First, some short quotations including one from Lord Byron, who famously praised the city for its ‘oranges and women’ and another from Jan Morris who wrote more poetically of the air which was ‘heavy with jasmine and orange blossom’. Then, time is devoted to writers of longer accounts. Enjoy hearing, for example, about Richard Ford’s ‘Handbook for Travellers in Spain’, written in the 1830s, Laurie Lee’s account of walking through Andalucia in the 1930’s and the writings of Jason Webster and Edward Lewine whose more recent travelogues focus respectively on a search for the country’s Arabic roots and its bullfighting tradition. https://www.citybreakspodcast.co.uk

Rana Mitter talks to Jason Webster, Ed Morales, Iain Sinclair and Iwona Blazwick, about the shifting concepts of identity in the Ibero-Latin world, from the days before Spain was a single Spain, through the indigenous and the artistic of South America, to the multiplicity of ethnic and cultural identities represented in the US by the neologism "Latinx".
In this episode we are delighted to speak with two leaders form the Pepsico business, from the Tingalpa snack foods facility in Queensland, where they are having great success in extending flexible work options to their shift based teams. Instilling a flexible work culture has been a journey for Pepsico across all their functions, and they have pretty much nailed it, with their ‘One Simple thing’ approach to conversations around flexible work requests earning them a WGEA Employer of Choice Citation this year. Jason Webster, Senior Supply Chain Leader and Plant Manager at Tingalpa and Stephanie Ridge, HR Manager for the site, share their approach to flexibility on site and give examples of how well it is working for their people and their operation. At NAWO we are passionate about Flexibility because we know it is a key enabler of increasing female participation in the workplace, however what is beautiful about enabling flexibility in your workplace is it benefits everyone, regardless of gender and the Pepsico example really demonstrates this. Attracting a diverse workforce to shift based teams requires businesses to look critically at the overall package they are provide to employees, to attract them into the business and retain them. Pepsico’s experience proves that shift work can provide very interesting opportunities for flexibility if there is a willingness to consider different models, think laterally and invest in skills development across teams. Key Learnings: A workplace culture of trust is a pre-requisite to successful implementation of flexible work Principle-based leadership and reference to clear principles directly applicable to flexible work requests is vital as the foundation for encouraging requests for flexible work and having open and honest conversations about how they can be accommodated An investment in cross training/skills development for front line team members is integral to enabling flexible options Positive role modelling of the behaviours around flexibility, in line with principles, from leaders is extremely important Clearly articulating the level of flexibility that can be enabled for particular roles and job classifications (e.g low, moderate and high flex roles) manages expectations from the outset There are huge benefits to implementing this approach to flexible work for sites with long tenure in regard to transition to retirement Extending opportunities for flexibility beyond traditional parameters (i.e. part time or casual work for mothers returning from leave) provides enormous retention opportunities for all employees (studying, transitioning to retirement, sporting commitments, parenting, elder care, commuting problems, faith etc) Attached here is a Linked In article I have written reflecting on principle-based leadership - what it is and why it matters and a short slide deck providing some example principles specific to enabling flexibility. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/principle-based-leadership-what-why-matters-louise-weine/

In 1941, Catalonian chicken farmer Juan Pujol made an unlikely leap into the world of international espionage, becoming a spy first for the Germans, then for the British, and rising to become one of the greatest double agents of World War II. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe Pujol's astonishing talent for deceiving the Nazis, which led one colleague to call him "the best actor in the world." We'll also contemplate a floating Chicago and puzzle over a winding walkway. Intro: In 1999, Kevin Baugh declared his Nevada house an independent republic. Spain's current economic crisis is seeing the return of flamenco as a form of protest. Jason Webster explores its history.
Jason Webster is an Anglo-American crime novelist, travel writer and critic. Born in California he now lives in Valencia, Spain. Webster was educated in England, Egypt and Italy. In 1993 he graduated from Oxford University (St John's College) with a degree in Arabic and Islamic History. His books all involve Spain, and include Duende: A journey in search of Flamenco (2003), which recounts his move here, and his quest to learn flamenco guitar, (it was long-listed for the Guardian First Book Award); Andalus: Unlocking the secrets of Moorish Spain (2004) and Sacred Sierra: A year on a Spanish mountain (2009) which describes a year that Webster and his Spanish wife spent living on their mountain farm in eastern Spain working on the land and planting trees with the help of a 12th century Moorish gardening manual. Or the Bull Kills You (2011) is a crime novel set in Valencia, and the world of bullfighting. It is the first in a series of detective stories featuring Chief Inspector Max Cámara of the Spanish National Police. It was long-listed for the Crime Writers' Association John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger. Death in Valencia (2012), is the second book in the series. I caught up with Jason recently in Valencia. We met at a sidewalk cafe in the Cabanyal - the neighbourhood in which his fictional action takes place - to talk about how those who read and love his novels can get more out of them by visiting this great, colourful Spanish city.
