STORY 2: Doug Ingram wins Mulberry District 5 runoff Doug Ingram won the Mulberry City Council District 5 runoff election, defeating Michele Y. Sims by 67 votes. He secured 309 votes, or 56%, compared to Sims' 242. The results remain unofficial until certified by Gwinnett County's elections board. As the council works to establish the city's government with weekly meetings, Ingram is expected to join his first meeting on Dec. 10. STORY 3: Seeking a new way of life under the sea - and a world record Rudiger Koch, a 59-year-old aerospace engineer, is living 11 meters underwater off the coast of Panama in a 320-square-foot capsule as part of a four-month-long experiment to set a world record and promote ocean habitation. His home features essentials like a bed, toilet, TV, and internet, though it lacks a shower. Beyond breaking Joseph Dituri's 100-day underwater record, Koch aims to prove the viability of living and expanding human life under the sea. The capsule doubles as an artificial reef, benefiting marine life. Despite challenges like storms, Koch is supported by a team above water and is linked to the "seasteading" movement, advocating for ocean-based communities. Once resurfaced, his first plan is a much-anticipated shower. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. Dr. Joseph Dituri's story of spending 100 days underwater gained worldwide attention back in June when he resurfaced from the Jules' Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, shattering former record attempts. Now we are learning more about the health benefits that came along with that study. The retired Navy diver and Executive Director of the International Board of Undersea Medicine said being underwater for so long was like being in a hyperbaric chamber. He told Matt Austin and Ginger Gadsden on the Florida's Fourth Estate podcast that being nestled about 30 feet under the lagoon for more than three months, reversed the age of his DNA. “I'm 56 now. My extrinsic age was 44. When I got out of the water my extrinsic age was 34. So my telomeres lengthened, I actually got younger when I was under the water,” Dituri said. To better explain how it works, Dituri explained, “On the end of your chromosome, you have these little extensions.... and every time you replicate this, the telomere shrinks, shrinks, shrinks, shrinks, shrinks... let's just say you get one-thousand replications. That's all you get. When the telomeres are gone, you have no more ability to replicate, that's called cell death... so that is truly the world-class definition of aging. But, if you can make that telomere longer you can actually extend life.” He said 9 months later his telomeres are still longer than they otherwise would be. Those aren't the only benefits. Dituri said he also had 17 times the number of stem cells as usual and a reduction in pain which was likely associated with the fact that his inflamatory markers were reduced by 50%. He said these kinds of results are promising but not altogether surprising. He said hyperbaric treatment has been used for hundreds of years and is currently being used to treat people with brain injuries and PTSD because of its ability to help with cognitive issues. However, the treatment is not open to everyone. He said people interested in getting it do need a prescription from a doctor and treatments can start at $250 per hour. You can learn more about the results of Dituri's time underwater for 100 days and the following research that took him into weightlessness on Florida's Fourth Estate. 100 days under the sea with Professor Joseph Dituri
Dr. Joseph Dituri, better known as “Dr. Deep Sea” set a new world record for the longest time…100 days…spent living underwater, without depressurization. Really no really! Jason and Peter decided to find out how he did it, and why? Today's scientists possess more information about outer space than they do about our oceans which cover over 70% of the planet so Dr. Dituri decided to create a challenging project. He's a University of South Florida educator who holds a doctorate in biomedical engineering and he's also a retired U.S. Naval officer with numerous diving and deep-sea awards and accolades to his name. The underwater mission, dubbed Project Neptune 100, was designed to explore how the human body and mind respond to an extended exposure to pressure and confined isolation with the intent of benefitting future ocean researchers and astronauts on long-term missions. IN THIS EPISODE: The positive effects of living underwater - lower cholesterol, less inflammation, less cortisol & stress, deeper sleep, and increased testosterone. The negative effects of living underwater - depression, anxiety, infections, and shrinkage! Hollywood's secret to holding your breath for over 6 minutes! The merits of Aquaman's superpowers debated. Reasons the Titan submersible might have met its tragic fate. Director James Cameron found a partial cure for Alzheimer's at the bottom of the Marianas Sea Trench. Why Jason CAN'T visit Dr Dituri underwater. An amazing whale impersonation. This unparalleled venture seeks to unravel the physiological and psychological effects of prolonged exposure to extreme pressure, pushing the boundaries of human potential while offering insights that could revolutionize our understanding of health and rejuvenation. Dituri's aquatic haven, a compact 100-square-foot habitat nestled 22 feet beneath the ocean's surface at Jules' Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, provided the backdrop for this extraordinary experiment. While navigating the depths, he simultaneously conducted online biomedical engineering classes, a testament to human adaptability and determination. Amidst this immersive journey, the limits of human physiology were tested and redefined. Rigorously monitored by a medical team conducting an array of tests, Dituri's health was meticulously scrutinized. The comprehensive study encompassed psychosocial, psychological, and medical assessments, including blood panels, ultrasounds, electrocardiograms, and stem cell evaluations. Beyond the physical realm, the study delved into the psychological effects of isolation, akin to space travel, offering unprecedented insights into the intricate interplay between mind and environment. Dituri's emergence from the depths was marked by astonishing revelations that challenge conventional paradigms. An analysis of his telomeres, the protective caps at the end of chromosomes, revealed a remarkable 20 percent increase, defying the usual age-related decline. Moreover, his stem cell count experienced an astounding tenfold surge, suggesting a potential avenue for cellular rejuvenation. Tangible health benefits accompanied these transformations, including improved sleep patterns, lowered cholesterol levels, and reduced inflammatory markers. These metamorphic changes, attributed to the pressure-rich underwater environment, mirror the effects of hyperbaric chamber treatments, offering tantalizing prospects for human health. Reference article: 1. https://www.usf.edu/news/2023/usf-researcher-attempts-to-set-world-record-by-living-underwater-for-100-days-hopes-to-emerge-super-human.aspx 2. https://www.irishmirror.ie/news/irish-news/health-news/man-lives-bottom-atlantic-93-30162825

One donned a rainbow tie-dye T-shirt, à la the Grateful Dead. A university professor who spent 100 days living underwater at a Florida Keys lodge for scuba divers resurfaced Friday and raised his face to the sun for the first time since March 1. Dr. Joseph Dituri set a new record for the longest time living underwater without depressurization during his stay at Jules' Undersea Lodge, submerged beneath 30 feet (9.14 meters) of water in a Key Largo lagoon. The world cheered when Joseph Dituri beat the world record for living underwater without depressurization. Now that he's back on dry land he said he lost something when he was down there. “I shrunk about half an inch,” Dituri said. He compared the height he lost to the height astronauts gain when they are in space. “Astronauts are in tension, so they are basically being flung apart and I'm being compressed together,” Dituri said. He told Matt Austin and Ginger Gadsden during a conversation on Florida's Fourth Estate that he noticed something was different while he was still inside the Jules' Undersea Lodge in Key Largo. “Here, I am the tall guy right and I'm constantly scrapping my head on the escape hatch on top, and I was like ‘Hey, I'm not hitting the escape hatch anymore' and I'm like ‘I must have shrunk' and then of course there's no good place to measure yourself. When I get to the surface, I am 72 and a little bit inches. I'm like ‘Maaaan, I was 73!'” The question now is: Will he get that height back? “I don't know. The astronauts do compress back down, so we will see,” he Florida's Fourth Estate will be in touch and have an update if Dituri does in fact regain that height. You can listen to Dituri's full conversation about what it was like to live underwater for 100 days, who he really wants to inspire and what he hopes to achieve next on Florida's Fourth Estate.
