According to AARP over 44% of Americans ages 40-59 are considered obese, and for adults over 60 that number is around 42%. Hormone changes can cause fat accumulation, especially in our midsections, and that collides with age-related muscle loss, which means our bodies don't burn calories or process sugar as efficiently. Then, of course, comes the expected cascade of possible health complications associated with the extra weight. I don't want this to sound bleak, and the purpose in me sharing these statistics is to say that we CAN change the narrative. It is possible, and it is never too late. When Joan MacDonald received some unwelcome health news from her doctor, she knew that she had to make some changes. With guidance from her fitness guru daughter, Michelle MacDonald, Joan began her own health and fitness journey, in her seventies, to go on to inspire many others to do the same through her Train With Joan platform. Not only are grateful women re-discovering themselves and getting their lives back, but they are becoming a part of a greater community of support and friendship.Joan has become a major fitness influencer with almost 2 million followers on social media, and she has authored her memoir and self-help book, Flex Your Age: Defy Stereotypes and Reclaim Empowerment. Korean drama, or K-drama, is enjoying phenomenal worldwide success. Thanks to video-on-demand streaming - and given a boost by the pandemic - South Korea is now one of the largest content providers in the world. In this edition of The Cultural Frontline actress Min-ha Kim, who stars as Sunja in the adaptation of the best-selling historical novel Pachinko, explores the worldwide impact of K-drama and speaks to writers, actors and producers about how it is evolving. K-drama fans come from all over the world, says Deema Abu Naser who runs the biggest K-drama community on Instagram, @deemalovesdrama. She was recently invited to visit film locations in Korea by Jeanie Chang, who posts about K-drama and mental health as @noonasnoonchi. But will K-drama's new international audience change it for better or worse? Now that many dramas are being shared internationally on streaming platforms, they are changing, says Forbes K-drama critic Joan MacDonald. Squid Game made the world sit up and notice K-dramas - but they were already gaining popularity. Most Korean dramas are made to be watched by the whole family, and that is part of their worldwide appeal. Korean cinema, on the other hand, was always aimed at an adult audience. Korean script writer Hong Eun-mi tells Min-ha that the gap between K-drama and cinema has narrowed - the pandemic led to a slump in the film industry and now many writers and producers are working in K-drama instead. Another Korean innovation, webtoons - comics designed to be read vertically on a smartphone – have become a primary source for K-dramas. Some have millions of fans and are published globally, acting as a sort of barometer for any drama reversion, says Minyoung Alissia Hong, an executive at Korean media company Kakao Entertainment. She saw the potential early on and first suggested turning the webtoon What's wrong with Secretary Kim? into a drama. Itaewon Class soon followed and was a huge success. K-dramas are also being remade in other countries - screenwriter Melis Veziroglu Yilmaz adapts Korean dramas for Turkish TV and says there are many parallels between Turkish and Korean culture. She hopes K-drama will remain family-friendly. Actress and singer Uhm Jung-hwa welcomes the changes. She recently starred in Doctor Cha, a drama about a middle-aged woman who decides to go back and finish her medical training after 20 years of looking after her family. Uhm Jung-hwa says roles for women have become more interesting since she first started out in the ‘90s, and pre-production has also improved the quality of K-dramas. Is it still possible to get in the best shape of your life? Joan MacDonald says yes. Five years ago, at 70, she wasn't and was dealing with multiple heath challenges. But a dare from her daughter Michelle, a personal trainer, to train with her set her on a path toward fitness. Now 75, Joan is in a dramatically different place - much happier, healthier and more energetic. And she's an inspiration for others to make the changes they want to make, with over 1.7 million followers on Instagram at @trainwithjoan. Joan & Michelle MacDonald join us from Tulum, Mexico to discuss their book Flex Your Age. _________________________ My next Design Your New Life in Retirement small group program starts in April: Learn More Very Early Bird offers through March 1st _________________________ Bios Joan MacDonald (@trainwithjoan) is a 75-year-old Instagram fitness influencer who's undergone a remarkable change in the last five years. She was on medication for high blood pressure and acid reflux; she had terrible edema in her ankles; her arthritis was extremely painful; and she had difficulty walking up and down stairs. Joan knew that if she continued on an unhealthy path that it might mean more health issues and more medications—and probably force her to move into a nursing home. But with the help of her daughter, Michelle, and The Wonder Women community, Joan was able to do much more than change her journey—she was able to help others on theirs.  Michelle MacDonald (@yourhealthyhedonista) has been coaching women since 2012, beginning with athletes getting ready for competition on the natural bodybuilding stage. She also started coaching women who wanted to have a major lifestyle change, working with them in what she terms “transformation groups.” These groups became so successful that Michelle couldn't keep up with the demand and created a team of coaches for a program called The Wonder Women, which focuses on women's health and fitness. Michelle's most well-known client is, of course, her mom, Joan.