They're here! Join BP, Coop and Justin as we analyse the iconic original Poltergeist movie. Poltergeist is a 1982 American supernatural horror film directed by Tobe Hooper and written by Steven Spielberg, Michael Grais, and Mark Victor from a story by Spielberg. It stars JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, and Beatrice Straight, and was produced by Spielberg and Frank Marshall. Plot Poltergeist focuses on a suburban family whose home is invaded by malevolent ghosts that abduct their youngest daughter. In the years since its release, the film has been recognized as a horror classic. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, named by the Chicago Film Critics Association as the 20th-scariest film ever made. Steven Spielberg involvement Accounts differ as to the level of Spielberg's involvement, but it is clear that he was frequently on set during filming and exerted significant creative control. For that reason, some have said that Spielberg should be considered the film's co-director or even main director, though both Spielberg and Hooper have disputed this. Sequels and Remake The film was followed by Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986), Poltergeist III (1988), as well as a 2015 remake, but none had the critical success of the original. The Poltergeist Curse The Poltergeist franchise is believed by some to be cursed due to the premature deaths of several people associated with the film (including Heather O'Rourke and Dominique Dunne), a notion that was the focus of an E! True Hollywood Story. Poltergeist was also featured on Season 1, episode 3 of Cursed Films. Popular Culture "Bad Dream House", the first segment of "Treehouse of Horror", the first episode of the annual The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Halloween specials, is partly a parody of Poltergeist. Spice Girls pays homage to the film in their 1997 music video for the song "Too Much". The Family Guy episode "Petergeist", Peter Griffin discovers an Indian burial ground when he attempts to build a multiplex in a backyard. When he takes an Indian chief's skull, a poltergeist invades the Griffins' home. The episode used some of the same musical cues heard in the film and recreates several of its scenes. American Dad! also parodied the film with the season 10 episode "Poltergasm", in which the Smith house has become haunted by Francine's unsatisfied sex drive, and Roger plays Ruby Zeldastein, a parody of Tangina. The 2001 comedy horror film Scary Movie 2 parodies the movie's clown doll attack in Robbie's bedroom, as well as Diane's levitation. #poltergeist #theotherside #ghost #haunt #movie #horror #1982 #80shorror #carolanne #jobethwilliams #reverendkane #tangina #clown #familyguy #drawntogether #podcast #completeguidetohorror #stevenspielberg #screamqueens

We begin by discussing our connection and experience watching the television sketch-comedy show Saturday Night Live (1975-present). We discuss the actors' performances in the film, especially in their impersonations of the famous cast members of the original episode: Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd and Andy Kaufman. We shift our conversation to Network and how relevant the film still is today. We also praise the performances in Network, including Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Peter Finch, Robert Duvall, Beatrice Straight and Ned Beatty. We compare the two films, especially the costume and production design of both films being similar while being almost 50 years apart.

"Now clear your minds. It knows what scares you. It has from the very beginning. Don't give it any help, it knows too much already. Now, open the door." It's our season six premiere and we watched "Poltergeist" from 1982 and this house is clean! Poltergeist may very well be the definition of "Mama Slay Cinema" with JoBeth Williams, Beatrice Straight and the legendary Zelda Rubinstein bustin' ghosts and saving the children from the other side. Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper re-wrote the haunted house trope bringing it to a brand new house in a sleepy  suburb and a generation never looked at a staticy T.V. the same way again. The creepy lullaby score by Jerry Goldsmith only adds to the Amblin-esque quality of this '80s classic and not for nothing but Craig T. Nelson was making us feel some type of way serving '80s dad realness and we thank him for his service. WoHos!This week we looked at two movies related to Ghosts: POLTERGEIST (1982) & THE OTHERS.POLTERGEIST deals with the sins of capitalism and consumerism in the guise of some disruptove ghosties. Mac enjoyed this more than I did. I felt super sad at the depiction of the teenage daughter as an object of sexual attention and nothing much else.Strong performances by JoBeth Williams, Beatrice Straight, Zelda Rubenstein, and Craig T. Nelson together with the gnarly practical effects are enough to recommend this film for both of us. We give it 4 TV's!I was much more jazzed about the atmospheric THE OTHER by the ever-impressive filmmaker Alejandro Amenabar. Mac and I split on the rewatchability of this film. What do you think?I gave it 4.25 keys and Mac gave it a straight 4 keys. This ep is tangent-heavy. We talk about oversharing strangers, materialism, the 80s and what should be left to the dustpin of history as well as ownership/property, photographing dead people, and the relationship between mind and body.Coming up next are two special shows featuring friends of the show and esteemed WoHos, Stefan MacDonald discussing VIDEODROME and Martin Harries discussing DR. We return to the story of Michael Chekhov; his auspicious start from the early days of the Moscow Art Theatre, his exile from Russia after the revolution and the rocky road that led him to that fateful encounter down the street from the Group Theatre in 1935. It was there he met the young Beatrice Straight, talented actress and heiress to the Payne Whitney fortune, who offered him the chance to build his own school and acting company at Dartington Hall in England. In the competition for the attention of young actors between Michael Chekhov and Michel Saint-Denis that took place in the UK in 1935, Chekhov never had a chance. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/storyofacting/message

