In this episode Lara Price and I discuss the hosting jams, why jams make you a better musician and why they help you get gigs. We also talk about how acoustic performances are great for otherwise electric only bands and artists, how music education helped her develop a common language among musicians, and what it means to work with the right label. Lara also shares networking advice for the shy musicians among us and a few great marketing tips and reminders. This is the third installment of my new Rewind episodes, in which I revisit past conversations for a deeper dive into the tips, hacks and insights they offered. I hope you're enjoying them, because they've proven to be a lot of work. But they've been very fun too. I'll likely rotate some new interviews back into the show very soon. I'm starting to miss them. :) Lara and I met around 2001 at a blues jam she was running at JJ's Blues (now known as JJ's Lounge) in San Jose, California. She says there was a lot of learning going on at that moment in time. Lara was using the jam to get her own band ready to do shows and she wholeheartedly believes jam sessions make us better musicians. This is such a Timely topic for me, having recently moved to a new city in a new country and finding myself starting over. Lara made some very helpful points about jams and networking. She also offers advice for running a jam and for attending jams, adding that running one can be difficult if you're not organized. I was reminded that setting jammers up to win, while entertaining the regulars is super important. Lara points out that jams can be extremely helpful in getting gigs. When you're around your own tribe, as you are at a jam, you can share your challenges, seek advice and get support. "It's really all about the networking," says Lara. Most of the musicians Lara works with to this day are lifelong friends she met at jams. I asked Lara about her then new album I Mean Business, a project that began in peril, but ultimately delivered big wins and a memorable experience. Lara took advantage of what looked like a bad situation and sought out a producer in Kid Andersen of Greaseland Studio. Guess where they met? At a jam. Kid was the first producer she'd ever had and things couldn't have gone better. I also asked Lara why she thought that some musicians don't venture into the world of acoustic performance. We continue with Lara's reflection on her music education, her thoughts on working with labels, embracing accolades and the networking opportunities that come with them. Our discussion concludes with Lara's tips on marketing and this memorable quote. "Don't let people say that you can't do something... I mean, I'm a Vietnamese person singing blues." –Lara Price. For the last 18 years, Netto Rockefeller's been working with his own band, running the Blue Crawfish record label, and touring with US and European musicians in Brasil such as Willie Buck, Tail Dragger, Lazy Lester, Johnny Nicholas, Quique Gomez, Wallace Coleman, and Steve Guyger, just to name a few. His ninth CD, The Latin American Mojo Style of Netto Rockfeller, was his first one to be recorded in the US (at Kid Andersen's famed studio Greaseland in San Jose CA), and features John Blues Boyd, Whitney Shay, Kid Andersen, Jim Pugh and June Core. As the title indicates, it's an upbeat CD with both Latin American and straight ahead American blues sensibilities, featuring songs sung in Portuguese and a cover of a Los Pakines hit (Peru's answer to The Shadows). Stephanie Tice and I have mutual ties to Greaseland Studios in San Jose. We share an interest in some of the artists that have recorded there. In Stephanie's case, however, it's more. She has fallen head over heels for the blues. Finding Little Lou's , Poor House Bistro & Greaseland Following a big life change, Stephanie found happiness at San Jose blues venues Little Lou's and Poor House Bistro. The blues saved Stephanie when she needed saving. It was during this time that she met Norwegian born Kid Andersen of Greaseland Studios. Stephanie happens to speak Norwegian, so she and Kid hit it off. Stephanie soon thereafter went to Greaseland where she discovered that a number of special recordings had been done. Howlin' at Greaseland Fast forward and she becomes the executive producer for Howlin' at Greaseland. At the time of this interview, Howlin' at Greaseland had been nominated for Traditional Blues Album of the year. The album is a tribute to Howlin' Wolf and it features 25 artists including Henry Gray, Taildragger, Terry Hanck, John Blues Boyd. Aki Kumar, Chris James, Patrick Rin, and Kid Andersen among others. A couple of the featured artists actually toured with Howlin' Wolf and share story snippets about their friendships with him. Blues culture and being a producer Stephanie is extremely fascinated in the development of blues culture around the world and the many language barriers it's broken. She hosts Basking in the Blues, which is a radio program featured on KKCR in Kauai. She does this as DJ Ginger Moonstone. We discuss details of being a producer, her work with Rockin' Johnny Burgin, projects she's dreaming up with producer/sound engineer Ron Nevison, who has worked Jefferson Starship, KISS, The Who, Bad Company and many more. We also talk about a podcast she's making plans to start. A podcast she says will cover world blues news. “All blues are lusty lyrical realism charged with taut sensibility.” – –Richard Wright, Writer Stephanie shared a quote with me that she found during her research of blues music culture. The quote is, “All blues are lusty lyrical realism charged with taught sensibility.” Stephanie sees the blues as filled with despair and humiliation, but also with hope. On May 9th of 2017 I walked into Greaseland Studios to interview producer Kid Andersen. I was immediately blown away the abundance of musical gear everywhere. The next thing thing that came into my focus was the kitchen. Greaseland is also the home of Kid and Lisa Leuschner Anderson. There in the kitchen was a grand piano. Rather than thinking how rather odd it was to see a grand piano in a kitchen, my focus next shifted to the fact that there was a vocal lesson in progress. I'm not sure who the student was that day, but there at the grand piano was Lisa Leuschner