Nordic Semiconductor is certainly one of the leaders in the embedded space regarding microcontroller technology. Frankly, I feel like the company is one of the best-kept secrets. When I had the opportunity to speak with their (sort of) new CEO, I jumped at it. Hear my discussion with Vegard Wollan, Nordic's President and CEO, where he explains some of the moves he has made in his tenure, and what can be expected going forward, on this week's Embedded Executives podcast.

EYE ON NPI - Raytac MDBT50Q-1MV2 Module with Nordic Semiconductor nRF52840

This week's EYE ON NPI is teamwork makin' the dream work - a collaboration between our favorite module makers Raytac (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/raytac) and our favorite Bluetooth Low Energy designers, Nordic Semiconductor (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/nordic-semiconductor). Together they've created what we think is the best nRF52840 module, the Raytac MDBT50Q-1MV2 (https://www.digikey.com/short/t8hvw1bt). Historically you've had to pick this up direct from Raytac, but now it's stocked by DigiKey which is excellent news for anyone who wants to integrate the powerful nRF52840 with little fuss. The Nordic Semiconductor nRF52840 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF52840-QIAA-R/7725407) is not a new chip, we've been selling the Feather nRF52840 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/4062/9843410) since 2019 and the chip itself was announced in mid 2017 (https://www.nordicsemi.com/Nordic-news/2017/05/Nordic-Semiconductor-introduces-latest-nRF52-Series-SoC). It builds on the popular nRF52832 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF52832-QFAB-R/6051565), a chip with an Arm Cortex M4-F / 512K Flash / 64K SRAM, but with a ton more memory: the '840 has 1MB Flash and 256K SRAM. It also comes with native USB device support, which is new to the nRF series but makes product design easier because DFU and computer-interfacing doesn't require a second chip. The only challenge is that the nRF52840 itself is in a funky QFN package with pads underneath, and multiple rows, which requires either very fine traces, 4-layer boards, plugged vias, or a combination, in order to get to the 'inner' traces. Also, you have to get your antenna tuning right - even though the nRF is very forgiving, it's still extra effort! That's why at Adafruit we have been using Raytac's MDBT50Q-1MV2 Module (https://www.digikey.com/short/t8hvw1bt) for years, in our Feather nRF52840 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/4062/9843410), ItsyBitsy nRF52840 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/4481/11497502) and CLUE board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/4500/11594501). We like that it pick-and-places cleanly and easily on 2-layer PCBs with 8/8 rule DRC, comes with certifications, and has a couple different built-in antenna options, all tuned and ready. In particular, if you want a larger and/or external antenna check out the MDBT50Q-U1MV2 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/raytac/MDBT50Q-U1MV2/13968055) but we like the chip-antenna version the most. Either way, the module footprint is much easier to work with - you still have pads underneath but they're large, and you can easily fit vias in the unused spots. Just make sure you keep ground clearance around the antenna if you're using an on-module version. If you need tips on schematic and layout, just use our open source hardware design files to guide you - or check Nordic's devZone (https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/). If you've wanted to use the Nordic Semiconductor nRF52840 chip (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF52840-QIAA-R/7725407) for your ultra low-power Bluetooth LE products, but have hesitated due to the effort of integrating the QFN chip, we can't recommend the Raytac MDBT50Q-1MV2 module (https://www.digikey.com/short/t8hvw1bt) enough! And now that it's for sale through DigiKey, you can pick up some at a great price. Order today and you can BLE-ify your next design by tomorrow afternoon.

