He instead followed this progression much like "water flows across a floor". Ajey is extremely pleased with how Indonesia's engineering community has evolved since his involvement in the region began many years ago. Not only does it more aggressively embrace new technologies, but the community is now much more "self-organising and self-governing."

In Part III of this eight-part series on rural higher education and workforce development, produced in collaboration with and underwritten by Ascendium Education Group, Michelle chats with John Fitzsimmons, president of The Foundation for Maine's Community Colleges; David Daigler.  president of the Maine Community College System; Justin Archer Burch., national director of Workforce Development at Rural LISC; and Francie Genz, co-principal of the Institute for Networked Communities. Fitzsimmons describes the five basic components of the Foundation's groundbreaking remote work program: skills training for jobs that can be performed remotely, certificates in the essential skills to be an effective remote worker, a certificate in leading a team remotely, a digital resource library, and a three-credit course in remote work. According to Fitzsimmons, there will come a day when a course in remote work will be an essential component of many academic business programs. About 95 percent of Maine is rural, notes Daigler, and these rural communities have unique challenges in engaging in college life. So it's important to bring job opportunities directly to rural residents, according to Daigler. Burch discusses how Rural Works addresses equity issues.  including poverty, and the importance of forming a national intermediary to aggregate the initiatives of  major foundations in the rural space and to enable rural resident to “live in place.” Genz explains how her organization brings businesses together from the same industry sector to collaborate with community leaders in making their industry more competitive and building stronger connections between people and jobs. The goal is to create a table where public and private sectors can work effectively together, building stronger regional economies and helping more people get good jobs where they live.  This episode and the entire series on rural higher education and workforce development is sponsored by Ascendium Education Group, a nonprofit organization committed to helping learners from low-income backgrounds reach their educational and career goals. For more information, visit ascendiumphilanthropy.org

In Part III of a four-part series on rural hospitals, produced in collaboration with and underwritten by the Center for Optimizing Rural Health (CORH), Michelle chats with Dr. Nancy Dickey, CORH's Executive Director and Jon Raines, President & Chief Operating Officer and Managing Partner at Carrus Healthcare, which includes Atoka Medical Center in Oklahoma. CORH selects 30 hospitals for the HRSA-funded Vulnerable Rural Hospital Assistance Program. Those chosen for this free program, whose application period closes July 31, will have access to CORH's team of rural health experts and receive technical support. CORH is working hard to establish depth in hospital leadership. Carrus Atoka is a 25-bed critical access hospital whose goal is to make health accessible and affordable. The keys to success for these kinds of facilities is top-notch leadership and community support, according to Dickey.  CORH provides crucial education in this space, notes Raines. Small hospitals have many challenges because of their size but they also have the opportunity to make things better for both the patients and the community, he adds. COVID taught us that smaller, rural hospitals had the capacity to deal with more acutely ill patients, asserts Dickey, and in the post-COVID era, we should capitalize on this capacity, create a new payment structure, and realize the dangers in closing local hospitals. “Rural hospitals truly save lives,” concludes Raines. In Part III of this three-part series on Reimagining Rural Policy, produced in collaboration with and underwritten by the Brookings Institution, Michelle talks with Cheryal Hills, Executive Director of Region Five Development Commission, who has developed dozens of relationships that have secured investments to address critical issues in the rural communities of Central Minnesota and Rob Riley, president of the Northern Forest Center, who has guided the Center to become the respected regional innovation and investment partner it is today. Capacity building involve planning, learning, and adjustment and is a mix of practical application and theory, according to Hills. She describes a fascinating example of how Region Five drove a value-added regional food hub with Sprout, including serving as its fiscal host, co-authoring grants, providing business training and one-on-one technical assistance to food co-ops, co-sponsoring health and wellness mental health workshops to decrease suicide rates, helping to develop microloans, constructing a 10,000 square foot process facility, starting a mobile market, launching a winter indoor farmer’s market with food and art, and providing community supported agriculture shares (CSAs) to low-income veterans  and those in opioid recovery programs. Capacity building is the ability to be nimble in getting  things done, says Riley, and one of the challenges is identifying resources for stakeholders and enabling local communities and residents to build their own capacity in the forest economy in four Northern Forest states of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Regional collaboration is key in this area, explains Riley, and that involves connecting people who are otherwise working in isolation to expand broadband capabilities and broader markets, for example, that enables local projects to be scaled.  Hills discusses how EDA could channel funds to distressed rural areas, which could include not just employment and poverty rates but population decline and health outcome data, and develop creative programs for nonprofits and Native American tribes that  reduce match barriers. EDA can support local programs that better position rural areas to access the 25 percent set-aside to build on recreational and tourism opportunities, says Riley. The guests end the episode emphasizing the capabilities of the proposed Rural Partnership Program to be complementary with existing programs and what the future “could be” as opposed to “will be.” This episode and the entire three-part series are sponsored by the Brookings Institution, www.brookings.edu.

