In this episode, we explore the fascinating and controversial Qalandariyya and similar movements like the Haydais & Shams-i Tabrizis. We also dive into the historical development of this movement, from the early Malamatis to the extreme ascetic dervishes in the Ottoman empire.Sources/Recomended Reading: Dahlén, Ashk (2004). We began this evening with page one of the second volume of The Evergetinos. In many ways, we pick up where we left off in the first volume with humility. However, we are given very explicit examples of those who are a model of the virtue. Perhaps it would be better said that they present us with an other-worldly manifestation of the virtue - the Holy Fool. Such individuals, so driven by the love for Christ, have set aside so completely self-esteem and reputation that their presence reveals the poverty, inadequacy or complete lack of this holy virtue in others; especially those who deem themselves to be religious. To hear the stories of their lives almost knocks the wind out of the reader. The very presence of their sanctity brings down upon them the scorn and the abuse of others. They embody Christ's teaching, “You will be hated by all because of my name.” They are hated because they embodied the humility of Christ, who counted reputation as nothing, emptied himself and became a servant, obedient unto death. It is hard to be in the presence of such individuals. Their hidden sanctity will still speak to the souls of those in their midst and provoke a reaction. The demons who guide and direct our thoughts will seek to make us mock and ridicule them and blind us to their true goodness. Thus, they provide us with a cautionary tale – that in our lesser moments we are capable of mocking the Lord in others, when we hold them in contempt. We are not so far from committing such unholy violence in our hearts, when we lose sight of the dignity of those around us. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:04:02 Leilani Nemeroff: Thank you! The fool is one of the most relatable, intriguing and recurring figures in the world. There have been fools who have caused surprise and laughter since time immemorial. We worship folly by seeing it in people and in the world and by willingly displaying it in ourselves. It is one of the timeless archetypes, which we all inherit at birth. Many of us suffer from the absence of the fool in our lives. Frenetic and upright, we take ourselves too seriously. As William Shakespeare said, “All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” Forgetting that playfulness is a basic human need, we wonder why we so easily become bored and exhausted, losing all capacity for spontaneity, authenticity, and passion. The antidote to this would be to give the fool archetype some space in our lives. “The soul demands your folly; not your wisdom.” - Carl Jung ☕ Donate a coffee ⭐ Support on Patreon ━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⌛ Timestamps (0:00) Introduction (2:00) In Praise of Folly (3:45) The Wise Fool (5:15) The Fool as Truth-Teller (6:24) Fool, Clown and Trickster (10:24) The Medieval Court Jester (13:54) The Shakespearean Fool (14:38) Parsifal: The Quest for The Holy Grail (17:47) Don Quixote (20:02) Dostoevsky's The Idiot (22:17) The Fool as Hero (22:54) Ivan The Fool (24:50) The Fool's Journey (Tarot) (27:57) The Number Zero in The Fool (29:32) Symbolic Transformations of The Fool in Tarot (31:42) The Fool: Precursor to Transformation (34:44) The Dark Side of The Fool (36:04) The Fool and the Child Archetype (36:45) The Fool: The Inferior Function (38:08) The Holy Fool

Tonight we continued with St. John's Step on Obedience. We are presented with an image that may be unfamiliar to us. Obedience is not presented as something that is crushing to the human spirit. It can be humiliating - in the sense that it seems to drive out from the soul and the heart all vestige of arrogance, fierceness, and hostility towards others. Yet, what emerges from this exercise of faith is conformity to Christ. When it is rooted in a true love for one's shepherd, one's Elder, then a kind of voluntary innocence begins to emerge; a childlike trust in the Elder that prevents a person from speculating about his motives or thinking that he is being driven by xmalice. When we know that we are being guided by love then we are able to embrace even the most challenging of things. Obedience becomes are very food; something nourishing as it was for Christ himself. When perfected, it can bring about not only personal transformation but the transformation of every relationship that exists within our lives. When we let go of all machinations and all forms of calculation and seek simply to love and give ourselves in love - peace and freedom emerge. We should speak of obedience as something that ultimately brings joy. Indeed, we should see all the virtues as doing exactly that – bringing us into the joy of the kingdom. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:10:10 Art: In case anyone is interested. 00:10:16 Art: Upcoming online course: THE WAY OF THE PILGRIM: Entering Into the Jesus Prayer Instructor: Very Rev. A poor, half-witted girl is sold by her mother to be the assistant of a brutal traveling circus strongman in La Strada ("the road"). Federico Fellini's 1954 masterpiece, included on the Vatican film list in the category of Values, attests to the seeds that can be planted by selfless love, even in the face of abuse and rejection. Condemned by Marxist critics in 1950s Italy for its spiritual view of suffering, the film found a better initial reception in the United States, where viewers saw Giulietta Masina's unforgettable protagonist as a "cross between St. Rita and Mickey Mouse". From the beginning, Catholic viewers have found found much to appreciate - Pope Francis, who was 17 when the film was released, calls it one of his favorites. Ep. 172 is the first of a new series called Sunday Tarot Talk. In this inaugural episode we look at the Fool card and how you can learn to "Carry Your Burdens Lightly." The Fool is a mysterious card that holds much power that you can learn how to harness. It is also a card of contradictions and paradox so open up your mind to the Fool's wisdom. We will look at three ways the Fool can help us to transform our lives. The Fool tells us, "Trust Nothing, trust nonsense and trust no one!" Sounds a little crazy but this is a Holy Fool, so there is hidden meaning in these sayings and we will dive deeply into them. The Pattern on the Trestleboard is introduced and also be sure to listen through until the end to learn HOW THE FOOL CARD CAN HELP YOU TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE. Saint Isidora the Simple was a 4th century nun who lived at the Tabbenisi monastery in Egypt. She is celebrated as the first example of a "Holy Fool"- a Saint whose humble and simple lifestyle attracts the mockery of the world, much like how Christ was mocked in his crucifixion. We contemplate Saint Isidora's life, read scriptures that celebrate this "Christian foolishness", and consider how her example of Christian foolishness inspired Saint Francis and Feodor Dostoevsky, particularly in his character of Prince Myshkin.

Sometimes we think of the religious life as serious and staid. But in every faith and spiritual tradition, there exists a trickster, fool, clown, jester, buffoon, or “simpleton” that disrupts, mocks, pokes fun at, and questions authority—religious and otherwise. The purpose of the “holy fool” is to upend what we think we know, to shatter our perceptions of what is real, and to reveal a deeper truth. Play, playfulness, riddles, and humor are all tools of the “holy fool,” designed to snap us out of our waking slumber, out of our certainty, and into a new understanding of life and ourselves. In this time of environmental collapse, of racial justice uprising, of life altered by a pandemic, what might we learn from the “holy fools” of history, from the “holy fools” of our own time, and how might we embody and practice holy foolishness? I'm back! I never released this episode during the first season because I wasn't ready to talk about all of this. However, my personal backstory with "mental illness" and finding god is an important precursor to the second season, where we're going to delve more into neurodivergence, disability, and ableism. Transcript: https://medium.com/@friendlyanarchism/s1e31-5-the-spiritual-radical-left-burnout-and-disability-with-the-young-quaker-pod-transcript-18fa785d2b5e Show notes: I spoke with Jessica Hubbard-Bailey about being religious in a lefty household, the radical spiritual revival, pain caused by Christianity, the creation of white slaveholder evangelism, finding spirituality and Quakerism, carving out space for spiritual leftists, the benefits of having a person of faith in your affinity group, inner peace as a service to community, burn-out culture, the danger of spreading anxiety and fear, gender-coding of work, our personal stories of disability, productivity as worth, lithium, Jesus' love of the sick, John the Baptist, letting people exist instead of trying to fix you, being held in the light, wheelchairs are freedom, and the social model of disability. 7:05: It gets mentioned a few times throughout the show, so I want to clarify that the idea that the right has "co-opted" Jesus is often used as a cop-out and an excuse folks use to evade holding christianity accountable for all the damage it has done. 9:26: Article removed from Forbes on the destruction of amerikan liberation christianity: https://www.politicalorphans.com/the-article-removed-from-forbes-why-white-evangelicalism-is-so-cruel/ 16:05: I speak lovingly about the Quaker meeting houses in Philadelphia (which are beautiful) but I have since found out were in part built using money from the slavery trade.
