Dean DeSoto has been teaching his driving class for aggressive drivers over the past 26 years. During that time, he has come to believe several things. One is that what goes on in the country will play out on its roadways. Another is that anger on the roads is getting worse. Across the country, the number of people injured or killed in road rage incidents involving a gun has doubled since 2018, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit research group. There is no uniform definition of aggressive driving across law enforcement agencies and no national database to track it, but DeSoto has been keeping his own tally, including cases in Texas involving guns, knives, ice picks, 2-by-4s, tire tools, PVC pipe, plumbing pipe, bats, hammers, shovels, hatchets, ball bearings, marbles, frozen water bottles, bricks, stones and, in at least one instance, a spear. This story follows attendees of DeSoto's class as well as a police officer who encounters rage from motorists in Texas. The piece was reported, written and read by Ruby Cramer. Audio production and original music by Bishop Sand.

The Bloody History of New York's Chinatown Tong WarsIntroductionWelcome to a dark chapter in American history—the Tong Wars of New York City's Chinatown. For over three decades in the early 1900s, the streets ran red with blood as rival Chinese gangs clashed in a deadly struggle for supremacy. Today, we delve into this brutal hidden past, exploring the rise of tongs, their violent conflicts, and the legacy they left behind. The Birth of Tongs1. From Community Support to CrimeChinese immigrants faced immense challenges in America. Discriminatory laws, such as the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, denied them citizenship, equal rights, and economic opportunities. In response, some Chinese formed secret societies known as tongs. Initially, these brotherhoods served as community support networks, providing mutual aid and protection.2. The Dark Side EmergesHowever, unchecked political power led the tongs down a treacherous path. They infiltrated lucrative underground industries—gambling, drugs, and prostitution. The tongs transformed from protectors to predators, wielding influence over Chinatown's shadowy economy.Tong Wars: A Reign of Terror1. Mob Bosses and KingpinsEnter the era of mob bosses and kingpins. Names like Mock Duck echoed through the narrow alleys. Sworn brotherhoods turned into ruthless criminal enterprises. Their turf wars escalated into all-out street warfare.2. Hatchets, Bullets, and BombsThe violence knew no bounds. Hatchet attacks, meat cleavers, drive-by shootings—each act demanded revenge. The tongs operated with impunity, leaving a trail of bodies. Police raids, arrests, and fruitless negotiations couldn't quell the carnage.3. The Great Depression's ImpactIt took an external shock—the 1929 Great Depression—to break the cycle. With revenue drying up and members starving, the tongs shifted focus. Welfare services replaced hatchets. The blood feud waned, but the scars remained.Legacy and Lessons1. Survival and AdaptationThe tongs survived by adapting. They weathered racism, economic turmoil, and internal strife. Their legacy reminds us of resilience in the face of adversity.2. A Warning from HistoryThe Tong Wars serve as a warning. They reveal the consequences of unchecked power, violence, and desperation. As we explore this hidden past, let's remember that history echoes through time.ConclusionThe streets of Chinatown may have healed, but the ghosts of the Tong Wars linger. Let's learn from their blood-soaked legacy. As we navigate our present, may we choose a path that leads to progress, not destruction.Remember, beneath the neon lights of any city, hidden stories await.

