Invested In Climate
Environmental Storytelling with The Redford Center, Ep #108

Invested In Climate

I'm fascinated by the question of how we can improve climate and environmental storytelling. There's research that shows that 45% of young people in the United States experience climate anxiety so bad that it negatively affects their daily functioning. As we learned during a conversation with Nathaniel Stinnett of the Environmental Voter Project last fall, over 5 million Americans list climate and the environment as their #1 top issue, but don't actually vote. To me, these are indicators that we need new kinds of storytelling and new ways to experience the climate transition. To learn about the state of environmental and climate storytelling, I sat down with one of the leading funders of environmental films, Jill Tidman, Executive Director of The Redford Center. Jill brings decades of storytelling experience and understands the challenges of not only getting environmental films distributed but also creating impact through them. We spoke about how the film distribution and funding landscapes have changed, the history of the Redford Center, its impact framework, examples of films and impact campaigns they've supported, and much more. If you're a film fan, just generally curious about the role of documentaries in creating change, or like me, want to understand how we can improve storytelling for climate, there's a lot to learn from this conversation. Enjoy. On today's episode, we cover:[03:37] Importance of storytelling in environmental issues[07:26] History of the Redford Center[10:33] Evolution of filmmaker support[15:23] Approaches to climate storytelling[18:35] Changes in film distribution[21:05] Criteria for selecting film projects[23:20] Redford Center's impact framework[26:29] Example of community engagement film[30:28] Impact and wins of supported projects[34:02] Indigenous voices and conservation efforts[39:13] Future plans for the Redford Center[42:45] Addressing polarization through storytellingResources MentionedThe Redford CenterFighting GoliathNew York Community TrustKiss the GroundThe Acid Rain MovieConnect with Jill TidmanOn LinkedInConnect with Jason RissmanOn LinkedInKeep up with Invested In ClimateSign up for our NewsletterLinkedInInstagram

Through an engaging conversation, we explore how storytelling serves as a bridge between individuals, communities, and the global climate crisis. Tao highlights the importance of amplifying voices from marginalized and vulnerable communities on the frontlines of environmental change. We discuss the power of cultural narratives to inspire action, reframe perspectives, and foster empathy in addressing the climate crisis. Tao emphasizes how the arts, history, and personal storytelling can challenge dominant narratives about climate change, making the issue more accessible and emotionally impactful. The episode also examines the ocean's role in storytelling, its significance to cultural identity, and how its degradation affects communities worldwide. 8.11.24 What Happens Next? Will Climate Change Wipe Out the Indo-Pacific? | 96 Explore the mounting climate challenges facing the Indo-Pacific, Monash University's home and a region at the frontline of the global environmental crisis. Rising sea levels, extreme weather events and record-breaking heat are reshaping the lives of millions, but these issues are more than just numbers and projections—they're personal, cultural and immediate. Host Dr Susan Carland speaks with experts from Monash, including Professor Tony Capon, Dr Gabriel García Ochoa, Dr Lagipoiva Cherelle Jackson, Dr Elissa Waters and Professor Christian Jakob. Together, they discuss why the Indo-Pacific's unique vulnerabilities demand urgent action and how the stories we tell about climate change impact our willingness to act. Dr García Ochoa highlights the power—and dangers—of storytelling, explaining how compelling but simplified narratives can either inspire change or undermine it. Dr Jackson shares the deeply personal cost of climate impacts on Pacific Island communities, whose connection to the land is both cultural and ancestral. Meanwhile, Dr Waters calls for nuanced narratives that recognise the resilience and rights of Pacific Islanders, emphasising that adaptation, not just relocation, is key. As COP29 approaches, this episode calls for global attention on the Indo-Pacific's fight for survival. A full transcript of this episode is available on Monash Lens. The Nest unfolded through a series of audio cassette tapes that guests discovered while wandering through a labyrinth of memorabilia and memories. As former Disney Imagineers, Jarrett and Jeff really showcased their talent in scenic design, crafting a rich narrative through an incredible set that took guests on a dreamlike journey through one woman's memories. They talk about purposeful design choices meant to foster a sense of intimacy and creating spaces that help further the narrative. The Nest takes its guests on an emotionally charged journey through lush scenery, carefully selected props, and purposefully designed spaces. Jarrett and Jeff are truly masters of environmental storytelling, and it was a pleasure to have them on the podcast.   Show Notes   The Mailbag: Please give us some feedback?   We're doing a Mailbag episode where we answer your questions, share your stories, and learn from you fine folks. Über ludonarrative Dissonanz, Environmental Storytelling und allgemein Erzählung im Spiel sprechen wir mit Käsekuchenliebhaber und "Medien und Gesellschaft"-Student Fabian Bhatti. Menschen lieben Geschichten. Jimmy uses an environmental storytelling technique to add depth to his Dungeons and Dragons campaign. They circle around a sort of definition of what environmental storytelling is and end up with a pretty solid understanding of it (we think). This week we have Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle as our main focus. This is a deep game and as such we have a lot to talk about. We were surprised at the quality of this game for having such a short time between announcement and launch but it's very good. We also talk about the latest DLC from Little Nightmares. In our news, we have the free games for Xbox One and Playstation 4 for September. There are some good ones including Oxenfree and Infamous Second Son. We also discuss the Nintendo Switch Nindie lineup, 343 Industries working on VR/AR tech, Destiny 2 and more. In our discussion, we break down environmental storytelling and how powerful it is for a game. We use examples from games like What Remains of Edith Finch, Bloodbourne and even Overwatch to delve into how game developers tell a story in a unique way via narrative, investigative and atmospheric.