___________________________ For More on Joan and Michelle MacDonald TrainwithJoan Flex Your Age: Defy Stereotypes and Reclaim Empowerment by Joan MacDonald with Michelle MacDonald The Wonder Women ___________________________ Podcast Episodes You May Like The Joy Of Movement - Kelly McGonigal The Joy Choice – Dr. Michelle Segar Move - The New Science of Body Over Mind - Caroline Williams How to Get Stronger After 50 – Dave Durell ___________________________ Wise Quotes Michelle MacDonald On Beyond Dieting "I think the difference, the real big thing, is the community and the athlete mindset. So getting clients off of that diet. They just want to lose weight, they just want to see the scale go down. Well, let's talk about training, and get excited about that. Let's get excited about the, how you're putting meals together. So we teach macros. We're not giving them this meal plan. We instead encourage them to craft their own meals, but following what protein, carbs and fat they want to aim at to have more balanced blood sugar. And so it's this really amazing journey. And the the outcome is that the clients are  empowered, they're educated, there's a lot of self pride and there's a lot of great bonding and great community. And so even after they stop the coaching, they continue to stay in touch. They still have their own chat groups. Some of clients have these Slack groups where they're on Slack together, it's incredible. And they get together and go on holidays and it's amazing. I love it."   On Coaching Her Mother Joan MacDonald "I used to have a story in my head that I wasn't patient, but I was so invested in my Mom's success. Getting her to get healthy again was of such paramount importance. My Mom was a fabulous mother. She spent a lot of time with me when I was young. Mother and daughter Michelle and Joan MacDonald are using tech to inspire, motivate and to change lives - and they're focused on a part of the population that has been rather ignored and invisible online - women in their 40s and 50s. But that's not the most incredible thing about this pair. It was daughter Michelle MacDonald's own ahead- of-the-curve use of technology for coaching and training older women that helped her mother change her life in the first place - resulting in Joan being dubbed, at 76, the 'Baby Boomer Fitness Influencer'.**Please subscribe, rate and review if you enjoy the podcast**Find Joan MacDonald @trainwithjoan on Instagram, on Facebook, and YouTube - and her journal is on her website. Our guest today has been the most anticipated so far. When I announced that Joan McDonald of Train With Joan is joining us for this podcast recording, the response was overwhelming. Everyone loves Joan! With over a million and a half fans on Instagram, Joan is rockin life in her 70s. But it wasn't always that way. Joan is now 75 years old, but only 5 years ago was on medication for high blood pressure and acid reflux, had terrible edema in her ankles, her arthritis was extremely painful, and she couldn't even walk up and down stairs without having a hard time. She was tired, emotional, and desperate for a change. Then one day her daughter Michelle, who is outright amazing herself, came to her in tears and told her mom that she had to make a choice. She said that if she continued on this path she was on she'd end up even worse off, and probably on even more medication. And then, in true mother daughter style, she asked her mom to start training with her. Michelle is a professional body builder and knew exactly how to take care of her mom. And luckily Joan said yes. Five years later, here we have a brand new Joan full of vitality and strength looking forward to her future and inspiring millions of people to do the same. She's showing us that there are no limits, no boundaries and we can make a new life, a new body, a new mind and a new outlook on life no matter how old you are. So, today we are going to learn how Joan did it and what it takes to reverse the body clock. Starting February 28, 2022 - It's Never Too Late 6 Week Challenge. Hurry and sign up here! Joan MacDonald, a 73-year-old Canadian, is now a famous fitness Instagram personality with over 500,000 followers. Three years ago, MacDonald was overweight and in poor health. She was on medication to treat conditions like high blood pressure, acid reflux, and high cholesterol. As she aged, she began to have more physical problems. MacDonald's daughter, Michelle, convinced her to change her lifestyle and taught her some exercises and healthy eating habits. After more than six months, MacDonald lost around 28 kilograms and was able to stop using her medication. She started to feel better physically and gained more self-confidence. MacDonald credits her transformation to the exercise and diet tips that she learned from her daughter. Her fitness regimen includes going to the gym, where she lifts weights and does 15- to 30-minute cardio exercises, five times a week. She eats five small meals every day, and her diet consists of grains, meat, and vegetables. Michelle created MacDonald's Instagram account back in 2018. She manages the account, but MacDonald is the one who directly engages with her followers. The 73-year-old personality shares workout tips, photos and videos of her progress, and some encouraging words on her page. MacDonald said that being a social personality is something new to her. She had to learn how to use a smartphone. Ever since her following grew, women of different ages have reached out to her to share their success stories. MacDonald advises other women who want to follow in her footsteps to seek a trainer and a support group that can uplift them.
