A jam-packed episode of No Tags this week, but we had a lot to catch up on. Central Cee's debut album Can't Rush Greatness is out (02:56) and it's UK drill's biggest album to date, almost by default. Eusexua (10:07) might be the record that finally sells us on FKA twigs? And we talk about the grey zones of desire in Babygirl over in film corner (18:32).But then onto the main event: we're joined this week by NYC DJ and virtual pop architect umru (30:09). A key member of SoundCloud's class of the mid-2010s, umru officially graduated to the hyperpop top tier in 2017 with his work on Charli XCX's game-changing Pop 2 mixtape. He's since worked with the likes of Hannah Diamond, Tommy Cash, Hyd, Dorian Electra and more while releasing his own music on PC Music and, this year, LuckyMe. He's also one of our favourite DJs, with an anything-goes approach that feels firmly in the legacy of faves like Total Freedom, Evian Christ and Ryan Hemsworth. We also talked about his past life running parties on Minecraft, leak culture, pop's Splice era, and the link between PC Music and Pirates of the Caribbean.A little housekeeping: after a small delay the second pressing of No Tags: Conversations on underground music culture should be arriving in the next week, so if you missed out the first time, head to Shopify to place your order. In the meantime, if you're enjoying No Tags, please do rate, review and subscribe on your podcast app of choice. We'd also ask you to consider subscribing to our paid tier, which costs £5 a month and helps us continue planning, recording, editing and transcribing podcasts like this one. We've got more noise for you this week with Chet Porter, one of our top 3 Canadians of all time, dropping in to share some insights and some chuckles ahead of the release of his new album "EYES" and his headline show in Los Angeles. Also, if you're a fan of Owl City, then you're definitely in good company here. Chet joins us to discuss painful fan interactions on Runyon Canyon, getting signed to a label with his high school Pop-punk band, learning how to produce on his dad's Acer laptop, the helpful influence of Ryan Hemsworth, being super uncomfortable while playing EDC, the caution young artists should exercise when signing with a label, if albums have the same impact in the culture in 2023, the ridiculous saga of getting banned from Twitter while impersonating a certain president (guess which one), and much much more! Shalom - "Happenstance" from the 2023 album Sublimation on Saddle Creek. Brooklyn-based, South Africa-raised artist Shalom had been playing bass in bands while in New Brunswick for college, and working on home-recorded solo songs on the side, when she was discovered by producer Ryan Hemsworth. He invited her to contribute to his collaborative project Quarter-Life Crisis, which led to her being signed with Saddle Creek Records, who released her debut album Sublimation earlier this year. On today's Song of the Day, the Brooklyn-based, South Africa-raised artist sings of her "need to evaporate and receive validation at the same time," displaying a raw vulnerability against a dancey beat. “The record is an introduction to me as a songwriter,” she says in a press statement. “I think it shows my versatility, but really, it's me being really honest, earnest, and naked. You can see my bones on this record. I'm okay with it though, because I've got to get it out.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We had the pleasure of interviewing EDEN over Zoom video!Singer, songwriter, and producer, EDEN shares his latest full-length album ICYMI. The project is a sonic odyssey through loss and life, dovetailed by EDEN's effortless welding of genres between electronic, R&B, and something else entirely his own. ICYMI deftly weaves between euphoric dance beats, ambient field recordings, and an unshakeable sense of urgency as EDEN catapults towards catharsis.ICYMI is experimental in both its sound and its creation, and EDEN's acute conceptual grasp on the project is evident. Over the 11-tracks, EDEN flexes masterful production and intimate songwriting with both echoing synths and thought-provoking lyrics that echo long after listening. ICYMI is EDEN's first full-length release since his most recent album, no future (2020). After