Ralph Hempel spoke with us about the development of Lego Mindstorms from hacking the initial interface to running Debian Linux as well as programming Mindstorms in Python. Happy 25th birthday to Lego Mindstorms! Pybricks is a MicroPython based coding environment that works across all Lego PoweredUp hubs and on the latest Mindstorms elements. The creators are David Lechner and Laurens Valk. Ralph was the first person to boot a full Debian Linux distro on the brick, see EV3Dev, a Debian Linux for Lego Mindstorms EV3.  BrickLink was originally a site for third party resellers of new and used Lego sets and elements. The site was purchased by the Lego Group a few years ago. It's still a great place to buy individual parts - for example a 4 port PoweredUp hub to run the new PyBricks on :-) ReBrickable is a site dedicated to taking off-the-shelf Lego sets, and creating something new with the set. In particular see the MOCs Designed by LUCAMOCS, fantastic Technic vehicles as well as interesting designs for vehicle subsystems.

EYE on NPI: Nordic Semiconductor's NRF7002 Companion IC

Adafruit Industries

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 23, 2023 14:24

This week's EYE ON NPI is your best buddy for broadband, it's Nordic Semiconductor's NRF7002 Companion IC (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nordic-semi/nrf7002-companion-ic), a wireless add-on chipset designed for the Nordic Semi nRF52 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/rf-transceiver-ics/879?s=N4IgTCBcDaIHIHsBOATAlgYwAQGUCmAtmlgHYBKAYgKwQC6AvkA) and nRF53 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/rf-transceiver-ics/879?s=N4IgTCBcDaIHYHsBOATAlgYwARyQMwFYBmEAXQF8g) ARM+Bluetooth and nRF91 ARM+Cellular (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/rf-transceiver-ics/879?s=N4IgTCBcDaIHIHsBOATAlgYwAQGUCmAtmlgHYBKAYgJwCMIAugL5A) to act as a WiFi peripheral. With the addition of the nRF7 series, Nordic now covers the three most popular wireless transports: Bluetooth LE, LTE Cellular, and WiFi! This is a pretty big deal, because it's their first foray into WiFi technology, so we expect that there will be more integration in the future. The nRF7002 is a standalone chip, which requires only a few passives and an antenna, that performs the low-level interfacing to communicate with WiFi networks. Data is transferred back and forth between the nRF7 and host processor using SPI or QSPI - for higher speeds!. At this time, it seems like the driver is only available via the Nordic SDK and using Zephyr RTOS (https://github.com/nrfconnect/sdk-nrf/tree/main/drivers/wifi/nrf700x) - both of which would be good options because the WiFi stack lives on the host chip which means an SSL implementation which can require significant RAM and Flash. You'll also need to store the chip patch firmware blob and transfer it over SPI on boot - again requiring storage or flash memory. So why use this chip instead of an integrated WiFi core? Well, one thing is you may want to connect to 5GHz networks (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels#5_GHz_(802.11a/h/j/n/ac/ax)), which the nRF7002 supports in addition to 2.4GHz, and you may need a processor with specific peripherals or quantity of GPIO or speed, or you're already using the nRF53 or nRF91 chipset - that's when the nRF7002 is going to shine. Nordic is also known for really good and complete SDK's for nicely documented and supported peripherals with excellent low-power numbers. For a fast start, grab the NRF7002-DK eval board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF7002-DK/17748188) that you can pick up with has an nRF53, JLink interface, antenna ports, and other accessories for quick bringup of a dual-BLE-WiFi design. It's still pretty early, but we can expect to see tinned modules come out into the market soon, for example Fanstel products are stocked at Digi-Key (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/rf-transceiver-modules-and-modems/872?s=N4IgTCBcDaIGYEMB2BnALgUwDYgLoF8g) and it looks like they're working on a few nRF7002 options (https://www.fanstel.com/nrf7002wifi6module). For software, it's also pretty early since this is a new chip, but there's lots of examples in the nRF SDK (https://github.com/nrfconnect/sdk-nrf/tree/main/drivers/wifi/nrf700x) and also example code on the Nordic developer blog for MQTT connection (https://github.com/AliNordic/mqtt_over_wifi_nrf7002DK) and friend-of-the-fruit Golioth has a quickstart on how to use the nRF7002 to connect to their cloud for pub-sub and RPC currying. (https://forum.golioth.io/t/nordics-brand-new-nrf7002-wi-fi-chip-already-works-with-golioth/166). You can also use Nordic's free apps for provisioning over BLE or Cellular (https://www.nordicsemi.com/products/development%20tools/nrf%20wi-fi%20provisioner) If you want to add the nRF7002 to your design, now's the time to check it out because Digi-Key has lots of the Nordic nRF7002 in stock (https://www.digikey.com/short/48b0317m) right now for immediate shipment! Order today to get full WiFi 6 support into your next core design by tomorrow afternoon, with a powerful front-end chip that supports dual bands and antenna co-existence.

