This episode of BOOKSPO is guaranteed to put a song in your head, as Michelle Hébert tells me all about how revisiting Emma Donoghue's 1997 story collection KISSING THE WITCH helped her discover solutions to problems she was facing in developing the characters in EVERYTHING LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC, her debut novel, which is out this week and pretty magic in its own right. Hébert tells me about the serendipitous way in which she's managed to build her own fairy tale library, about what Donoghue's twists on familiar tales showed her about understanding difficult characters' motivations, about how female characters are so often adversarial and she wanted to do something different, the leap she took to couple her story of age-old curses and fairy tale tropes with a brilliant 1980s' pop and rock soundtrack, about how maybe ‘80s pop culture and the world of fairy tales are not so incongruous after all, and names the most bonkers ‘80s song of all time, which turns up on her novel's soundtrack. About EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC: Kitten Love's family is haunted by the memory of her teenaged aunt, Nerida, who died just days before Kitten's birth in 1970. Her mother, Queena, believes the family is cursed, and she's determined not to let disaster strike again. She won't let Kitten out of her sight—especially to visit the beaches that surround the town. She's built a bomb shelter to protect against Soviet attack, and she's desperate to protect her husband, Stubby, from the fatal and mysterious Love Heart.Kitten thinks she knows how to defeat their curse: magic. But when protection spells and clues from tarot cards aren't enough to save Stubby, Kitten turns her back on the things that make her life magical, and Queena turns her back on reality. She preserves everything as it was the day Stubby died in 1987—from the gold shag rug in the bathroom to the Duran Duran posters in Kitten's room. Kitten, herself, is forbidden to change.Kitten tastes freedom when she falls in love and moves to British Columbia, but reinventing herself without the curse is harder than she expects. Tragedy and her own reliance on magical thinking eventually lead her back home to Queena, her brother Thom, and Aunt Bunny, who are equally stuck in their pasts. When tarot cards begin mysteriously showing up in her room, warning of a betrayal and encouraging an unlikely romance, she's certain someone is watching her. Could the heartbreak that almost destroyed Kitten's family be the very thing that helps them move on?A darkly humorous family saga woven around tarot cards and a mixtape of '80s songs, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic is a heady mix of music, ghosts, love, and nostalgia.Michelle Hébert grew up on the beaches and marshes of Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. She has an MFA in Creative Nonfiction, degrees in journalism and social work, and she studies tarot on the side. Her writing about mental health, social justice, and finding joy where it seems there's none to be had has appeared in Writerly magazine and in audio essays and short documentaries for CBC Radio. Her first book, Enriched by Catastrophe: Social Work and Social Conflict After the Halifax Explosion, was published in 2009. Michelle has lived across Canada but makes her home in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Mi'kma'ki), with several cats, a dog, and her two adult children. In high school, Queena Johnson learned of a looming threat in the plumbing industry: ten plumbers were retiring for every one hire. That meant job security. So she took the apprentice exam and scored very high but didn't accept a position until she graduated, eventually becoming a master plumber at 23 years old. Her first job was at DSI screwing in check valves at the Great Wolf Lodge — it lasted two weeks and she was told, as a female, she was garnering too much attention from her male employees. After they “let her go” she moved over to Brandt (a mechanical, electrical, and plumbing service provider in DFW) where she worked the rest of her career in the Local 100 Plumbing and Pipefitters Union on high profile projects like Children's Health and Parkland Hospital. In fact, one of her first instructors in the union, for the LEED AP class, was the expert plumber himself, Roger Wakefield. She excelled at reading blueprints. Her favorite classes were isometric drawing and soldering and brazing, and orbital welding as a 5th year. She enjoyed rigging class even though it was difficult. Overall, Queena recommends going straight into the skilled trades out of high school, and if parents are pushing their kids to college, they're most likely projecting their own aspirations onto their children. Now she is the owner and operator of the full-service company, HER Plumbing serving the Dallas Fort-Worth Metroplex.

Yumi introduced me to Queena whose studio is in the same building as Ore Art. They wanted to improvise a sound bath together. Improvising with other people is always a challenge but the rewards can be great. Trust is a big part of a successful performance and their performances were pretty amazing. Queena played a single medium size gong while Yumi played her large symphonic gong. Their improvisations yielded emotional and moving recordings and are some of my favorite. Even though they seldom play together, their connection and dialogue borders on instinct. For this recording, Queena and Yumi sat on opposite ends of the room with their backs to each other. I thought it would be interesting to have a separate rhythm and sound immersing the listener. The placement of the gongs resulted in an interesting dramatic imbalance.
