Chris and Xuan join the pod to discuss artistic serendipity, co-writing, unexpected choices, and how recording choices inform genre. Veronicavon, the brainchild of songwriters Chris Hackman (Human Barbie) and Xuan Nguyen (Xuan), emerged in 2020 with a (secret) mission to explore uncharted horizons in lo-fi pop. Their universe of grainy synths, cassette-drenched drums, and warbling guitars, complemented by Nguyen's enchanting vocals, creates a wistful, playful, and instantly addictive dreamscape. Flood Magazine dubbed them "casually devastating," and their hypnotic bedroom aesthetic quickly garnered a passionate audience, with over 500k streams on Spotify in their first year. They've been featured on editorial playlists like ‘Fresh Finds', ‘Borderless', and ‘Fuzzy'. Keep a close eye on this duo, as they follow in the footsteps of alt-pop icons Men I Trust, Alvvays, and Japanese Breakfast. Human Barbie, an analog fantasy formed in 2018 by songwriter Christopher Leopold, weaves wistful pop, shoegaze, and psychedelia into a melancholy glowscape. Their debut album ‘Get a Life' (Poor Man Records, 2020) explores personal heartbreak through psychedelic pop, meticulously recorded on vintage equipment. ‘Get a Life' received acclaim from fans and critics, featuring in Brooklyn Vegan, BIRP!, Indie Shuffle, KCRW, Buzzbands.la, and Spotify playlists like Undercurrents, IRL ANGEL, and Fresh Finds. The album was a top seller on Bandcamp, with songs used in commercials, including a Facebook radio ad and DISCO's 2022 SXSW mixtape. Inspired by its success, Leopold crafted the patient and expansive EP ‘no worries' in a Baltimore warehouse, channeling 90's-era shoegaze nostalgia. Starting as the musical brainchild of Jann Wenner and Ralph Gleason in 1967, Rolling Stone magazine turned into a movement and paragon of music journalism history. Entrusting readers with in depth music reviews and interviews. Folk heroes like Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, martyrs like John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix, and saints like Lester Bangs, and Hunter S. Thompson made the pages of the Rolling Stone the center of the musical and cultural universe. What happens to music journalism once the written word turned to digital? We wanted to know. To learn more we spoke to Jason Grishkoff, blogger and creator at Indie Shuffle and SubmitHub, David Harris, editor in chief at Spectrum Culture. THIRD EDITION of How to Make It in the New Music Business here: https://book.aristake.comJason Grishkoff started a music blog called Indie Shuffle back in 2007, when music blogs were still cool. After a 3-year stint at Google, he was lucky to take the blog full-time in 2013. It was great to have Jason Grishkoff back on the podcast this week. The last time we talked, (April 2020) the world was just learning about Zoom, which opened me up to the possibility of interviewing people not just outside of my room, but on the other side of the world. Jason, who resides in South Africa, founded Indie Shuffle about 15 years ago as an avid music fan. He used his knowledge as a coder and web developer to create his own easy-to-use blog site. At its peak, (2013) Indie Shuffle was getting 6 million listens per month and churning out nearly 10 music reviews per day. Several years later, Jason started SubmitHub as a solution to a problem that he and other bloggers, as well as artists were experiencing... how to sift through gillions of emails per day! Artists were releasing songs and sending stock pitch emails to any blog they could find, while bloggers simply couldn't respond to 300 emails every day. SubmitHub looked to solve the problem by providing a platform where artists could submit their music, and bloggers could easily sift through and say "yes" or "no" to who they wanted to cover. When an artist submits their song on SubmitHub, they answer a few questions to help pair them with the best fitting curators for their music. That way, artists don't just send out a stock email to everyone. That doesn't do anyone any good. As an added incentive for the curators to listen to music they may not have heard about, artists pay a small fee (usually about $1-$2) per submission to the curator for consideration. However, if the curator doesn't respond within 48 hours, the artist gets their money back. This creates a quick, easy transaction between like-minded musicians and influencers. As we well know, the industry has changed significantly over the years, and it's not all about blogs anymore. SubmitHub also lets the artist pick if they are interested in pitching to curators (which includes Music bloggers, Spotify playlisters, YouTube channels and more), social media influencers (on TikTok and Instagram), or record labels. (And with social media influencers, if they don't share your song, you get your money back. They only get paid that small fee if they actually share  your