Reporter: Thella Johnson, P1 Kultur.

Graham and Charles take a look at what Sofia Coppolla's new film Priscilla says about Mr & Mrs Elvis and contrast it to Baz Lurmann's own take on the couple in his film, Elvis.Harrogate gets a mention in a brilliant new book on Pauline Boty, the most overlooked figure in the British Pop Art movement of the 1960s.As the charts of the year reveal yet another bland list of pop artists, Graham proposes that BBC 6 launches its own chart.
Graham is wondering just what is the role of BBC 6Music in light of the latest official radio listening figures after a scheduling revamp? Plus, why if MOJO magazine is 30 years old does it feel more like 80?Graham contests that The Rolling Stones had an underrated role in inventing punk rock. Charles spots dinosaurs hoving into view.

Does the downgrading of old skool indie DJs Mark Riley and Gideon Coe mean the beginning of the end for BBC 6 Music? Block Party, The Huey Show, Sat 3rd December 2022 // A mix to promote The Huey Show presents: The Hip Hop Mixtape, a weekly BBC 6Music and BBC Sounds show presented by Huey Morgan and produced by T-Bone and Agent J. // https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001fb3z//
Mettetevi comodi e schiacciate play. Today I bring you one man's response to early life messages - Jay Stansfield, for decades now, has been putting a middle finger up to all those teachers that thought he couldn't do _____ (insert a host of activities). “You're not Creative, and here's Why” In fact, maybe someone planted that seed in your brain a long, long time ago too. Maybe someone keeps telling you, you can't draw. Or sing. Or organise things. Listen into my conversation with Jay as we explore how (despite all the negative messages) he's become an illustrator, musician, songwriter and creative multimedia artist and most recently, an entrepreneurial children's author. Jay, is a northern, 41 year-old with an 'IndyBest colouring books for creative kids' accolade in The Independent for his debut book Squibbles. Jay has also published Squibbles 2 and Meet The Squibbles and is now also a growing name in the emerging world of NFT collectibles. Check these out my friends! Jay's simultaneously a music artist with over 25 years in the music industry who has performed two John Peel sessions with his old band Element, played support to Grandaddy, Ultrasound, Dodgy, Mike and the Mechanics and had remixes by EMF, Republica and Martin Carr from The Boo Radleys, with international radio play across the world. He currently performs with altpunkrock group All Hail Hyena, who've been championed by Tom Robinson on BBC 6Music and John Robb via his acclaimed music blog Louder Than War and are currently promoting their new album 3 Organs Down, which they've released on a brand new format as the world's first ALBOOK™. Jay lives in Lancashire in the UK and is a proud father of two daughters. “School for Fathers Podcast is like a cold beer”

Welcome to series four of Take My Advice (I'm Not Using). Today's guest is Will Page, the former Chief Economist of Spotify and PRS for Music where he pioneered 'Rockonomics'. At PRS he published work on Radiohead's In Rainbows and saving BBC 6Music. At Spotify, he helped redefine catalogue and articulated the global value of music copyright. In this episode, we discuss how Will's determination to work in the music business led to him becoming the industry's first Chief Economist. We also explore the concept of 'builder's and 'farmers' in tech businesses, as Will explains how Spotify founder and CEO, Daniel Ek, successfully bridges the gap between both. There's also a conversation about the danger of NPS (Net Promoter Score), the rising importance of consumption over transaction data, NFTs (non-fungible tokens), and how data has impacted the creative process in music.LINKS:Will Page's new book, Tarzan EconomicsNPSistheworst.comWill's LSE articleFuture Work/Life newsletterFuture Work/Life websitePodcast episode with Christopher Lochhead on Category Design and 'niching down'Podcast episode with Ben Legg on Portfolio Careers See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Carey, Sebastian Plano & Loscil, also appearing at Latitude Festival, Q3Ambientfest, FAN Festival and a range of concerts shows and live music events. His music is regularly played on BBC Radio 3 alongside BBC 6Music, BBC World Service & BBC Introducing, KEXP and NeoFM, his music has been streamed 10 million times across platforms. In this episode, we discussed the support that Sim has received through Launchpad, Help Musicians and how he was one of the first awardees of the new ring-fenced Momentum Accelerator fund for artists in Yorkshire. James King BBC Radio 2 (previously Radio 1) Rhianna Dhillon (BBC 6music, also previously Radio 1) return to Flixwatcher to review James’ choice John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (JW3) picks up exactly where Chapter 2 ends, Wick (Keanu Reeves) is now “excommunicado” after an unauthorized killing on the grounds of The Continental Hotel and is on the run from every hitman in New York. JW3 takes the ante that was upped in JW2 and turns everything up to 11. The mythology of the