clocking in at No. 26 on the US Billboard charts with no future, EDEN returns with the eagerly-awaited and highly-ambitious ICYMI. He has released 4 EP's along with debut album vertigo (2018) which peaked at No. 34 on the US Billboard charts. A producer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, EDEN (real name Jonathon Ng) is a musical tour de force. Most of the Dublin-based artist's work is self-produced and recorded in his London at-home studio. ICYMI boasts that all songs were “written, recorded, performed, and produced by Jonathon Ng in Dublin, London, Miami, Cancun, and Los Angeles,” with the exception of a few instrumental/vocal contributions. EDEN has been sampled by Meek Mill, and has released projects with rappers Vic Mensa and ATO, and producers Kai Whiston and Ryan Hemsworth. An innovative and well-respected influence across genres, EDEN has been cited as an influence to emerging hyperpop artists Ericdoa and Underscores as well as producer Claire Rousay. We want to hear from you! Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Ryan Hemsworth over Zoom video! The genesis of Ryan Hemsworth’s new project, Quarter-Life Crisis, can be traced all the way back to his childhood bedroom in Nova Scotia, where the producer spent the bulk of his high school years listening to emerging indie acts and playing guitar. Not loving the sound of his own voice and without a band, he eventually started making music on his laptop, which earned him accolades as he stepped out into electronic and club music scenes. His prolific output, paired with a voracious appetite for a wide range of genres and creation of his own label Secret Songs, has made Hemsworth a fixture since he released his debut solo album, Guilt Trips, in 2013.But now, Hemsworth’s trying his hand at something unexpected that is nonetheless close to his heart and origin story as a musician. Quarter-Life Crisis is a collaboration with various artists who’ve come to prominence over the past couple of years, many of whom got their start playing scrappy DIY shows. The self-titled debut EP was released on December 4th, 2020 via Saddle Creek and features contributions from Frances Quinlan (Hop Along), Meg Duffy (Hand Habits), Charlie Martin (Hovvdy), Yohuna, and Claud. It showcases Hemsworth in a new phase of his career, one that is perhaps a bit less indebted to the nightclub dance floor.Collaboration is paramount to Hemsworth’s process, and though he produced all of the instrumentation on the album, he left the lyrics and intention of the song up to the contributors. The resulting collection shape shifts from track-to-track, taking on new personalities as it moves between artists.Working with musicians who largely fall into the category of “indie” gave Hemsworth the opportunity to revisit some of the artists who inspired him to become a musician in the first place. He cites bands like the Cardigans, Grandaddy, Bright Eyes, and Sparkle horse as being foundational to his writing process this time around. Quarter-Life Crisis a sharp turn away from his last project, 2019’s CIRCUS CIRCUS, which he made alongside the Japanese rap duo Yurufuwa Gang, but for Hemsworth, working in a wide array of genres and modes keeps him on his toes, and ultimately, keeps his career interesting. We want to hear from you! This week, a pair of artist interviews from opposite ends of the sonic spectrum. JUNO Award-winning, PEI-based trio The East Pointers have been making big waves in the roots music community with their infectious fusion of folk, trad, and pop sensibilities and thrilling live shows. Their latest album, What We Leave Behind, takes it further with the help of East Coast legend Gordie Sampson in the producer’s chair. The full band joins Mike to discuss their musical backgrounds, developing their sound, working with Sampson, dealing with critical folk and trad purists, roots music’s industry infrastructure, and more. Plus, we catch innovative electronic songwriter and producer Ryan Hemsworth to chat about Elsewhere, which Pitchfork says is ripe with "catchy, globe-trotting pop." Ryan tells Andrew about compiling a diverse guestlist of collaborators from around the world, finding common ground with other creators, how his Halifax roots may have seeped into his output, and more.

