Austin area COVID-related hospitalizations continued dropping throughout the weekend and are now halfway thru Stage 3 range at 19.9, less than 5 points from Stage 2 - that new county map from the CDC shows Travis and Williamson Counties under low COVID risk, but Hays County under high risk. Today is election day in the mid-term primary. Only about ten percent of registered voters in Travis County voted early, which doesn't bode well for turnout today. A slew of statewide offices and all of our U.S. House seats are in play - polls will be open today from 7am to 7pm and remember, the margin to win outright is 50% plus one vote - any candidate falling short of that will face their runner-up in a runoff election in late May - Governor Greg Abbott would like to avoid a runoff with any of his challengers and seems on track to do so. Today is also Fat Tuesday - Cajun joints throughout town including Evangeline Cafe, Shoal Creek Saloon, Cypress Grill, and many more expect big business tonight. Austin ISD officials will hold a special meeting tomorrow to discuss future plans for district masking policies. The Texas men's basketball team played their last game ever on the court of the Frank Erwin Center last night, a 68-61 loss to Baylor. Women's hoops will close out at Frank Erwin on Saturday vs Oklahoma State, and the Harlem Globetrotters will close that court out officially on April 2. There's also Monster Jam monster truck event scheduled at the Frank Erwin Center on March 12 - the building is set to be demolished sometime in April. High school football phenom and Louisiana legacy QB Arch Manning is set to meet again with Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian later this month - could he be on his way to Austin?Austin based Juiceland is set to resume its expansion plans after holding back during the pandemic with openings coming in the suburbs of San Antonio and Dallas. The Chicks announce a U.S. tour - with a conspicuous lack of Texas dates. The Alamo has been named one of the ten most beautiful monuments in the U.S. - remember to take a drive down to visit if you haven't lately. Congrats to the members of the Williamson County Go Texan BBQ team, who won the 2022 World Championship BBQ competition at the Houston Rodeo on Saturday, dominating a field of 250 teams. Keep an eye out for American Idol episodes airing on Sundays this month on Fox for glimpses of home - the show shot auditions at Lakeway Resort's Vista Ballroom last fall. And, don't forget Amplify Austin Day for this year - it starts at 6pm tomorrow night and runs through the same time Wednesday.

COVID Key Indicators edge back within a point of Stage 3 - no official reduction to Stage 2 is likely soon - while current COVID hospitalizations across the state drop below 1,000, and a new map shows vaccination rates by ZIP code. Matthew McConaughey draws criticism for casting doubt upon vaccines for younger kids. Another interactive map shows how the various Austin precincts supported or rejected Prop A. Jose "Chito" Vela III announces a run for the soon-to-be-vacant District 4 seat currently held by Greg Casar. New conspiracy charges are filed in the Javier Ambler III police-involved death case. Austin may be facing a waste collection service interruption due to a lack of drivers. The operator of 19 local Dairy Queen stores has been forced to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in back wages owed to 31 of its managers. Texas Longhorns basketball kicks off impressively for both men's and women's teams in their last-ever season openers at the Frank Erwin Center. Juiceland marks 10 years with a new CEO and a menu expansion. Distant Relatives BBQ is named one of Eater.com's 11 Best New Restaurants in America. And organizers of the cancelled Veteran's Day Parade decline an offer to gather at the Capitol, while organizers of the 37th Street Christmas Lights announce an opening night of December 10.

COVID numbers continue a welcome decline. Austin Police Department: two officers are suspended for failing to stop another officer from committing a use-of-force violation - an APD first - while the Department will begin regular COVID testing of uniformed officers today. YETI sues Igloo over patent and trademark infringements, while Juiceland recovers from an employee strike. The Fairmont Austin is named the best hotel in the state of Texas. Willie Nelson's daughters Paula and Amy lend a hand for the dogs of the recently late local live music magnate Tim O'Connor. And it's gonna be a hot ACL weekend, ahead of a cooldown next week.

It all started with a LinkedIn post that drove a ton of traffic (including from me), Angela Shaw, HR executive and DEI advocate, was fielding tons of questions and connections from others feeling the same. Angela was gracious enough to join our show while in transition, prior to landing at JuiceLand as their Chief People Officer. In this episode, we talk about the joys and challenges of resiliency at middle (ahem) age, the joys of understanding yourself and giving yourself space to just be ok taking a full-on nap in the middle of the day! We start with a study from Harvard and MIT about resiliency at middle age, followed by the article, " "Resilience, mindfulness and flourishing in middle aged adults." But ultimately, we just have a great conversation about self-care, self-compassion, and giving yourself permission to being true to who you are. I also made a quick-start guide with 5 ways to be resilient at any age, which is on our website. Check it out!

