Eric Kim has a signature style with his writing, which has appeared frequently in the New York Times, where he is a columnist for the magazine. Eric blends a truly lyrical style of prose with deep reporting chops and a knack for simple and highly focused recipe development—a rare triple threat! He's also the author of the best-selling cookbook Korean American. This is a return visit to the show for Eric, and we talk about his reporting process, how he unpacks big topics in food and culture in his columns, and some of his recent work, including dumplings, Chicago pizza, the origins of Philadelphia cream cheese, and many other memorable stories. Also on the show, it's the return of Three Things, where Aliza and Matt share what's interesting in the world of restaurants, books, television, food products, and much more. Join us for this episode where Phillip and David are joined by Jamie Jacobsen of Tedious & Brief, who's music and convo is certainly not the former, and you won't want it to be the latter. As is typical for the artists we bring on, Tedious & Brief's music is hard to categorize. They refer to it as "crispy jams" and we love their synth pop sensibilities with clever and genuine lyrics that are extremely relatable. But most of all, they just keep producing banger after banger since their original smash "Papercuts" back in 2019 (which we will share a tremendous live recording of from Musikfest 2022).Website: tediousandbriefmusic.comYouTube ChannelSpotify ChannelBandcamp - T&B Audiotree sessionsThank you so much to Audiotree for the amazing recordings of Tedious & Brief. It was so great to share them!BioJamie Jacobsen is an indie pop songwriter who heads up the groovy, slickly produced project Tedious & Brief. Jacobsen took up guitar and songwriting at a young age. She has mentioned her earliest influences include Stevie Ray Vaughn and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which has evolved into a more polished sound featuring airy synth elements and vocals akin to Maggie Rogers or Lorde. Her debut single “Papercuts”, set the mood for the rest of Tedious & Brief's debut self-titled EP. They have also released a live album featuring their performance on Audiotree live and several singles, including “Not That Deep”, “Middle Class” and most recently “Tired Work”.Thank you to Carver Commodore, argonaut&wasp, and Blair Crimmins for allowing us to use their music in the show open and close. In this episode of “It's Not That Deep,” co-hosts Olivia Estright and Phoebe Cykosky are on a mission to cook a meal for a panel of three judges (The Daily Collegian staffers and friends). The two decide to make a pesto pasta dish with a side of artisan-style bread. In the cooking process, Cykosky overcomes her fear of touching raw chicken, and Estright nearly burns the bread. Food critic and “It's Not That Deep” producer Alex Osman describes the final dish as “serviceable.”
In 2023, “It's Not That Deep” co-hosts Olivia Estright and Phoebe Cykosky plan to leave plenty of their issues and struggles behind. In their usual fashion, Estright and Cykosky took submissions from viewers on what struggles they plan to leave behind in 2022. The podcast duo then wrote all of the submissions on plates as a way to physically represent everything their viewers deal with. By the end of the episode, the co-hosts head outside and smash the plates as a symbol of them “breaking up” with 2022. With the new year comes a new dedication to self-love and personal growth for the podcasters and their viewers.
The “It's Not That Deep” duo (and their unsolicited advice) is back in the HUB-Robeson Center. This week, co-hosts Olivia Estright and Phoebe Cykosky ask the Penn State population about their plans for Valentine's Day. They also encourage passing students to share dating pitches to the world. From the four people who are brave enough to talk to the “It's Not That Deep” crew, it's clear that love is in the air.
A proper work-life balance? Never heard of her. Well, that's probably not what students want to hear when seeking personal life advice, but it's what “It's Not That Deep” co-hosts Olivia Estright and Phoebe Cykosky are able to offer. The duo took to the HUB-Robeson Center to share similar unsolicited advice to their fellow Penn Staters. Work-life balance wasn't the only thing discussed, with topics ranging from personal relationships to schoolwork. But at the end of the day, this advice may not be the best route because it's not that deep.