Kill Them With Colour, however, remains unclassifiable. KTWC is an inspired term to describe vibrant art that takes a form of music, as if the spectrum of sound can be visualized in colour. Each track carries its own sense of wholeness and character, bringing a feeling and experience of sound that leaves no threshold of categorization.Kill Them With Colour have produced a variety of remixes as well as original tracks, that juxtapose from chill and wavy, to bass thumping and room-shaking sounds. With over 5 million combined views and listens on Youtube and Soundcloud, as well as recognition from countless blogs and djs. They’ve hit #1 on The Hype Machine countless times for remixing artists such as Kid Cudi, Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey, Raury, Marvin Gaye, Chromeo, Bon Iver, A$AP Rocky and Michael Jackson (to name a few) and Hype M Radio listed their Ariel Pink remix “Round and Round” as the #9 overall remix that year. Most recently, their original song “Always Somethin” garnered worldwide success, reaching #1 on HypeMachine once again and establishing KTWC as not only one of the top remixers in the game, but also as producers of original material.Acknowledgement of their talent has been written up by industry taste-makers such as: THUMP, Indie Shuffle, Hilly Dilly, Do Androids Dance, Hypetrak, Earmilk, Kick Kick Snare, Salacious Sound, Stoney Roads, Stupid Dope, Generation Bass, Mostly Junk Food and DJMag to name a few. They've crafted mixes for Toronto's own Handsome Clothing, Empty Culture and the UK’s Capital Xtra.On an international scale, Kill Them With Colour has played live alongside: Cut Copy, Classixx, Azari & lll, Viceroy, Moon Boots, Fred Falke, Solidisco, John Roman, Peer Pressure, and has played locally with the likes of: Torro Torro, Rynecologist, Ryan Hemsworth and Subfractal among others.Look for KTWC to continue to build their catalogue, with a slew of official remixes on the way and an original EP due out in early 2015, coupled with an interactive live experience that speaks true to their name both sonically and visually.

Toronto's latest hype band Moon King is two best friends: Daniel Benjamin and Maddy Wilde. These two have been making music together for most of their lives. They started Toronto youth-pop band Spiral Beach when they were barely teenagers (along with Daniel's brother Airick who is now the man behind Montreal buzz band Doldrums). I chatted with Daniel on a busy Friday night Robson Street. We talked about everything from surviving a band break up, what it's like working for his brother Airick (as the drummer in Doldrums) and that strange song Daniel wrote about Jupiter having sex with Mercury. You have to listen to our chat! Daniel told me that the Moon King “Only Child” is the track Moon King fans know his band for the most, but do Moon King fans know what (and who) this song is about? You'll have to listen to our chat to find out. Since I talked with Moon King, the band has signed to indie powerhouse Last Gang Records (home to DFA 1979, Purity Ring and Ryan Hemsworth among others) so expect to see BIG things from these two in the near future. Tracks played on the show... 1) Moon King Obsession I EP (2012) "Only Child" 2) Moon King Obsession I EP (2012) "Sleeping In My Car" 3) Moon King Obsession II EP (2013) "Appel" 4) Moon King Obsession II EP (2013) "Dream Trap" ALL songs CANCON
When I met DJ and electronic music producer Ryan Hemsworth outside the club, he had just gotten handed a large brown paper bag. Ok… I wasn't quite sure what kind of deal I had accidentally walked into, so I decided to roll with it and we did the interview in an especially shady parking lot. It seemed like the perfect place to release all my lingering questions. Listen to my chat with Ryan Hemsworth for the answers to these following questions… What was in that brown paper bag? What was the last song that got him super emotional? Why has he marked all my emails as SPAM? And more! Tracks played on the show... 1) Ryan Hemsworth, Guilt Trips (2013) “Small + Lost” (ft Sinead Harnett) 2) Ryan Hemsworth, No Plans (2011) “Good Things Can Never Last” 3) Squadda B, Back Sellin/ Crack (Mixtape 2011) “Mama House” (produced by Ryan Hemsworth) ** 4) Ryan Hemsworth, Guilt Trips (2013) “Against A Wall” (ft Lofty 305) ALL songs CANCON except **
Ryan Hemsworth started as a lonely boy in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He used the Internet to put out his music and find other cool people to collaborate with. Before he knew it, one of his tracks was on the BBC, he was producing for rappers via email, and then he was discovering new friends like Baauer and Shlomho. There's no denying the guy is hardworking and dedicated, but it's still amazing to me to see how the Internet can connect people all over the world. Listen to my chat with a fellow music nerd. Tracks played on the show... 1) Ryan Hemsworth, Last Words EP “Charlie Wingate” 2) Grimes “Genesis” ft Deniro Farrar (Ryan Hemsworth remix) 3) Ryan Hemsworth, Last Words EP “Slurring” (Baauer remix) 4) Ryan Hemsworth, No Plans “Good Things Never Last” ALL songs CANCON