By Steven Shafer in Flint, MI - February 13, 2021 - In Part III on the Life of Abraham, we will look at his life after he departed Haran at age 75. We will look at both his success and his failures or shortcomings. We will see that his calling and journey of growing in faith, in many ways, parallels our journey. First, we will define what the word "formative" means and why that is vitally important to understand. We have all been shaped by our formative years. The choices and decisions we make during those years will normally determine how successful our life will be. Only for all of us, those years occurred at a much younger age than they did in the case of Abraham. We will also look at an amazing unconditional three-fold covenant promise God made to Abraham at the beginning of his formative years. A covenant promise that God kept in spite of Abraham's shortcomings - a covenant promise that is the reason Great Britain and the United States of America became the two greatest nations on the face of the earth in the time leading up to Christ's return.

Winner the 2019 NAAP Gradiva Award and Co- Winner of International Association for Jungian Studies Awards Program for Best Books published in 2019, Marian Dunlea's BodyDreaming in the Treatment of Developmental Trauma: An Embodied Therapeutic Approach (Routledge, 2019) provides a theoretical and practical guide for working with early developmental trauma. This interdisciplinary approach explores the interconnection of body, mind and psyche, offering a masterful tool for restoring balance and healing developmental trauma. BodyDreaming is a somatically focused therapeutic method, drawing on the findings of neuroscience, analytical psychology, attachment theory and trauma therapy.  In Part I, Dunlea defines BodyDreaming and its origins, placing it in the context of a dysregulated contemporary world. Part II explains how the brain works in relation to the Body Dreaming approach: providing an accessible outline of neuroscientific theory, structures and neuroanatomy in attunement, affect regulation, attachment patterns, transference and countertransference, and the resolution of trauma throughout the body. In Part III, through detailed transcripts from sessions with clients, Dunlea demonstrates the positive impact of Body Dreaming on attachment patterns and developmental trauma. This somatic approach complements and enhances psychobiological, developmental and psychoanalytic interventions. Body Dreaming restores balance to a dysregulated psyche and nervous system that activates our innate capacity for healing, changing our default response of “fight, flight or freeze” and creating new neural pathways. Dunlea's emphasis on attunement to build a restorative relationship with the sensing body creates a core sense of self, providing a secure base for healing developmental trauma.  Marian Dunlea M.Sc., IAAP, ICP, is a Jungian analyst and somatics practitioner who has been leading workshops internationally for the past 25 years integrating body, mind and soul. This podcast presents the third segment of our four-part series ‘Beethoven Variations: A Poet’s Journey through the Music and Life of Beethoven’ with renowned British poet Ruth Padel and eminent pianist Karl Lutchmayer. This series has been put together by Prateeti Punja Ballal. In Part III of the series, titled ‘The Essence of Romanticism’, poet Ruth Padel and pianist Karl Lutchmayer take us through the time when Beethoven is thirty-five, and Napoleon’s army captures and occupies Vienna and its Empire. Along with his anguish in this time of war, he keeps losing chances of love. Through it all, he continues writing works that will live forever, such as the Fifth Symphony, after which this episode gets its title. In this four-part series, Ruth Padel takes us on an intimate journey through Beethoven’s life and music, illustrated by her poetry from her recent book. Professor of Poetry at King’s College London, she has written many collections of poetry, and books of non-fiction and fiction. Her earlier book Darwin: A Life in Poems, released on Darwin’s centenary, captured her great great grandfather memorably. Concert pianist and lecturer, Karl Lutchmayer held an academic lectureship at the Trinity College of Music in London, now Trinity Laban, for fifteen years. He has played at all the major London concert halls and across the world, and his London lecture-recital series, Conversational Concerts, garnered critical and public acclaim. Karl performs Beethoven’s music for us and gives us his insights into its composition and context. Ruth and Karl are joined, for the Fifth Symphony, by guest artists from the South Asian Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra’s founder-trustee, Ambassador Nirupama Menon Rao. The Orchestra is a peace-building initiative made up of musicians from the countries of South Asia and the South Asian diaspora.

