Carefully Taught: Teaching Musical Theatre with Matty and Kikau
Today Kikau talks to Kelly Todd from Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. We have a fantastic conversation about her program, how her and her students survived two fires in the past few months, and hard work! Her recommendation is Brené Brown's podcast Dare to Lead. Kelly Todd received her MEd in mathematics education from UCLA in 1999 and her BA in theater arts also from UCLA in 1997. She has taught as a professor in the theater department at Pepperdine University for four years and has choreographed their recent musicals Big Fish, Crazy for You, and South Pacific. She is the 2014 Ovation Award Winner for Best Choreography for her work on Lysistrata Jones at the Chance Theater, where she is a resident artist. Some of her favorite credits there have been West Side Story, for which she received the LA Drama Critics Circle 2012 Special Award for Fight Choreography, and Triassic Parq, in 2013 and Jerry Springer: The Opera, in 2011 which both won the Ovation Award for Best Musical in an Intimate Theater and garnered her Ovation Award Nominations for Best Choreography. She was named Southern California's Choreographer of the Year in 2011 and 2012 by Stage Scene LA. Other credits include Once (Regional Premiere after Broadway), Light in the Piazza, Ivy and Bean, The Musical, Peter Pan and Seussical at South Coast Repertory, and The Who's Tommy at Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

Fight choreography is tricky. We have it in comics, plays, movies and TV. When it's in full motion the trick is that you cant usually show things connecting so you have to work around the safety aspects in various ways. In comics you can show things connecting but how do you make the movement and the narrative believable and exciting just by using still images? It takes a lot of skill! Animation has to be the easiest way to depict fights because you can show the results of hits AND you can easily make moment believable but there are always challenges. There are 3 main types of fights: duels, brawls, and battles, though there are a million combos and variations between those. Duel: one against one. Brawl: everyone against everyone. Battle: a big group against another big group. Fights usually involve a character that wants something and another trying to prevent them from getting it so the narrative of your fight has to include that dynamic, not simply action for its own sake. I've worked at drawing a few fight scenes myself for my comics and I think I do a pretty decent job at it. I visualise the fight progress in my mind, work out the beginning, middle and end of it (treating it like a mini story), and then visualise cool images that depict parts of the progress and action in the most dynamic and sexily interesting way possible. That works well for duels. Battles are more chaotic and it helps just to focus on a few key parts while leaving the main fighting in the background. Trying to show the overall clash on a larger scale is very easy to mess up: look at the stupid battles in the later Lord of the Rings movies, the troop moments make no sense at all, they're just running from here to there to everywhere pretty pointlessly, but when things focus down on individuals at a smaller scale it works much better! What are your fave fight scenes? And how do you go about choreographing a fight in your comic? One of my faves is the duel between Inigo Montoya and the Dread Pirate Roberts in The Princess Bride and the first fight in the movie the Duellists. This week Gunwallace has given us a theme inspired by Cork and Blotto - Hill street bluesish 80s sounding TV drama action theme mixed with a holly reverential choir. Tasty, spiky red hot lashings of electric guitar splashed thoroughly through it, counterbalancing the more thoughtful and staid piano. Producer's note: When we prepped Jordan's new intro to this amazing interview from April of '22, I had jotted something down like, "who could have dreamed back then that he'd go on to win all the awards." Jordan rightly called this out, because (as she says here) she, and other critics, DID dream that. What I'd meant was: it seemed like one of those performances and films that you hope will be both lauded AND awarded, but you aren't holding your breath for the latter. How thrilling to be wrong sometimes.Watch Ke Huy Quan accept his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.***As a kid, he was Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Data in The Goonies. But as he got older, Ke Huy Quan began to feel that there wasn't really a place for him in front of the camera. After decades of telling himself he didn't miss acting, Crazy Rich Asians made a splash, and Ke began to think that maybe it was time to get back to acting. Ke opens up about all of that, and landing in the perfect threefold role of Waymond, Alpha Waymond, and CEO Waymond in Everything Everywhere All At Once. And then, Jordan has one quick thing about Bend it Like Beckham's 20th anniversary. With Jordan Crucchiola and Ke Huy Quan
#brahimchab #interview I always enjoy catching up with previous guests on The Mighty Dragon. This time it's fight choreographer and actor Brahim Chab who was on the blog back in 2019! Having a peek at his Instagram account, I could see he's been training as hard as ever. Now based in Thailand, he's been super busy since we last spoke and that includes John Wick: Chapter 4. A part which seems was made for him! Hailing from France, this international actor seems to be happiest when he's training and perfecting his skills. It was great catching up with you Brahim, may I wish you all the very best for your upcoming wedding and every success with all your projects. Resources IMDb – Brahim Chab Assassin's Creed Valhalla
Another episode, another milestone. Wyatt is joined Carla Pantoja who is just such a rad person. She and Wyatt discuss her work as a Fight Director, Director, Actor, and Intimacy Director. Carla is the first EVER female Fight Director at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival where she is currently working on their production of "The Tempest" (directed by Nicholas C. Avila) which opened LAST NIGHT!!! They get really into the nitty gritty about how that collaborative process works between Direction, Fight, Intimacy, and they deep dive into the work being an advocate, ally, and artist. Her conversation on being a "first" as well as who are the unsung heroes of a production bring a brand new, and hugely important, perspective to the show!
Bonus Wayne, Fight Choreography and Theatre Stories: It never fails. You think the conversation is over, but then the guest breaks into more great stories. Ending our month of Jackie Chan is the film "Rush Hour," which totally doesn't hold up after all these years and is a bit of a frustrating watch. Probably would have been better to go with something like "The Foreigner" or literally anything else in his filmography. That said, there were a few things that we liked and it brought about a great wrap up discussion about the actor and just how diverse his body of work is.

Our Jackie Chan retrospective resumes with the absolutely goofball "Rumble in the Bronx," and we mean that in the most positive way possible. Sure, the plot is awful, but you're not watching one of these for the plot. You are? Really? Anyway, the action is top notch and thoroughly exciting and the third act is absolutely hilarious, if nonsensical. You owe it to yourself to check out this movie (and our episode on it) if you haven't.

Do you want to know what it's like to choreograph mind-blowing fight sequences for film and TV? Or what it's like choreographing stunt sequences with actors who may never have done action before? Well, you'll want to stick around until the end of my interview with Fight & Stunt Coordinator Jude Poyer. Jude Poyer is stunt coordinator whose career in film and TV spans well over two decades. Starting out as a stunt performer in Hong Kong cinema, he's since worked his way up the ranks to stunt coordinator and action designer. Over the years, he's worked on productions such as Free Fire, Ip Man 4: The Finale, Apostle, Grimsby, Transformers: The Last Knight and most recently raised the bar for British TV action with mind-blowing fight sequences and stunts in Gangs of London. In this interview we talk in depth about his career and his approach to fight sequences and action, the processes of choreographing fights on Gangs of London, we geek out talking about his influences in Hong Kong action cinema, and there's even advice for those who want to get into the industry performing stunts for film & TV.
