What people trust you on is essential. We trust that what Public Media puts out there will be beneficial, trustworthy and real. ~ Kristin Smedley and Mary Fran Bontempo How much do you trust what the world is saying to you? In a world of fake news (often driven by people promoting falsehoods), disrespect and fear as a driving force, it's almost impossible to know whom to trust. Earlier this year, we brought you an episode about Roadtrip Nation – an initiative the SEMI Foundation sponsored to raise awareness among recent STEM graduates about opportunities in the semiconductor industry. We interviewed SEMI Foundation's Shari Liss, to get all the details. You can listen to the episode here. In this follow-up episode, we're speaking with TEL's Katy Crist, who heads up the company's workforce development initiative, and Tara Greig, an intern at TEL who was selected as one of the lucky candidates who participated in this year's Roadtrip Nation. Katy talks about the importance of the Roadtrip Nation project to SEMI's image and awareness campaign about the semiconductor industry as a great career path. She also talks about TEL's involvement. Two-thirds of the way through the experience, Tara shares some highlights of her experience and the journey from applying to the program through the actual three-week adventure, the people she met, the connections and relationships she made, and also provides tips for future applicants who might want to take advantage of this amazing program.Roadtrip Nation is a nonprofit organization that humanizes career exploration through storytelling and empowers individuals to connect their interests to fulfilling lives and careers.Learn more Find our Guests on LinkedINKaty Crist, Sr. Manager, Strategic Alliances and Partnerships, TELTara Greig, Business Informatics Intern, TELTEL Tokyo Electron (TEL) provides innovative semiconductor and flat panel display production equipment.
Workforce development is a critical and ongoing challenge in the microelectronics industry. SEMI Foundation is working to build awareness about the opportunities that come with a career in microelectronics through its Industry Image and Awareness Campaign. Part of that initiative is a partnership with Roadtrip Nation to create a video and documentary series focused on the microelectronics industry. In this episode, I talk with Shari Liss, Executive Director of SEMI Foundation. She explains how for young people interested in STEM, the semiconductor is still fairly invisible. They know all about social media apps, but they don't understand the microelectronics that underpin all these devices. The goal of the Image and Awareness Campaign is to bring the semiconductor out of obscurity, so they can understand what opportunities are available to them.To this end, SEMI Foundation has partnered with the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) and Roadtrip Nation to provide opportunities to students who are interested in learning more about this exciting industry. Listen in to learn all about these programs and how your company can participate and support these efforts. You can learn more about SEMI Foundation's workforce development efforts here. Today we have Kolby Knickerbocker on the show. Shay & Kolby discuss his new EP Over and Over. Kolby hails from Bend, Oregon in the United States where he creates incredibly soulful folk music filled with tributes to community, his family & his experiences. FOR RELEASE February 10, 2021 BEND, OREGON (January 25, 2021) - Kolby Knickerbocker announces the release of the single “Over and Over” on February 10. A modern take on the 50's doowop of Otis Redding and Ben King, the song is dedicated to his wife as a reminder that his love will not waiver. Mixed by Sean Moffitt (Mat Kearney, Josh Groban, Ingrid Michaelson), it's the title track off the upcoming mixed EP due out April 2. Commitment. Stability. Love. A testament that no matter how difficult it gets, no matter how strong the emotion, no matter the challenge, he'll always be there. That's the message Knickerbocker wanted to send to his wife in the song, “Over and Over.” To reinforce the message, he recorded 15 separate vocal parts to recreate a gospel choir effect. The result is intimate, raw, and powerful. Knickerbocker says, “This song is very special to me as I think of my daughter and son when I hear the lyrics. Knowing that they will one day feel the emotion that I have for their mother, my wife, and knowing that they will one day be able to really hear the dedication that we had as a couple is very personal and special to me.” While the title track is about coming back to love and relationship “Over and Over,” the EP's title has a double meaning behind it. The EP is a nod to Knickerbocker's feelings about being a musician. He says, “It can be draining, with long nights and lots of hard work, but I always come back to it because it is something that I love to do. It is endlessly challenging and endlessly fulfilling, so I will come back to writing songs and being a musician Over and Over, no matter how challenging.” About Kolby Knickerbocker Knickerbocker started his professional musical career early on, releasing his first album with Kitty's Musicbox (2004) as a sophomore in college. He has since released an additional full-length album Red Dust (2015) and two EPs, Rodello's Machine (2012) and Animus (2016). Nate Donnis who's received industry attention from the BBC's series “Skins” and the PBS series Roadtrip Nation, appeared on Rodello's Machine. Knickerbocker has received critical acclaim from industry