For this episode I spoke to Dr. Tina Rivers Ryan (@TinaRiversRyan), Assistant Curator at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, art historian, critic, and educator. She's been involved in digital art on the internet well before NFTs were ever a thing but has written some interesting critiques about it all. During the interview we talk about the history of artists using computers and other digital technologies, the interplanetary war in the art world over NFTs, and some of the realities around the NFT art space. Dialogues | A podcast from David Zwirner about art, artists, and the creative process
A conversation with two exciting artists taking their multimedia practices onto the movie screen. Ulman, whose work combines video, performance, and the Internet in fluid ways, recently released her critically-acclaimed first feature film, El Planeta. A hit at the Sundance Film Festival, it features Ulman and her mother as a pair of mother-and-daughter grifters in Gijon, Spain, their hometown. And Lee, who works across all manner of media, also made a standout film that draws from her own life: Mommy is a resonant profile of her mother following her devastating death that, like El Planeta, fuses the visual language of video and Net Art with that of Hollywood.
This episode of the podcast features Cornelia Sollfrank, an early pioneer of Net Art and Cyberfeminism. Cornelia's early work in the 1990s explored how the, recently introduced, World Wide Web could be used to do things in a different manner. Up until this day, her work explores many themes, which are still very relevant to this day; mostly digital cultures, self-organisation through new technologies and data as a tool that can be utilised to both positive and negative effects.

In this episode, AMT Lab contributors Rosemary Haynes, Sam Houle, and Morgan Kasprowicz explore the complicated relationship of art and the internet through the story of net art, particularly Zach Blas’ Contra-Internet. They also examine these ideas through the lenses of data policy and sociological theory and discuss what this means for arts managers in this age of virtual art consumption. Rosemary’s, Sam’s, and Morgan’s research can all be found on the AMT Lab website: www.atm-lab.org.
Was sind mögliche Erscheinungsformen?
Art comes in all shapes and sizes--and sometimes it shows up on your screen. To separate the digital wheat from the chaff we turn to one of the world's leading authorities in the field, Christiane Paul, author of Digital Art (Thames & Hudson), now in its 3rd edition. Prof. Paul is Director and Chief Curator of the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center and Professor in the School of Media Studies at the New School in New York, and Adjunct Curator of Digital Art at the Whitney Museum of American Art. She conceived and has for two decades overseen both the Whitney's artport website and its new media exhibitions, beginning with Data Dynamics in 2001. Her talk at Tate last year provides a concise history of the field. We dive into the origins of digital art, preserving Net Art, museum collaborations, augmented reality, collecting versus licensing content, how artists navigate the commercial colonization of the Web, and the complex boundaries between acts of protest and anti-social hacking.

In this episode Fiona and Julie this week talk over the phone with the contemporary artist http://debbiemackinnon.com who answered so many of our questions about how to take those next steps towards having an art show outside of your local areas. Debbie helps unpack the myths and gives great advise to emerging artists Fiona Verity and Julie Nicholson and helps them to see that you need to be brave and plan ahead. In the midst of the global crisis of Covid-19 it was fabulous to be able to connect via technology rather than the original booked face to face interview and we are grateful to learn from such an experienced artist. As an artist, academic, and a cofounder to an art technology company called Monograph, Kevin McCoy brings a unique perspective to the idea of authorship & ownership in its application to the digital and internet art scene. Established in 2014, Monegraph aimed to solve issues of provenance and legitimacy artists and collectors face when selling and buying digital art works. In this episode, we speak with Kevin about how Monegraph was received in its initial years, why provenance matters in the art world, and what some of the hurdles are facing digital and new media artists today.-About Kevin McCoy-His artworks take many diverse forms including video sculpture and installation, photography, long-form film, curatorial practice and performance, kinetic sculpture and software-driven on-line projects. Thematically, his work explores changing conditions around social roles, categories, genres and forms of value. His primary research questions ask 'What counts as new,’ 'How is meaning established,' and 'How are cultural memories formed'. He has worked collaboratively with Jennifer McCoy for many years to try to answer what it means to speak together, often finding that experience outstrips available modes of presentation and discourse. To these ends their work has adopted many methodological approaches: exhaustive categorization, recreation and reenactment, automation, miniaturization, and most recently remote viewing and speculative modeling. In New York City, his work has been exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, P.S.1, Postmasters Gallery, The Museum of Modern Art, The New Museum, and Smack Mellon. International exhibitions include projects at the Pompidou Center, the British Film Institute, ZKM, the Hanover Kunstverien, the Bonn Kunstverein, and F.A.C.T. (Liverpool, UK). Grants include a 2002 Creative Capital Grant for Emerging Fields, a 2005 Wired Rave Award, and a 2011 Guggenheim Fellowship. Articles about his work have appeared in Art in America, Artforum, Flash Art, Art News, The New York Times, The Washington Post and Newsweek. Residencies include work at the Headlands Center for the Arts, and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. His artwork is represented by in New York by Postmasters Gallery and in Geneva by Gallerie Guy Bartschi and can be seen in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and MUDAM in Luxembourg. In 2014 he co-founded monegraph.com a platform that uses the technology underlying Bitcoin to provide a mechanism for validating, owning and trading digital media assets. The project was presented at The New Museum as part of Rhizome's seven on seven conference and at Tech Crunch Disrupt in New York. His teaching engages both undergraduate and graduate students in studio art and related arts professions and addresses practical and theoretical uses of digital media technology together with surveys of related theoretical and philosophical texts.

