Jonathan Aitken's fall from grace was spectacular. Touted as a future Prime Minister, his lies under oath in a court of law landed him in prison. But in the carnage of the high-profile front-page life implosion, friends came alongside him and introduced him to the ‘One who sticks closer than a brother'. Now an active prison chaplain in his ninth decade, Jonathan's still got plenty of life to live! What an encouragement! In this episode I'm joined by former government minister, author, ordained prison chaplain and priest and, like me, a former inmate of Belmarsh prison - the Reverend Jonathan Aitken. Having survived and thrived over eight decades of triumph and crisis, Jonathan has a lifetime of stories to tell and wisdom to impart.  From spending childhood years battling TB to working as a reporter in Saigon; to being tipped as a future Prime Minister described as ‘not just gilded but golden' from pleading guilty and being sentenced for perjury, to finding faith and rebuilding his life's purpose as a priest - Jonathan has seen and been through it all.  Jonathan's most recent crisis almost claimed his life. But, throughout it all he has pushed on and pushed through with a sense of resilience – and an incredible rate of productivity - that is truly inspiring and from which I think we can all learn.  Thank you, Jonathan.  Links    Aitken is a trustee of the Saïd Foundation, McDonald Agape Foundation, and Trinity Forum Europe. Tim and Pilar discuss an article featured in the Jan/Feb 2024 edition of the Harvard Business Review: "Leading in the Flow of Work" by Hitendra Wadhwa, Founder of the Mentora Institute. Hitendra posits that "rather than (being) a trait to be acquired, leadership is a state to be activated" through preparation, self awareness and reflection. By managing our internal state and matching our actions to the context, we will function better and more authentically as leaders. The article especially focusses on conversations and how leaders can get better outcomes by making conscious choices about what to do. It's an attractive premise, to be able to skilfully navigate the challenges of fluid interactions by pausing and then choosing, in the moment, an appropriate action for the situation. This model lists five core energies: Purpose (committed to a noble cause), Wisdom (calm and receptive to the truth), Growth (curious and open to learning), Love (connected with those you work with and serve) and Self-realisation (centered in a joyful spirit). This is supported by 25 actions which help activate these core energies. For our hosts this discussion is bittersweet. There is excitement at the prospect of making better decisions during important interactions. And there is also regret that our past selves didn't have the advantage of our current knowledge. Ironically of course it is that same regret which makes us the older and wiser person we are today... 0:30 mins Pilar appreciated several examples from the article of someone turning a potential confrontation into a better situation via the person shifting their approach. 2:30 Tim had previously associated flow states with sports - quite a different interpretation which is about acting without conscious thought or decision, just using instinct and muscle memory. But within the context of the article the flow state is where we are "calmly aware of our inner and outer conditions and able to adapt our behaviour as needed". Pilar describes this as a split personality between being present and reviewing what's going on. And being able to shift behaviour based on this conscious awareness. 5:25 We can all relate to the feeling of something not going the way we expected. When we unpack it afterwards we gain new insight and realise we should have acted differently. Alas, the moment has passed. Certainly both our hosts have experienced this many times! 6:25 The article shares a compelling example, from Jonathan Aitken's biography of Margaret Thatcher, about a pivotal meeting between Thatcher and Mikhail Gorbachev. At a crucial point Gorbachev was able to change his approach and in the process, change the course of history. He reminded himself of his intention coming into the meeting. He reframes his perception of how Thatcher is acting. And he finds alignment with her on principles. 8:20 Pilar shares that a realisation that has been transformational for her: that people are generally not acting with malice - they are trying to do what they believe is right. 8:50 We can practice and get better at understanding and acting within the moment itself. But it takes a lot of effort. And time. 10:50 Letting go of our everyday habits and ego can free us to choose the best way to act. It also requires the empathy of understanding what is happening for the other person. 12:15 Our hosts wrestle with the regrets that come with learning and evolving. But our experiences make us the person that we are today. 