EYE on NPI: Nordic nRF9160 System-in-Package

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 11, 2022 13:14

This week's EYE ON NPI comes to us from the brilliant wireless engineers at Nordic Semiconductor - it's the Nordic nRF9160 System-in-Package with Integrated Cellular and GNSS (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nordic-semi/nrf9160-sip). You know them for their popular nRF52 series of microcontrollers that have integrated Bluetooth LE - they're the market leaders for BLE development and support, with excellent software and low-power capabilities. A few years ago they decided to start branching out from their hit products and into more wireless IoT transports, like cellular and, more recently, WiFi (which perhaps we'll cover in a future EYE ON NPI!). The nRF91 series (https://www.nordicsemi.com/Products/nRF9160) is the Nordic Semi flagship cellular line, but it's different than most cell modules we've used. Normally you get a modules say from Quectel, and interface to it via USB or UART - sending AT commands (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayes_command_set) and parsing the responses. That's fine and good but means that there's often a secondary microcontroller that has to do the work, and there's always a lot of work to do that parsing and command handling. What we like about the nRF91 is that it comes as a cute SIP package, much smaller than most modules, and integrates an ARM Cortex M33 with 1MB of flash, 256KB of RAM that you can program directly. This is familiar to folks who use the nRF52 series, where the BLE stack is integrated in hardware/firmware through the 'SoftDevice' system. (https://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/ug_gsg_ses/UG/gsg/softdevices.html) You get all the hardware-interfacing you need with 32 GPIO, 12-bit ADC, RTC, SPI, I2C, I2S, UART, PDM and PWM which means that ideally you can develop your entire product on a single chip without need for external peripherals or drivers. The nRF91 comes in three flavors: nRF9160-SIAA (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF9160-SIAA-B1A-R7/13533593) which has only LTE-M cellular support, nRF9160-SIBA (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF9160-SIBA-B1A-R7/13533587) which has only NB-IOT support, and the nRF9160-SICA (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF9160-SICA-B1A-R7/13533588) which has LTE, NB-IOT and GNSS. Each one has is pin-compatible but has different price levels, so pick the one that fits your budget and wireless needs. Note there's full 700MHz - 2.2GHz band support on each version of the SIP, so you don't have to order different SIPs for North America, South America, Asia, Europe, Africa, etc. There are global certifications available that you can look up to make sure you are cleared to integrate in any country you may need (https://www.nordicsemi.com/Products/Low-power-cellular-IoT/nRF9160-Certifications) The Nordic nRF9160 modules have been out for a few years, so there's lots of development boards you can use. For example, Nordic's in-house made dev board is fully featured with every add-on needed, plus Arduino-compatible headers (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF9160-DK/9740721). There's also the extremely well-named Nordic Thingy 91 (https://www.digikey.com/en/videos/n/nordic-semiconductor/introducing-the-nordic-thingy-91-cellular-iot-prototyping-platform) which is a great dev kit for designing compact, battery powered, sensor-filled prototypes. The prior is better when you want to have JTAG headers and connect lots of external hardware, the latter is good if you happen to have some overlap with the built in hardware and want to prototype user experiences. If you are a Feather Fancier, there's an nRF9160 Feather (https://www.digikey.com/short/94tc2w84) that you can use to make lightweight portable designs that plug into FeatherWings. Best of all, all three versions of the nRF91 (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nordic-semi/nrf9160-sip) are in stock now for immediate shipment from Digi-Key! We recommend starting with the full-featured nRF9160-SICA (https://www.digikey.com/short/j97r25p7) as you can always place the final design with one of the pared down SIAA or SIBA when you go to production. Order today for instantaneous shipment, you'll have these in your hands by tomorrow afternoon.

