The internet can be a cesspool that promotes the worst of humanity. But? It can also bring people together. Depending on where you hang out and who you hang out with online determines if you've found a supportive group of friends who share your hobbies/etc or a group that will bring you down. At WorldCon 2019's “Building the SFF Community Online” panel, Christopher Davis, Heather Rose Jones, Elio García Jr., fromahkyra, and Kat Tanaka (oh-cop-nick)Okopnik shared tips they use to help the online communities they moderate thrive. =============================== Thanks for listening! Two Excellent Historical Novels Heather's Rereads List for TLR's 55 Rereads Sheena is joined by Heather Rose Jones to discuss the list that was released on TheLesbianReview.com - TLR’s 55 Most Reread Books. In this episode Heather talks about her selection of books. The Covert Captain by Jeannelle M Ferreira Publisher Indie Author Audio Narrated by Violet Dixon Synopsis Nathaniel Fleming, veteran of Waterloo, falls in love with his Major's spinster sister, Harriet. But Nathaniel is not what he seems, and before the wedding, the truth will out... Eleanor Charlotte Fleming, forgotten daughter of a minor baronet, stakes her life on a deception and makes her name—if not her fortune—on the battlefield. Her war at an end, she returns to England as Captain Nathaniel Fleming and wants nothing more than peace, quiet, and the company of horses. Instead, Captain Fleming meets Harriet. Harriet has averted the calamity of matrimony for a decade, cares little for the cut of her gowns, and is really rather clever. Falling in love is not a turn of the cards either of them expected. Harriet accepts Captain Fleming, but will she accept Eleanor? Along the way, there are ballrooms, stillrooms, mollyhouses, society intrigue, and sundering circumstance. Serving as a maid to Eliza Hamilton, and an assistant in the woman's stubborn desire to preserve her late husband's legacy, has driven that point home for Mercy - as did her own previous heartbreaks. When Andromeda Stiel shows up at Hamilton Grange for an interview in her grandfather's stead, Mercy's resolution to live a quiet, pain-free life is tested by the beautiful, flirtatious, and entirely overwhelming dressmaker. Andromeda has staid Mercy reconsidering her worldview, but neither is prepared for love - or for what happens when it's not enough. This is an angsty but fluffy F/F novella with a happy ending for both of our intrepid heroines. Floodtide by Heather Rose Jones Book Clips Welcome to Book Clips, the mini podcast where authors and narrators give you a taste of a book with a short snippet. In this episode we hear an author reading from Floodtide by Heather Rose Jones Synopsis The streets are a perilous place for a young laundry maid dismissed without a character for indecent acts. Roz knew the end of the path for a country girl alone in the city of Rotenek. A desperate escape in the night brings her to the doorstep of Dominique the dressmaker and the hope of a second chance beyond what she could have imagined. Roz’s apprenticeship with the needle, under the patronage of the royal thaumaturgist, wasn’t supposed to include learning magic, but Celeste, the dressmaker’s daughter, draws Roz into the mysterious world of the charm-wives. When floodwaters and fever sweep through the lower city, Celeste’s magical charms could bring hope and healing to the forgotten poor of Rotenek, but only if Roz can claim the help of some unlikely allies. Set in the magical early 19th century world of Alpennia, Floodtide tells an independent tale that interweaves with the adventures. FEEDBACK The Alpennia series by Heather Rose Jones (rec’d by Jen) Outline Your Novel, Structuring Your Novel, and Creating Character Arcs by K. M. Weilan (rec’d by Victoria) QUESTIONS 1. I love when you guys say that a book gave you a case of the “did you knows” — and I love getting them myself! I’m a huge fan of learning new random facts (whether it be in books, movies, or something I read online) and being able to add information to a conversation that someone wouldn’t normally know anything about. I’ve always wanted to be the person in the room that can tell you something about anything! Is there a book that either of you would say that gave you the BIGGEST case of the did you knows? I’m so excited to hear your suggestions. Thanks so much! I love the show

