Producer's note: When we prepped Jordan's new intro to this amazing interview from April of '22, I had jotted something down like, "who could have dreamed back then that he'd go on to win all the awards." Jordan rightly called this out, because (as she says here) she, and other critics, DID dream that. What I'd meant was: it seemed like one of those performances and films that you hope will be both lauded AND awarded, but you aren't holding your breath for the latter. How thrilling to be wrong sometimes.Watch Ke Huy Quan accept his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.***As a kid, he was Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Data in The Goonies. But as he got older, Ke Huy Quan began to feel that there wasn't really a place for him in front of the camera. After decades of telling himself he didn't miss acting, Crazy Rich Asians made a splash, and Ke began to think that maybe it was time to get back to acting. Ke opens up about all of that, and landing in the perfect threefold role of Waymond, Alpha Waymond, and CEO Waymond in Everything Everywhere All At Once. And then, Jordan has one quick thing about Bend it Like Beckham's 20th anniversary. With Jordan Crucchiola and Ke Huy Quan
Bend it like Beckham is a 2002 Sports Romantic Comedy directed by Gurinder Chadha… it's the story of Jesminder or Jess Bhamra played by Parminder Nagra. Bend it Like Beckham is Jess' story, breaking the mold, disobeying her family, PROVING to everyone that just because she is a woman she CAN still play Football and ultimately, maybe finding love along the way. Today, we're discussing one of our favorite lesbian rom-coms, Bend It Like Beckham (2002). ...okay, maybe it's not canon, but isn't it? In this episode, we get into misleading advertisements, the Spice Girls, Keira Knightley causing many gay awakenings, and narrative structures of romcoms--but tbh most of this episode is us going, "How is this NOT gay?" Seriously. Have you SEEN this movie? Listen in and see if you agree that this movie deserves an honorary spot in the lesbian film hall of fame. This episode was edited by Michelle. Logo by Micky. For the first time on this channel, we talk about soccer. Parminder Nagra and a pre-stardom Keira Knightley are best buddies and soccer-lovers in director Gurinder Chadha's feminist flick. Clearly, Bend It Like Beckham wasn't made for a couple of middle-aged Canadian men to discuss, but we were quite entertained all the same. We talked about male/female double standards (especially as it relates to scars), we talked about the strange "girl, you need a boyfriend ASAP" mandate from the parents and we talked about how a couple of those funny parents steal the whole movie. Well, you have never heard us talk about the footie, so it's time to do that right now, innit?! Today's Guest: Daniel Pyne, novelist, A Hole in the Ground Owned by a Liar, TV writer, "Alcatraz" Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of Hollywood screenwriters who plot out my every move on storyboards… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Order from Amazon.com by clicking the book cover above! Hearing that a comic novel takes place in a mine is not the best way to get my attention for a spot on this show. C’mon! A mine? And yet I’ve now fallen for that pitch twice with no regrets. The first was William Kent Kruger’s thrilling Vermillion Drift. And now I’m recommending writer Daniel Pyne’s second novel, A Hole in the Ground Owned by a Liar. It’s a very different story, an adventure with darkly comic overtones. Both books are page-turners; so much for anti-mines prejudice! DANIEL PYNE audio excerpt: "I was interested in doing things that I don't get to do when I'm writing films or television." Pyne has an advantage as a storyteller in print. Besides having previously written a popular cult novel in Twentynine Palms, he’s best known as a successful, experienced Hollywood screenwriter. For example, Pyne was a writer on films such as Any Given Sunday, Pacific Heights, two really good Michael J. Fox movies, Doc Hollywood and The Hard Way, Fracture, the film version of Miami Vice, and the remake of The Manchurian Candidate. Last year, Pyne gave his all to the Fox television drama “Alcatraz,” produced by JJ Abrams and starring Sam Neill, Jorge Garcia, Parminder Nagra, Sarah Jones and Robert Forster. He was a writer, executive producer and co-showrunner on the series, which was cancelled after just one season. If you’re one of those people who still likes to discover a really good story, I heartily recommend Daniel Pyne’s A Hole in the Ground Owned by a Liar.
