What is the most valuable non-renewable asset in your life and business? It's time. Your time is limited, so why not use it doing what brings you the most satisfaction and joy? Today's guest designed his businesses to let him do just that. Key Takeaways You're not alone in your work. By being part of a community of people in the same profession, you can help and support each other and foster mutual success. As soon as you can, start creating systems to automate as much of your job as possible. Branching out in the type of services you offer is often an inexpensive way to create more security. About Blake Pollino Blake spent ten years doing business development and marketing in the corporate/start-up world. He shot his first wedding for free in December 2017 and filmed his first paid wedding the following March. Blake worked 80+ hours a week building his video business while still working a full-time 9-5. He went full-time almost one year to the day after his first paid wedding. Blake launched BP Media Group in 2019. Since then, he has worked with companies/brands like ConocoPhillips, Shell, the Philadelphia 76ers, Junior Olympics, Texas A&M, Stephen F. Austin University, and more. In late 2019, he spun his real estate photo/video work into its own company, BP Real Estate Photo & Video. Becoming the Boss of Your Own Schedule with Systems As someone who runs multiple businesses, Blake could be constantly at odds with time. However, he learned that money that buys you more time is money well spent. Blake explains how establishing and using automated systems has freed up more time in his business. By having employees and systems in place, Blake is able to own his schedule. Having previously worked over eighty hours a week, you better believe he appreciates his ability to take quality time off for his family and his own passions. Building the Relationships that Pay You Back Over and Over Again One aspect of Blake's success has come from relationships with clients. There are some companies, particularly marketing agencies, that will need video for many different projects and clients. These, in turn, can lead to new work opportunities. We discuss how seeking out and cultivating relationships with just a few companies can greatly multiply your work. A lot has to do with the effort you put into securing clients. By putting your energy into going after big clients, you're being more efficient with your resources. These are often the clients that you can reliably count on for multiple work opportunities. What systems do you have in your business that allow you to own your own time? How do you go antelope hunting instead of mouse hunting? Leave a comment on the episode page! In This Episode: The benefits of being part of a shared experience [6:00] How Blake transitioned out of corporate work and into entrepreneurship [12:10] Taking advantage of automation to buy you more time [17:33] Taking control of your time and schedule to be able to focus on your true priorities [24:40] Why it can be tough to be both a creative and an entrepreneur [33:40] Finding clients who lead you to even more opportunities [35:45] Whether to hunt for field mice or antelopes [41:50] Diversifying your business without buying new gear [43:37] What to do after your success [52:00] Quotes “Some of the moments that have led to the most success in this business have come from going to workshops. It's not necessarily the content that is taught at those workshops, which is normally great; it's the relationships that I've made.” [10:31] “We're in a really cool place where people are starting to see that the ocean is plenty big for everyone. We can really help each other and lift each other up.” [11:19] “There's a big struggle in the creative industry. We're artists. We want to create something and show our art. But, whether we like it or not, we're also business-people. We have to run these businesses. Many struggle to do both these things.” [33:43] Links: Get on the Onward Summit Waitlist! What’s your gut reaction when someone asks you how work is going? If the first thing you feel is dread or anxiety, you need to examine what might be causing you to feel that way. One of the most common reasons we feel constantly overwhelmed or unfulfilled in our career is a lack of alignment or understanding of the value we bring to the table. Favorite Quote: “I'm so proud of the work that my clients have been doing. Because ultimately, they're taking the tools that they're being given and the support they're being given, and they're applying it, and they're getting the results. But it's not just that, it's watching these women recognize that they can get back to that peak of their career when they were confident, they felt like there were no barriers, they were excited and energized and passionate to get up to go to work. And they are in organizations and in roles that align with their natural skills and gifts, and they feel valued in that work. It was March 14, 2020, the office was closed down due to COVID and Patrice, an HR professional, found herself homeschooling her two kids, stressed out to the max. She was searching for how to make the best of the situation and what the right path was for herself because she was tired of feeling emotionally detached from her work and sacrificing her family time. It was then that she made a life-changing decision - one that, in just three short months, challenged everything she believed about what was necessary in order to do the work she was passionate about AND make a great income. On this episode of The Bridge to Fulfillment, Blake and Patrice discuss how Patrice began the process of learning to trust and value herself and what she has to