Bonnie McKee chats about co-writing hits with Katy Perry, including "California Gurls" and "Roar," as well as her own artist career that has resulted in successful singles such as "American Girl." PART ONE:Scott and Paul share a little preview of what's to come as they prepare to celebrate Songcraft's 10 anniversaryPART TWOOur in-depth conversation with Bonnie McKeeABOUT BONNIE McKEE:Bonnie McKee grew up as a classically trained singer and pianist, but began pursuing a pop music career while still a teen. In 2004 she released her debut album, Trouble, with Reprise Records, but soon switched her focus to working as a behind-the-scenes songwriter. She has written ten songs that have hit #1 in either the US or UK, and is best known for her work with Katy Perry, which began with the Diamond-certified and international chart-topping album, Teenage Daydream. Bonnie contributed to three songs on the album, all of which became chart-topping singles: “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).” When the deluxe Complete Confection version of the album was released, Bonnie landed two more chart-topping singles with “Part of Me” and “Wide Awake.” She went on to collaborate with Katy Perry on four songs on the follow-up album, Prism, including the Top 20 single “Birthday” and the #1 hit “Roar.” Other successful singles from the Bonnie McKee songbook include “Dynamite” for Taio Cruz, “Hold it Against Me” for Britney Spears, “C'Mon” for Kesha, and the UK chart toppers “How We Do (Party)” by Rita Ora and “I Don't Care” by Cheryl. Additionally, she's written songs for Cher, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, Bebe Rexha, Jason Derulo, Kygo, and Adam Lambert, among others. In 2013, Bonnie reemerged as an artist with the single “American Girl” on Epic Records. She recorded an entire album, but parted ways with the label and it was shelved. Enough tracks and demos leaked online over the years, however, that fans were clamoring for it. Now, more than ten years later, Bonnie has re-recorded the album. She combined the re-recorded tracks with the original release of “American Girl,” which has now been streamed 23 million times on Spotify. The end result is Hot City, an album more than a decade in the making.

Atlanta, the capital of the American South, is at the red-hot core of expansion, inequality, and political relevance. In recent decades, central Atlanta has experienced heavily racialized gentrification while the suburbs have become more diverse, with many affluent suburbs trying to push back against this diversity. Exploring the city's past and future, Red Hot City: Housing, Race, and Exclusion in Twenty-First-Century Atlanta (U California Press, 2022) tracks these racial and economic shifts and the politics and policies that produced them. Dan Immergluck documents the trends that are inverting Atlanta's late-twentieth-century “poor-in-the-core” urban model. New emphasis on capital-driven growth has excluded low-income people and families of color from the city's center, pushing them to distant suburbs far from mass transit, large public hospitals, and other essential services. Revealing critical lessons for leaders, activists, and residents in cities around the world, Immergluck considers how planners and policymakers can reverse recent trends to create more socially equitable cities. PREMIERE: Hot City Orchestra - It's Not Over Yet (feat. Nicolas Engel) [Internet is Over]

Hot City Orchestra deliver the debut album ‘I Almost Danced' via their own Internet Is Over imprint this September, comprising three parts to make up the collective LP which traverses through downtempo, ambient, glitch, dub and more. Hot City Orchestra is the collaborative guise of Arno Volker, label boss of Pressure Traxx and La Peña, and his long-time friend Simon Birkenfeld. In February of 2021 the duo inaugurated this new project and new imprint, Internet Is Over, with their debut EP ‘The Planet'. This material found the duo utilising modular synthesis and field recordings, taking inspiration from both nature and city life and fusing an amalgamation of influences into something uniquely theirs. Here Hot City Orchestra return once again to showcase more of their idiosyncratic sounds with a debut album. Part one of three from the ‘I Almost Danced' LP is made up of four cuts featuring pianist Nicolas Engel. Our premiere for today, ‘It's Not Over Yet,' embraces an early 2000's IDM aesthetic, laid out across fifteen minutes with a minimalistic rhythm, winding subs, ethereal synth textures and dubbed-out piano licks. https://soundcloud.com/hotcityorchestra https://soundcloud.com/user-157609022-496215843 https://www.instagram.com/hot_city_orchestra/ https://www.instagram.com/internet_is_over/ www.itsdelayed.com www.instagram.com/_itsdelayed_ www.facebook.com/itsdelayed

5...4...3...2...fun!!

sent $$$ this week to Sogorea Te’ Land Trust.sogoreate-landtrust.org“Sogorea Te’ Land Trust is an urban Indigenous women-led land trust based in the San Francisco Bay Area that facilitates the return of Indigenous land to Indigenous people.Through the practices of rematriation, cultural revitalization, and land restoration, Sogorea Te’ calls on native and non-native peoples to heal and transform the legacies of colonization, genocide, and patriarchy and to do the work our ancestors and future generations are calling us to do.We are poised to purchase our first piece of land and a beautiful 3 bedroom, 2 bath house in Huchiun, East Oakland. This house sits directly across the street from another house that is also being Rematriated to Sogorea Te’. Together, these two pieces of land will house Indigenous staff members and their families along with office space and the first Chochenyo Language Institute. They will also be the first two properties we have outright title to. This is a huge step forward in our work of Rematriation, taking this Lisjan land off the speculative market forever and providing long-term, affordable housing for our community. In order to purchase this house, we need to raise $750,000 by August 28th.We know this is a very short timeline. This opportunity came to us when the house was already under contract by another buyer, who decided not to buy it and instead offered the contract to us. Now we have to raise the necessary funds to close escrow. This is a stretch, but with the support of our community, we know anything is possible! Please help us return this Indigenous land to Indigenous hands.”DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun(intro by omar)Noods “Mochi” Noods PleaseIndira Valey “No Me Tengas Miedo No Me” No Me Tengas MiedoTubafresh “Extra Syrup” Extra SyrupPALE RED “River Side” Heavy PettingSwearin’ “Young” Surfing StrangeKarima Walker “Hands in Our Names” Hands in Our NamesBill Baird “You’re Free (if You Want to Be)” GoneStrong Words “Call You Back” let the moon runaway with youSabrina is Not in This Chat “It’s Been a Weird Day” Not Recommended for Sensitive SkinBlank Realm “Speedboat on a River of Blood” Last SeenRiki “Hot City” Hot City Mini-PackStephen Steinbrink “Minor Scrapes” B-sides & Instrumentals 2012 - 2017Turtlenecked “Christmas Songs” High Scores Of The HeartHoly pink “red tastes” meditation hymns for an electronic ageTough Customer “Konner” ROCKGASMDeeper “KG” DeeperPillow Queens “Cuckoo” State of the StateHi My Name Is Ryan “No More Bands” HonestlyThe Widest Smiling Faces “Toothpaste Dreams” Milk GardenOk vancouver ok “the outdoors is a good place for potty” b-sides of influencesPema “Bicker” Bad Habits

This episode is another addition to the sustainability series. The paper discussed here goes over ways to limit and control heat within urban settings. There are many geographic changes that can be made around cities to help reduce the heat radiating from them, however, there are many ways that the heat can be dissipated without geographic changes. Some of these changes could be coming to a city near you. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/epistem/support