Andersen. At the outset of my plans to interview Lisa, I thought we'd spend most of our time talking about her vocal coaching business. It turned out that there was much more to discuss. Lisa is the Queen of Greaseland, a vocal instructor, singer with Foreverland (San Francisco based tribute to the music of Michael Jackson), Alumni of American Idol seasons 2 and 3, and Showtime at The Apollo alumni. She's also a dancer, Bitstrips enthusiast & artiste, and a really enjoyable storyteller. Gigging professionally since age 7 Lisa comes from a musical family and has been gigging professionally since age 7. She's a major voice at Greaseland, having contributed vocals on just about every album ever recorded there. She also tells me that she hears every sound made at Greaseland Studios (from anywhere in the house), so I think it's safe to say that she's also the ear of Greaseland. I don't recall exactly when I initially decided she'd be a great contributor to this podcast, but her name came up during my recent interview with Rockin' Johnny Burgin. Lisa is Burgin's vocal coach. "Everyone that knows me knows I'm a huge fan of Michael Jackson" On how she got the gig with Foreverland, Lisa told me that it was the first time she had ever auditioned for a gig. Up until then, she got gigs based on her reputation. She also tells the Foreverland story as if she "begged" for the gig. Lisa was determined, but begging is merely how she refers to the act of asking for the audition. Lisa credits American Idol for the fact that she's a full time musician, but not for the reasons you might think. While rehearsing for her first season with AI, she quickly realized that she didn't have time for her then day job at a hotel. She very soon after quit that job and never looked back. Today she sings in a number of live performance situations, does regular studio work Greaseland, and has a book of business as a vocal coach. One of my personal favorite things that Lisa does is something called Bedtime Jamz (#bedtimejamz on Facebook). Bedtime jamz are late night performances recorded on Facebook Live from Greaseland Studios. Kid is typically featured in these performances, along with whomever happens to be at Greaseland. These rather sporadic and impromptu performances are typically done with everyone sporting PJs. I'm hoping they'll make it a regular thing–it's truly entertaining. On making the jump to career musician, Lisa says that going full time is wrought with peril. The peril she refers to are the various traps that can lead an artist into doing things she doesn't enjoy or otherwise regrets. She adds that there's absolutely no shame in keeping a day-job to supplement one's music income. Lisa has had personal dealings with the peril of going full time, but today comes across as fulfilled, happy and content. I heard this in her voice and her laughter. You can learn more about and contact Lisa via her About Me page. Rockin' Johnny Burgin is incredibly passionate a about performing, and holds the stage in the highest regard. Johnny resides in the San Francisco Bay area, but came up as a blues player learning and performing in the west side Chicago blues scene. In his early twenties, he was performing at west side black clubs where he says watching bands was like watching a boxing match, a place where musical phrasing came to life. Why move from Chicago to California? Apparently Johnny had toured in California several times, and those tours kept getting better and better. He recalls that the move was an opportunity to expand his market. Knowing what I know about the San Francisco Bay area blues scene, I imagine he was also welcomed with the openest of arms. When we booked Johnny's interview, he expressed interest in talking about his new album Neoprene Fedora. We do in fact talk about the album, and feature the track Guitar King at the end of our conversation. It is such a great tune! We also discuss Johnny's beginnings in blues, his many memorable collaborations, Aki Kumar, Kid Andersen, touring around the world, and how much he appreciates his time with a father who introduced him to the arts. His appreciation for the arts seems to fuel Johnny's passion for the blues and performing. Johnny says he's living on the edge when he's on stage. He sees the stage as a place of endless possibilities. It's also a place where his spontaneity thrives. Read more at UnstarvingMusician.com

Aki Kumar fell in love with the blues and blues harmonica, but Bollywood pop is part of his music memory. This memory is creating what's likely to become a bonafide genre–Bollywood Blues. You can hear this on his latest album Aki Goes to Bollywood. Although Aki is of Indian decent, his bold move to mix the blues and Bollywood pop from his childhood started with his love of the Chicago blues sound. Although the final tracks of his first album Don't Hold Back were perhaps a foreshadowing of things to come. In the early days of his love affair with the blues, Aki focused on learning to play harp and performing blues classics. His rapid rise to success is a testament to his talent as a performer, but may also be attributed some of his success to the people he's surrounded himself with, including the likes of David Barrett, Kid Andersen and Jim Pugh. Even so, Aki is a fantastic performer/entertainer with a flair for style. He's also a consummate professional who looks after the small details as much as he does the bigger picture. When I asked him about business and where he's currently focusing his energy, he said without hesitation– live performances. Rockin Johnny cut his teeth on the Chicago scene with the likes of Jewtown Burkes and the Taildragger. Since then he’s released 7 critically acclaimed albums, most on famed Delmark Records. Johnny led one of the most requested house bands in Chicago working with Billy Boy Arnold, Jimmie Lee Robinson, Willie Buck, Paul De Lay and many more, before relocating to California. He just released his second studio effort as a Californian, both recorded at the renowned Greaseland. His latest is Neoprene Fedora, a theme which represents his assimilation into West coast culture. The album features Kid Andersen, Aki Kumar and Alabama Mike among others and features a smashing version of Johnny Littlejohn’s ABC hit, Guitar King.