song). There are a few holdouts from bigger blogs such as Pigeons and Planes, Pitchfork, and Stereogum, but for the most part, bloggers, influencers, and curators in general all use SubmitHub to find new music. During our conversation today, we discussed some of SubmitHub's new features. We also talk about some of the new competitors that have popped up in the last couple of years such as MusoSoup, Groover, and HumanHuman. **NOTE that this is Jason's second time on Middle Class Rock Star. Back on episode 37 (which aired May 7, 2020) I shared my screen with Jason and we actually submitted one of my songs to SubmitHub. If you're an artist who is curious about how SubmitHub works, click on the YouTube link just below this, and you can watch Jason walk me through how to use the website's tools most effectively to submit a song.** HOW TO USE SUBMITHUB: https://youtu.be/lmFUeXhsnco?t=2692 If you enjoy the podcast, please let others know, subscribe or write a review. 5 star ratings and reviews on Apple Music as well as subscribing to my YouTube Channel help out the most! Join your host Greg Howard Jr as he gets to the heart of what makes a musician tick with SEA GLASS!!!Sea Glass is the project of New York-based producer Jake Muskat. Inspired to release music after the birth of his first child, Sea Glass's music taps into universal emotions around growing up and dreaming. His sound invokes yearning, hope and nostalgia filtered through a positive lens.Coming back into the scene with his new single “(i have jokes) If You Wanna Hear One” in collaboration with euphoric artist Benét, an exceptional trans talent from Richmond, Virginia, the duo unite ethereal melodies and flowing narratives into a sound of their own. Finding its origins on a simple, classical guitar, this new single was written the week Sea Glass's son was born as a lullabye. He shares, “I liked the idea so much I decided to record it, but wanted to make it fit my production style. As I worked on it, I was more excited by its progress than anything else at the time. It took me 6 months of searching for a good top line when Benét offered to write on it. Their playful melody and lyrics just smashed the demo death loop I was in into smithereens. It came together very quickly from there. I had my close friend Jared Saltiel add live drums and the whole thing gelled together perfectly.”Developing into a soundscape that perfectly encases the warmth and emotive catharsis that Sea Glass continues to showcase exponentially across his repertoire, “(i have jokes) If You Wanna Hear One” comes to life. Enveloping listeners with radiating harmonies, funky rhythms and rich soundscapes, this new single weaves elements of hope, optimism and escapism. Written during Sea Glass's last few months in Brooklyn as he prepared to depart the city, he confides, "My son was just born and I was both thrilled to have this new love in our family but also overwhelmed with the added pressure that the responsibility brought. The music was a sort of escape from the moment, an idealized version of how I hoped things would go. It was written in the summer and there are definitely island vibes to the sounds, but the escapism I'm exploring in the music also makes this song relevant for any time of year.”Sea Glass has been praised by the likes of Indie Shuffle, Wonderland Magazine, WFUV, Record of the Day, Variance Magazine, The Wild Honey Pie among others. Garnering over 250k streams on his last EP alone, he was interviewed on WFUV as a recipient of the Silver Sun Foundation Artists Residency in Woodstock, NY. He spent his time there working on his debut LP due out spring 2023. Needless to say, with a growing presence and more collaborations on the horizon, Sea Glass is set to have an impressive year!Seaglass on InstagramFacebookTikTokBandcampSUPPORT THIS SHOW

f you think that you may recognize Liam St. John from last season 19 of The Voice, Team Gwen, you are correct. Similar to “The Butterfly Effect,” a phenomenon wherein a small change in starting conditions can lead to vastly different outcomes, so did Liam's talents on The Voice cause a small rift in Gwen Stefani & Blake Shelton's perfect relationship:
They both found themselves fighting over the same artist.
(Don't worry. They have since made up.)
Blake Shelton found himself admiring and even becoming a little jealous of Liam's falsetto, and his uninhibited soulful screams.
Spoiler alert: And so will you.
Making yet another great career move, Liam chose Gwen Stafani as his Coach. Gwen described Liam's voice as “incredible” and “rich.”
It takes a lot of hard work and hustle to make it in the music business.
And no one has hustled more than Liam St. John.  He has been in the trenches outside the Rock & Roll castle for years, paying his dues playing at open mics, empty dive bars, and as he says sometimes “making nothing except the occasional well-whiskey or slice of pizza.”