This episode carries content warnings for death, the description of corpses, false memories, illusions, vomiting, and medical experimentation. Where has the crew of the Blue Channel gone? For Eclectic Opposition, the answer is easy, if dire: In the passenger seat of a Baseline-C security vehicle, under the watchful eyes of the Divine Resonance, scrambling for a way out. For the support staff, like Hunting Tomorrow and Partial Palisade, the answer is scanning for the others. And those others? They are so close—under five miles away from the ship's landing zone—yet so, so far. Deep in the Catacombs of Dust. Deeper, still, living new lives, considering what might be, what might have been, and what yet might still come. This week on PALISADE: Seize the Chance Pt. 5 Let loose the wide world that holds you / Scratch through / Your waves linger Dossier People Partial Palisade (he/him): A man who was once a Divine, now living in the shell of a being quite unlike what he once was. Midnite Matinee (she/her): Leporine scout and member of the Blue Channel. She and her trusty Pack-model light AutoHollow Popcorn used to run a repo company, but now are tentatively committed to the Cause and Millennium Break. Elle Evensong (she/they): Elle arrived to Palisade along with the first wave of Devotees, making a name for herself as a cunning combatant and clever commander. She became a poster child for Twilight Mirage's support of Palisade (and, for members of the Dim Liturgy, a prophesied bridge between the past and the future). But as the war began to heat up, she seemed to vanish into the background. In fact, they were working for the Divine, Arbitrage as a double agent. Cori blames them for the death of her father. Pilot of the Cataphract. Murchy “Murch” Saltburn (she/her): A gig-cop working for Lock & Cross Security Services in Baseline-C.  Alise Breka (she/her): Once, Alise was most popular for her Renegade Hearts books of daring pulp adventure. Now she is one of the chief propagandists of Millennium Break, turning their struggles (and victories) into novels, screenplays, and other media. Factions Bilateral Intercession: One of two factions vying for leadership of the Principality, comprised by Stels Kesh and Nideo, and lead by the so-called Peaceful Princept, Cynosure Whitestar-Kesh (he/him), who took control of the faction from the Curtain, a secretive intelligence organization with roots in Kesh's ancient spy operations. The “Bilats” are a conservative and reactionary force, aiming to return the Principality to its roots both literally and figuratively. After a long campaign against the Pact of Free States, they managed to take control of Palisade. The Bilateral Intelligence Service: Formerly called the Curtain, the BIS is a Kesh-operated organization which specializes in espionage, subterfuge, and surveillance. Recently removed from power on Palisade Stel Kesh: The oldest established power in the galaxy, built around a stuffy (and secretive) aristocracy. They are tied to the Past. History, knowledge, stubbornness. Stel Nideo: Created the largest faith in the empire, and used that influence to shape (and surveil) mass culture. They are tied to the Present. Faith, coercion, stability. The Frontier Syndicate: A powerful conglomerate with a broad purview, including technology, heavy industry, entertainment, telecommunications, and transportation. Led by Exenceaster March (he/him), the Syndicate betrayed the Pact of Free States and joined the Bilats in order to be part of their colonization efforts on Palisade. The Pact of Free States: One of the two factions vying for leadership of the Principality, a joint operation by Stels Columnar and Apostolos. Led in name by the Glorious Princept, Dahlia (they/them), but operated in day-to-day matters by members of the original Pact of Necessary Venture, including Rye (he/him) and Gallica (she/her). Though they are reformist in some ways, their primary goal is greater autonomy for each Stel, freedom from the legal restraints, taxes, and oversights demanded by the Principality, with additional deregulation to follow downstream. Fabreal Duchy: When the Divine Principality left Palisade nearly 5,000 years ago, they left behind a Duke and his barons as caretakers. In the generations that followed, they ruled as petty tyrants, creating Delegates as their slaves, remaking their bodies into glass and oil, and extending their reach across Palisade's continents. Though they officially report to their handlers in Stel Kesh, recently they have begun to wonder if things were better before the Principality's return to Palisade. Places Diadem Gravtrain: While the vast trench-city on Palisade's equator lays abandoned, Kesh has reactivated its railway via an operations center in the city of Carmathen. Collier: The agricultural world where Thisbe was dug up and eventually sold to mercenaries. A planet that, due to the Farmer's Rebellion, was removed from all Principality maps and effectively abandoned. Became the "breadbasket" of Millennium Break, a farming world to support the revolutionary movement. Divines The Divine Filigree: The instrumentalized operating core of Palisade's extensive GravTrain system. Currently being taken into Dust's catacombs by the affliction's minions.  