offer, understanding that none of us are alone when we struggle (and how to reach out and find a helping hand), and being okay with the fact that your journey is an amazing work in progress. Tune in for a firsthand look at a life that changed for the better with a few key mindset shifts. You'll Learn Why the COVID quarantine brought about increased introspection, internal struggle and general life reevaluation in a lot of people How Blake and Patrice worked together to get a clear picture of a path forward that was based in value recognition, clarity and alignment What parameters you need to consider to make sure you're prioritizing the things you care about (not to mention your own self) And much more! So, me feeling like I now have a new lease on life in a way like to be able to own my own destiny is incredible to me, it's life changing. To be able to see myself in a light I just wasn't seeing myself before is the biggest life change for me in the last three months. And I'm really proud of it. Because when COVID hit, I wasn't sure. And all of the stressors many people out there are experiencing right now, many of those stressors were overwhelming. And stopping and getting clear about who I am and what I want gave me the confidence to then go and do it.” - Patrice How to get involved To schedule a 15 minute discovery call to see if or how Blake can help you: www.connectionsilluminated.com To get access to free resources, updates & future events, join Blake's newsletter at www.bridge2fulfillment.com You are capable of far more than you can imagine. Sharon Brown’s middle son, Blake, was a perfectly healthy baby until at six months old, he developed a sinus infection and was put on antibiotics. Thanks to old school Western medicine, he pretty much lived on antibiotics for the next 5-6 years, battling chronic sinus infections, ear infections and respiratory infections. When his teacher informed Sharon that Blake likely had Attention Deficit Disorder and would benefit from being on Ritalin, Sharon, a Clinical Nutritionist herself, wondered if maybe he was just unable to focus because he felt so miserable all the time. She decided to take matters into her own hands to stop the downward spiral of conventional medicine. She started to research alternative remedies for inflammation and infection and thus cracked opened the world of gut health. Once she learned about the powerful gut-healing benefits of bone broth, it was a game changer for Blake. In 2011 Sharon and her husband (a chef! lucky lady...) launched Bonafide Provisions with the mission of making traditionally-prepared bone broth available to all those who need it. Blake Morgan is a best-selling author, speaker and futurist who focuses on customer experience. Her new book, The Customer of the Future: Ten Guiding Principles for Winning Tomorrow’s Business, was just released on October 29. Creating great customer experience is critical for organizations looking to get and stay ahead. With all of the technologies we have and use on a daily basis (Netflix, Amazon, Spotify, etc…) as consumers we have come to expect personalized, easy, quick experiences. The problem is so many organizations are not keeping up with technology. Most, if not all, of us have stories about horrible experiences when interacting with insurance companies or cable companies or airlines. Creating great customer experience is intertwined with creating great employee experience, because it is employees who are fulfilled, happy, and engaged who are going to be willing to go above and beyond for the customers. Employees who do not have the resources, tools, and training to do their job correctly are not going to provide great customer experience. Blake shares a story that she heard from an HR executive at Workday, that proves this point completely. There was a salesperson who worked at the company, but he had a very hard time selling the software. The software itself was very hard to sell because it is only replaced every 10 years, but on top of that the salesperson was going through some difficult times personally, which made selling even harder. He had found out his daughter was suffering from an illness and the insurance he had through the company would not cover the medical attention his daughter would need. He approached HR to ask for an exception and surprisingly they were able to change his policy to cover what his daughter needed. He was so grateful and relieved that he had a complete turn around professionally. He became the highest grossing sales person at the company and he started bringing in million dollar deals. Blake says, “What I love about this story is that the head of HR didn't even remember approving this policy change for this young man because it was just so normal to be a human being and do the right thing for the human beings that work for you. And I think most companies, they've become so procedure obsessed, so operations obsessed, so money obsessed that they completely miss the human element, they treat their employees like robots, which is ironic because we're all afraid of being replaced by robots. Well, most companies already treat their employees like robots and their employees treat customers like robots.” Think of how much our customer experience would change if we could start by treating our employees with empathy, compassion, and kindness. “Being a successful business today takes hard work, but if you're just the one who has common sense, if you have integrity, if you have fair business practices, I believe that you can make it based on these old principles of integrity, of a commitment to being better. Jeff Bezos recently said, "I believe that one day Amazon will fail. Amazon