Men grow up hearing that they need to be as emotional as a rock—never letting their guard down, never baring their heart and soul. And while it's true that we are called to be strong in our faith and brave in the face of danger, we are also called to show love, compassion, empathy, and even sorrow. Join John and his guest, Jake Khym, for a vulnerable conversation about identity, surrender, and what it means to live as a beloved son of God. True masculinity isn't about being a hero or having it all together—it's about authenticity, humility, and the courage to face our fears. Stop pretending and start living. Take off the mask of worldly masculinity and live in the beauty of God's love. This week, Jake and Bob return to an important topic: the healing power of forgiveness. Both Jake and Bob have encountered forgiveness and mercy in their healing journeys and share personal stories about receiving forgiveness and forgiving others. They also discuss why forgiving and forgetting is not possible, how to know if you've truly forgiven someone, and how our memories are transformed through the process of forgiveness.    Key Points: Forgiveness is essential for healing and spiritual growth Trust is often lost in areas where we have been wounded Fear often surrounds these areas where we have lost trust  Forgiveness can transform pain into compassion Unforgiveness hardens our hearts and reduces our ability to receive the love God desires to pour into us Memories can be purified through the process of forgiveness Sin not only wounds those we hurt but also ourselves It is important to also forgive ourselves   Resources: Identity Course by Jake Khym (use this link to get 10% off) Trusting Our Father's Provision by Dr. Bob Schuchts Healing Prayers Booklet   Connect with Restore the Glory:  Instagram: @restoretheglorypodcast  Twitter: @RestoreGloryPod Facebook: Restore the Glory Podcast   Never miss out on an episode by hitting the subscribe button right now! In this episode, we talk about how we can receive graces by making a spiritual pilgrimage to Nazareth. We reflect on the Holy Family, how they teach us to love well, and how they show us how to build a family that heals and transforms its members. We also discuss the sanctification of the ordinary, how life is found in doing our daily duty well, and how to dialogue with others. Nazareth is a place of love, and we invite you to use your imagination and make the journey with us.    Heather's One Thing - Discovering your God-given Identity Course  Heather's Other One Thing - Memorize Scripture by Jackie Angel Sister Miriam's One Thing - Last Paragraph of Pope Benedict XVI's Inaugural Homily Michelle's One Thing - Everyone who experienced the loss of home from a natural disaster. How can I experience Nazareth in an ordinary way? Where do I need to be transformed in family life? Spend time this week meditating on life in Nazareth. How did I encounter the Holy Family in my meditation? When are the times that I want to rebuke and accuse others? Do I want holiness and transformation more than being right?   Discussion Questions: What renewal and transformation do you need to experience in Nazareth? How do you see ordinary life as the path to sanctification? How do you see ordinary life as an obstacle to sanctification? Where are you in bondage within family life? How can you allow an encounter of Nazareth to set you free from that bondage?   Quote to Ponder: “Pilgrimages are a call to return to the roots of our faith. Nazareth, where Jesus lived His hidden life, is a place that invites us to reflect on our own journey. It is not only a place of memory but also a place of renewal and transformation.” (Pope Francis, Homily, Mass at the Basilica of the Annunciation, 2014)   Scripture for Lectio: “And he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. In this episode, I address a controversial clip from episode 79 of the Restore the Glory podcast, in which host Jake Khym provides an example of how he brings Jesus into his own parts work. I explain the potential issues I see with bringing God into human formation work. Then, I dive into the seven reasons why I initially focus on the natural realm: 1) Almost no one else focuses on human formation grounded in a Catholic understanding of the human person; 2) Human formation is the basis of all formation, according to St. John Paul II; 3) There is a huge wealth of information from secular sources that I can and should bring to the Church; 4) So many spiritual problems are spiritual consequences of human formation deficits; 5) My training and experience are in human formation, not spiritual formation; 6) Natural means are primarily used for the early development of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers; 7) Explicitly God-centric approaches are not optimal for every part in every person, and may even be harmful in some cases.

In a recent conversation, Jake had an image come to mind of planets revolving around the sun, except instead of planets they were people, and instead of the sun, Jesus was at the centre of everything. Jake and Brett spend the episode breaking open that analogy and putting into perspective why saying that ‘you're not the centre of the universe' is an invitation to a rightly-ordered life rather than a judgement.    Guiding Quote:   “You are not the centre of the universe” - Jake Khym   Key Points   We're taking a break from episodes this summer and will return in September with Season 12 Jake shares an image of the universe revolving around Jesus How ‘you're not the centre of the universe' is an invitation to right order and peace rather than judgement The role of distrust and fear when we place ourselves at the centre of the universe An historical lens for our big life questions Jake and Brett speculate on the genuine reasons we put ourselves at the centre of the universe How pride, vanity and sensuality are paths that we try to be okay, and make ‘it' (life) okay   Discussion Questions   What stood out to you in this episode? What are you looking for in life?  What are the expectations you have of God? Do you hear the phrase, ‘You're not the centre of the universe' as a judgement or with relief? Why? A few months ago I sent an email to a number of practitioners I admire and asked them if they would be willing to share their wisdom about the following: What lessons have clients taught you about healing? What is something you have changed your mind about when it comes to healing, working with clients, or your own transformation process? If you were to start your own healing journey over again, what would you do differently? What is one thing you wish your clients believed about themselves? What is one thing you wish your clients believed about the healing process? I received some wonderful responses from Kim D'Eramo, Alan Davidson, Jondi Whitis, Robin Bilazarian, Kris Ferraro, Gwyneth Moss, Deborah D Miller, Jake Khym, Tania A Prince, Ange Finn, Nancy Forester, Peta Stapleton, Julie Schiffman, Steve Wells, and Mary Ayers. There wasn’t the time in that particular interview for him to go into detail about this idea, but I was fascinated and needed to hear more. So this week's podcast is exactly that. Jake takes the time to explain how he approaches love as a skill, the four parts of the skill that we can improve, and specifically how we can improve at loving. Many of the practitioners I know are very spiritual people, but for one reason or another they are not connected to a particular denomination or faith tradition. My friend Jake Khym is a different in that regard. He explicitly does Christian counseling. In this conversation we talk about how and why he transitioned from traditional counseling to Christian counseling and how his work now looks different. Also, we spend a great deal of time talking about what it means to provide instruction and teaching in a discipleship relationship vs. what a therapist would normally do. Even if you are not Christian you are going to find this to be a fascinating conversation. Jake is one of the brights and most articulate people I know. His insights in to how people transform and what people are longing for are insightful and will help you with your healing journey regardless how you approach spiritually, faith, or religion.
