When everything goes smoothly, it's like, it's too easy, right? The aphorism that, you know, good judgment is the product of experience, but experience quite often is a lot of bad judgment and a lot of sort of uncomfortable or difficult circumstances. 10:35 Decided not to be a guide, became a photojournalist and storyteller for 35 years. 14:08 Exciting sailing journey leads to Antarctic expedition. 18:27 Since 1978, Jonathan has sold photos and stories in magazines. 19:52 Had a career in presenting slideshows in Australia, learned power of storytelling, moved away from climbing and photography. 24:36 Struggling to retrieve rope, dropped camera lens, still works. 28:21 Advancements in power sources for remote travel and photography, including lithium battery packs and solar panels, have made it easier to stay charged while on the move. These technologies have also influenced the capabilities of drones for capturing aerial photography. 30:18 Travel and technology have unavoidable carbon costs. 35:30 Passionate about landscape photography, finds power in nature, and emphasizes creating rather than just taking photos. Utilizes zoom lenses for convenience. 37:15 Staying safe and comfortable while working in the field. Good gear, fitness, and routines are important for photography in challenging conditions. Multiple bodies are useful for quick changes. 40:28 Favorite piece of outdoor gear under a hundred dollars: I always wanna make sure I'm well hydrated and have some decent gloves. 41:58 Favorite book: one of the best reading books about the history of the Antarctic peninsula is called The Storied Ice by Joan Booth. And there's a wonderful biography of Frank Hurley by a colleague of mine, Alistair McGregor. Frank Hurley, A Photographers Life. 40:46 Outdoor essentials: hydration, layered gloves for photography, multi-functional trekking pole. 45:19 The author discusses the importance of photo books and collaboration with a writer, encouraging others to publish. 46:11 Jonathan is excited about the new climbing book, The Art of Climbing, by an Australian, Simon Carter. Work is getting worse, and I take a few minutes to talk about it this week, and talk a little about me. I don't usually do this, but with the best of show coming up along with the 25th anniversary I felt I needed to address a few things. Digitalisation is a double-edged sword, presenting tremendous benefits as well as severe risks and complex novel challenges - all of which must be managed sustainably; with Simon Carter.

Our conversation in this episode with sustainability expert Simon Carter, the MD of Morphosis and chair of the Sustainable Digitalisation Project (SDP).Simon originally heralds from New Zealand, and as the son of an oceanographer was introduced early on to the appreciation of complex systems in nature and our interaction with and impact on them. His professional journey took him into a focus on the built environment as an architect, and these interests combined with a specialism in sustainability in both buildings and property markets. More recently he has developed expertise in ‘sustainable digitisation', an endeavour to address to rampant momentum to deploy digital technology to buildings and cities; setting an agenda to ensure it is done responsibly, ethically and sustainably.Simon is leading an industry, government and academia collaboration of sustainability, digital technology and social change leaders, the Sustainable Digitalisation Project, to establish this in Australia. The main pillars of this conversation are the influence and impact on our lives at every level of digital platforms and the shift towards digitising so many of our environments, interactions and endeavours. The critical and often decisive role of trust in enabling the effective deployment and use of these platforms, and how risk issues such as privacy, access to data and 3rd party use of data are compounding the further along this journey we go. How do leaders engage with this topic? What are the main mechanisms for managing risk in the context of digitisation and how can leaders make decisions and take action to ensure their organisation is engaging with their digitisation processes responsibly, ethically and sustainably. To answer these questions, listen on!Key out-takes from this episode;- Humankind is crossing a threshold into a highly digitised future.- This is a step-change in the evolution of our species that needs to be stewarded very carefully.- Digitisation offers tremendous benefits, many of which we are aware of but also presents severe risks and significant, complex and novel challenges.- One of the problems we face is a technology-driven mindset, with an expectation that any problem can be solved by technology - that any problem can be algorithmically solved.- Accept that trust is the oil that lubricates the digitised world. Consider what you are doing as a leader, and what your organisation is doing to measure and earn trust.- Organisations, cities and governments that focus on trust will out-compete over time.- Leaders & organisations must question their relationship to technology and put technology in its place as a tool.- This practice must occur both top-down and bottom-up, being led and delivered by leaders at all levels of organisations.Get in touch with Simon via any of these points of contact;LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/simoncarterprofile/Morphosis - http://www.morphosis.com.au/connectAdditional resources mentioned in our conversation.- The Sustainable Digitalisation Project (SDP) - www.sdp.digital- Centre for Responsible Technology www.centreforresponsibletechnology.org.au- Human Rights and Technology, Human Rights Commission https://tech.humanrights.gov.au- Morphosis publication, Crossing the Threshold – a primer for sustainable digitalisation real estate and cities, click here- World Economic Forum discussion between Klaus Swabb & Mark Benihoff on Trust in the 4th Industrial Revolution click hereAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for production of all audio recordings and composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper and the team at RadioHub studios for technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face.

Simon Carter is the creator of a unique software system called Predict BGL. Simon has type 1 diabetes and his daughter was also diagnosed with the disease at a young age. Frustrated by the primitive data collection methods and with his background in data analytics, Simon created a website so his daughters teachers could register her data in real time. He added an insulin dose calculator, then a future blood sugar prediction system. Eventually he offered the system to other parents of children with type 1 diabetes. They all loved it. This app now has over 7,000 users around the world.

If you want to hear invaluable insights on how to survive as a retailer and fashion brand for over 30 years this interview with Simon Carter, the founder of the famous men’s fashion brand of the same name, is for you.   He started off door knocking on The King’s Road in London selling men’s brooches. Today, he operates a multi-million pound global business with a presence in over 25 different countries. A huge achievement. Simon shares where his brand is positioned in the market, where his inspiration comes from, the setbacks he has had over the years and how he has overcome them plus his opportunities and challenges for the future. He even explains how he avoided using private equity or venture capital to fund his growth.   We really enjoyed hearing Simon’s experiences and hope you do too. He is unique. Even his choice of favourite business book is different, in fact he has never read one. He prefers to get inspiration from travel, figures from history and architecture. The closest thing to a business book he has read is Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek.   As for his favourite charity he likes the unsung, unglamorous organisations, most notably The Salvation Army.   You must make time to listen to this interview, it is really good.