tastemakers including Indie Shuffle and KCRW. His music has been featured in television shows like MTV's Degrassi High, 90210, Heart Signal, and Barely Breathing. https://youtu.be/MWCNThMW9Cw The lyric video to the second single of the Over and Over EP. Lyrics: Pray, God please help me live this day Bring peace and joy Let these memories stay And this I know, To love her always Mmmm… Pray, God please help me live this day Let beauty overwhelm me Take my breath away And when the years have gone Watching the setting sun May these memories Of her Stay beautiful Amen https://youtu.be/Qwsbwcra0ow The lyric video to the title track single, "Over and Over". Lyrics: It's been a long day It's been a long year It's been a long life And I'm still loving you Through mistakes and heartaches Through kisses and words unkind Through silent nights I'm still loving you Lay your head down Breathe in and breathe out Cause I will love you Over and over again Live, laugh, and love Lay your worries aside I will love you Over and over again There is nothing you could say Nothing you could do, to turn me away I will love you the best I can Over and over again Darling, you could leave me You could run for the hills I'll be waiting For you to come home I know your heart is wild And impossible to please So I'll be waiting For you to come home Lay your head down Breathe in and breathe out Cause I will love you Over and over again Live, laugh, and love Lay your worries aside I will love you Over and over again There is nothing you could say Nothing you c...
Priscilla Grijalva interviews Willie Witte, Creative Director for Roadtrip Nation. We discuss the amazing career exploration resources. Roadtrip Nation creates and distributes best-in-class career exploration content, products, and experiences to help individuals pursue fulfilling careers based on what’s important to them. After graduating from college, Mike Marriner travelled across America with two college friends in an old, green RV. Along the way, they interviewed leaders across a wide array of fields and occupations to learn how folks got to where they were. That first trip resulted in the book Roadtrip Nation: A Guide to Discovering Your Road in Life and soon led to the founding of Road Trip Nation where Mike and team now provide that same experiential learning experience to other students. They've been regularly featured on PBS and across major media outlets over the past 20 years. In a wide-ranging conversation, we touch on how the lowering of barriers to entry is making it easier than ever to chart new career paths like Mike's. He reflects on recent work they've done to launch Roadtrip Nation's first Online Course allowing their tools and insights to reach a broader audience who might not be able to take to the road. Mike recounts stories from recent trips with community college students, and students with learning disabilities, among others. We conclude by getting Mike's perspective on the years ahead where he has plans to amplify the stories of vulnerable populations on trips with groups like formerly incarcerated populations. Mike also touches on how he's looking to scale the impact of Roadtrip Nation through tools like the online course and their library of over 8000 interviews. It's an inspiring and aspirational conversation and we thank Mike for kicking off our 2021 season of Trending in Education in style. How do you define success? In our second interview with landscape photographer Nat Magnuson, we dig into the story behind his life-long love of photography. An avid backpacker, Nat has been taking photos of the outdoors since he was a child. His photos, which focus on capturing the feeling of a moment are often tied to the story behind them. We dive deep, exploring the idea that it's the journey, wrong-turns and all, that help to define your RoadMap (a book he leant me written by the folks at Roadtrip Nation). If you believe in your creativity, your art will come. We touch on why digital was a limited medium when it first came out and how it's learning the tech well enough to forget about the tech that makes you an expert. Nat shares how he found his tribe in photo school, then went to LA to pursue a photography career, and although he thought he had found an exciting nitch following Hollywood stunt-performers economic constraints found him gaining membership into the set-dresser's union and unable to join the Photographer's union even though he'd earned the required 100 days working for various productions (and signing many of his rights away to less than scrupulous companies). Nat found himself working 85 hours a week he was beginning to feel years of his life slipping away. He had fallen into a Hollywood career that many would find enviable but longed for the open spaces. Nat shares the pivotal moment when he realized that he had amassed a body of work worthy of opening his first gallery, and why for him it's the moments that matter, even if it's never truly captured on film. It is Nat's belief that you can bring your eclectic talents to the table and create your own calling. When is the moment that you become a photographer? ...or a painter, or a craftsman, or a writer or………. Steve hosts an engaging conversation with his long-time friend, Nat Magnuson. Nat is a photographer, songwriter, pianist, perpetual student, and a natural teacher. As a Hollywood set dresser, Nat found an outlet for his exceptional attention to detail. Then, following his own Roadmap (they discuss Roadtrip Nation more in Part 2), he decided to leave Hollywood behind to be closer to his