story, one that is critical to our understanding of the Vietnam War. But this is not simply an effort in uncovering history: the Gulf of Tonkin has so much wisdom to offer us today. We reveal that wisdom in the final section in which we describe the lessons from August 1964 and how they apply to the current national security structure. This is a story of strategic miscalculation, of political pressure leading to catastrophic military decisions, of misunderstood intentions. It's also, at heart, the story of the fog of war and its cost. We timed this release for the 57th anniversary of the Gulf of Tonkin incident. It's never been more relevant. The 18th Airborne Corps podcast is the official podcast of the US Army's XVIII Airborne Corps. Recorded on Fort Bragg, North Carolina with a new episode released every Tuesday, the podcast tells one complete story about an important national security subject every week.

On November 18, 1965, U.S. Navy pilot Willie Sharp ejected from his F-8 fighter after being hit while positioned over a target in North Vietnam. With a cloud layer beneath him, he did not know if he was over land-where he would most certainly be captured or killed by the North Vietnamese or over the Gulf of Tonkin. As he ejected, both navy and air force aircraft were already heading toward him to help. Thanks to Dennis DeFreitas and his Youtube video of Willie's shootdown available here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Md9oNlLYEr8Co-host James Chilcott speaks with former military flight test engineer Eileen A. Bjorkman, who has written “Unforgotten in the Gulf of Tonkin A Story of the U.S. Military's Commitment to Leave No One Behind” The book includes nail-biting descriptions of air combat, flight, and rescue as Bjorkman places Willie Sharp's story in the larger context of the U.S. military's bedrock credo-No Man Left Behind-and calls attention to the more than eighty thousand Americans still missing from conflicts since World War I. She also explores the devastating aftershocks of the Vietnam War as Willie Sharp struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder.Buy the book and support the Podcast UK listeners buy the book here https://amzn.to/3rtpJDeUS Listeners buy the book here https://amzn.to/3zwLVPAIf you have listened this far, I know you are enjoying the podcasts so I'm asking for donations to support my work and enable me to continue producing the podcast. https://youtu.be/tJZZ7U4BebQ Revisionism is an historical discipline made necessary by the fact that all States are governed by a ruling class that is a minority of the population, and which subsists as a parasitic and exploitative burden upon the rest of society. Since its rule is exploitative and parasitic, the State must purchase the alliance of a group of “Court Intellectuals,” whose task is to bamboozle the public into accepting and celebrating the rule of its particular State. The Court Intellectuals have their work cut out for them. In exchange for their continuing work of apologetics and bamboozlement, the Court Intellectuals win their place as junior partners in the power, prestige, and loot extracted by the State apparatus from the deluded public. The noble task of Revisionism is to de-bamboozle: to penetrate the fog of lies and deception of the State and its Court Intellectuals, and to present to the public the true history of the motivation, the nature, and the consequences of State activity. By working past the fog of State deception to penetrate to the truth, to the reality behind the false appearances, the Revisionist works to delegitimate, to desanctify, the State in the eyes of the previously deceived public. By doing so, the Revisionist, even if he is not a libertarian personally, performs a vitally important libertarian service. Hence, the Revisionist historian performs crucial libertarian tasks regardless of his own personal ideology. Since the State cannot function, cannot command majority support vital to its existence without imposing a network of deception. Revisionist history becomes a crucial part of the tasks of the libertarian movement. Crucial especially because Revisionism goes beyond pure theory to expose and reveal the specific lies and crimes of the State as it exists in concrete reality. ... Since war and foreign policy provide the State with its easiest means of delusion and deception. Revisionist exposure on the foreign affairs front is the most important avenue of desanctification and delegitimation of the State apparatus and of State aggression. Murray N. The Gulf of Tonkin incident , also known as the USS Maddox incident, was a disputed international confrontation that led to the United States engaging more directly in the Vietnam War. It involved both a real confrontation and a fabricated confrontation between ships of North Vietnam and the United States in the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. The original American report blamed North Vietnam for both incidents, but the Pentagon Papers, the memoirs of Robert McNamara, and NSA publications from 2005, proved that the US government lied to justify a war against Vietnam. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/art-mcdermott/support

