Last month, my 14-year-old son came home from school with a book in hand and excitedly said, “Dad, you've got to read this book!My son has never said anything like this to me before, and I was immediately intrigued. I picked up the book, a graphic novel, and it took me in immediately. It was engrossing and profound. It was at times hilarious and at other times utterly heartbreaking. Overall, it was a superbly relatable human story that describes a period in the life of an American-born Chinese boy that was true to his experience and that, simultaneously, opens a door to a Chinese mythical world. The author is Gene Luen Yang (https://geneyang.com/), and I was thrilled to learn that his New York Times bestselling, award winning, and critically acclaimed book, American Born Chinese, has been made into an eight-part miniseries on Disney. The miniseries has an all-star lineup the likes of which blows my mind! The cast includes Academy Award Winners Michelle Yeoh and and Ke Huy Quan (also known as Jonathan Ke Quan) and two of my favorite comedians, Ronnie Chieng and Jimmy O Yang! And throughout this interview, you'll get to learn from Gene who is a cool, kind, and deep-thinking person. I am confident you will appreciate him as much as I have. So, I am releasing this episode to coincide with Chinese New Year. A hearty Gung Hay Fat Choy to all who celebrate! And what a great way to celebrate the Year of the Dragon by listening to Gene share his story and the story behind the story of American Born Chinese. Producer's note: When we prepped Jordan's new intro to this amazing interview from April of '22, I had jotted something down like, "who could have dreamed back then that he'd go on to win all the awards." Jordan rightly called this out, because (as she says here) she, and other critics, DID dream that. What I'd meant was: it seemed like one of those performances and films that you hope will be both lauded AND awarded, but you aren't holding your breath for the latter. How thrilling to be wrong sometimes.Watch Ke Huy Quan accept his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.***As a kid, he was Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Data in The Goonies. But as he got older, Ke Huy Quan began to feel that there wasn't really a place for him in front of the camera. E' finalmente giunto nei cinema italiani il nuovo film dei Daniels, Everything Everywhere All At Once con Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jonathan Ke Quan, Stephanie Hsu e James Hong. Dopo Swiss Army Man, tornano con una nuova pellicola targata A24 e ne parliamo nel nuovo episodio.

Plot Summary: In 1935, Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) survives a crooked deal gone sideways with crime boss Lao Che in Shanghai with fellow travelers Short Round (Jonathan Ke Quan) and nightclub singer Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw) arriving in the village of Mayapore in northern India. The villagers plead for aid in retrieving the stone along with their missing children from the evil forces in the nearby Pankot Palace where a new Maharaja has been seated. Indy's questions about the mysterious Thugee cult are real, and he, Willie, and Short Round race to survive the Temple of Doom. Impeachment Trial Moves Toward Key VotesGuest: James Curry, PhD, Professor of Political Science, University of Utah; Robert Adler, JD, Distinguished Professor, SJ Quinney College of Law, University of UtahThe process of impeaching President Donald J. Trump is winding down. Last week, House Democrats voted to impeach, the US Senate convened a trial and that's what's been playing out this last week. First House Democrats got 24 hours to make the case that President Trump abused his power and obstructed justice –two counts the Democrats say warrant impeaching and removing the president from office. Then the President's legal team had 24 hours to present their defense. And now the trial is in question and answer phase. Our Obsession With Natural ProductsGuest: Alan Levinovitz, Associate Professor of Religion, James Madison University, Author of Natural: How Faith in Nature's Goodness Leads to Harmful Fads, Unjust Laws, and Flawed ScienceWe're told–and a lot of us agree–that natural is always better, whether