The Divine Motion (she/her): One of the founding members of the Pact, the necromantic Apostolosian divine once led its infamous retinue, the Black Century, on Partizan. They were defeated and dispersed, turned into part of Kalmeria, during Operation Shackled Sun.  The Divine, Arbitrage (it/its): The amoral machine turned de facto treasurer keeps the Frontier Syndicate a step ahead in all matters of commerce. Sole minter of “glint,” a newly popular currency on Palisade. The Divine Integrity (it/its): Sometimes appearing as an articulated staff or a metallic spine, Integrity integrates itself into its chosen user. Once the two are connected, Integrity becomes a powerful exoskeleton, and supports its user in matters of military and morale. Until being assassinated by Brnine, Dahlia, the Glorious Princept, was the elect of Integrity. The Divine Resonance (it/its): The watchful guardian, doting caregiver, and ardent supporter of Nideo's colonial efforts on Palisade. Asepsis (it/its): The final living remnants of a Divine who pursues its particular vision of purity at the cost of everything else. Kept, studied, and utilized by Captain Kalvin Brnine.  Objects The Broken Spoke: The Figure's bipedal and asymmetrical mech, The Broken Spoke is made of a matte crystaline material that has Russian Sage seemingly sprouting out between its joints. It has stout legs. Its right arm carries a glaive; its left "arm", or what would pass as such, is an oversized cannon with an attached shield. This oversized half of the mech is covered by a flowing cloak. BAC Hatchets: Appearing like fantastical knights made of tooth enamel, the Divine Consecration's latest machine of war, derived from parts recovered from the Divines Felicity and Souciance, buried inside of Chimera's Lantern. The Hatchets wield axes that sport long, weaponized chains running from the bottom of their hafts, and the materials used in their construciton make them sturdier than most front line units. The trio of Hatchets deployed by Stel Nideo to capture the "train brain" are piloted by three brothers: Calamedes, Caspin, and Caydor. Saint: A series of mechs piloted by knights that served the original Crown of Glass, a major power on the pre-Divine Principality-era Twilight Mirage world of Quire.   Mysteries Perennial (she/her):  The Principality's so-called 'adversary,' who lives at the center of the galaxy and whose chaotic whims spread through her "Perennial Wave," an ever-present nanoparticle that has recently bonded with Kalmeria. The Five Afflictions: A group of “monstrous” beings that haunt the dark corners of Palisade. They have been named as follows: Dust a.k.a Pride's Mirror a.k.a. The Looking Glass Refrain a.k.a. Yesterday's Reprise  a.k.a. The Ghastly Chorus Ravel a.k.a. Labyrinth's Thread a.k.a. The Hedge Maze  Cleave a.k.a. Whetstone's Opposite a.k.a. The Sanguine Hatchet  Oversight a.k.a. Hell's Facade a.k.a. The Empty Garden Flash Nautilus: An alien creature who uses plasma-energy for propulsion. Compelled into service by Stel Nideo. Additional Notes Delegates: In plain terms, Delegates are synthetic individuals created through a process of forcible extraction from a living Divine. Originated by the Fabreal Duchy, who were left behind to "attend to" Palisade by the Divine Principality around 5000 years ago, these Delgates were designed and used as slaves. Currently, a Delegate resistance group called Reunion operates out of the fortress Joyous Guard in the Caldera Stretch.   Hosted by Austin Walker (@austin_walker) Featuring Janine Hawkins (@bleatingheart) Sylvi Bullet (@sylvibullet), Ali Acampora (@ali_west), Art Martinez-Tebbel (@atebbel), Jack de Quidt (@notquitereal), Keith J Carberry (@keithjcarberry) and Andrew Lee Swan (@swandre3000) Produced by Ali Acampora  Music by Jack de Quidt (available on bandcamp) Text by Austin Walker Cover Art by by aurahack (aurahack.jp) With thanks to Arthur B., chocoube, DB, deepFlaw, Edwin Adelsberger, Emrys, Greg Cobb, huw, Ian O'Dea, Ian Urbina, Irina A., Jack Shirai, K. This episode carries content warnings for state surveillance.  