will go bankrupt." And that's this humility, this awareness of... His company's own mortality. Like even Amazon could disappear overnight. That keeps him humble. And earning our keep every single day, no matter if it's in our relationships with our family, with our employees, with our customers, it's that humility. All of this could just go away. So every single day we need to try our best and commit to our originally established own vision and not let it lose its luster over time.” What you will learn: How Blake got involved in the customer experience space What is the difference between customer service and customer experience A look at the biggest trend causing organizations to spend more time on customer experience How does employee experience fit in with customer experience Examples of companies who are getting customer experience right A look at the 10 guiding principles in Blake’s new book

Time Stamped Show Notes: 00:50 – Introducing Blake, the founder of The Nonverbal Group, creator of Beyond Tells, and owner of School of Cards 00:55 – He was a psychology professor and now uses that knowledge and data to help people understand the use of tells in the game 01:23 – He started playing poker in his teens and his work now combines his three main passions – poker, nonverbal behavior, and teaching 02:25 – Blake was anti-behavior and anti-tells before, but after Beyond Tells his perspective changed 03:06 – Information on Beyond Tells 03:08 – It is the largest study ever conducted on the behavior of poker players; things like blink rate were recorded 03:55 – They found that the quantitative approach is useless but the qualitative results have been game-changing 04:22 – The poker community has been wrong about how they read tells – the results have found that qualitative patterns tell the most 04:57 – They've designed frameworks and approaches to identify who to watch, when, and how so you can integrate that into your game 05:30 – Video is necessary to analyze spots 05:50 –Blake's “A-ha!” moment – when he realized the data was useful and he had been wrong 06:05 – He was in the office looking at footage and implemented the “grounding theory,” where you code the data without a hypothesis 06:30 – He was watching a specific player and saw correlations between his hand movements and range 06:51 – He started noticing the same thing with other players and live at the table; poker tells can be taught, they aren't just an inherent skill 07:30 – How Blake teaches the skill to students 07:35 – First, students must understand and know the body can give off information, then that can be prioritized into a system 08:00 – They can establish feedback loops for players 09:20 – What you can pick up in a small amount of time 09:35 – Predictive models allow for you to follow a player using common patterns 10:27 – The system allows for you to know, not think, where another player is weak 11:15 – Which players to read 11:30 – It depends on the players, but is still beneficial even if you can only read one player 12:18 – He teaches people to go after certain spots and opportunities so behaviors can define and guide as to when to make certain moves 12:43 – Working with the greatest minds in poker 13:05 – He doesn't want the highest echelons knowing his techniques because he plays with them 14:04 – On his work with Nonverbal Group and the power of perspective 14:35 – He sees a difference between mindset and mental game; he sees mindset as an approach and mental game as on-table optimization 14:50 – You must fix the foundation (mindset) before working on anything else 15:35 – On the game moving fast 15:50 – At the top it moves fast, but most games move slow; there's a media bias and the local card room isn't represented 17:42 – Lower-level players are still not up to date on higher-level information about the game 18:00 – Reading behavior and tells is for a specific kind of player, not just anyone 19:04 – On what Beyond Tells does 19:11 – They focus on live, no-limit Hold ‘Em and have a serious of programs depending on what the player needs, but mechanics need to be established first 20:10 – The course is embedded with his knowledge of psychology 23:36 – A tip for listeners: Pay attention to the hands 23:50 – Pick one or two players and focus on their hands pre-flop; see what they do right before and right after 24:12 – Increase your awareness 25:15 – High-level players want to know timing tells but there are more interesting tells to analyze 26:26 – A final tip for listeners: Embedded concealment strategies make it easier to pay attention to them 27:00 – Blake's plans 27:06 – He's going to Aussie Millions and WSOP 27:28 – He's learning and understanding other player's spots; he's using his own findings to improve his game 3 Key Points The qualitative results Blake has found are game-changing. You must master the foundations of poker before studying behavior and tells. A player's hands tell a lot – pick a player or two and see what their hand say. Someone once said that it takes a village to raise a child. If it’s also true that it takes a village to write a book, one of the most important villagers is the editor. On today’s episode, I talk with a good friend who also happens to be a great editor. He helps us understand how why editors are such an important part of the book-making process, and how to choose the right editor for your next book project. Blake Atwood is an editor, author, and ghostwriter who helps writers tell better stories, choose the right path to publication, and how to best market their words. He is also an instructor for Writing Workshops Dallas, which offers wide-ranging seminars and courses for writers of all kinds by a host of