true passions, art, photography, and nature. Steve catches up with him after his recent trip to the Northwest, where he set up an art gallery in a sawmill – an homage to his other passion, old growth wood – at the world-famous Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in Washington State. In this episode, Nat shares his deep knowledge regarding the effects of space and design on the human psyche, as well as making the world a beautiful space by sharing his creative gifts. They dive deep, discussing the importance of bringing intention to a space and how it can make a huge difference in one's life. Nat also shares a far-out exercise that can help anyone learn how to improve any space. Articulating creative impulses using language is a shared experience of struggle that all artists can relate to, no matter what their discipline. Nat has much more to share, from his journey as a photographer to what it was like working in the Motion Picture business. Make sure to SUBSCRIBE to be the first to know about part 2. In this episode of I Heart Costa Mesa Show, we "wade into the depths" with Nathan Gebhard, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Roadtrip Nation. Roadtrip Nation started with a few friends who didn't know what to do with themselves after college. So, to figure it out, they piled into a lime-green RV and road-tripped across the country - stopping along the way to interview thought-leaders, creatives and experts for job advice and wisdom about the lives they lead. The road-trip became a documentary, which inspired a book, that awakened a movement, which became a TV show, which inspired more books, which grew to include a non-profit, that birthed a curriculum - and now there are thematic road-trips being filmed all over the country and students as young as middle-school-age planning their own road-trips, too! All of this is based out of our very own Westside Costa Mesa. Here at I Heart Costa Mesa, we couldn't be more proud of the authentic work Roadtrip Nation is doing, and has been doing, for 17 years. We are tickled green to have Gebhard on the podcast, sharing that story, vision and mission with us. Climb aboard this episode and you might just get inspired to take a road-trip of your own! Today we're talking about the classic american road trip! We went through and picked a bunch of our favorite spots west (and a few east) of the Mississippi. There's millions of places to cover so we decide to only cover a few of our choices. We tell personal stories of things we did for fun and great memories of great to mediocre locations. Anyone remember South of the Border? Hear the tale of Dallas and his mom befriend the restaurant owner of a small mexican restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Experience Conner's diarhea fiasco on a water slide. Remember the great memories of your own road trips! A shout out to the Roadtrip Nation on Twitter for helping us out this week! But how do you figure out who you are, what you love and how to make your dreams reality?Roadtrip Nation started in 2001 when three friends fresh out of college weren’t sure what to do with their lives. Their solution? To road-trip around the country and ask people who do what they love how they got to where they are today.

Roadmap by RoadTrip Nation by Jeff Schechtman

Probably while we were sleeping last night, someone came up with an app that will alter the way we work or play or interact. It’s not surprising then that all of this profoundly impacts the careers we choose, the work we do and and what that work might look like in five, ten or fifteen years. So where to begin. If you are a young person starting out, or a making a mid career change, where is that Roadmap to that future.Roadmap: The Get-It-Together Guide for Figuring Out What to Do with Your Life is the latest book by RoadTrip Nation and my guest Nathan Gebhard. It is based on the wisdom of more than 300 leaders. My conversation with Nathan Gebhard:

Define your own road in life!Road Trip NationWe're revisiting our roots and catching up with old friends in the San Francisco Bay Area, where we stopped in at San Jose State University to attend a presentation about Roadtrip Nation, a PBS program that dispatches teams of 3 college students to travel the country for 6 weeks in a green RV exploring career options by interviewing prominent personalities in business, entertainment, law, public service, and other fields. The team of students we met today interviewed the CEO of Starbucks and leaders of other well-known businesses, as well as stand-up comic Wanda Sykes and talk show host Wendy Williams. And their experience on the road this summer has given them valuable insight into what directions their own lives should take. RoadTrip NationOn PBS MuLanThis week, we present a story about someone else who had to courageously forge her own path: The Song of Mu Lan, a folk tale from China. (Which we've been performing onstage as part of our production "Daring to Dream".) It's the saga of a teenage girl who disguises herself as a man in order to join the army and fight in place of her ailing father, thus preserving family honor. And according to tradition, she served her country extremely well and even became a high-ranking officer. We don't know for certain whether The Song of Mu Lan is a true story, but it was written as a poem about 1500 years ago. The name "Mu Lan", which is translated as "Magnolia", means literally "wood flower", a very appropriate name for a person who appeared as delicate as a flower but turned out to be as durable as wood.