The crew of the Blue Channel battles their way towards a train heading east. Inside one of its cars is the Diadem Grav Train control system, a device that could turn the tide of the war on Palisade and grant the Cause a major logistical advantage. But the members of Millennium Break aren't the only ones in search of the so-called “train brain.” On the world of Palisade, chaos now rules. The question remains: Who will end up in control? This week on PALISADE: Seize the Chance Pt. 3 And all through the dust / You feel that you must hear the strings of a dove Dossier People Partial Palisade (he/him): A man who was once a Divine, now living in the shell of a being quite unlike what he once was. The Paint Shop: Sitting atop the central peak of Steeple Catterick, this faux-commune was once the central HQ of the Bilateral HQ on Palisade. Now it has gone quiet. Divines The Divine Motion (she/her): One of the founding members of the Pact, the necromantic Apostolosian divine once led its infamous retinue, the Black Century, on Partizan. Question: Do you have a survival axe? How about a machete, or even a pocketknife? Do you have a hatchet or a tomahawk? Why do you need more than one large bladed tool? We'll tell you in this episode. Topic: AXES, MACHETES, HATCHETS, TOMAHAWKS, AND SHARPENING OUR BLADESHatchet: A hatchet is small, lightweight axe, ideal for chopping small branches and splitting kindling. It is easy to carry and can be used with one hand.  Camp Axe The camp axe is a medium-sized axe, more suitable for chopping larger branches and even splitting small logs. It is heavier than a hatchet and requires two hands to use.  Tomahawk: The tomahawk is a very versatile tool, and can be used for chopping, cutting, and even throwing. It is lightweight and easy to carry. The head of the tomahawk usually has a blade on one end, and a pick on the other. It is a VERY popular choice for survivalists because of its light weight, versatility, and the ability to use it as a defensive weapon.Splitting MaulThis is a very heavy-duty axe designed for splitting firewood or large logs.It is heavy, thick, has a wedge-shaped head that can deliver a powerful blow.  Tactical AxeThis is the traditional axe that is designed for self-defense and combat situations. It typically has a sharp, pointed head and a sturdy handle.  Felling Axe: Heavy axe used for chopping down trees. It has a long handle and a sharp, curved blade that is designed to cut through wood fibers. This is available as a single-bit (single cutting edge) or a double-bit (two cutting edges) axe.Broad AxeThis large, heavy axe is used for shaping logs and timbers. It has a wide, flat blade that is designed to remove large amounts of wood with each stroke.    MacheteA machete is basically a long knife designed for chopping or hacking through heavy brush. Here are some key things to look for in a machete:Blade material Get a high-quality blade made from durable materials such as carbon steel or stainless steel. A good blade will hold its edge well and resist rust and corrosion.  Blade length Machete blades can be around 12 inches in length, or even over 24 inches. Choose a length that is appropriate for your needs.  Blade thicknessThe thicker the machete blade is, the more durable and better suited it will be for heavy-duty tasks such as chopping through thick vegetation. A thinner blade will be lighter and easier to handle for more precise tasks.  Handle material Look for a comfortable, non-slip handle that provides a good grip. Handles made from materials such as rubber or textured plastic are ideal.A Good SheathYou'll need a good sheath to protect your machete when not in use and to make it easier, and safer, to carry. Look for a sheath made from durable materials that fits your machete securely.   Let's touch on buying a good pocket knife. Here are some things to consider when buying a pocket knife:  Blade MaterialThe blade material is one of the most important factors to consider when buying a good pocket knife. Look for a knife with a high-quality steel blade that is durable and holds a sharp edge. Some popular blade materials include stainless steel, carbon steel, and Damascus steel.  Blade Shape Different blade shapes are designed for different tasks. For example, a drop point blade is great for general use, and a Tanto blade is ideal for piercing and slicing.  Handle Material Be sure that your knife is comfortable to hold and provides a good grip. Some popular handle materials include wood, bone, and synthetic materials like G10 or m

when I was growing up, calls for firearm regulation were often met with the reply, “if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” Look back on this piece of logic, no one would want to live in a society where the men responsible for “Green Grass & High Tides” were toting guns, however it doesn't seem as though it would be very difficult to keep an eye on them (even with all the lineup changes). I'm not sure I understand why it would make more sense to expect educators to arm themselves versus a) outlawing guns, b) keeping The Outlaws and all spinoffs (“The New Outlaws”, “The Original Outlaws”, “Henry Paul's Outlaws”, Blackhawk etc.) under surveillance, but if I spend any more time on Twitter today, someone is absolutely going to explain it to me.