14:15 Leadership is not a static state: "The personality and behaviour of someone will change with the context that the person is in, the thoughts and feelings that individual is experiencing and who else is present". Pilar shares a story about how a change in context made a big difference in her performance. 17:00 This framework reminds us that our habitual behaviours aren't always going to work. If we are able to be aware and present in the moment, we have a better chance of navigating the situation. 19:40 Often conflict comes even though everyone wants the same outcome. There is just something else getting in the way. 21:45 Tim's experience aligns with the model in that he's had better outcomes when he has prepared, put effort into being open and aware, spent time unpacking and reframing interactions. 22:30 The five core energies are intrinsic to our core humanity. There is a close connection to authentic leadership. "Leadership in flow does not work by faking it". 25:00 One last reminder on the value of reframing. When aren't going to get things right every time. Instead of focussing on our failures, the article shares how we can still find pride in our intention and effort. What about you, dear listener? Does Leadership in Flow resonate with you? Do you wish you could turn back the clock and get a second chance? We'd love to hear from you! 5x15 is thrilled to welcome best-selling writer and journalist Luke Harding to talk about his new book Invasion: Russia's Bloody War and Ukraine's Fight for Survival, a powerful and urgent account of the war in Ukraine. Reporting from Ukraine as foreign correspondent for the Guardian, Luke Harding has had unique insights into this conflict. Invasion, which is the first book of reportage from the front line, is a 'superb first draft of history' (Anne Applebaum) that examines the personal, religious and ideological motivations behind Putin's decision to invade, and offers a moving testament to Ukrainian survival. For this special 5x15 event, Luke will be in conversation with Gideon Rachman, chief foreign affairs commentator for the Financial Times and author of The Age of the Strongman, to discuss the issues that are essential to understanding this terrible war: the factors behind it, the unfolding developments, and its possible outcomes. Author royalties from this edition of Invasion will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee's Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. Praise for Luke Harding 'Compelling, important and heartbreaking with all the urgency and immediacy of outstanding war reportage, here is the Russian invasion of Ukraine minute by minute, political and personal, from the cabinets of power to the streets and apartments of ordinary Ukrainians by a master reporter and analyst.' - SIMON SEBAG MONTEFIORE 'Luke Harding has once again written a superb first draft of history, this time of the Ukrainian war. An excellent, moving account of an ongoing tragedy.' - ANNE APPLEBAUM 'Brilliant . . . Harding is one of the best experts on Putin's Russia. Invasion reads like an exciting military-political thriller, but all its characters and events are true.' - ANDREY KURKOV 'Luke Harding is one of the best reporters in the world.' - ROBERTO SAVIANO LUKE HARDING is an award-winning foreign correspondent with the Guardian. He has reported from Delhi, Berlin and Moscow and has also covered wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Libya and Syria. Between 2007 and 2011 he was the Guardian's Moscow bureau chief. The Kremlin expelled him from the country in the first case of its kind since the cold war and in summer 2022 put him on an official blacklist. He is the author of Mafia State and co-author of WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange's War on Secrecy, The Liar: The Fall of Jonathan Aitken (nominated for the Orwell Prize) and The Snowden Files. Two of Harding's books have been made into films; The Fifth Estate and Snowden. GIDEON RACHMAN is the Chief Foreign Affairs columnist for the Financial Times. In 2016 he won the Orwell Prize for Journalism and was named Commentator of the Year at the European Press Prize awards. Previously he worked for The Economist for fifteen years, and has served as a foreign correspondent in Washington, Bangkok and Brussels. Twenty five years ago Jonathan Aitken was a high profile journalist and Tory politician who found himself in very hot water He was pursued mercilessly by sections of the British press when they gathered evidence to show that he had encouraged one of his daughters to lie in court to get him out of a tight legal corner into which his own lies had lead him. He was found guilty and sentenced to a jail term As a sideshow to his public fall from grace he ran up a huge legal bill which he could not pay. Bankruptcy was inevitable. Many were sceptical when he 'found God' in jail. He confounded his critics however by sticking with religion and becoming ordained as a vicar. There was a book published in 2003 called 'Pride and Perjury'. Jonathan Aitken talked to David Freeman about it, and his life,  soon after publication.

