Former President Donald Trump's statement that the attack on Israel by Iran “would not have happened if we were in office,” has drawn derision, including from his former National Security Adviser John Bolton. Bolton called the remark “delusional,” saying that Trump “has no idea what to do in the Middle East in this situation.” If Trump is delusional, Bolton has amnesia regarding what happened on his watch and after. Former U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton discusses the reported leak of classified Pentagon papers and the need to reaffirm our support for Taiwan. Bolton comments that after the week of China carrying out military excersies around the Taiwan Strait, that the U.S., “in the short term, there's simply no question, we've got to put more weapons systems in that [Taiwan] needs, we need to do more training of their troops. I think putting Americans on the ground would make sense and other allies Japan, Australia, I think we've got to consider home-porting some American naval vessels there. We also need to think long term to embed Taiwan and collective self defense organizations with Japan, South Korea, Australia and others. And I must say, we've got to do a better job of keeping the European allies. French president Macron, just returning from China essentially threw Taiwan under the bus saying, ‘well, we don't want Europe to be led around and get involved in the American problem.'” Bolton comments that he believes this is “the kind of behavior that really causes so much harm to our effort to deter China, it's really an incalculable and just completely unacceptable statement by one of our NATO allies.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

But will Europe have access to Russian gas during the winter season? Alarmingly, there is no plan B in the event Russia cuts off access via its pipelines. Germany's government is already requesting citizens reduce their energy consumption by 15%. Stuttaford hypothesizes that many of the policymakers and activists pushing for “decarbonization” are also, less-vocally, advocating for slowed economic growth. The Justice Department has charged Shahram Poursafi—a member of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard—for his alleged involvement in a plot to assassinate former National Security Adviser John Bolton. The assassination plot was believed to have been in response to the Trump Administration's approved military drone strike on Qasem Soleimani in 2020. While on CNN, Bolton joked that he was “embarrassed” by the low-price Iran was offering for his assassination. The Biden Administration is pushing a misleading talking point—that the economy experienced “zero inflation” in the month of July. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the consumer price index (CPI) did not rise in July—but inflation has risen 8.5% in July on an annual basis. Specifically, food prices are up 1.1% (10.9% annually) and energy is up 0.3% (5.9% annually).

She also talks about symbolic acts versus concrete programs and how well Mayor Muriel Bowser is succeeding at the latter. Eugene Puryear, journalist with BreakThrough News, discusses the firing of US Attorney for the Southern District of New York Geoffrey Berman, the strange wave of fireworks in cities around the US, how serious a threat the Boogaloo bois actually are, NASCAR's struggle to fight racism in its ranks, and how on earth sports are going to go on as this pandemic shows no sign of slowing. The hosts also broke down President Donald Trump's Tulsa rally, former National Security Adviser John Bolton's latest moment of network glory, the bizarre news that the pandemic has actually reduced poverty in the US, and Black and Hispanic prison guards being kept away from detained Officer Derek Chauvin. They also, of course, took a few swings at the toothless Sunday news shows.

Joining Tom for the hour today is the senior Democratic senator from Maryland, Ben Cardin. First elected to the Senate in 2006, he is currently the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. He also serves on the Senate Finance Committee and the Foreign Relations Committee. Some of the topics Tom questions Sen. Cardin about: President Trump held a rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Saturday. The arena wasn't as full as his campaign predicted it would be, but Mr. Trump did attract more than 6,000 people, despite numerous warnings from health officials that the rally posed a major health risk. A federal judge denied the Trump Administration's request that Simon and Schuster be blocked from releasing former National Security Adviser John Bolton’s tell-all memoir, citing the fact that so many copies of the book were already circulating. Bolton is making the rounds of national news shows, verifying previous reports in numerous other books that Mr. Trump is not fit to serve in the highest office in the land.... The Supreme Court handed the Trump Administration two legal losses last week, blocking its order to end DACA protections for so-called Dreamers, and disallowing workplace discrimination against LGBTQ employees. And as more businesses open in Maryland, the metrics around the COVID-19 pandemic in our state continue to improve. Our positivity rate is now within the guidelines set by the World Health Organization for easing restrictions. Other states, like Arizona and Florida, are seeing a spike in cases and an uptick in positivity rates. Sen. Cardin joins us on the line from his home in Pikesville. We take your calls for the senator a little later in the program.