It's getting hot here in New York City, we could use a little help cooling off, and this week's EYE ON NPI an ultra-cool blast of Nordic engineering - the nPM1100! It's the first power management IC from our favorite low-power-wireless company, Nordic Semiconductor. We've featured them on EYE ON NPI before - the Nordic Power Profiler Kit II (https://blog.adafruit.com/2020/12/03/eye-on-npi-nordic-power-profiler-kit-ii-eyeonnpi-digikey-nordictweets-digikey-adafruit/) and the nRF53840 microcontroller (https://blog.adafruit.com/2020/03/20/eye-on-npi-nordic-semiconductors-nrf5340-bluetooth-eyeonnpi-maximintegrated-digikey/) - and we've been using Nordic BLE chips for quite a while in our Bluefruit line of boards (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/rf-evaluation-and-development-kits-boards/859?s=N4IgTCBcDaIEYBsCuBTAZgJyQSwC4gF0BfIA) For us Nordic is synonymous with Wireless and Low Power. That's their bag, and if you need something that's BLE and runs on a small battery for a long time, it's probably the product like you're going to use. Even Apple, who have gotten serious into designing their own silicon used the Nordic nRF52 series for the AirTag (https://www.ifixit.com/News/50145/airtag-teardown-part-one-yeah-this-tracks) When you make products that are designed and marketed to be used for low power wireless - like motion trackers, beacons/tags, fitness watches/bracelets, environmental monitor, etc. the power management system becomes less of a independently-run subsection of the electronics design. As we've seen in other EYE ON NPI's, there may be times when you drop the voltage down or raise it up to change quiescent current and RF transmission. A lot of Cortex chips we've seen lately have integrated buck converters that can be enabled/disabled on demand - they have higher quiescent current than LDOs, but may have lower overall run current during high draw. Buck converters also require an inductor, of course, and will have higher noise. Getting long life from battery is very hard, much harder than people think, and requires good firmware, hardware and integration design. Given the creating of the PPK2, it seems obvious to us that a lot of Nordic's time has been spent trying to get their their customers going with the battery performance they need without doing their design for them. A lot of time folks don't understand the way quiescent currents add up to drain batteries. To solve this for Nordic's customers, they've pulled the PMIC's that were historically integrated into the nRF52840 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF52840-QIAA-R7/11200025), nRF5340 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF5340-QKAA-R/13559661) and nRF9160 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF9160-SICA-R/12339212) and super-powered it into the nPM1100 (https://www.digikey.com/short/38n9f9dv) - an all-in-one battery charger, regulator and buck converter. Ultra-small form factor PMIC 2.075 x 2.075 mm WLCSP package 400 mA battery charger Termination voltage: JEITA compliant 4.1 V or 4.2 V selectable Charge current: 20 mA to 400 mA Highly efficient Buck regulator Output voltage: 1.8, 2.1, 2.7 or 3.0 V Current limit: 150 mA output USB compatible input regulator Overvoltage protection Ship mode disables power output Quiescent currents: 800 nA typical, 460 nA in ship mode Drivers for charge and error LEDs -40°C to 85°C operating temperature Things we like - this chip is fully standalone and strapped with resistors or pins so you don't have to configure it over I2C or 1-Wire or anything and two direct LED outputs for instant visible feedback with a bi-color LED. Works with USB but has input protection for higher voltages in case something gets mis-plugged. Three-in-one integration design means you can pick and choose the pieces you want. It's clearly designed for boards that use sporadic power, and has a 'ship mode' to reduce power draw while its in storage/shipment to the customer - many of these devices don't have a true Off button/switch, so before the first use they'll want to be disabled/enabled with soft-switch buttons to wake up. In Nordic's case studies, they were able to up the run time of a wearable health-monitor bracelet by taking advantage of the buck converter to reduce run-time quiescent current. While designed for Nordic wireless chipsets, this PMIC would be well suited to wearable/low-power designs and you know that Nordic takes low power very seriously so this chip will hit the ground running with a tiny chip that does it all. Bare nPM1100 chips (https://www.digikey.com/short/5dwz72j7), as well as the eval boards (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NPM1100-EK/14310011?s=N4IgTCBcDaIHYAcC2BGFAGdIC6BfIA) are in stock right now for immediate shipment! Order today and you can integrate into your low-power design to reduce space and increase battery life all at the same time.