During the first 7 years of our lives our brains are in a theta state and we download rules and beliefs that last an entire lifetime. Ideas about money, religion, political ideology and much more.  Neuroscientists say 95% of our decisions come from our subconscious mind and most people never question or are aware of those programs. Today I talk about ways to change the subconscious mind and creating heaven on earth.  I also review a  coffee smoothie known as 'The Percolator' from Juiceland. https://www.juiceland.com/ I never thought I'd be the guy that drops $11 on a smoothie, but here I am. I blame the Netflix documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. After seeing that movie I was hooked on smoothies. It documents Jim Cross and his 60 juice fast. By the end his blood pressure and LDL cholesterol dropped considerably. He was also able to stop taking medications he had for an autoimmune disease. The food we eat is not just calories but it's information that tells our bodies which DNA triggers to play. I know on a personal level I feel better mentally and physically when I have my daily smoothie. Lately it's been spinach, banana and peaches. I love experimenting with the combinations. I’m often asked how do I stay motivated. Like it’s this magic secret, trick, or pill. Umm—-nooo. I like to think of lack of motivation as The Unmotivated Mountain...and guess whose battle it is to get up the mountain??? YOURS, duh. A coach can’t make you do anything—they can simply keep you accountable and lead you through YOUR goals. So here’s a tip: When you’re feeling unmotivated—ya gotta put incentive at the top of The Unmotivated Mountain. A smoothie was at the end of my climb today. So about The Unmotivated Mountain.... It’s that feeling when you don’t wanna, but ya gotta. It’s a bee to climb and it’s difficult ascend does NOT discriminate...these past two days—GIRRRL. There are days when you WON’T feel like working out. I remember coming home from 12h shifts and being comatose, but working out anyway. There will be days when you WON’T want to go to work. In nursing, I’d drive to work w/ anxiety riding high, but I knew I was still EXPECTED. Being your own boss part time or full time is HARD. There’s nobody to write you up for being a no show. Ya gotta go to battle with yourself. Ya gotta figure out what it’s going to take to push you through. Some days its vision. Some days it’s purpose. Some days it’s strategically placing Juiceland at the end of a 5K. Whatever it is—you decide to climb The Unmotivated Mountain and know you’ll be better for it.

JT Kelley (@eatingbootytakingnames) is a comedian who grew up in fundamentalist Christian schooling. This was an intriguing podcast! I first met my friend JT while working at Juiceland in Austin. My original intention of our dialogue was to chat about comedy. Instead, JT discusses what it was like to have grown up in fundamentalist Christian schooling and how that's affected him. I could have dove much deeper into some of the heated topics brought up in this conversation like socialism, communism, and fundamentalist Christianity, but chose instead to keep things light and friendly. I was previously ignorant that such schooling programs like Abeka Books and Bob Jones University existed and I'm curious to learn more about them. I'm ignorant on the subject, but it sounds strange to me that there are educational programs in the United States that aren't encouraging kids to think for themselves, are incentivizing them to protest complex issues, and perhaps even supporting leveraging them toward some sort of political/religious/financial agenda. If you know more about any of this, I’d love to hear from you. All that being said, JT is one of the funniest comedians I’ve ever seen perform (not an understatement) and the conversation was kept pleasant. So, without further adieu, please welcome to the podcast my hilarious friend, Mr. JT Kelley! Love, David *PS - Although much of the discussion revolves around comedy and JT’s Christian upbringing, I wanted to include one quick fact check about incarceration rates: JT briefly mentioned that 20% of the total US population is incarcerated. The research I found states otherwise, that about 2.3M people in the US are incarcerated as of 2018, which is an incarceration rate of less than 1%. That being said, he could have been referring to the US prison population as a percent of the world’s prison population (~20%). *https://www.prisonpolicy.org/reports/pie2018.html Show Notes: Follow JT on Instagram, and Twitter Here’s a hilarious JT stand-up video! Our guest today is Matt Shook, Matt is the owner of Juice Land here in Austin, TX and on the show we'll talk about the benefits of juicing fresh vegetables and fruits. When you juice vegetables and fruits you access digestive enzymes that are normally locked away in the fiber. Most commercial juices are processed and lacking in nutrition, while freshly juiced veggies and fruits are loaded with vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. We'll also explore other adaptogens and extracts that work really well with raw juices.   Herbs and superfoods that boost stamina, energy and / or recovery:   Raw beets or beet juice - boosts nitric oxide levels and supports heart health. Pineapple - has the enzyme bromelain, an enzyme known to support inflammation response.  Spirulina -  energizing blue green algae known as great source of minerals, carotenoids, vitamins, and all sorts of other micronutrients.  Turmeric - supports inflammation response. You can enhance the absorption of turmeric when you add black pepper or black pepper extract. CBD - supports inflammation response Maca - Peruvian superfood/adaptogen that boost energy, stamina, and recovery from strenuous exercise.