Gareth Porter joins Scott once again to discuss what he calls Mike Pompeo’s “Gulf of Tonkin incident.” In the real Gulf of Tonkin incident, McNamara intentionally misled President Johnson in order to incite war between the U.S. and North Vietnam. Porter says that Pompeo pulled a similar maneuver in deceiving President Trump about the extent to which Soleimani and the Iranians were behind the recent embassy attacks in Iraq in order to persuade him to carry out Soleimani’s assassination. For the time being, at least, it appears that Trump is satisfied to let the Iranians save face with their missile strike and is not interested in further escalation. Discussed on the show: The CIA Insider’s Guide to the Iran Crisis: From CIA Coup to the Brink of War “Pompeo’s Gulf Of Tonkin Incident” (The American Conservative) Gulf of Tonkin Resolution Secrets: A Memoir of Vietnam and the Pentagon Papers Gareth Porter is an investigative historian and journalist on the national security state, and author of Manufactured Crisis: The Untold Story of the Iran Nuclear Scare. As the U.S. accuses Iran of attacking civilian ships while offering scant evidence, grave historical parallels are emerging with the Gulf of Tonkin incidents in 1964 that were manipulated to justify Lyndon Johnson’s dramatic escalation of the war in Vietnam. California Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna is preparing legislation aimed at stopping an attack on Iran and he says he would not put it past National Security Adviser John Bolton to manipulate evidence. Journalist Negar Mortazavi of The Independent analyzes what war with Iran would look like and exposes the State Department’s funding of propaganda operations against Iran. Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman talks about the parallels with the build up to the Iraq invasion of 2003 and shares stories from her early life as a journalist.

On the 2nd of August 1964 the USS Maddox was on an electronic reconnaissance patrol in the Gulf Of Tonkin off the coast of North Vietnam. The vessel was approached and attacked by 3 North Vietnamese Navy Torpedo boats and a battle ensued. Two days later the Maddox was attacked again. The aggressive posture displayed by the North Vietnamese lead to all out combat costing millions of lives. Immediately after the ambush, people casted doubts over what had really happened to the Maddox, was it really attacked ? A true false flag event. The Mind Renewed : Thinking Christianly in a New World Order
On the thirteenth anniversary of 9/11, we welcome (back) to the programme teacher, blogger and free thinker Antony Rotunno, who joins us for an informal, unstructured and fairly wide-ranging conversation on the subject of "Changing the Discourse". What is the so-called Truth Movement about? Is it mainly about practising and encouraging others to exercise "critical thinking"? Or is it essentially about removing psychological barriers to thought in certain areas? Is it about changing the way we and others see the world? If so... from what, to what? Many speak of wanting people to "wake up". But is "sleep" really the best metaphor to describe the problem? And is it helpful to speak of "a" Truth Movement anyway? These, and many more issues find their way into the conversation, as I misuse the word "anthropology" and win my very first bet on a podcast. (For show notes please visit http://themindrenewed.com)

We keep with strange stuff in the music scene for Volume 43, as US author and researcher Dave McGowan guests. Dave was behind the recent series of web articles shining the spotlight on the Laurel Canyon neighbourhood of Los Angeles, which has now become his new book, Weird Scenes Inside The Canyon. We ask the question why, of all places, did LC became the birthplace of the counter-culture/ hippie movement of the mid-1960s, rather than San Francisco as is often assumed, and why did a staggering number of the most prominent musicians from that era just happen to congregate in this community? The waters get muddied when it turns out that LC was home to a covert military intelligence base, and some delving into the backgrounds of the artists reveals that, almost without exception, they came from families connected with arms of the government. The most striking example is the father of The Doors' Jim Morrison, who just happened to be US naval commander at the site of the Gulf Of Tonkin false flag incidents that catapulted America into the Vietnam War.This raises the alarming question of whether the hippie movement was as organic and grass-roots as has always been believed, or whether it could have all been a cynically manipulated exercise in mass social engineering and mind control.

Skeptoid listeners are always asking for conspiracy theories that turned out to be true. Here are the best I found.
The Mind Renewed : Thinking Christianly in a New World Order
For the short Easter break, we again take the opportunity to share a Guest Episode - this time, an audio essay by a listener to The Mind Renewed, Antony Rotunno. In "Conspiracy Theory - A Powerful Phrase!" Antony Rotunno - a UK English teacher now living in Madrid - discusses the development, power and scope of the term "conspiracy theory" (in its pejorative sense). Maintaining that its weaponised function as a thought-stopper in the general population is regularly exploited by those in authority in order to discourage investigation of government wrongdoing, Antony Rotunno argues that the only way forward for us is to "change the discourse"; to think outside the Matrix, and work towards bringing others into the conversation, so that the structures that inhibit critical thinking might be laid bare.