Welcome to the latest “EYE on NPI” with the Nordic nRF5340 Bluetooth Microcontroller – available for purchase from Digi-Key. https://www.digikey.com/products/en/rf-if-and-rfid/37?k=nrf5340&newproducts=1 What is EYE on NPI? The acronym NPI stands for New Product Introduction and sometimes you’ll also see NPD (New Product Development). EYE on NPI will showcase, spotlight, and discuss the latest new products and announcements from the entire component industry. EYE on NPI will help engineers go from prototype to market and get important information on pricing and availability. The more you know, the more you can reduce time-to-market, the more you increase the quality of the product(s) and reduce production costs! Adafruit releases dozens of new products per month. We live, eat, and breathe datasheets and we wanted to share our NPI process with everyone: how we get to market quickly, and what the latest NPIs are out there. ====== This week’s EYE ON NPI takes a peek at the new chips coming from Nordic Semi – makers of some great wireless chipsets and their new major chipset release, the nRF5340! We’ve been huge fans of the nRF5 series, which has combined a powerful microcontroller and a 2.4GHz BLE radio. We started with the nRF51 which we’ve used in our popular Feather 32u4 Bluefruit LE board, and then moved onto the nRF52 series which is used in the Circuit Playground Bluefruit. So naturally we’re very interested in the latest major version of this family – the nRF5340. Please note: this is a really new NPI, so new that this part is an engineering sample and is not fully tested. There may be silicon bugs that will be fixed in the final release. Even if it’s not ready for mass manufacture, it’s a great time to start prototyping or developing with it. According to Nordic: The nRF5340 is the world’s first wireless SoC with two Arm® Cortex®-M33 processors. The nRF5340 is an all-in-one SoC, including a superset of the most prominent nRF52® Series features. Features like Bluetooth® Direction Finding, high-speed SPI, QSPI, USB, up to 105°C operating temperature, and more, are combined with more performance, memory and integration, while minimizing current consumption. The application processor is optimized for performance and can be clocked at either 128 or 64 MHz, using voltage-frequency scaling. It has 1 MB Flash, 512 KB RAM, a floating-point unit (FPU), an 8 KB 2-way associative cache and DSP instruction capabilities. The network processor is clocked at 64 MHz and is optimized for low power and efficiency (101 CoreMark/mA). It has 256 KB Flash and 64 KB RAM. The most interesting thing about this new chip is how powerful the processors are – they’ve upgraded the nRF52840’s Cortex-M4 to two M33’s, and doubled the max clock speed to 128 MHz. The second processor will be useful for products where you have very specific real-time requirements, as the Nordic radio software (SoftDevice) can interrupt user code to handle incoming packets. It’s better if you can dedicate one core to handling all radio requirements, and any secure/encryption/sync/authentication work, so the main thread can run on another processor to handle user interface requirements. This chip is powerful enough to run DOOM You can pick up nRF5340 chips right now from DigiKey, and don’t forget to also grab an nRF5340 preliminary dev kit as well. We’re a fan of the Nordic DK’s: they’re very complete and easy to use with built in J-Link program/debug, just-the-right-amount of peripherals, and power monitoring support, all for a really great price.
