Watch This Episode On YouTubeOne of the things that fascinates me about filmmaking is the concept of authenticity. That is, the filmmakers either have to put in the time to do research for a particular film genre (veterans, ethnic films, etc) or they have to live it. For the new film BROTHERS AFTER WAR, my guest Jake Rademacher lived it. It's in his blood -- literally, as many of his siblings serve in the military. I felt honored to talk with a director who told veterans' stories so eloquently. Keep checking the BROTHERS AFTER WAR social media on when it'll be available for screening near you. And I hope you enjoy this episode with one of the most authentic voices for military veteran stories you'll ever hope to meet. In this episode, Jake and I discuss:how he created such a unique and genuine film series about his "brothers" -- both familial and military;how he created such an authentic film about war and after war;what made him decide to get into filmmaking and how he had the resilience to go into war zones with just a camera;advice he has for other documentary filmmakers -- "don't make a film during a global pandemic"; they were the first film back in Italy; "get a pen out, a piece of paper out, and ask yourself why you want to make yourself this film? and why do they need to see it?;his thoughts on the political response to Matthew Heineman's film RETROGRADE and how he handled his relationship with the DoD -- "I always have final cut";what did he leave out? where does it go too far for a cinéma vérité documentary filmmaker?would he consider making a narrative film? is documentary the best way to share veterans' stories?if he wants to turn it into a Richard Linklater BEFORE type series and what's next for him;how Christian filmmakers have inspired a model for veteran films.Jake's Indie Film Highlight: FIGHTING SPIRIT: A COMBAT CHAPLAIN'S JOURNEY (2024) dir. by Richard Hull; Justin RobertsLinks:Follow @brothersafterwar on InstagramBROTHERS AFTER WAR WebsiteSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content

There is no other filmmaker working today that personifies being the "man in the arena", as Theodore Roosevelt so eloquently put it, than Matthew Heineman. His films have ranged from the frontlines of wars to the sweet and touching portrayal of Jon Batiste in AMERICAN SYMPHONY (2023). Just making one such film could be a career pinnacle -- Matthew has directed 14 wholly original, extraordinary special artistic contributions to the medium -- and he's here to share the details. In this episode, we discuss:you don't just walk onto the stage of Radio City Music Hall, in a special operations team room, or in a emergency room during COVID -- these are remarkably unique places. How did he manage that?how he is comfortable in such a wide array of different topics;whether he would recommend his path (he says it's important to have a "curiosity about the world");how his first film, OUR TIME (2009) was in a way his film school;how he sees the difference between journalism and documentary;his process regarding trust between filmmaker and subject ("trust is everything"), and he talks about how he earned the trust for the closeups in AMERICAN SYMPHONY;the story behind the creation of AMERICAN SYMPHONY;his reaction to the whiplash of the media regarding its chances at the Oscars and how he views awards as a filmmaker; Matt talks movingly about his relationship with awards as his career has evolved;"why do we make art and who do we make art for are questions that we constantly need to be asking";his relationship with the art of filmmaking, his friendship with Roger Deakins, and the importance of sound;what's next for one of the most talented filmmakers we have in both the narrative and documentary world and how he is able to toggle between both successfully.Matt's Indie Film Highlight: MURDERBALL (2005) dir. by Dana Adam Shapiro; Henry-Alex Rubin; SHERMAN'S MARCH (1986) dir. by Ross McElweeLinks:Our Time ProjectsFollow Matthew on InstagramSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content

The documentary follows Jon in early 2022, when he finds himself celebrated with 11 Grammy nominations, including album of the year. Amid that triumph, Jon is immersed in his most ambitious challenge yet: composing an original symphony for a performance at the storied Carnegie Hall. However, this extraordinary trajectory is upended when Jon's life partner, NYT bestselling author and Emmy Award-winning journalist Suleika Jaouad, learns that her long-dormant cancer has returned. Jon's latest studio album, “World Music Radio” draws inspiration from his mission to create community and expand culture with the power of music. The album received widespread critical acclaim for its universal message and genre-defying sound, hailed by the Associated Press as “a mesmerizing way to dial into Batiste's eclectic and wide musicality.”  His 2021 studio album, “We Are,” was nominated for 11 Grammy Awards across seven different categories, a first in Grammy history. He went on to win five Grammy Awards that evening, including the coveted “Album of the Year.” Batiste composed and performed music for the Disney/Pixar film "Soul,” for which he won an Academy Award for Best Original Score alongside Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. He is the second Black composer in history to win an Academy Award for composition. “Soul” also earned Batiste a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a NAACP Image Award and a Critic's Choice Award.  From 2015-2022, Batiste served as the bandleader and musical director of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Born and raised in New Orleans, Batiste received both a B.A. and M.F.A. at the world-renowned Juilliard School in NYC.

My guest today is Baktash Ahadi. Baktash is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, speaker, facilitator, and human rights activist. Baktash is a returning guest and if you have not yet listened to my first conversation with him, I highly recommend taking time to listen to Episode 84, where Baktash shared pieces of his and his family's story of escaping Afghanistan as refugees when he was just a baby, getting resettled as a young boy in Carlisle Pennsylvania, and how that journey has impacted his life. I asked Baktash if he would come back to talk specifically about the film, Retrograde, of which he is an Executive Producer.  Retrograde tells the story of the American withdraw from Afghanistan in 2021.  Sponsored by National Geographic, what started with the intention of telling the story of the American Green Berets who served in Afghanistan, pivoted in May of 2021, when President Biden announced the withdraw of American troops, which built up to the major withdrawal and the takeover of the Afghan government by the Taliban on August 15, 2021. From Wikipedia: “Retrograde is a 2022 American documentary film that covers events that took place during the final nine months of the United States' 20-year war in Afghanistan. The film includes actions taken by the last American Special Forces units stationed there, Sami Sadat, a young Afghan general and his troops defending their country, and a chaotic exodus of its civilians, desperate to flee a country that will once again be controlled by the Taliban.” The footage that was captured in the making of this film is incredible, to say the least.  As I watched, I often was wondering, “how did they get this footage?”  So, that is among many other aspects that Baktash tells us about today. We also talk about what we as individuals can do today to make a positive difference in the continued story of Afghan refugees and Veterans of the war.   Retrograde is available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.  It is produced by Matthew Heineman and Caitlin McNally.  More of Baktash's work can be found at baktashahadi.org.Make Life Less Difficult