Prepositions, Sexuality, and Gender: Unpacking Our Bundles The Lesbian Historic Motif Podcast - Episode 31d with Heather Rose Jones A really geeky philosophical discussion about the semantics of prepositions across different languages, and how we can use that as a gateway to thinking about different cultural models of sexuality and gender. This is the first part of a two-part series that looks at the complex differences in how gender and sexuality has been understood in different times and places, and what that means for the search for identification and connection with historic figures. In this episode we talk about Thinking of prepositions (and gender/sexuality categories) as bundles of distinct meaning-features that can be combined in different ways in different languages/cultures Picking apart some of the types of meaning-features that are used to build gender and sexuality categories. An example of different ways in which the same bundle of gender/sexuality features might be interpreted based on cultural models and assumptions A transcript of this podcast is available here. Amanda and Jenn discuss books about the arts, kid-friendly audiobooks, Victorian-esque reads, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Book Riot Insiders, Penguin Random House Audio, and Flatiron Books, publishers of Frankie. Questions 1. I love your show! I was really getting into a slump of only reading the highly marketed books. You help me broaden my bookshelf so thanks! My husband and I recently start "reading" books together. He listens to the audio book because he is a busy MA student and drives a lot while I enjoy reading physically. We just finished Bird Box and both really enjoyed it! My husband is the finicky reader. He enjoys Stephen King and thrillers. We have Dark Matter by Blake Crouch on our to read list. I tried recommending Into the Drowning Deep, but the mermaids were too far (even though I think he would love it). We would like recommendations for thrillers/suspense with some supernatural happenings and at least one likeable/smart character. He has read most of Stephen King where as I really enjoy fantasy novels. I can do most horror/suspense. Sci Fi could be doable if it had the right characters. Please stay in the adult category as my husband does not enjoy "teen angst". Side note: I would just need a trigger warning for violence against women and children (which you always provide). Thank you in advance! --Kyla and Kyle 2. I would love ideas for books that are relationship focused but have intellectual conversation, like my favorite movies - Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight. What I love about those is that you feel so much intimacy and tension - the way one tiny thing could make everything fall apart. I have On Chesil Beach on my radar already. Normal People by Sally Rooney also came close to what I'm hoping for. --Jenny 3. Hi Ladies! Love the podcast! I have loved the Dana Stabenow, Kate Shugak mysteries. Though I love her series, I would love a recommendation for a Native American own voices author from Alaska or North Western Canada. I prefer fiction, and it does not have to be a mystery. --Jessie 4. I’m looking for recommendations for my school’s book club. We are a group of high school educators who enjoy reading broadly, so we have tried to have books that delve into different departments’ interests like The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (science) or Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi (History). I would love some book recommendations where the text is heavily influenced by art or music to better represent those departments. Bonus points for diverse authors or perspectives! In the past we have also loved Station Eleven, Enrique’s Journey, The Nightingale, Educated and The Storied Life of AJ Fikry. Thanks in advance for your help! --Sarah 5. Hi! I've recently discovered audio books as an excellent way to get more books in my life on my commute every morning. I drop my kids off at two different places and I'm usually in the car for about an hour. My difficulty is finding something that I enjoy but is also appropriate for my kids to listen to, they are 2 1/2 and 4 but are VERY observant and like to mimic what they hear. So far I've listened to Blackout by Connie Willis and the The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden. I love fantasy, sci-fi, historical fiction, and mystery. Any recommendations you have would be awesome, thank you! --Heather 6. My dad loves traditional sci-fi. Heinlein is his favorite author ever, but he also enjoys Zelazny, Asimov, etc. I'm hoping to find new authors for him, and have had