Podcast Energy Talk punya episode terbaru nih...

This session was recorded with Queena and her gong on the left and Yumi's large symphonic and titanium drum on the right. Queena played a slow, subtle, monotonous rhythm as the sonic foundation for Yumi's powerful playing. The steady rhythm is your anchor, guiding you through the wilderness of sound. Sound Bath 014 featuring Queena and Yumi at Queena's studio in Sheung Wan now available to listen on all major podcasting platforms. Search for Sound Bath Sessions on your favorite podcast app. See sbsessions.com for details. Queena and Yumi played together for their sessions. This is perhaps the most musical and expressive recording I have recorded so far and is representative of the kind of recordings I have been fortunate to record these past few months. It is the one that had the most effect on me. Every time I listen to this, I am just overwhelmed. It is just beautiful. They begin playing the bowls and titanium gong. Starting at the pace of life, it is full of energy and music. Heavy hits on the bowls shake the senses as mixed musical sequences create a pleasant environment. She shares the sonic space with Yumi as she awakens the gong- swelling, swallowing everything. As she retreats, the bowls slowly come up for air with their song. The bowls begin to become less varied as Queena strikes only a few bowls at a time, sometimes striking a single bowl until its constant ring fills your ears. The striking stops. Descent is imminent. A rain box is flipped as it creates a constant shower. The next scene begins. Everything slows way down. The last rhythm is played as Yumi signals a transition with a single hit of her large symphonic gong. What happens next is a dance. The synergy between them is amazing. You are enraptured with their song as it embraces you and takes you lower and lower until the veil is removed and you realize where you are. Love and loss. Light and dark. Everything and nothing. It is balance. It is powerful. It is deep. The pressure crushes you as you take shallow breaths. You find them again as they pull you to the surface. They conclude playing with the rain box. As the last few stones trickle down, they end with their final note as you break the surface and take a breath. On this episode I talk with Emma Mumford who is the UK's leading Law of Attraction expert. Emma's first business was all about helping people get out of debt, and though she was very happy with it she wasn't feeling fulfilled and she was struggling with depression and anxiety. She knew she wanted to change her life and there was a pivotal moment at 2 AM where she just “surrendered and opened up to help, divine help from the universe”. The help came in the form of the Law of Attraction, which she started seeing everywhere, and she tells us: “in the space of three weeks my whole life looked so different”. After realizing that the 3 steps of the Law of Attraction “ask, believe, receive” were not comprehensive enough and quite “old school”, she turned them into the 5 steps she teaches her clients and followers and she breaks them down for us here for you to put into practice... and Emma's adamant, “it really does work, and it really is for everybody”. In this episode Dr. Gaye Lang and Queena Grant discuss: The effect of seeing other people like yourself Targeting specific groups to promote equity How to secure a diverse selection of people Being intentional and keeping people accountable Key Takeaways: When people don't see others that look like them in high places, people aren't encouraged to aspire. Be specific with your actions, intentionally target groups that are not given a lot of opportunity, focus on them and give them the tools they need to succeed. When looking for the right candidates, do the work yourself. Don't leave it all to job sites or headhunters to do it because you might not get diverse selection. Keep the higher ups accountable. When they say they're going to do something - remind them to follow-up on their word. “Be very deliberate and intentional about the population that you want to target and the profile of the person that you want to target, have smart goals. Hold your organizations accountable.” - Queena Grant Connect with Queena Grant: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/queena-grant-418a2a9/ Connect with Dr. Gaye Lang: Don't forget to subscribe to the show, so that you don't miss a single episode; and please leave a rating and review. Allan & Queena shares an insightful devotional on what it means to truly worship God. Let's be reminded of the reason, essence and means of our acceptable and proper worship to the King. Romans 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

One aspect of our life that we tend to overlook is taking care of our mental health. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. On this episode, we had a chat with Dr. Queena Lee-Chua PhD to shed some light on the warning signs that we should be conscious of, to know the right way to respond and help others who needs help, and more importantly to know when to seek help. It's okay not to be okay. Vanna Nguye had big dreams for her 18 year old daughter. Queena was a high school senior, with a full scholarship to college. She worked, volunteered with hospice patients and was a joy to be around. That all changed the night she went to return books to the Bloomingdale library. That's the night everything changed. Queena was viciously raped, beaten and left for dead. Listen as I chat with Vanna, Queena's mother about survival and how it runs in their family. In 1982, an 18-year-old Vietnamese girl named Vanna escaped communist oppression in her homeland; sailing in a rickety boat and braving violent pirate attacks to get to America.

