Bob Malone has quite literally helped shape the sound of modern trumpet playing around the world. He's been designing trumpets for nearly 40 years and is widely recognized as one of the premier trumpet designers in the world. His instruments are played in major orchestras across the globe, and his influence can be heard through the artistry of many of the finest trumpet players of our time.I've had the privilege of knowing Bob for almost 50 years, and watching his evolution—from passionate trumpet player to visionary instrument designer—has been nothing short of inspiring. So it was a real pleasure to sit down with him and explore the journey that has defined his life's work.In Part 1, we kick off our conversation by diving into how Bob has applied the Japanese concept of Kaizen—the philosophy of continuous improvement—to his work over the years. From there, we go back to his early days as a trumpet player and explore how his passion for the instrument led him to the world of design and craftsmanship. He shares how key figures like Larry Minick and Tom Stevens mentored him and helped shape his path, leading to the founding of Bob Malone's Brass Technology, and eventually, his pivotal role at Yamaha Corporation.Bob also recounts his first major design collaboration with trumpeter Bobby Shew—a project made possible through the support of his close friend, Kenzo Kawasaki. In Part 2 [Subscriber Content], we get into some of Bob's experiences working with a remarkable roster of trumpet luminaries, including Håkan Hardenberger, John Hagstrom, Allen Vizzutti, David Bilger, Chris Martin, Tom Rolfs, Wayne Bergeron, Bo Nilsson, and conductor Andris Nelsons. His stories are a fascinating glimpse into the minds of these incredible musicians and the collaborative process behind great instrument design. And since Bob has spent so much of his career on the road, we also talk about his favorite travel destinations, memorable meals, and how he manages the inevitable jet lag that comes with a global career.Would you like more inspirational stories, suggestions, insights, and a place to continue the conversations with other listeners? BOB MALONE is the kind of party your neighbors come upstairs to tell to turn down, and then enjoy the music so much they stay all night dancing, getting high and plooking your Auntie! Malone, armed only with a pillaged and deflowered piano, has thrown that party for Ringo Starr, John Fogerty, Bruce Springsteen, and Bob Seger. The singer/songwriter brings that same bacchanalian revelry to all of his solo albums. Here, egged on by Richard Niles, Malone demolishes his piano, shreds his songs, propositions his wife (Karen Nash, who needed little encouragement) and created Looziana licentiousness. We suggest you watch this video barefoot with a bottle of almond oil and a friend who can cut a rug! We are pleased to present our annual and traditional episode of new Christmas music. This is far and away our most popular episode every year and it has nothing to do with the host. These featured artists graciously offer up their music for review and allow us to include them in this special episode. Evidently you love it too. Last year's episode has not only been listened to more than a quarter of a million times it is still going strong, drawing downloads in the thousands weekly. This episode is even better that one. With us approaching our 2nd pandemic Christmas these great Christmas creators are all conveying through their music exactly what it is that we feel, what we value in Christmas and how we want this Christmas to be. It is, at the end of the day, all about love. We did not plan for this theme (or any theme at all) for this episode it has just spontaneously happened. Please listen and enjoy, especially for those artists who took the time to talk with us to share some of the backstories of these great songs. I invited Bob to join me to talk a little about his unique relationship to Thomas Stevens, the path that led him away from pursuing a career in the performing arts, his approach towards design from artistry, his many years with Yamaha, and the unique historic moment that led him to briefly host two of the most important trumpet players of all time under one roof during a strange number of months in Los Angeles. There's a little bit of everything in this one, even some design history for the gearheads… Music generously supplied by Dan Gonzalez --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/artssalon/support