In September of 1952, Orson Welles worked with the BBC for a portrait of early American director Robert Flaherty. Flaherty, who directed the first docu-drama film, Nanook of the North in 1922, had passed away the previous July. As Welles just mentioned, when he got to Hollywood in the late 1930s, he was fascinated by the early film people, and they were more than happy to share their stories with the then-Boy Wonder. In April of 1953 the BBC hired Welles to read one hour of poetry from Walt Whitman's “Song of Myself.” The next month the Italian comedy Man, Beast and Virtue debuted, in which Welles co-starred. From September 7th into October, Welles was involved with Ballet de Paris at the Stoll Theatre in London for a production of The Lady in the Ice. In October the production moved to Paris. Welles directed, wrote the libretto and was the ballet's costume and set designer. He later told Peter Bogdonovich, “It was very successful in London, and only moderately so in Paris, where it was very badly lit — as everything always is in Paris. The plot is: a girl's been found, like dinosaurs have been found, in a block of ice. And she's on display in a sort of carnival. A young man falls in love with her, and his love melts the ice. And when she kisses him, he turns to ice. A little parable for our times.” It would be the only ballet Orson Welles' ever directed. In late September of 1953 Broadcasting Magazine reported that Harry Alan Towers had sold shows to both ABC and NBC for the fall. ABC would welcome Horatio Hornblower back for a second season, starring Michael Redgrave. Meanwhile on NBC, a new half-hour anthology program starring Sir Lawrence Olivier called Theatre Royal would take to the air. The program debuted on October 4th, 1953 with Orson Welles starring in an adaptation of Alexander Pushkin's “The Queen of Spades.” Pushkin wrote “The Queen of Spades” in the fall of 1833. It's a short story about how human greed can lead to madness. Theatre Royal was developed to capitalize on Lawrence Olivier's name. At the time the program launched, Olivier and then-wife Vivian Leigh were getting set to appear in Terence Rattigan's comedy, The Sleeping Prince in the West End. The play would run for eight months. It made Olivier temporarily unable to star in his own program. Many fine actors of the British stage and screen were involved in individual episodes of Theatre Royal, like Robert Morley, Harry Andrews, Muriel Forbes, and Daphne Maddox. The music was credited to Sidney Torch. Once Sir Lawrence Olivier could no longer appear, Sir Ralph Richardson took over as host of Theatre Royal. Selected episodes were repeated, with a different series opening and closing on ABC Mystery Time in the late 1950s. The show remained in active syndication in the U.S. into the 1970s. Welles briefly returned to America to make his first appearance on TV, starring in the Omnibus presentation of King Lear, broadcast live on CBS on October 18th, 1953. It was directed by Peter Brook, and co-starred Natasha Parry, Beatrice Straight and Arnold Moss.

Pardon the audio this episode, we had some telekinetic difficulties but it's not like we burned down the prom or anything. This week we're queening out on Oscar nominee Piper Laurie as one of horror's most monstrous mothers, Margaret White in 1976's "Carrie." (The question is even posed as to whether she should have won the Academy Award over Beatrice Straight in "Network" that year!) We also have much to say about Broadway legend Betty Buckley in her film debut as Miss Collins, a sympathetic gym teacher fond of a face journey and a cigarette in the principal's office. Plus: Sue Snell and Tommy Ross as "good kids," Nancy Allen as the iconically evil Chris, John Travolta as her flunky hunk, Ellen Travolta as a brief tangent that has nothing to do with "Carrie," and praise for Pino, Priscilla Pointer and that perfectly bonkers ending. The Bad Street gang talk... Poltergeist is a 1982 American supernatural horror film directed by Tobe Hooper and starring JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, Heather O'Rourke, and Beatrice Straight. Steven Spielberg wrote and produced the film, but a clause in his contract prevented him from directing another movie while he made E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Therefore, Hooper was selected to direct based upon his work on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. First conceived as a dark horror sequel to Close Encounters of the Third Kind entitled Night Skies, when Spielberg approached Hooper to direct, Hooper was less keen on the sci-fi elements and suggested the idea of a ghost story.[3] Spielberg and Hooper would then go on to collaborate on the first treatment for the film. It is the first and most successful entry in the Poltergeist film series. Set in a California suburb, the plot focuses on a family whose home is invaded by malevolent ghosts that abduct the family's younger daughter.

Nelson, Beatrice Straight and ESPECIALLY JoBeth Williams. Plus Jerry Goldsmith's amazing score, some kooky quintessential BSA work from Zelda Rubinstein, at least two moments that were reminiscent of Laura Dern in "Jurassic Park," the dog doesn't die, our protagonist is a mom named Diane with a great fashion journey, and Craig T. The film also features Wesley Addy, Ned Beatty, and Beatrice Straight. They talk about the film's central relationship - that between Holden's Max Schumacher and Dunaway's Diana Christensen. They point out how the movie's only sex scene seems to have inspired a similar scene in another film. Greg and Susan also focus the smaller roles which were the most memorable: including Beatty's pivotal performance as a corporate heavy and Marlene Warfield and Arthur Burghardt's scene-stealing turns as radical activists. Greg wonders if the Oscar wins by Finch, Dunaway, and Straight were deserving when compared to other nominees in the same year. The two make their picks for the three funniest scenes in the film.Susan and Greg also discuss the elements of Todd Phillip's "Joker" that appear to be inspired by "Network."