But this story has a happy ending, or should I say, a happy beginning for our young blues-rock singer, and songwriter: For his band finally broke through with an opportunity to open for the British soul-rock sensation, Jacob Banks.
Critics and fans often describe Liam's vocals with words like “smoky, rugged, and classic” and describe him as a “vocal powerhouse.”
They compare his confident swagger to a “seasoned performer, with the passion of a gritty blues singer.”
Indie Shuffle, declares, “the singer's bluesy, raspy vocals are always commanding.”
Soul-pop star Meghan Trainor describes Liam as “incredible”
Gwen Stefani defines him as “charismatic”  Kelly Clarkson praises Liam's stage presence saying, “you are so intense” https://liamstjohn.com Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/mrliamstjohn/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/MrLiamStJohn YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/LiamStJohnOfficial

Today we have Kolby Knickerbocker on the show. Shay & Kolby discuss his new EP Over and Over.  Kolby hails from Bend, Oregon in the United States where he creates incredibly soulful folk music filled with tributes to community, his family & his experiences. FOR RELEASE February 10, 2021 BEND, OREGON (January 25, 2021) - Kolby Knickerbocker announces the release of the single “Over and Over” on February 10. A modern take on the 50's doowop of Otis Redding and Ben King, the song is dedicated to his wife as a reminder that his love will not waiver. Mixed by Sean Moffitt (Mat Kearney, Josh Groban, Ingrid Michaelson), it's the title track off the upcoming mixed EP due out April 2. Commitment. Stability. Love. A testament that no matter how difficult it gets, no matter how strong the emotion, no matter the challenge, he'll always be there. That's the message Knickerbocker wanted to send to his wife in the song, “Over and Over.” To reinforce the message, he recorded 15 separate vocal parts to recreate a gospel choir effect. The result is intimate, raw, and powerful. Knickerbocker says, “This song is very special to me as I think of my daughter and son when I hear the lyrics. Knowing that they will one day feel the emotion that I have for their mother, my wife, and knowing that they will one day be able to really hear the dedication that we had as a couple is very personal and special to me.” While the title track is about coming back to love and relationship “Over and Over,” the EP's title has a double meaning behind it. The EP is a nod to Knickerbocker's feelings about being a musician. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Edwin Raphael over Zoom video! Edwin Raphael shares his new single “Time to Sink” off his forthcoming EP Staring at Ceilings due out February 26th via Dine Alone Records. The track begins softly, advanced by layered textures of peaceful vocals, sharp horns, refined guitars, and crisp drums. “Time to Sink” embraces stillness even when life continues to shift back and forth with light. In December, Edwin Raphael shared his single "Sea of Things" accompanied by its music video. On “Sea of Things” Edwin gives off Jeff Buckley vibes by bearing the same soulful intensity. It's a gorgeous, striking piece of work attributed to Edwin’s innate talents and sheer efficiency with instrumentation. On the narrative front, “Sea of Things” is an ode to existence and dissociation catalyzed by anxiety. “Sea of Things” is a testament to the chaotic and often times, perplexing nature of the ocean and of living without control. This past fall, Edwin released his first single off the EP “Mild Sanity (feat. Juletta).” Deeply absorbing and incredibly cathartic all at once, Edwin’s languid vocals and atmospheric melodies take listeners’ minds outside the cruelties of the world’s relentless wreckage. “Mild Sanity” is also elevated by NYC pop singer-songwriter Juletta’s ethereal cadence. The track was lauded by Under The Radar, American Songwriter, EARMILK, Culture Collide, Indie Shuffle, and was included on Spotify’s Folk & Friends playlist and NPR’s New Music Friday playlist.Staring at Ceilings is a 5-song EP produced with Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire, The National, Local Natives) that reflects the spectrum of human indulgence and the cost of our anxieties.More Info:“You can't win if you don't play” is a quote that lives within singer-songwriter Edwin Raphael. Ditching a career path carved out by his father, Edwin is headstrong on finding his own way in a world no longer concerned with archaic traditions. The 25-year-old artist, living in Montreal, Canada, uprooted from Dubai, creates music instilled with spiraling emotion, which resonates on both the shattered and enriching moments in life.Edwin released his debut LP Will You Think of Me Later? in 2019. Prior to that, he released a pair of EPs—Ocean Walk in 2015 and Cold Nights in 2017. With over 14M+ cumulative streams spanning ~175,000 monthly listeners, he’s been featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday Canada, indie pop & chill, Indie Chillout, Lush + Ethereal, Chill Singer-Songwriter, and Folk Favourites playlists. We want to hear from you! Show Notes: edmprod.com/145 This week, Jason Grishkoff sat down to chat on the EDMProdcast. Jason Grishkoff is the founder of the popular music blog Indie Shuffle, as well as the music submission site SubmitHub. We start off with Jason's background, discussing his progression from semi-pro Counter Strike player to indie music blogger. We dive into how he turned his passion for sharing music with friends into his blog Indie Shuffle, and how he grew the blog while working a 9-5. We discuss the two pivotal shifts by Google and Facebook that killed music blog traffic, and why he feels blogs still have large influence in the music industry in 2020. Later on, we discuss how Jason turned a nagging submission management problem for Indie Shuffle into his music submission site, SubmitHub. Jason offers advice on how to make the most out of SubmitHub, discussing how to maximize your submission approvals and an easy way to earn free premium credits. On the marketing side, Jason dissects what an indie marketing campaign should look like in 2020. He discusses why Spotify playlists aren't as important as everyone thinks, and where he feels your time is better to grow your project. He also discusses how to approach and deal with rejection as an artist, and why all creatives should be reading more fiction novels. Jason is a South African / American entrepreneur and music lover. He founded his own music blog Indieshuffle and later SubmitHub, a platform connecting bloggers and playlist curators directly with artists and labels. His persistence led him to eventually be able to make his passion for music a full time business, while providing value to the music and media community. After years of running a music blog and reviewing releases, events, concerts as a side hustle, while working a normal 9-5 job, Jason landed a ‘big deal’ with a media company that helped him build a team of developers to scale the platform. Unfortunately, life went sideways when the big deal fell through and the media company went off business. Jason was left stranded in Europe with not much left besides debts to pay and his drive to create something meaningful, but his can do attitude got him back on his feet and made things work out. In this interview, we uncover Jason’s path from being born in Cape Town, to studying and working in the U.S., travelling in Europe and building his own business. We talk about entrepreneurial challenges such as making things sustainable and hiring people. Furthermore, we extensively discuss the state of the media in the music industry and the obstacles that artists are facing nowadays to break through. Last but not least, we uncover how to overcome difficulties and how persistence is key, like throwing spaghetti at the wall until it sticks. -- Jason Grishkoff (SubmitHub) -- Connect with Jason: Jason@submithub.com (if you are interested in using SubmitHub, you can also mention this podcast and get credits) Speak with Jason: Submit hub chatroom SubmitHub: https://www.submithub.com Indie Shuffle: https://www.indieshuffle.com Adam Heaton (Spotify Playlist curator and also our HoS guest #8): https://www.adam-heaton.co.uk/playlists Book we mentioned about the founder of CD Baby: Derek Sivers - Anything you want -- Home Of Sound -- Subscribe to our newsletter: bit.ly/HoS_Newsletter Subscribe on YouTube: bit.ly/HoSYoutubeSubscribe All latest links: https://linktr.ee/home_of_sound HoS X Adam Heaton: guest interview + playlist: https://www.adam-heaton.co.uk/playlists/home-of-sound

With over 60 million streams across her catalog, and press support from Refinery 29, Teen Vogue, NYLON, Forbes, HypeBeast, The Line of Best Fit and L'Officiel TRACE feels she has only just begun creating a voice she hopes you keep coming back to.In the Spring of 2021, TRACE did a takeover curating Spotify's DOPE AF playlist, which highlights Asian Female artists. Specifically spotlighting awareness to both the #stopAsiannhate movement as well as her non-profit of choice: Asian Mental Health Collective. Leaving behind her days as a magazine editor to pursue music head on, she's racked up a total of 60 million streams with only one EP and a handful of standalone singles released to date. Championed by the likes of Highsnobiety, Hilly Dilly, Indie Shuffle, Nasty Gal, Pigeons & Planes, Refinery29, Teen Vogue, The 405, The Line Of Best Fit, and The Fader to name a few, it's no surprise she's working with some of the best players in the game.TRACE has been in the studio with producers and co-writers including Mike Derenzo (Tiffany Young, Cautious Clay, EXES), Bram Inscore (Troye Sivan, Allie X, 88 Rising), Haley Gene Penner (Charlotte Lawrence, Lennon Stella), and Phoebe Ryan (literally everyone).========================Welcome to The Vietnamese Podcast!