In Part III of this compelling conversation, Melissa Doman, M.A. takes the time to examine the hidden roadblocks between individuals and the mental health resources that people often require to function at their best each day. Deconstructing the stigma that can surround mental health initiatives in the workplace is central to ensuring these programs are properly implemented, and more importantly, appeal to those who can most benefit from them.[0:34] The Mind as a MachineThe ongoing crisis has highlighted the fact that personal fulfillment and professional success are intertwined at a more fundamental level than commonly understood in the corporate world. While it is possible to work around, for example, depression or ADHD in much the same way one would compensate for a chronic disease, the undeniable fact is that people function best under ideal conditions, and this requires taking the whole person into account.[3:05] Modeling the ProcessNaturally, the wellness of an organization and the people that push it forward starts at the top, with leadership and management. An environment of openness can make your team members feel more secure in addressing their own issues, and so it is important to approach any mental health initiatives undertaken by your organization with a sense of engagement and authenticity. In many cases, team leaders speaking candidly about their own struggles with everyday challenges can humanize them, deepening the connection with the team.[4:35] The Stakes of Mental HealthFostering an environment that champions the wellness of the whole person is not just a profitable initiative, but one that could seal your competitive edge by guaranteeing the investment of key players on your team. There’s the business case, and the human-to-human case. When individuals in your organization feel free to address issues that limit their ability to function at the highest level, they make more enduring commitments both to the process and themselves. For these reasons, any successful group dynamic must account for the mental health of those involved. [7:41] Opportunity vs. ObligationNo matter how well considered an initiative may be, its chances of success are minimal to nonexistent if the people it is intended to serve do not immediately perceive the benefit. Cornering your team members and demanding they share personal information is not only an unsustainable approach, but will likely drive your most vulnerable team members further into isolation. In order to create the best possible outcomes for your organization, your mental health program should be designed as a resource, never a requirement.[10:33] Mental Health as the FoundationDuring the day to day grind at a thriving company, it can sometimes be easy to forget that the capable and tireless people powering your organization are not at their best every day, and that’s ok. We all have days where the demands of being human overwhelm our professional drive, and accounting for the fact that your people are people is indispensable to any wellness-focused strategy. Options such as built-in mental health days and a culture centered on feeling your best to perform your best will usually create teams that are happier at work.[14:00] A Common ConcernThe most important thing for individuals that may be struggling with mental health concerns is to remember that they are far from alone. Mental illness is nothing to feel guilty or ashamed about...just as the body can be injured through no fault of one's own, billions among our current population will experience some form of mental health concern at some point during their lives. This means that individuals must be just as proactive about seeking out resources and care for these afflictions as organizations must be about providing them...in the words of Cincinnati´s former mayor, ¨take care of yourselves, and each other.¨ About Melissa Doman, M.A.

Ohle discusses how the role of rural and small communities has evolved in the last decade through increased engagement in local, state, and federal elections because these voters often feel ignored when it comes public policy. Broadband accessibility, telehealth, and access to water are major policy issues for rural and small communities, according to Ohle.  Cassling says that there is broad agreement on topline issues among both Democrats and Republican rural voters in terms of increased funding and improving access to health care. In addition, she says, according to a recent poll her organization conducted, three of five voters say they would be more likely to vote for the candidate who would address rural health care issues. COVID-19 now is affecting more rural communities in terms of per capita deaths, and rural voters will want hospital infrastructure improvement, access, and services, she adds. This episode also includes incisive discussion on the policies that President Trump and former Vice President Biden are touting in terms of rural health care and perceptions of the urban-rural divide in the political environment.