“The pivot”. It is one of the most talked about topics among documentary filmmakers. And for good reason. An unpredictable and ever-changing world can render the best laid plans obsolete and wreak havoc for filmmakers. In the course of making his urgent new documentary “Retrograde”, Matthew Heineman (“City of Ghosts”, “Cartel Land”) found himself facing a doozy of a pivot. After years of persistence, he and his team had finally gotten permission to embed with a group of U.S. Army Green Berets stationed in Afghanistan, only to encounter, with the U.S. pullout of all of its troops, a story without any characters. But when the U.S. Special Forces left, Matthew pivoted to the even more dramatic story of an Afghan general trying desperately to lead his troops and defend his crumbling nation against the fast-encroaching Taliban.   Joining Ken on “Top Docs”, Matthew discusses how he navigated this major shift and also sheds light on his distinctive approach to documentary storytelling. Why does Matthew intentionally exclude context from his films, believing that this creates a much more visceral and emotional impact? How did Matthew and the film's other cinematographers manage to capture moments of great intensity without, in certain situations, understanding what was being said? And, up against a stroke of extraordinary bad luck, how did Matthew reconceive the film's final scene in such a way to make the film's ending even more powerful than he could have imagined. Thank goodness for the pivot.   “Retrograde”, released by National Geographic Documentary Films, is available now for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.   Follow: @topdocspod on Instagram and twitter @mheineman on Instagram and @MattHeineman on twitter   Hidden Gem: Murderball   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

Matthew Heineman's RETROGRADE captures the final nine months of America's 20-year war in Afghanistan from multiple perspectives: one of the last U.S. Special Forces units deployed there, a young Afghan general and his corps fighting to defend their homeland against all odds, and the civilians desperately attempting to flee as the country collapses and the Taliban take over. From rarely seen operational control rooms to the frontlines of battle to the chaotic Kabul airport during the final U.S. withdrawal, Oscar-nominated and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Matthew Heineman's latest film offers a cinematic and historic window onto the end of America's longest war, and the costs endured for those most intimately involved. Matthew Heineman (Cartel Land, City of Ghosts, The First Wave) joins us for a conversation on why he was determined to eschew the macro politics of the 20-year old war and boar in on the human cost, tribulations and vanishing compassion facing so many innocent people desperately looking for a way out of unfathomable chaos and the level of risk he and his crew the risk had to navigate. Two years on from the start of the global Covid pandemic, we reflect on artistic reflections from across the arts, and the power of human resilience. On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organisation declared Covid-19 a pandemic, and since then over six million lives have been lost. The world as we knew it has changed. Documentary-maker Matthew Heineman reflects on filming the unfolding health crisis. In March 2020, as New York shut down, he embedded himself in one of America's hardest-hit hospitals, and for four months filmed medical staff, essential worker patients, and families as they battled with the virus. His Oscar shortlisted film, The First Wave, documents the harsh realities of the early pandemic, and the terrible inequalities - but also the incredible strength of the human spirit. Hollywood's Andrew Garfield on an actor's life silenced during lockdown. The pandemic has had a huge impact on the arts: bringing productions to a halt, closing theatres, cinemas, and live music, and leaving artists without means to perform. It closed down film productions, including Oscar-nominated tick, tick…BOOM! Days into filming, lead actor - the award-winning British-American Andrew Garfield - suddenly found himself alone, without cast or crew to play to. Andrew talks to the BBC's Anna Bailey about how he kept going in those quiet times, got back into filming, and is now up for an Oscar. Plus, writer Ilaria Bernardini considers the Italian people's cultural response. Italy was the first country in Europe to be overwhelmed by the virus, the first in the world to shut down, and one of the slowest to reopen. During those first weeks of lockdown, the people of Italy united to keep their spirits up, and moving musical performances from balconies went viral. Two years on - from her home in Milan and with Italy still in a State of Emergency - writer Ilaria Bernardini reflects on life under strict lockdown, how artists brought hope in those uncertain times, and the changes she's seen since. And the Zimbabwean artist sharing health messages through his sculptures. When the pandemic hit, artist, sculptor, and lawyer David Ngwerume decided he could help - through art. He tells us about his stone sculptures of people wearing masks and having vaccines - sculptures he hopes can help stem the spread of Covid, in a part of the world where vaccination rates are low. Academy Award-nominated director Matthew Heineman's (“Cartel Land”, “City of Ghosts”) harrowing new cinema verité documentary, THE FIRST WAVE, takes us into the eye of the storm, a New York City intensive care unit during the worst four months of the COVID-19 crisis. Trailing a relentlessly driven medical team led by the remarkable Dr. Nathalie Dougé and spending countless hours with desperately sick patients and their families, Heineman and his crew are there to document this unfathomable terror inside the hospital, but, also, stories of hope, too, and even moments of pure joy. What was it like to film during the early days of the pandemic when “safety protocols” were being created on the fly? How did the glint in the eye of an intubated patient provide a clue that an unforgettable relationship would develop between the patient and the medical staff? And in what ways did the events following George Floyd's murder make the connection between the worlds inside and outside the hospital?