Time is speeding up (2016, 11MB, 1:00 min) This is a beautiful piece, a distillation down to a minute of a three month installation by Ruth Catlow, artist and co-director of the marvellous Furtherfield. She explains its premise and construction better than I can, so I’ll hand over to her: This networked video performance and […]
running to catch a train (2016, 429MB, 9:07 min) I’m gently waking DVblog up to post this extraordinary piece of work from Paula Musgrove, with videography from Yasmin Cox (both year two Art & Design students at WSD where – transparency! – I currently teach.) The performance took place at the private view of the […]
For April, Sean and Derek look at three very different webcomics, each a standout in its own way. They begin with Der-shing Helmer's The Meek, the fantastical story of Angora, a young innocent -- even feral -- girl sent on a quest that could save her world. But Angora's isn't the only narrative thread making up this webcomic. We're also introduce to Luca deSadar and his family, rulers of the Northern Territories, and to Soli Areni, a mercenary with a secret to hide and whose jobs aren't always on the lawful side. In the first five chapters of this webcomic, Helmer subtly weaves these storylines together in a way that should become more pronounced as the narrative develops. Next, the guys check out O Human Star, a science fiction tale that's more about relationships and the way we choose to identify ourselves. Blue Delliquanti, its creator, deftly teases out her cast so that they're fully developed individuals whose lives, and dilemmas, become the scaffolding upon which everything rests. The world of O Human Star is a futuristic one, where robotics and artificial intelligence integrate almost seamlessly into human exchanges. And the boundaries between identities is not only limited to that between human and robot. Finally, Derek and Sean consider Stuart Campbell's These Memories Won't Last, a webcomic unlike anything else they've ever discussed. With the help of Lhasa Mencur (on sound design) and programmer Vitaliy Shirokiy, Campbell tells the story of his grandfather as he develops dementia. Whereas both The Meek and O Human Star contained layers of meaning, The Memories Won't Last is primarily defined by its visual layering. As the guys point out, Campbell and company layer the narration of the experience on top of the grandfather's actual story, and then these are overlaid with a ill-defined cloud that can obscure the visuals, much as the grandfather's growing dementia eats away at his memories. This is a short and poignant webcomic, and one that is nominated for a 2016 Webby Award in the NetArt category. And it's something you have to experience yourself to get the full effect.
In Whatever Time (2010, 290MB, 15 min.) “…Occupying a space somewhere between storytelling and spectacle, TV shows and advertisements, the video and sculpture installations of such invented personas as Cherry Bomb Fluffy White and Charley OnOff address the fragmented representations of politics and gender, autobiography and history in contemporary society. Jeff Crouse and Aaron Meyers present The World Series of 'Tubing at Eyebeam. An augmented reality card game, players compete against one another by selecting and presenting their "best" YouTube video clips. The audience then choose their favorite videos with a cleverly conceived audience response system using laser pointers. By blurring the distinctions between performer, audience, and participant, their work builds upon the inherent qualities of shared culture as it exists online. shot & edited by Emily Chen
This week a sick Duncan MacKenzie bumbles his way through a dramatic and sweeping discussion with Mark Napier. They speak of "Net Art," its less then stellar critics, and how we think about these new kinds of cultural products.Napier was an early pioneer of net art and is still charting it's future at Potatoland.org. His interview is followed by Terri and Joanna discussing the new book "Dirty Words: A Literary Encyclopedia of Sex" by Ellen Sussman. The intro is a gem.