Former prison inmate now prison chaplain, Jonathan Aitken takes us inside HMP Pentonville, as he describes a year of prison chaplaincy during the pandemic which he says has led to some ground-breaking and long overdue reforms. ‘If you’re not religious, say so!’ – that is the request of a campaign launched this week by Humanists UK. They want people who are "not in any meaningful sense religious to tick the ‘no religion’ option on the 2021 Census". Ed Stourton is joined by the Chief Executive of Humanists UK, Andrew Copson, and also Nick Spencer of religion and society think tank Theos to discuss the Census, religion and the none-religious. In 1999 Former Conservative MP and Cabinet Minister Jonathan Aitken was convicted of perjury at The Old Bailey in a famous and widely reported case. His political career in ruins, he received an 18-month prison sentence starting at the high security HMP Belmarsh. Jonathan’s story is quite unique—and at the time, he was one of the most vilified personalities of his generation. As a journalist he spent some seven years on Fleet Street and as an author has written some 17 books including acclaimed biographies on Nixon and Thatcher. These days he is a London based Priest serving as Prison Chaplain in HMP Pentonville in East London and Assistant Minister in St Matthew’s Westminster Church. Our fascinating conversation took place in his London home. Listen in as we chat over the past, present and future of a life fully lived. This is Your London Legacy  “I was playing in the sandpit in my aunt’s garden—suddenly there came over in the sky a sound of a noisy engine. And this was a doodlebug, a flying bomb that came over.” 16:10 One of Jonathan’s earliest memories is of a flying bomb chugging its engine overhead while he played in a sandbox—an object and event of historical intrigue no doubt, and an interesting starting place for a future politician. But before Jonathan fully entered the political life he was a journalist, and as he says, a young journalist goes to where the news is. This meant he traveled all over the world—Vietnam, the Middle East, Africa, and covering Nixon’s election in the states. But he always felt like a spectator looking in, and longed for the political life of being in the center of the events he was covering.   “I’ve often asked myself the same—because it wasn’t really worth doing, covering it up. I think it was a combination of pride—and fear.” 30:40 Jonathan went on to become a Defense Minister – and on a trip to Paris stayed at a hotel that would bring about the fall of his career by accepting to have his room paid for by someone else. A hospitality he didn’t know would change his life – by eventually trying to cover up this small courtesy. The media upon finding out that this bill was footed by a figure from a foreign government went after him – and after a single comment in trial, a false one, Jonathan was prosecuted for perjury and sentenced to 18 months in prison.   “I was, I think – ruined, but not totally heartbroken.” 39:10 While undoubtedly a moment where his whole life unraveled, Jonathan didn’t see going to prison as a death sentence. There was a feeling that life would go on and something new would happen—as indeed it did, through a chance prison encounter with an inmate and refusing a certain collection of dirty magazines, no less. Jonathan had turned to faith to help guide him through his sentence and it slowly accumulated during and after his incarceration until he found himself studying at an Anglican theological college. Since he had seen how prison was the great equalizer where no one behind bars is more important than anyone else, he felt compelled to continue practicing his faith among those he had once called his brothers. As a prison chaplain, Jonathan now raises awareness about the quality of prisons today and the dangers that lay within, and also beyond the cells once inmates are released. He has seen how people end up right back behind bars and is working towards practical and societal changes to help reintroduce people to the working world, life at large, and the faith behind it all.   Links JonathanAitken.org (https://www.jonathanaitken.org/) Support this podcast

In a frank and moving interview the priest and former politician Jonathan Aitken talks to Michael Berkeley about the music that has accompanied his rollercoaster life. At one time Jonathan Aitken was widely tipped to be a future Conservative Prime Minister, but his glittering political career came crashing down just over twenty years ago, when he stood in the dock of the Old Bailey to plead guilty to perjury, after a lie he told about the payment of a hotel bill caused the collapse of his libel case against the Guardian and Granada Television. He left the court in a prison van with an 18-month sentence. Last December, he was back at the Old Bailey – this time leading the annual carol service, having recently been ordained as a priest. Jonathan chooses pieces which bring back childhood memories of singing for Benjamin Britten and performing Messiah as a chorister in Norwich, and we hear a song John McCormack sang to him during the three years Jonathan spent on a Dublin TB ward as a very young child. He talks frankly to Michael about the mistakes and pride that led to his downfall from public life, and how he survived disgrace, divorce, bankruptcy and prison. He chooses, with a smile, the Prisoners’ Chorus from Fidelio, and a setting of Psalm 24 that was a crucial part of his spiritual journey in prison. Jonathan tells a funny musical story about when Nixon met Wilson, and he reveals the piece of music that best captures his sense of redemption and renewal as he embarks on his new life as a prison chaplain.