excellent teachers. Many of those are available via live stream. On this episode, you’ll learn about the different types of editing and why each one is important for your book. Blake also shares how to find the right editor, and how to know when it’s time to let go of your book and move on. In addition, Blake turns the tables on me by digging into the reasons I haven’t finished my own book yet! One of the most fascinating parts of this conversation is Blake’s story of how he brought his late uncle’s novel to life. This episode is packed with great stories and nuggets of wisdom from Blake! Blake has generously offered Born to Create podcast listeners a 10% discount on his editing services if you book him before the end of the year. Make sure to get in touch with him if you need an editor for a current or upcoming book. Show Highlights In this episode, you’ll discover: How The Chronicles of Narnia, and a specific teacher, inspired Blake to become a writer. What Blake loves about editing, and how it fulfills him creatively. Different types of editing you will encounter in the publishing process, and why each is important. Blake’s advice for correcting some of the most common mistakes writers make. Blake’s process for finding the right type of editor. How Blake was discovered by Sean McCabe, which led to his work on James Clear’s new book Atomic Habits. How to know when a book is finished and move on to the next project. How Blake finished his uncle’s novel after his uncle passed away. Habits that have helped Blake be more successful. Key Takeaways 1. Editors are a key part of the creative writing process. Editors perform a similar function to a record producer. Their job is to take the raw elements and make something beautiful from it. A good editor is not just a hired gun or a cleanup person (although it can certainly involve cleaning up errors and mistakes). Rather, they are collaborators who can make a good book great. 2. There are three distinct stages in editing. They move from the macro to the micro. First is developmental editing, which is concerned with taking a big picture look at the overall book and its story and/or structure. Second is copyediting, which is concerned with grammar, spelling, and line-by-line corrections. Third is proofreading, which is checking for errors after the book has been formatted for print and digital, since errors can happen in that process. It’s important to understand the different types of editing and what to expect when working with editors. 3. Habits can make or break your success. One theme that you will hear often on this podcast is the importance of good habits. Blake shared how he developed a habit of getting up at 5 a.m., and this habit has served him well. He also talked about getting out of his introvert comfort zone by teaching and public speaking, reading 50 pages a day, and quitting books that don’t hold his interest.- Resources BlakeAtwood.com The Father Effect by John Finch with Blake Atwood Don’t Fear the Reaper: Why Every Author Needs an Editor by Blake Atwood The Gospel According to Breaking Bad by Blake Atwood Sins of the Five Fathers by James H. The time has come for us to officially wrap up this season of the Motivational Millennial podcast. In this special finale episode, we talk about how we’ve grown this past season; with an eye towards how we can help other people through their own growth process, of course. In the Motivational Millennial season two finale, we’ll discuss the importance of remembering that our sacrifices are a choice we’ve made and not something people force upon us, how taking ownership of our choices can empower us to feel happier and less anxious, the long-term benefits that come from investing in your personal growth and development, and so much more! What you’ll hear in this episode: How Blake learned he doesn’t always have to lose for others around him to win The importance of remembering our sacrifices are a choice The ways Blake’s life has changed since realizing he doesn’t have to sacrifice to make others happy How Ivy learned to take ownership of her decisions What if the story we tell ourselves about our lives isn’t entirely accurate? The long-term benefits that come from investing in your personal growth and development The profound impact Blake and Ivy’s hairstyle changes this season have had on them What playing a video game helped Ivy realize about her own growth mindset Why Blake and Ivy refuse to be pessimistic about the possibility for people to transform their lives Follow Us On: Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube
In this episode, we reflect on our conversation with Daniela Plattner; a leadership coach and the Founder of The Future of Feminine. The two main themes of that conversation were intuition and purpose, so that’s what we’re diving more into today. One of us even reveals how Daniela’s formula for combining your pain with your passion to create your purpose inspired a complete shift in our business. Enjoy! What you’ll hear in this episode: Blake’s take on Daniela’s actions of actively cultivating intuition Examples in Blake’s life where his intuition kicked in How Blake and Ivy tap into their intuition and recognize it’s speaking to them Why it’s not all or nothing when it comes to using intuition to guide our decisions Ivy’s thoughts on how intuition is a conduit to a deeper knowledge and understanding The difference between emotion and intuition How meditation, prayer, and nature help us tap into our intuition How Daniela’s perspective of combining your pain and passion to create your purpose helped Ivy through a difficult time in her coaching practice Follow Us On: Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube
In this inspired conversation, we reflect on our chat with QuHarrison Terry, who is a serial entrepreneur that was recently named one of LinkedIn’s Top Voices in Technology. QuHarrison’s interview was one of our most scientific interviews to date and we’re continuing that theme today by giving our thoughts on Transhumanism, our quest for perfection, the importance of making mistakes, and how technology is potentially hindering our personal growth as human beings. Enjoy! What you’ll hear in this episode: The drastic difference in Blake and Ivy’s takeaways from their conversation with QuHarrison What is Transhumanism? Are our smart phones actually helping us? If you aren’t making mistakes, you aren’t making anything How Blake and Ivy overcome reflexive fear How technology physically rewires our brains The importance of occasionally getting out of your habit loop Follow Us On: Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube
Last week, we had the pleasure of speaking with Marc Guberti; who has written over 18 books and is the host of the Breakthrough Success Podcast where he’s had guests like Seth Godin, Neil Patel, and Ray Edwards. It was while he was speaking about some of his most successful guests and how they all have systems in place, that our interests were particularly piqued. It was a great reminder of how important systems are, not only in business, but also in our general lives. It’s that concept of having internal and external systems in place that we’re diving more into today. Enjoy! What you’ll hear in this episode: Blake dispels the myth that you must wear hard work like a badge of honor to be successful The irony of saying you don’t have time to put systems in place The importance of realizing you deserve to be supported Ivy’s takeaway from Marc’s interview about a book that is sexist but also powerful in a positive way Why we shouldn’t just focus on external forms of support How “acting as if” can help you manifest what you truly want The mindset you must have to be adaptable and successful How we constantly set ourselves up for failure The road trip that caused Ivy to change how she goes through life How Blake’s productivity has increased 50% since he gave up his to-do list Follow Us On: Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube
In last week’s episode, we spoke with Caleb Arring and Matthew VanHorn who are successful business mentors for LGBTQ entrepreneurs. During that conversation we talked about the medical scare that completely changed their perspective on their career paths, the unique challenges LGBTQ entrepreneurs face when starting and growing a business, why entrepreneurs should switch to outcome-based planning instead of to-do lists, and more. While talking with Caleb and Matthew we were particularly fascinated with how they were able to change their perspectives and see a direct result in their business. So often we convince ourselves we’re not capable of accomplishing the things we want when there’s actually nothing stopping us but ourselves. In this episode, we’re going to dig a little deeper into this topic. What you’ll here in this episode: Ivy’s biggest takeaway from their interview with Caleb Arring and Matthew VanHorn Blake’s biggest takeaway from the interview Using gratitude to switch to a “now that” perspective instead of an “if-then” perspective The difference between Blake and Ivy’s views on life purpose How Blake used gratitude to get through his CrossFit class Follow Us On: Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube
Unschooling is more about self-directed learning, finding out what you’re interested in, and going really deep into something. In this episode of Nat Chat, I’m joined by Blake Boles. While in college, Blake stumbled upon a book that really opened his eyes to the world of unschooling, alternative education, and how students could be learning better outside of the traditional systems. Shortly after graduating, he worked in California doing outdoor education and then ran off to South America for three months, where he decided he wanted to work within the alternative education field while also traveling. He then started Unschool Adventures, where he takes students on two-month trips to interesting places around the world. Blake is an excellent guy to follow if you’re into the alternative education and unschooling movement, as well as the digital nomad space. We covered a wide range of topics, including: Alternative educational systems The unschooling movement and its goals Finding the motivation to leave the traditional school system Fixing the existing school systems The importance of self-directed learning Turning your passions into a career And much more. Please enjoy, and reach out to Blake on his website! If you enjoyed this episode and the bits on turning your passion into a career, you’ll like my episode with Tasha Meys, where we talk about that and more. Blake Calhoun isn't a celebrity director, he's not a health & wellness expert, and he's not going to drop any giant knowledge-bombs on you in this episode. He's just a hard-working filmmaker and editor doing his best to raise two kids and create cool stuff in the process. Through virtually no effort whatsoever, Blake has lost over 30 pounds (and kept it off in the last year), eradicated himself from a daily soda & junk food habit, and has the energy left after a long day to spend time with his family. If that doesn't make you a superhero in the film industry, I don't know what does. By simply following a few of the steps we talk about in this episode, you can completely change your life for the long term as Blake did, and you can do it one small step at a time.