it's food, flavors and fibers or skin care and supplements. But did you know that the FDA doesn't even define what “natural” means on a food label? It's basically just a marketing ploy to catch your attention –and it works. Lifestyle brands like Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop have made obsessing about all things natural into a lucrative business. Setting aside the often dubious health and wellness claims attached to anything “natural,” why do we place so much value in the idea of it? Auditioning to Become Indiana Jones' SidekickGuest: Nobu Adilman, Documentary Filmmaker of Short Round Up, Musician and ArtistShort Round is maybe the most memorable character in an Indiana Jones movie next to Indy himself. Jonathan Ke Quan played the spunky sidekick in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. But thousands of other kids auditioned for the role, including Nobu Adilman. He made a short documentary called Short Round Up in which he tracks down some of the other aspiring actors who also auditioned for the role. I'm Not Normal and Neither Are You. Nathaniel and Magda Newman on Life With Treacher Collins SyndromeGuest: Magda and Nathaniel Newman, Authors of Normal: A Mother and Her Beautiful SonThe book for young readers called Wonder by RJ Palacio–and the movie based on it –gave people a better understanding of Treacher Collins syndrome. It's a genetic condition that causes severe facial deformities like Auggie has in Wonder. Nathaniel Newman is sometimes called “the real life Auggie,” because he has Treacher Collins, too, but that's pretty much where the similarities stop. Nathaniel and his mother Magda are now telling their story in a memoir called Normal: A Mother and Her Beautiful Son. It's just been published in two versions–one for young readers and one for adults. Using A.I. to Improve Breast Cancer DetectionGuest: Mozziyar Etemadi, MD, PhD, Research Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Northwestern University, Physician at Northwestern MedicineTens of millions of women in the US get a mammogram each year, because it remains the best way we have to catch breast cancer early. But it's far from fool-proof. The American Cancer Society says mammograms miss one out of every five breast cancers. And on the flip side, half of women getting a yearly mammogram will end up with a false alarm diagnosis over a 10-year period. Could artificially intelligent software do a better job than human doctors analyzing mammograms?
Episode 162: Will the Crew fall to the black sleep of the Kali Ma as they discuss Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom? No, cause it's a fun adventure film. No time for sleep Dr. Jones! The film did cause some controversy over the amount of violence and child slavery plot. And as a result, the PG-13 rating was created (Gremlins helped as well). Red Dawn was the first PG-13 film, released only two months after Temple of Doom. If you like our music intro, click here and listen to more awesome music from aquariusweapon. Sean Astin stars as Mikey, the youngest of two brothers who are about to move from their home in Astoria, Oregon because their family lacks the funds to stop a developer from taking over the area to expand a lush country club. This would end many friendships with the other children in the area, which they’ve dubbed “the Goondocks”, and their crew call themselves The Goonies, who are united in their quest for adventure and shenanigans. Things take an interesting turn when a map is discovered in Mikey’s father’s collection of antiques in their attic, which promises to lead to the secret fortune of the infamous One-Eyed Willy, whose cache of jewels promises to make them rich beyond imagination, once they get though all the pirate booty-traps (er, I mean, booby-traps). The gang end up finding the entrance to the caves where the loot is hidden, but a rival group of thieves threatens to get there first, and to kill anyone who gets in their way. Steven Spielberg produces, Chris Columbus scripts, and Richard Donner directs. Also features Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Jonathan Ke Quan, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, Anne Ramsey, John Matuszak, Robert Davi, and Joe Pantoliano.