High Table is expanded, Wick travels to Casablanca, there are horse fu and attack dogs, even more, ultra-violence, more humour, and Jerome Flynn. Chances are if you enjoyed JW and JW2 you’ll probably like JW3 (possibly it could be your favourite in the franchise so far), if you didn’t you’ll probably give this one a miss. If you’ve always wanted to see John Wick kill someone with a book then this film is the one for you. Scores [supsystic-tables id=157] Rhianna remains unconvinced but it’s Kobi’s favourite of the franchise so far, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum scores 3.46 overall. In the biggest Big Smoke Music Weekly episode to date, we bring you 2 interviews from some of the UK’s best Indie acts, recorded across a jam-packed weekend at BBC 6 Music Festival! First on the bill is our exclusive sit down with Sports Team. 3 of the 6-strong gang join us - Rob Knaggs, Al Greenwood and Alex Rice - to chat ahead of their eagerly anticipated debut album, ‘Deep Down Happy’. The band tell-all on their lighthearted take on life and how that bleeds into their quick witted writing and onstage flair. We ask them about mixing things up with fans through mad last-minute guerrilla gigs, and how their tunes come from a place of fun-loving madness. The Orielles speak with us a couple of weeks after the release of their second album, ‘Disco Volador’. An album dripping in disco, funk and cosmic pop tastiness, Sidonie and and Esme from the band run us through the influences behind the release and the stress that comes in putting a second album together. We find out about the mad anticipation a band can feel ahead of playing new material out on the road. We have these two interviews, plus gig reviews from across the festival, including The Big Moon’s magical set at the Roundhouse’s Sackler Space, and Sunday’s bash down at Camden’s Electric Ballroom which saw blistering sets from Warmduscher, Squid and Bombay Bicycle Club! And... as coronavirus spreads, we look at how it is starting to hit the music world. Lauran Hibberd talks us through the impact of SXSW being cancelled and what that means for up and coming bands. Welcome to the show!
Rhianna Dhillon (BBC 6music, previously Radio 1) and James King BBC Radio 2, also previously Radio 1) join Flixwatcher to review Rhianna’s choice Sense and Sensibility. Sense and Sensibility is the 1995 Ang Lee directed adaptation of the Jane Austen classic starring Emma Thompson (winning Best Adapted Screenplay), Kate Winslet and Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant I’m supporting roles. It tells the story of the Dashwood girls, who after the death of their father are left in “ruin” with only their half brother John to look after them financially. After they are moved to a more modest house the older sisters Elinor (Thompson) and Marianne (Winslet) fall in love with various characters, with their respective ‘sense’ and ‘sensibility’ reflected in their interactions. An absolute must for any Austen fan, this version allowed Thompson to bring her own flourish to a well loved classic and it was largely well received. Questionable whether non Austen aficionados would find it as charming, especially given its two hour run time. Scores [supsystic-tables id=147] There was mostly a lot of love for Sense and Sensibility and it scored generously on recommendability but slight lower on engagement due to the two hour run time, giving an overall score of 3.89. Joining Tom Jackson, in a special programme recorded at the Birmingham Conservatoire as part of the Birmingham Literature Festival, to discuss the postcards from their pasts are writer and BBC 6Music broadcaster STUART MACONIE (Long Road From Jarrow, Pies and Prejudice, Adventures on The High Teas, The People's Songs) and award-winning poet LIZ BERRY (Black Country, The Republic of Motherhood). We uncover long-distance love, the best LP ever made, working class autodidacts and the mysteries of landscape. Along the way we visit the Wren's Nest, a steelworks, a series of royal arches, an Aberystwyth clifftop, the back streets of Salford and a New York church. Wish you were here? It’s the end of Season two and what better way to finish than with BBC 6 Music DJ and all round professional curmudgeon Shaun Keaveny. To switch it up a bit we also brought in Alex Carter to add to the laugh salad, friend of the pod and also the occasional punch bag for Mr K.It’s a cracking episode with some good Hate Envelopes as well as a in depth look into value and capacity of travel bags. The North Face Borealis was voted best. Sorry to kill that buzz.Listening to Shaun talk about his email inbox is about as anxiety inducing as it gets so strap in and enjoy.Muchos love Chris & Leon