Another year is coming to a close, and like everyone else in the world, I'll say, "Where has the time gone?" The days are long, but the years are short. I am so thankful for all that 2022 was and how many lessons I learned. Join me as we reflect back and share some insight into how this year changed me for the better. 22 Lessons I Learned in 2022 Listen to this week's episode of the Self-Starter Podcast to hear all 22 lessons. But the overall themes for this year were very similar. Here are the basics of what I learned. Maybe you need to hear this too! You CAN do the things you've always wanted to. Living your dream life doesn't mean living the perfect life. There is always room for improvement, but that doesn't mean you can't be happy and enjoy right now. Rest is productive. My achievements are not the best thing about me. Thank you for following along on this journey. It means the world to me that you support this podcast! The “It's Not That Deep” podcast has reached its season finale for this fall semester. Co-hosts Phoebe Cykosky and Olivia Estright reflect on their semesters and describe what their finals weeks are going to look like. Cykosky brings a point to the conversation, saying how classes actually related to your major “are that deep,” meaning they're important. Her co-host Estright agrees. Besides the topic of finals and the end of the semester, the duo also have an in-depth conversation about one of their top shows right now, the Netflix series “BoJack Horseman,” and how they think they can relate it to their day-to-day life.
Co-hosts Phoebe Cykosky and Olivia Estright are back for another edition of the “It's Not That Deep” podcast. The duo covers a wide range of topics in this episode, from sporting events to the World Cup to “cuffing” season. Cykosky and Estright take the time to put into perspective how important it is to not let your emotions get the best of you and not take everything you see on social media to heart because, at the end of the day, it's not that deep.

Keeping friendships in college can be tough, and “It's Not That Deep” co-hosts Olivia Estright and Phoebe Cykosky address this view in this episode. The duo returns to viewer submissions for this video, and they both apply their own insight to others' “It's Not That Deep” moments. Friendship is a big theme in this episode, with Estright and Cykosky using their own experiences to help others. Estright also makes note of the difficulty of keeping friendships throughout college due to the rapid changes throughout one's four years. But, she says it's OK for those friendships to change and even drop, because at the end of the day, it's not that deep.
This week, I chat with my brother Josh Reyes. Josh is a Real Estate broker currently working at Remax (formerly Blue Panda at the time of recording). Josh has been voted the #1 social media realtor in Ottawa many times, and for good reason. Follow him on IG and you'll see a dude who makes real estate actually interesting and realistic for millennials. In fact, his social media presence is so strong that he actually became MY real estate agent and helped me secure my first property last year! In this episode, we talk all about real estate, social media, and realising potential in all areas of life. We had the pleasure of interviewing ari hicks over Zoom video.ari's furious feminist energy is palpable, flaunting her genre-spanning style as she ricochets between themes of empowerment and bravado, giving listeners a first glance at ari entering her Villain Era as she pays homage to the death of a male centric narrative. Showcasing a different dimension of the pop singer, this Chapter acts as the start of her newest era. Featuring three brand new tracks as well as familiar favorites “Romeo Dies”, “Sucker”, “Shut Up" and “Look Pretty”. We start off with the self-assertive pop anthem “Two Sides” followed by “Pull your Tooth” and “Jaded”, giving the euphoric darker sound and get-under-your-skin lyrics to end the chapter on an edgier note, offering listeners a more haunting glimpse into Chapter 2. “It's Not That Deep: Chapter 1 follows ari hicks's 2020 Kiss Me, Kill Me EP, which introduced the world to her halloween hit “Kiss Me, Kill Me” Since then, the dark pop siren has firmly proved herself as a top artist to watch this year. Reigning as a Live Nation's “Ones to Watch 2022” with nearly 200k TikTok followers and earning acclaim from the likes of Wonderland, Vogue, ALT Press and many more. Consider this an honest and bold storybook about unapologetically stepping into your power, It's Not That Deep is an all encompassing soundtrack of entering your Villain Era. Each Chapter a collage of stories and experiences that were derived to hone in on the concept of reclaiming your power. On the release, ari confides, “Chapter 1: My forthcoming album “It's Not That Deep” is an all encompassing soundtrack of entering your Villain Era. Each Chapter a collage of stories and experiences that were derived to hone in on the concept of reclaiming your power. Chapter 1 really embodies a lighter energy, its a little petty, a little savage but its FUN. It's tapping into your feminine energy and taking these cookie cutter stories and giving them a bit of a plot twist, because why shouldn't girls have their fun? Sonically and visually I aligned and designed each of these tracks with main character energy (hence why they all have an actual character). These tracks are for the brats, the girls that feel silenced, the ones that are entering their villain era selflessly or selfishly - I want this Chapter to be the voice for that.”This episode is sponsored by American Musical Supply.