Hey, you guys! We all loved Richard Donner’s 1985 adventure comedy, “The Goonies,” as kids, but do we really have to spend the rest of our lives pretending that it is a quality film? Sure, Jeff Cohen’s portrayal of Chunk is brilliant, but the rest of the movie smells like Phys Ed. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sean Astin plays Mikey, a greedy bracefaced dunce who leads his friends into enormous peril so that he can bail out his deadbeat parents who haven’t been making their mortgage payments. Oscar-nominated actor Josh Brolin plays Brand, Mikey's workout-obsessed bandana-wearin’ older brother who doesn’t really do much in the film other than attract a girl who barely knows how to play the piano. Jeff Cohen plays Chunk, a gentle soul who wanted nothing to do with this misguided quest and ultimately ends up saving everyone’s lives, including the bad guys, by using his undeniable charisma to befriend a Herculean behemoth. Corey Feldman plays Mouth, an annoying narcissistic jerk who translates Spanish throughout the film for both good and evil. Jonathan Ke Quan plays Data, a mediocre inventor whose zany gadgets are even less believable than the legend of One-Eyed Willy. Kerri Green plays Andy, a cheerleader with dubious piano knowledge who spends half the movie screaming and the other half playing kissy-face. Emmy Award-winning actress Martha Plimpton plays Stef, a ball-bustin’ friend of Andy’s who, along with Josh Brolin’s character, doesn’t really do anything throughout the film. Oscar-nominated actress Anne Ramsey plays Mama Fratelli, the evil baby-dropping ringleader of the Fratelli gang. Razzie Award-nominated actor Robert Davi plays Jake Fratelli, an opera-singing escaped convict who longs for his mama’s approval. Emmy Award-winning actor Joe Pantoliano (a.k.a. Joey Pants) plays Francis Fratelli, a toupéed bumbling stooge who laughs like a hyena. Two-time Super Bowl champion John Matuszak plays Sloth, a deformed and mistreated colossus who loves Errol Flynn movies, Baby Ruth bars, and Chunk. Here's a story about a time when the world's most prominent filmmaker fails for the first time, goes to war with the DGA, forces the hand of the MPAA, builds a franchise, makes the biggest film ever made, reinvents the action movie, and quits writing for decades. The most interesting 5 years in Stephen Spielberg's life. Featuring Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Tobe Hooper, with cameo appearances from John Milius, Richard Matheson, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, Lawrence Kasdan, Robert Zemeckis, Joe Dante, John Carpenter, David Cronenberg, David Lynch, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Brian De Palma, John Landis, Michael Cimino, and Samuel Goddamn Fuller. I cut sections on Spielberg hiring Joe Dante in order to stop the production of Jaws 3, People 0 and Satyajit Ray claiming E.T. was stolen from a spec script that was circling around Hollywood while Spielberg was at Universal television, becuause neither of them seemed to flow nicely with the rest of the story. Also I never figured out how to fit in all the crazy stuff -- the way that Milius introduced Kathleen Kennedy to Spielberg. And Kennedy being one of the dancers at the start of Temple of Doom. The way that Milius, Spielberg, and Lucas all traded points on Star Wars, Close Encounters, and Big Wednesday. How Spielberg took a day off on E.T. to watch De Palma shoot the final gunfight for Scarface. How De Palma shot Casualties of War on all the same locations as Temple of Doom... I really love the stories of this group of people who were playing at this high level and still managed to be artists, for a while anyway. I don't know, I tried to not make it a "Jaws is awesome podcast". Jaws is the truth. I really think this is a story of an artist finding the edge of his abilities, and an industry pushing back when he slips... but it may have descended into fanboy connections, even with cutting all the stuff listed above. I think that the reason De Palma stayed as fierce a filmmaker as he is, and Scorsese too, is that they met with a lot more consisten ups and downs than Spielberg/Lucas/Coppola, and their abilities to buy studios. They had more to lose, and kept losing every few films. Boiling it down to just those five directors leaves out how important Milius and Dante and Marcia Lucas and Amy Robinson and Paul Schrader and all the others were to the story too. Any version of "this is a cool thing that happened" leaves out the context of a dozen major and minor players left out. 1941 (1979), directed by Steve Spielberg, based on a story by John Milius, written by Robert Zemeckis & Bob Gale, starring... well, everyone I listed at the start of the podcast. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), directed by Steven Spielberg; written by Lawrence Kasdan; story by George Lucas and Phillip Kaufman (who I didn't mention on the show but I think probably has a lot more to do with how rich the script is character-wise); starring Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, Denholm Elliot, Paul Freeman, John Rhys-Davies, and Alfred Molina. E.T. the Extraterrestrial (1982), directed by Steven Spielberg; written by Melissa Mathison; starring Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote, Henry Thomas, Robert McNaughton, and Drew Barrymore. Poltergeist (1982), directed by Tobe Hooper; written by Steven Spielberg, Michael Grais, and Mark Victor; starring Craig T.