This episode's guest is radio and podcast producer Shola Aleje. Shola works on Lauren Laverne's BBC 6 Music show, as well as producing podcasts for Emma Gannon, Cherry Healey and Bestival. We recorded in Shola's London living room, which has a gorgeous vintage vibe, a shelving unit filled with vinyl and a large canvas print of Bruce Springsteen from around the turn of the century. We talk about how radio was a way of connecting across time and space before the internet; being part of the first generation to grow up without, and then with, mobiles and easy access to the internet; and what we can learn from cover versions and samples. Find the covers we talk about here: https://twitter.com/freelance_pod_/status/1067795701227245569 We also go down memory lane right back to the 90s and reminisce about the voices we heard on the way to school in the morning, Bam Bam and Streetboy on Kiss 100 Breakfast. Where are they now? -- How has your industry moved from analogue to digital? Each episode, creative guests tell host Suchandrika Chakrabarti how the internet has revolutionised work. Cult UK filmmaker, DJ and musician Don Letts played a key role in introducing reggae music to the punk scene in 1970's London. He lives by the code of 'hustle,' famously sneaking into Bob Marley's hotel room to talk with him and then becoming friends. Don continues to make films and hosts 'Culture Clash Radio' on BBC 6Music on Saturday and Sunday night. For a slightly shorter talk than usual, Don packs a lot of audio dynamite into our conversation, discussing what we've lost in the digital revolution and why he still considers himself an aspiring filmmaker. Ferrocolor HD - InDeep Nov 2013 (InDa Sessions 1)It's May 2015 and I'm currently in India, seven weeks into a six month sabbatical. After a month of traveling and site seeing we’ve landed in Varkala, Kerala. It's low season at this cliff-top beach town and so the place is quiet, thanks to the forthcoming monsoon. We checked into InDa Hotel for three days and have been here for three weeks. Our first week was so rainy that locals were suggesting the monsoon had come early. What better opportunity to kick back and catch up on some mix playlists that have been sitting untouched for years.Given the rain and grey skies, I homed-in on something reflective to begin: a selection of deep house grooves originally compiled in November 2013. But this isn't miserable, cold, London rain. It’s hot, humid and thundering. In fact, the steamy weather you hear in the mix was recorded from the terrace of our bungalow here at InDa. These tunes may be two years old, but they blend perfectly today.Tracks of note include Wicked Games. Complete with Jamie XX-style steel pan climax, it transcends the Chris Isaak-crooned 80s original, of which I was never a fan. The Bob Moses track, All I Want, also takes a brilliant diversion towards the end when the bassline kicks in. I first stumbled on All I Want via Ben Watt’s BBC 6Music show. Mario Basanov works his magic on Crazy P’s Changes before we get a dawn glimpse of Cocktail Skies. Must be a shepherd’s warning. Adam Buxton is somewhat of a cult hero. Thanks to his work on the Adam & Joe show on Channel 4, then on XFM, then on BBC 6Music, he's amassed such a dedicated fanbase that we knew that releasing just ten minutes of our chat with him would be a great waste. Here then is a half-hour long special with the bearded podcast king, boasting the question-asking talents of Chris Hewitt, Nick de Semlyen and Ali Plumb.
Former Station Manager Matt "Giggsy" Skinner talks to Steve Lamacq on BBC 6Music about Tequila Radio.
Did the death of singer Whitney Houston and the acquittal of football manager Harry Redknapp deserve to top the news bulletins? Many listeners feel that important events at home and abroad were shunted aside unjustifiably. In this week's Feedback Roger asks Mary Hockaday, head of the BBC's newsroom, whether the right decisions were made. During a particularly robust episode of the Moral Maze, many listeners felt debate gave way to a dust-up. Michael Buerk tells Roger how he tries - and sometimes fails - to ensure the discussion generates more light than heat. Last week teacher Deborah Mole and her student Kevin agreed to listen exclusively to each other's favourite station for a whole week. After a traumatic week of BBC 1Xtra for her and BBC 6Music for him they reveal what the experience has taught them. Plus by special request there's a soul-stirring valentine's message from velvet-voiced announcer Zeb Soanes ... Presenter: Roger Bolton Producers: Karen Pirie and Kate Taylor A Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4.
Have you ever settled down to listen to a programme on iPlayer - only to find that the last two minutes have been chopped off? Or had to wade through several minutes of unrelated content before your chosen programme begins? In this week's Feedback Roger Bolton asks Andrew Scott, Head of Radio and Music for Future Media, why iPlayer editing is letting listeners down. There are five months still to go until the Olympics, but have Radio 4 listeners already had enough of sport? Following Clare Balding's series Sport and the British - and her appearance on Midweek - Roger hears from listeners who want to keep the station a sport-free zone. And the Feedback Listening Club returns, with three listeners gathering to discuss Radio 4's Saturday Live. If you'd like to take part in a Listening Club, please contact the programme. Plus a new Radioswap begins, as teacher Deborah Mole agrees to swap BBC 6Music for her student Kevin's favourite station, 1Xtra. Tune in next week to find out how they get on.