some success with the Expanse, The Martian, and with books by Elizabeth Moon. However, the Vorkosigan books, the Murderbot Diaries, Red Mars, and the Honor Harrington books all fell flat for him. Do you have suggestions for modern books in the classic sci-fi style? --Books for Space Dad 7. Hiii! :) I'm wondering if you know of any books similar to the Victorian "sensation novels" such as Lady Audley's Secret, Wilkie Collins' books etc, but which reflect modern values. I find I'm completely charmed by the trope that I call "mild mannered Victorian gentleman reluctantly and/or accidentally solves a crime," that isn't gritty or over the top but still has a lot of unforseen twists; however, I've grown so tired of books that only have white straight characters. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! --Mild Mannered Modern Reader Books Discussed The Dead Duke, His Secret Wife, and the Missing Corpse by Piu Marie Eatwell Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes (TW: violence against women and children (and everyone)) Stephen King read-alikes episode My Soul to Keep by Tananarive Due (TW: graphic violence, harm to women and children) The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer A Separation by Katie Kitamura Two Old Women by Velma Wallis Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice (rec’d by Jessica and Michelle) Nocturnes by Kazuo Ishiguro Blood, Water, Paint by Joy McCullough (tw: rape) The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal Waypoint Kangaroo by Curtis C. Chen The Impossible Girl by Lydia Kang (rec’d by Jamie C) Daughter of Mystery by Heather Rose Jones (rec’d by Jenn's friend Ellen)

Mother Of Souls by Heather Rose Jones Book Clips Welcome to Book Clips, the mini podcast where authors and narrators give you a taste of a book with a short snippet. In this episode we hear a reading from Mother Of Souls by Heather Rose Jones by the author Synopsis At last! Return to the enchanted realm of Alpennia for the eagerly awaited sequel to Daughter of Mystery and The Mystic Marriage. All her life, Serafina Talarico has searched in vain for a place where she and her mystical talents belong. She never found it in Rome—the city of her birth—where her family’s Ethiopian origins marked them as immigrants. After traveling halfway across Europe to study with Alpennia’s Royal Thaumaturgist, her hopes of finding a home among Margerit Sovitre’s circle of scholars are dashed, for Serafina can perceive, but not evoke, the mystical forces of the Mysteries of the Saints and even Margerit can’t awaken her talents. When Serafina takes lodgings with Luzie Valorin, widowed music teacher and aspiring composer, both their lives are changed forever. Luzie’s music holds a power to rival the Mysteries, and Serafina alone has the vision to guide her talents. For sorcery threatens the fate of Alpennia—indeed of all of Europe—locking the mountains in a malevolent storm meant to change the course of history. Alpennia’s mystic protections are under attack and the key to survival may lie in the unlikeliest of places: Luzie’s ambition to write an opera on the life of the medieval philosopher Tanfrit. 3 Reviewers 1 Book - Daughter Of Mystery by Heather Rose Jones The Lesbian Review Podcast Sheena is joined by April and Tara today to talk about Daughter of Mystery by Heather Rose Jones in this special episode of 3 Reviewers 1 Book. Daughter Of Mystery by Heather Rose Jones Publisher: Bella Books Synopsis Margerit Sovitre did not expect to inherit Baron Saveze’s fortunes—even less his bodyguard, a ruthlessly efficient swordswoman known only as Barbara. Wealth suddenly makes Margerit a highly eligible heiress and buys her the enmity of the new Baron. He had expected to inherit all, and now eyes her fortune with open envy. Barbara proudly served as the old Baron’s duelist but she had expected his death to make her a free woman. Bitterness turns to determination when she finds herself the only force that stands between Margerit and the new Baron’s greed. At first Margerit protests the need for Barbara’s services, but soon she cannot imagine sending Barbara away. And Barbara’s duty has become something far more hazardous to her heart than the point of a sword. But greater dangers loom than one man’s hatred—the Prince of Alpennia is ill. Deadly intrigue surrounds the succession and the rituals of divine power known as The Mysteries of the Saints. Heather Rose Jones debuts with a sweeping story rich in intrigue and the clash of loyalties and love.