Things were going so well, incredibly well. Travis Wilcox, uncharacteristically, had taken a chance and it was paying off in a big way. He is, by his own account "the most conservative person on the planet." Risk-taking is not in his nature, and even he himself seemed surprised by his desire to start a business, a very unique business at that. But something about this idea would not leave him alone. He "felt compelled to try it." After months of research, gathering feedback from family and entrepreneurial friends, creating business plans and giving presentations–perhaps trying to persuade himself as much as anybody else that this could work–Travis took the leap and decided to start Heber Hatchets.Travis got his first taste of hatchet throwing at a Christmas party. Before trying it, he, like many of us, was skeptical as to how hatchet throwing could possibly be feasible–not as a business, that was definitely not on his radar–but just the physical act itself.  Could any non-pioneer-mountain-man possibly throw an axe several feet and get it to stick into a wooden target? Multiple times? And is that fun? After actually trying it though, also like many of us, he was hooked. When he began thinking about possibly starting his own venue, he took family, and then entrepreneurs he respected, to various hatchet throwing places to give it a go. He wanted them to see what this axe throwing thing was all about. Everybody seemed to agree that it was a great time, and that Travis was on to something with his business idea. Travis moved his business plans forward. When it came time to find a location, he rented a warehouse in his hometown of Heber. The location was a bit off the beaten path, but would be a relatively inexpensive option. He would later realize that that had been a mistake–he had paid too much attention to his inner anti-risk-taker–but at the time, it seemed like keeping the overhead as low as possible was the best course of action. Before their doors had even opened, a great opportunity emerged. After Travis' daughter had set up a meeting between her father and the Provo-based escape room venue, Get Out Games. The businesses decide to form a partnership.Heber Hatchets started up in July 2018. In August of the same year, Heber Hatchets in Provo opened for business. These venues, especially in Provo, where Heber Hatches was located on the town's main strip, were incredibly popular. Hatchet throwing was a hit and the business was a success. By December of 2018, another location had opened in Logan. At the beginning of 2019, two locations were opened in Idaho, followed by one in Spokane. Another Heber Hatchets was set to open its doors in 2020 in Kennewick, WA. Everything was built out, everything was ready. Things were moving fast. And then COVID hit. The pandemic has crippled every industry that involves people getting together and Heber Hatchets has taken a severe hit. Closed for months, but still responsible for paying rent, utilities and other overhead, the business is lucky to have survived, and that was only due to earlier atypical but prudent management decisions. The weakest location (and namesake of the company) in Heber, has had to shut down, but the others remain, and have even reopened, though in a very limited, and less lucrative COVID capacity. Despite all this, Travis remains optimistic.Learn more about Travis, his story, his entertaining and unique business, the difficulties he's seen, the mistakes he's made, and the advice he has for other entrepreneurs, and Ete's obsession with The Blue Dot in this episode of The Company Next Door.

Some ideas are discussed on how this bird is going to be prepared.  And how these guys are liking their pellet grill setups.  As always a great back and forth episode that you will enjoy.Show NotesAdam and John of Bowhunter Chronicles have taken some large steps this year when it comes to filming their hunts.  Up first was John to take a Tom in the earlier season, and Adam running the cameras.  Not only was teamwork essential on this hunt, having to “read minds” on when birds were in close, but also juggle the new challenge of social distancing.  John recalls his lack of preparedness that afternoon and was surprised by a flock running in.  He was able to connect with one of his arrows that Nick calls “a hatchet with fletchings” (Full length arrow with a 4 inch cutting dia. Broadhead, with a total weight over 600 gr.)Now that the bird was down and measured, some discussion went into how they were going to prepare this Tom.  Nick shares a tip about using pickle brine that he got from a friend to make moist tender white meat.  John also goes into detail about his experience with a  very nice pellet grill.  He gives some pros and cons and explains the term “buy once, cry once”.  Bowhunter Chronicles Youtube Channel:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqNW_e4utW64Qu-PXuqSU-Q Huntavore is Powered by Simplecast