It's January 31, 2020. It's the 10th day of the impeachment trial of President Donald J. Trump. I'm Margaret Taylor, Senior Editor at Lawfare. Today, Senators listened to the arguments of the parties, and then voted 49-51 not to call new witnesses or subpoena new documents. Republican Senators Susan Collins and Mitt Romney voted with Democrats, but the vote was nonetheless unsuccessful. Senate leadership then offered a new procedural resolution to govern how the trial would conclude over the coming days. Closing statements from the parties will occur at 11am on Monday, and a final vote on the articles of impeachment will occur at 4pm on Wednesday. Democrats offered 4 amendments to the resolution. The first was an amendment to subpoena acting white house chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, former National Security Adviser John Bolton, Michael Duffey, and David Blair, as well as documents from the White House, the Office of Management and Budget, the Department of Defense, and the Department of State. The second was to subpoena just John Bolton. The third was to subpoena Bolton and allow for one day for a deposition and one day for live testimony. The fourth and final amendment was to require the Chief Justice to rule on motions to subpoena witnesses and documents, and to rule on any assertions of privilege. On all four amendments, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell moved to table--or defeat--them, and all were defeated. Thereater, the resolution setting out the path for resolution of the trial passed on a 53-47 party line vote.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell then asked for unanimous consent to include statements of Senators explaining their votes in the Congressional record next week, along with a full record of the Senate's proceedings and handling of the impeachment proceedings. The Senate then agreed, by unanimous consent, to allow Senators to speak for up to 10 minutes each on Monday. This is The Impeachment, Episode 10. The Senate votes not to subpoena witnesses or documents, and charts a path forward to end the impeachment trial. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. In other news, the impeachment trial continues, and we turn to our very own pollster Steve Koczela to break down what voters think about whether Senators should call former National Security Adviser John Bolton to testify during the trial. This comes after revelations that a book manuscript written by Bolton contains evidence that would incriminate the President. Stephanie Murray has just returned from New Hampshire, where she covered an Elizabeth Warren canvassing event and met campaign surrogates who connected with Warren after being victimized by the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. They shared their story with Stephanie. Finally, we turn to the most vocal advocate for an east-west rail link, State Senator Eric Lesser, whose high hopes for the potential project include improving the congestion crisis in Eastern Massachusetts and stimulating the economy in Western Massachusetts.

LRC Presents: All the President's Lawyers

The president’s legal defense team made their opening statements and now we’re in the phase where senators can submit questions to the House impeachment managers and the lawyers. But the biggest developments in the trial have arguably occurred outside the Senate chamber. The New York Times reported on the contents of former National Security Adviser John Bolton’s forthcoming book. Among other claims, the book says President Trump told Bolton he wanted military aid to Ukraine withheld until Ukraine probed Joe and Hunter Biden — in other words, the quid pro quo. There will be a vote soon about witnesses in the Senate trial. Is this trial incomplete without John Bolton’s testimony? Also: why doesn’t John Bolton just...talk? Do Republicans really believe that the president should only be accountable to the voting public and the only way to remove a president is to vote them out of office? That seems to be what they are arguing. Alan Dershowitz has made some broad statements about presidential power this week, namely, that if the president believes his re-election is in the public interest, a quid pro quo done to win re-election isn’t impeachable. Wow. Also, is Rudy Giuliani a good podcast host?

When it comes to North Korea, the old adage of “Trust, but verify” isn’t nearly enough. We should—absolutely—be skeptical of the rogue regime’s claims. And we should, of course, hold them accountable for whatever promises they might make. But we should still be encouraged by Kim Jong Un’s recent statements that he wants peace and is committed to stopping his nuclear weapons tests. A lot of hard work stands between where we are and where we want to go, but the Trump Administration deserves credit for bringing us this far. The key question is whether President Trump can produce a deal that completely ends that country’s nuclear weapons program. In his efforts, Trump is assisted by an all-star team of aides: Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, National Security Adviser John Bolton, and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.