Day 18: Surprise and disappointment in myself and my output; night rowing and the allure of the cabin lights; my race is over after 700 miles; conditions change and the daunting reality of the mammoth task ahead without a functioning steering system; getting spat out of wind tunnels and the exhausting process to try to get back in; the colossal upper body strength needed to realign the boat and the demoralising reality that this fight was never one I could win but would be faced with daily; my connection puzzle/strategy, letters from home and an emotional punch in the gut; a ship and a dredger so far from land?; A competitive animal by nature or nurture. Day 19: A new year; no dramas for 24hrs; grinding, grinding, grinding; strength, concentration and monitoring waves to steer; never giving up the hard fight; the first inkling of sores; moving around the seat to steer; a weak nod to backside maintenance but was it already too late?; a lucky revive, Queena and the silent AIS. The Life She Once Knew with Vanna Nguyen & Anna Donato - Episode 396 Disclaimer:Today's episode, while ultimately about faith and forgiveness, contains mature themes dealing with sexual assault so please use your discretion. In 1981, a mother faced death as she lay on the floor of a small boat in the South China Sea fleeing for her life after the Vietnam War.In 2008, her daughter lay awaiting death after being brutally raped and beaten while returning books at the Bloomingdale Regional Library. The brutal attack against Queena left her with a traumatic brain injury and the inability to walk, see, or speak. While Vanna Nguyen poured herself into helping her severely disabled daughter after the attack, she also struggled with reliving her own history, and more so, with how to forgive the young man who hit her daughter so forcefully that he cracked her skull, stole her daughter's innocence, took away her daughter's future, and changed both their lives forever. In her new book, The Life She Once Knew, (Published by Ambassador International) Vanna Nguyen speaks candidly about faith, love, and forgiveness through hard times and chronicles the deeply emotional and powerful journeys of these two women as they fight for their lives and their futures decades apart.Links:Buy The Book: https://amzn.to/3nw3qcUBook Web Site: https://thelifesheonceknew.com/Vanna's wish is that this book's proceeds can support ongoing expenses through Hope Heals the Brain, Inc. and Queena's Medical Trust Fund. #17 - When Queena became a single mom she soon realized no one taught her how to be independent let alone an adult. She spent her 20s raising her children while trying to figure out how to raise herself. One night she got pulled over and got a DUI. That started a whirlwind of experiences she wasn't sure would ever end. Show notes HERE.Follow Katie on Instagram
Queena Tahi hosts a podcast called Mompreneur BFF & speaks about all things motherhood & also social media. She loves hearing other moms, Mr. Moms, & non-moms share their stories of different definitions of motherhood. Erin has only been a dog mom, and says there shouldn’t be expectations based on age, since everyone’s journey is different. As Queena works from her home in Hawaii, she mentions how she went from a young mom to a business owner, & encourages moms to engage with each other since more often than not, they don’t have many adult conversations while raising their children. She shares the power of networking as she found other Polynesian women whom she would not have met if she didn’t start her podcast. Erin & Queena discuss their enjoyment of podcasting & Queena suggests just starting since everyone’s first try is only practice & you improve over time. Queena now helps women with social media content, with a focus on video, especially Instagram’s IGTV. On June 14, 2018, Ellen Schall Agnew delivered a Banner Lecture, “Farm to Easel: Queena Stovall’s Evolution as an Artist.” Self-taught Virginia artist Emma Serena “Queena” Stovall started painting and was “discovered” in 1949 at the age of sixty-two. Over the next two decades she recorded on canvas in meticulous detail the rural life, labors, activities, and people surrounding her home near the Blue Ridge mountains in Elon, Virginia. Stovall’s discovery came ten years after that of famed folk artist Anna Mary Robertson (“Grandma”) Moses in 1939, and at the cusp of dramatic changes in the art world with non-objective art gaining notoriety and popularity in such major art centers as New York. Sandwiched between Moses’ bucolic New England scenes and the world’s changing social, political, and economic order following the World War II, Stovall’s evolution as an artist proves a fascinating study. Ellen Schall Agnew will consider Stovall’s place within this spectrum of twentieth-century art through the personal relationships she established and fostered within the art world with professional artists, art dealers, and scholars. Insights into how Stovall was viewed as an artist and how Stovall saw herself as an artist will be examined through personal correspondence and print media during the years she painted.