FXFS02EP02_SIDNEY LUMET's NETWORK : Alan Heim, Mark Laub, Michael Jacobi and Jeffrey WolfPLAY PODCAST In 1976, an American satirical film written by Paddy Chayefsky and directed by Sidney Lumet, called Network, about a fictional television network, UBS, and its struggle with poor ratings, starring Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Peter Finch, Robert Duvall and Beatrice Straight was nominated for 12 Academy Awards including best film, best director and best editor. Network, won four Academy Awards, including Oscars for Chayefsky's script, Beatrice Straights' performance as an outraged wife, Faye Dunaway's performance as a cynical programming executive and Peter Finch's frenetic portrayal of Howard Beale, the troubled “mad prophet of the airwaves.” Thirty-five years later, “Network” remains an incendiary if influential film, and its screenplay is still admired as much for its predictive accuracy as for its vehemence and a relentless sense of purpose. Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, cited Chayefsky when he accepted his Oscar for the screenplay of “The Social Network,” and wrote later that “no predictor of the future — not even Orwell — has ever been as right as Chayefsky was when he wrote ‘Network.' ” Alan Heim, the picture editor of the film, Mark Laub, one from a team of sound editors, Michael Jacobi and Jeffrey Wolf, the first assistant editor and the apprentice editor on the film at the time, tell their stories of how the film came together and what it was like in various stages working with director Sidney Lumet, writer Paddy Chayefsky and Producer Howard Gottfried. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Why not bring one of the biggest Hollywood stars together with one of the most iconic horror directors of the 1970's. Producer Stephen Spielberg and director Tobe Hooper come together in 1982 with the legendary production, Poltergeist, a new take on the ghost story. The word itself means a rumbling ghost in German and refers to an entity that simply doesn't haunt but instead manifests itself by actually disturbing the items and people within its surroundings. Everything seems great with the Freeling family. They have three beautiful children, Steven Freeling is successful at work, and his wife Diane seems to be the perfect mother. But suddenly their tranquility ends when bizarre happenings occur within the home they live in. Soon one of them goes missing. As they bring in paranormal investigators for help, Steven discovers something about the neighborhood itself that could be causing all the commotion. The film brought to the world the iconic phrase "They're here" and has become known as not only a classic but possibly the very best ghost film of all time. With its great performances by Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams, and the three child actors, plus the iconic performances of both Oscar winner Beatrice Straight and Zelda Rubinstein, Poltergeist continues to be associated with iconic film. Now, in 2015, a remake has been made. Can it match the original? Listen to the episode to hear what Dark Discussions thinks. Author Kristi Petersen Schoonover joins the crew to talk about the two films. Warning: while Hollister & O’Toole certainly believe in the power of TV to inform and inspire, this week they acknowledge the dark side – dipping into the archives with a look back at Network (1976). Whether satire or reportage, the film firmly lands on the American Film Institute’s list of 100 Greatest Movies of All Time. Network was nominated for 10 Oscars (including Best Picture) – winning four (Best Screenplay; Best Actor; Best Actress; Best Supporting Actress). Written by 3x Oscar winner Paddy Chayefsky. Starring Faye Dunaway, Peter Finch, William Holden, Robert Duvall, Beatrice Straight, and Ned Beatty. Directed by the late, great Sidney Lumet (“The Verdict”, “Serpico”, “12 Angry Men”). Truly an actor’s director (he directed 17 actors to Oscar nominations) – his films from the 1970s alone garnered 30 Oscar nominations. Has there ever been another movie so prescient? Podcast features include: – Clips from the movie – Jeff Daniels’ famous rant on The Newsroom – Three things O’Toole learned from Sidney Lumet’s making of Network – Why casting should be an Oscar category

It's easy for us on this show to talk at great length about Sidney Lumet's 1976 film "Network" as it's one of our all-time favorites. Both a scathing indictment of the TV industry and a reality check for people's feelings about the times in which they were living, this film made an indelible mark on the world of film and created one of the most iconic movie lines ever. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we not only finish our series of films from 1976 but also begin a short but deliciously sweet series of films written by the amazing Paddy Chayefsky. We talk about the prescience with which Chayefsky seemed to have about the modern state of television and our media-infused culture when he wrote this film in the mid-70s, and what he's really saying with the film. We discuss the brilliant directing by Lumet and how he and his director of photography, Owen Roizman, chose to corrupt the look of the film as it progresses, taking us from a relatively normal world to one that is much more menacing. We go through the amazing cast — Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Peter Finch, Robert Duvall, Ned Beatty, Beatrice Straight, and more — and talk about how pretty much every one of them is given their time to shine in this amazing script. And we look back on 1976's Oscars and pick our own winners if we were the only two people voting. We have a great time talking about this amazing film. If you haven't seen it, go watch it IMMEDIATELY, then come back and tune in!