Bob Malone. In case you don’t know the name, I am happy to be the one bringing this remarkable and talented keyboard wizard into your orbit… There are some people you encounter in life who immediately stand out in some inexplicable way. You may have heard it described as the X Factor, or that “IT” factor. An aura. Bob has that. I still remember like it was yesterday… several members of the National Academy of Songwriters (now The Songwriters Guild) had volunteered to help repaint their offices. Bob and I were among that group and so I was on the floor placing masking tape along the wall above the molding. Malone was coming from the other direction and we met in the middle where we struck up a conversation. Turned out he was a keyboard player. A new kid in town from New Jersey who like many of us , had trekked out to L.A. to seek their fame and fortune. We immediately struck up a friendship. Eventually, I ended up recording some demos for him (and with him) at my home studio in Venice and helped him get a steady gig at the Chimneysweep, where I was acting as entertainment coordinator. I played there on Sunday nights, myself. The Hal Show. Acoustic Sunday. Bob eventually started making a name for himself in L.A. as a music transcriber, singer/songwriter, arranger, session musician, and music supervisor. He has performed and or recorded with living legends, and in fact he’s been touring with John Fogerty, a founding member of Creedence Clearwater Revival, for the last decade. He’s opened for the Neville Brothers (recently, we said goodbye to Art Neville). On their last tour, Bob got to share the stage with Mr. Springsteen, himself. I wish I had more time to talk to Bob – – – When I finally caught up with him, he was on his way back from a recording session on a new project. What else is new? Mr. Malone is ALWAYS working on something new. That’s why he’s always got such good stories! So, our conversation barely touched the tip of the iceberg. Talk a bout a road warrior? He was literally in his car during the entire conversation, so the audio might have been a little funky in patches. Which is fitting, because Bob Malone really knows how to bring the funk! Some the topics we covered include: Old Bob Malone songs. New Bob Malone songs. A brand new video called Good People (and I’M in it!). Yay! … for about a second. The iconic accordion solo he before John Fogarty and the rest of the band break into Looking’ Out My Back Door Touring Europe - Italy and Paris in particular. Shark week and the Sparkly Shark song by Bob’s wife, Karen Nash who is also a shellologist. Bob’s epic photos of the crowds taken from a stage-eye view An encounter with Jackson Browne while playing keyboards for Ricki Lee Jones (who I’ve seen naked - in my worst Jon Lovitz voice). Hey, no biggie… it was the 70’s. Everyone sat in a hot tub naked back in the day. BOB MALONE LINKS AND RESOURCES THE OFFICIAL BOB MALONE WEBSITE - Go there. Sign up for the Bob Malone Mailing list and purchase his music and merchandise there! BOB’S YOUTUBE CHANNEL Personal Favorites: Chinese Algebra (The full, live version of the one at the end of the interview) I Know He’s Your Husband Watching Over Me (Official Live Video) This is based on a true story about how one time Bob went to Las Vegas and only had a single one dollar bill to his name. The song tells the rest of this amazing experience. Meet Me In Manhattan - Bob wrote this for his - well I’ll let him tell you… Bob Malone's Blog Posts Crawl Across Texas - a story by Bob Malone. Bob Malone has toured the world as a solo artist for two decades and has played keyboards with rock legend John Fogerty since 2011. His sound is a one of-a-kind hybrid of rock, blues, and New Orleans R&B, delivered with high-energy piano virtuosity and a voice all his own. Currently based in Los Angeles, he still plays with Fogerty’s band plus an average of 100 solo shows a year. Malone has shared stages with Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Jimmy Buffett, Rickie Lee Jones, The Neville Brothers, Rev. Al Green, among others. Toronto-born, LA-based ARI finds healing and her unapologetic voice in music. Her education is in psychology but her art is music that deftly dances in and out of genre lines, moving from entrancing alternative pop to gritty hip-hop production under a cover of electronic elegance. At the same time, the visceral lyrics transmit messages of hope as often as they ponder tragedy. Her sound comes to life in the middle. “There’s dark and light inside all of us,” she says. “Every opposite is a complement. You can’t have beauty without pain. You can’t have success without failure. You can’t have the ying without the yang. You accept yourself amidst those demons.” Her album Tunnel Vision plays by its own rules, reflecting the meaning of her name – “eagle “ in Nordic and “lion” in Hebrew. Together they make for one of the most interesting artists in the current music scene.

Fall is in the air in The Roadhouse studios. We're starting to see the pre-holiday season releases rolling out, and I've got a bunch of them in this edition. Reverend Raven & The Chainsmokin' Altar Boys, Bob Malone, Joe Louis Walker, Luxuriant Sedans, and Ebony Jo-Ann fill the hour. And, as usual, you'll probably find it to be an hour of irresistable chair-dancing. For all the new music and the great beats, you know it's gonna be another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 554th Roadhouse.
